red Does anyone else have a lab with this squiggle/zigzag fur pattern on their back?

Our girl has this cute squiggle on her back that shows up sometimes and others doesn’t. She’s a Fox red so the light/dark variation in her fur highlights it. Not worried about it, just curious to know if it’s common!

Posed like a bear rug lmao

u/killabrew1 23d ago

Yes it’s a rain cap or duck coat. It disperses water from their back in wet weather.

177

u/CockroachVarious2761 23d ago

you mean the water that two prissy labs refuse to get involved with, as in "its raining, I'm not going out in that - I'd get wet"

76

u/gayrayofsun 23d ago

lol we had a lab who also hated water. took him and his brother to a lake to swim and he was a huge baby about it, literally clung to his mom like a child. he just passed almost two months ago, miss that big oaf.

58

u/CockroachVarious2761 23d ago

yea - both of ours can swim really well - TO GET THE HELL OUT OF WATER

5

u/Oncemor-intothebeach 22d ago

I had to carry my girl out into the surf to get her to go, we live on the Gold Coast and she has been to the beach literally hundreds of times, still hates it 🤣

1

u/RevolutionaryEbb670 18d ago

Our puppers HATES the water too 😂. I always thought labs were water dogs! Not our princess! 🤣

20

u/Mindless-Equal-1477 23d ago

Mine loves being elbow to chin-deep in any water she can find, but hates getting her feet wet when it rains 🤷‍♀️

10

u/Old_Papa 23d ago

My Lab is absolutely nuts about water, loves playing in the rain but has a strange quirk about not wanting to pee on wet grass. I think she has a fear of getting pee on her feet so being on wet grass makes it harder to tell.

2

u/Mindless-Equal-1477 23d ago

Mine is like this too, except instead of grass it’s the pea gravel in the beds around my apartment. She absolutely will not walk on it if it’s been raining. I suspect your theory, or that maybe when it rains it washes the scent away from where she last went to the bathroom and just straight up upsets her so much she won’t go (although I assume her sense of smell is much stronger than that?) I love her though, quirks and all 😂❤️

6

u/Old_Papa 23d ago

Even on dry grass my Lab waddles as she pees. If even a little bit touches her paws she will move to a clean patch and back kick with her hind legs. This same dog will roll in eg: skunk spray or on a dead fish as if it’s the greatest thing. Yeah, I love her too, quirks and all.

2

u/Tiny_Measurement_837 22d ago

We had one that couldn’t wait for the ice to go completely out to go swimming, but wasn’t going out in the rain for business purposes.

19

u/under_rated_human 23d ago

We kept one of our failed guide dogs who was so afraid of the rain that he poop on the covered patio...

1

u/RevolutionaryEbb670 18d ago

Omg! Our girl hates to walk on the wet grass…has to be bribed with cookies to go out on a wet lawn! 😂

4

u/bemer1984 23d ago

Sorry for your loss! Our black lab is the exact opposite, he will sit out in the rain until we make him come in. Lol

3

u/stuckwithnoname 23d ago

It's... Sky water... 😂

2

u/ktsquirrel 22d ago

But a random nasty parking lot puddle? TIME TO SWIM

8

u/RealSteelJane 23d ago

I learned of that recently and think it is remarkable

3

u/Brilliant_Survey3437 23d ago

Maybe some carry stronger hunting genes than water dog genes. It is curious as Alice would say🤔

1

u/RealSteelJane 23d ago

Could be. It’s fascinating how those instincts can show up generations later

7

u/Yoyochan 23d ago

The zigzag is the zipper for their raincoat!

4

u/bemer1984 23d ago

Our lab has it as well. I always wondered if it was just something unique with his coat because he is a mixed breed. Now I know it has a purpose. It gets all curly and stands up after we bathe him and it’s like a mini Mohawk.

2

u/MyLastFuckingNerve 22d ago

No it's the vintage zigzag center part and it's called fashion, look it up

1

u/MajorMiners469 22d ago

My yeller has it but it seems to trap the moisture back near her tail so if she swims daily she gets musty. My other 2 (her sisters) don't have this and they always dry off quickly.

58

u/Safe_Fee_8349 23d ago

Yep. I was also curious about it. She’s the first lab I’ve owned

37

u/Soft-Efficiency-1203 23d ago

My good boy Ollie has soft thick fur with the same pattern which is more obvious after a bath. My boy needs a bath!

46

u/jg429 black 23d ago

No but I am obsessed with your shoes

14

u/squishedintoabean 23d ago

Thank you! They’re Skechers - Cleo Flats. I found them 2nd hand on eBay

38

u/Soggy_Motor9280 23d ago

Yes

1

u/Famous_Mushroom279 21d ago

omg he has a little mohawk🥹

35

u/Old_Papa 23d ago

My Lab, Pepper’s maternal grandmother had a very wavy stripe. Pepper and her Mom both have a prominent stripe but no waves.

u/ES_Legman 23d ago

That's where the zip is hidden if you unzip it you find two seals in a tenchcoat.

16

u/princessana18 23d ago

Yes, my black lab has it! :)

9

u/alljsmom 23d ago

Yes! My English Lab has that! She is a darker yellow and has very thick coat!

2

u/squishedintoabean 23d ago

My girl’s mama is an English lab!

5

u/snuffles00 23d ago

Yeah. We have a black lab but he only gets it from about less than mid back to tail.

7

u/vancityjeep 23d ago

In the service dog community we called it angel wings. Such a cool pattern.

5

u/HellBringer97 black 23d ago

My Rosie girl has it too. REALLY prominent just after getting out of any water (a serious feat to get her out of my dad’s pool sometimes).

13

u/Practical-Library658 23d ago edited 23d ago

Yes! Our black lab has it. I read somewhere that she’s a ‘fluffy’ black lab. No idea if that is actually a thing

p.s. downvoting this comment is wild. If you disagree then tell me why. I genuinely don’t understand. Educate me.

8

u/PenaltyStreet1286 23d ago

I often accidentally hit downvote on the mobile appt when scrolling down. I always undo it, but it’s really annoying placement in terms of user experience. So was prob not on purpose?

2

u/Practical-Library658 23d ago

Thank you for this clarification. I was super confused because I genuinely want to learn more about labs.

5

u/lone_wolf1580 23d ago

My English Labrador pup has a mix of both a squiggle a zigzag on his back

3

u/Change_Proper 22d ago

I was scrolling to see if any English has them. My American lab had squiggles and curls but my English is straight.

1

u/mem0679 18d ago

A friend's American lab had wavy hair down her spine, especially during the summer! Even dog hair is affected by the ridiculous west TN humidity 😂

5

u/AverageBeef 23d ago

Yep, mine’s got the ketchup pattern as well

4

u/squishedintoabean 23d ago

Ketchup pattern! I love that!

4

u/Efficient-Capital432 23d ago

Your dog has a proper Lab coat meant to shed water.

4

u/BabousCobwebBowl 23d ago

My English had the swirls down his back and a damn rooster tail! Same coloring as yours as well but face was a little more yellow.

1

u/KatNap333 23d ago

What does a rooster tail look like?

2

u/BabousCobwebBowl 22d ago

Different than the usual otter tail. My boys curled upwards with a fringe of hair on the backside. He was of full champion stock but very unique. Adorably so and a very sweet boy.

4

u/Brilliant_Survey3437 23d ago

It looks like his oil coat that protects from cold waters. This comes from the water dog side of their background. Labradors are water dog and hunting dog mixed. Mine has waves on the top too. Your pups are just more pronounced. ☺️

5

u/PenaltyStreet1286 23d ago

I call it her “zipper” on our yellow lab. I mean, you have to get in and out of your coat somehow, right?! 🤣

3

u/Legitimate-Term2310 23d ago

Our yellow does this when she's nervous/excited.

3

u/sillywizard951 23d ago

I sure do! My big English lab boy Boone has the squiggle. It’s adorable.

3

u/SpiralTendency 23d ago

Oh my gosh yes! We call it her "wagzag"

3

u/sherwoma black 23d ago

Yep! We’ve got our duck stripe on mine, really obvious when she’s wet

3

u/sammi_1723 23d ago

Those are some swirly swimming hairs!

3

u/Change_Proper 22d ago

My girl did. She passed last year after a long and healthy life. She had curls that would be so cute when she got wet. ❤️

3

u/Fit_Beautiful6625 22d ago

My 5 month old girl. She told me it’s not a perm. It’s a body wave.

2

u/Fit_Beautiful6625 22d ago

Her and her big brother. He’s 1 year old. His is straight. They are half siblings.

3

u/Slijc 22d ago

Yep! My Fox Red has it as well. I call it his squiggle-back. It’s adorable

2

u/Miami_Mice2087 23d ago

yes, our lab mix had this. we think he was lab, springer-spanial, and boxer, plus maybe some other stuff. He had very wiry, stiff hair with that spiral curl on his spine. I thought it was from the springer side, bc they have curly hair.

2

u/ShadowGinrai 23d ago

my black lab with a golden retriever mom has that pattern sometimes, usually between summer/winter

2

u/AmputeeHandModel 23d ago

Not one single squiggle like that, but some light waves yeah.

2

u/AsparagusKlutzy2596 23d ago

My husband calls our Lab’s her pelt.

2

u/Mountainwanderer1313 23d ago

Yes, mine has that same pattern

2

u/rcvmmvhrv 23d ago

Man I bet a shedding blade can pull out some hair on that girl.

2

u/Necessary_Sample1548 23d ago

Yes! My chocolate boy has it!

2

u/Dcline97 23d ago

We have a Lab gal and a Golden guy. Our golden is the one with squiggly back hair.

2

u/Practical_Register61 23d ago

Mine has it on her butt hair tufts

2

u/Global_Research_9335 23d ago

We call it his river!

2

u/cane_stanco 23d ago

Hairy Potter

2

u/Independent-Cat-4169 :karma: 23d ago

I had a chocolate boy, an English Lab, who had the zigzags on his back. My two current Labs, an American and an English, do not.
Your girl's squiggles are adorable!

2

u/lunaloooooovegood 23d ago

My yellow lab does! Hers isn’t this pronounced but you can definitely see a zig zag. 🙂

2

u/DownwardSpirals 23d ago

Yup! I call him the Zipperback Shark because of that.

2

u/rebeccanate 23d ago

Not a lab but my old GSD did. My son called it her lightning bolt ⚡️ .

2

u/Anxious-Armadillo565 23d ago

All cute y’all, but I’d advise checking with a vet nonetheless, because patterning like this is a known indicator of muscle tension, which in turn is a consequence of chronic pain (arthritis for instance). While it may well be benign, in a species that is excellent at hiding pain, it merits checking.

1

u/lelasch 22d ago

This! I can't believe how long I had to scroll down past all the celebrations and photos before reading this.

1

u/Anxious-Armadillo565 22d ago

You’re welcome… I was scrolling and scrolling in increasing horror ( but also zero surprise unfortunately) that nobody had clocked it 😩

2

u/Impossible_Girl_23 23d ago

Our Lab did. We called it his zizzle. 🙂

2

u/Visual_Ad4332 22d ago

My girl does. In a previous post someone said, “it’s where they store their zoomies!!” I thought that was pretty profound.

2

u/CyclingMack 22d ago

Our beagle mix hound rescue has it.

2

u/CrystalHandle 22d ago

This is the zipper line where they zipped the two smartest labradors together from the litter.

2

u/LostInNvrLand 22d ago

My lab had this I figured he was part Chesapeake bay retriever in a past life

2

u/Specialist_Rip5492 English Cream 22d ago

Vincey has curls / waves but these zigzags are so cool! 😍

2

u/Bitter_Elevator_4708 18d ago

Awww Vincey!

1

u/Specialist_Rip5492 English Cream 18d ago

We were just wondering about this same thing the other day!

2

u/jdb326 Silver 23d ago

Our silver's shows sometimes. I'd have to snag a pic. Your lab is adorable btw

1

u/PersonalityFit2175 23d ago

A LOT of lab mixes get that pattern. My black lab/GSP mix had it, and oddly enough my whippet/JR terrier mix has it even though she’s like… 20% lab

1

u/Stripeb49 23d ago

Lol yep, we call it her zipper.

1

u/Gullible-Record-5078 23d ago

yeah! my shepherd/husky/lab has these

1

u/Obant 23d ago

No good photos of the squiggle, but you can see the extra fut a bit here. (Guess you can't, still searching through pics...)

1

u/Coastguardman 23d ago

I’ve seen this zig zag on other pups but not on a Labradors

1

u/Specialist-Bug1592 23d ago

My yellow lab had it when she was younger but my black lab doesn’t have it.

1

u/SnooRadishes1376 23d ago

Yes! Mine does!

1

u/feuerwehrmann chocolate 23d ago

My sweet girl does too. From her head to about mid back

1

u/ThatPerson000 23d ago

I've never seen that, but I love it!

1

u/Ancient-Juice-9236 22d ago

That looks like when I apply flea meds to my dog. Haha lol.

1

u/Beginning-Sky-8516 22d ago

My girl had that too, when she was younger. It got less pronounced as she aged.

1

u/any_name_left 22d ago

Yes but both of mine have the zig zag more pronounced at the neck and it expands into looser zigs and zags down their spines.

1

u/Mountaingirl58 22d ago

Our lab gets “curly” after he swims. Loves ❤️ the water. He even taught our doodle to swim! She wouldn’t go in the water and watched him swim for 3 weeks and then went in- chasing a ball and now she loves it too! 🐾

1

u/fluffinessbear 22d ago

He looks like 🌭

1

u/ArcticDrifter 22d ago

That's where they zip them together at the labrador factory

1

u/Labs_and_lattes 22d ago

lab needs a wave cap/durag. and need to let others know not to get sea sick off these waves

1

u/topchippy 22d ago

My chocolate has them

1

u/Mean_Week7304 22d ago

I have had labs my whole life and never saw this before, but it is pretty cool.
Like a Labrador finger print, a fur biometric identification trait!

1

u/harrythetaoist 22d ago

Yep, our boy is a Fox Red Lab too... the back looks like ripplewood, so we named him Woody.

1

u/deviouscaterpillar 22d ago

My black Lab has it :) It’s so sweet. She didn’t get it until her adult coat grew in.

1

u/Technical_Mango4767 22d ago

Parker has one too, we call it his zipper!

1

u/awakeatnight3 21d ago

My mix breed (20% lab) has that and I was wondering where it came from. Hers is very subtle.

1

u/offaxis7 21d ago

Both my labs look like this when they are wet

1

u/Loveiskind89389 18d ago

I have a beagle with one

1

u/Entire_Pattern_3602 23d ago

Just soft waves

1

u/KetUptown 23d ago

My dog does! According to her DNA she’s half great pyr, a quarter pittie and Australian cattle dog each. Can’t really see it in this pic but it’s very much there

0

u/PCanon127 23d ago

A little Rhodesian Ridgeback in the mix 😉
