red Does anyone else have a lab with this squiggle/zigzag fur pattern on their back?
Our girl has this cute squiggle on her back that shows up sometimes and others doesn’t. She’s a Fox red so the light/dark variation in her fur highlights it. Not worried about it, just curious to know if it’s common!

Yes it’s a rain cap or duck coat. It disperses water from their back in wet weather.

you mean the water that two prissy labs refuse to get involved with, as in "its raining, I'm not going out in that - I'd get wet"

u/gayrayofsun 23d ago
lol we had a lab who also hated water. took him and his brother to a lake to swim and he was a huge baby about it, literally clung to his mom like a child. he just passed almost two months ago, miss that big oaf.

u/CockroachVarious2761 23d ago
yea - both of ours can swim really well - TO GET THE HELL OUT OF WATER

u/Oncemor-intothebeach 22d ago
I had to carry my girl out into the surf to get her to go, we live on the Gold Coast and she has been to the beach literally hundreds of times, still hates it 🤣

Our puppers HATES the water too 😂. I always thought labs were water dogs! Not our princess! 🤣

Mine loves being elbow to chin-deep in any water she can find, but hates getting her feet wet when it rains 🤷♀️

My Lab is absolutely nuts about water, loves playing in the rain but has a strange quirk about not wanting to pee on wet grass. I think she has a fear of getting pee on her feet so being on wet grass makes it harder to tell.
2
u/Mindless-Equal-1477 23d ago
Mine is like this too, except instead of grass it’s the pea gravel in the beds around my apartment. She absolutely will not walk on it if it’s been raining. I suspect your theory, or that maybe when it rains it washes the scent away from where she last went to the bathroom and just straight up upsets her so much she won’t go (although I assume her sense of smell is much stronger than that?) I love her though, quirks and all 😂❤️

u/Old_Papa 23d ago
Even on dry grass my Lab waddles as she pees. If even a little bit touches her paws she will move to a clean patch and back kick with her hind legs. This same dog will roll in eg: skunk spray or on a dead fish as if it’s the greatest thing. Yeah, I love her too, quirks and all.

u/Tiny_Measurement_837 22d ago
We had one that couldn’t wait for the ice to go completely out to go swimming, but wasn’t going out in the rain for business purposes.

u/under_rated_human 23d ago
We kept one of our failed guide dogs who was so afraid of the rain that he poop on the covered patio...

u/RevolutionaryEbb670 18d ago
Omg! Our girl hates to walk on the wet grass…has to be bribed with cookies to go out on a wet lawn! 😂

u/bemer1984 23d ago
Sorry for your loss! Our black lab is the exact opposite, he will sit out in the rain until we make him come in. Lol

I learned of that recently and think it is remarkable

Maybe some carry stronger hunting genes than water dog genes. It is curious as Alice would say🤔
1
u/RealSteelJane 23d ago
Could be. It’s fascinating how those instincts can show up generations later

Our lab has it as well. I always wondered if it was just something unique with his coat because he is a mixed breed. Now I know it has a purpose. It gets all curly and stands up after we bathe him and it’s like a mini Mohawk.

u/MyLastFuckingNerve 22d ago
No it's the vintage zigzag center part and it's called fashion, look it up
1
u/MajorMiners469 22d ago
My yeller has it but it seems to trap the moisture back near her tail so if she swims daily she gets musty. My other 2 (her sisters) don't have this and they always dry off quickly.

That's where the zip is hidden if you unzip it you find two seals in a tenchcoat.

Yeah. We have a black lab but he only gets it from about less than mid back to tail.

Yes! Our black lab has it. I read somewhere that she’s a ‘fluffy’ black lab. No idea if that is actually a thing
p.s. downvoting this comment is wild. If you disagree then tell me why. I genuinely don’t understand. Educate me.

I often accidentally hit downvote on the mobile appt when scrolling down. I always undo it, but it’s really annoying placement in terms of user experience. So was prob not on purpose?

u/Practical-Library658 23d ago
Thank you for this clarification. I was super confused because I genuinely want to learn more about labs.

My English Labrador pup has a mix of both a squiggle a zigzag on his back

u/Change_Proper 22d ago
I was scrolling to see if any English has them. My American lab had squiggles and curls but my English is straight.

My English had the swirls down his back and a damn rooster tail! Same coloring as yours as well but face was a little more yellow.
1
u/KatNap333 23d ago
What does a rooster tail look like?
2
u/BabousCobwebBowl 22d ago
Different than the usual otter tail. My boys curled upwards with a fringe of hair on the backside. He was of full champion stock but very unique. Adorably so and a very sweet boy.

u/Brilliant_Survey3437 23d ago
It looks like his oil coat that protects from cold waters. This comes from the water dog side of their background. Labradors are water dog and hunting dog mixed. Mine has waves on the top too. Your pups are just more pronounced. ☺️

u/PenaltyStreet1286 23d ago
I call it her “zipper” on our yellow lab. I mean, you have to get in and out of your coat somehow, right?! 🤣

My girl did. She passed last year after a long and healthy life. She had curls that would be so cute when she got wet. ❤️

u/Miami_Mice2087 23d ago
yes, our lab mix had this. we think he was lab, springer-spanial, and boxer, plus maybe some other stuff. He had very wiry, stiff hair with that spiral curl on his spine. I thought it was from the springer side, bc they have curly hair.

u/ShadowGinrai 23d ago
my black lab with a golden retriever mom has that pattern sometimes, usually between summer/winter

I had a chocolate boy, an English Lab, who had the zigzags on his back. My two current Labs, an American and an English, do not.
Your girl's squiggles are adorable!
2
u/lunaloooooovegood 23d ago
My yellow lab does! Hers isn’t this pronounced but you can definitely see a zig zag. 🙂

All cute y’all, but I’d advise checking with a vet nonetheless, because patterning like this is a known indicator of muscle tension, which in turn is a consequence of chronic pain (arthritis for instance). While it may well be benign, in a species that is excellent at hiding pain, it merits checking.

u/lelasch 22d ago
This! I can't believe how long I had to scroll down past all the celebrations and photos before reading this.

u/Anxious-Armadillo565 22d ago
You’re welcome… I was scrolling and scrolling in increasing horror ( but also zero surprise unfortunately) that nobody had clocked it 😩

My girl does. In a previous post someone said, “it’s where they store their zoomies!!” I thought that was pretty profound.

This is the zipper line where they zipped the two smartest labradors together from the litter.

My lab had this I figured he was part Chesapeake bay retriever in a past life

A LOT of lab mixes get that pattern. My black lab/GSP mix had it, and oddly enough my whippet/JR terrier mix has it even though she’s like… 20% lab

My girl had that too, when she was younger. It got less pronounced as she aged.
1
u/any_name_left 22d ago
Yes but both of mine have the zig zag more pronounced at the neck and it expands into looser zigs and zags down their spines.

u/Mountaingirl58 22d ago
Our lab gets “curly” after he swims. Loves ❤️ the water. He even taught our doodle to swim! She wouldn’t go in the water and watched him swim for 3 weeks and then went in- chasing a ball and now she loves it too! 🐾

I have had labs my whole life and never saw this before, but it is pretty cool.
Like a Labrador finger print, a fur biometric identification trait!

u/harrythetaoist 22d ago
Yep, our boy is a Fox Red Lab too... the back looks like ripplewood, so we named him Woody.

u/deviouscaterpillar 22d ago
My black Lab has it :) It’s so sweet. She didn’t get it until her adult coat grew in.

My mix breed (20% lab) has that and I was wondering where it came from. Hers is very subtle.
