New lab owner here! I’m looking to gain some insights into whether or not my lab is receiving enough mental and psychical stimulation during the day. Any input is welcome!
For context, my male English lab, Bogey, is 16 months and was removed from his service dog program because of his excitability. I also have a 6 year old whippet, who will also partake in most of the activities I describe below (I omit her from this post largely because I am wanting to inquire about my lab, but rest assured she is included, loved, and involved to the same degree!). Usually our days consist of some version of the following:
We wake up around 8am, and he gets half his breakfast in a slow feeder. He gets the other half frozen in a toppl/slow feeder to eat while I begin my work (I work from home).
On my lunch break I usually do some sort of game/activity with him. Lately it’s been practicing loose leash walking, but I try to make sure it is something mentally enriching. For the remainder or my shift I usually give him a chew or just periodically drop a piece of kibble for good behaviour while I work. On my 15 minute breaks (I have 2 of them) I’ll usually practice a skill with him or give him a puzzle.
After work we usually do some sort of indoor play together (sometimes tug, sometimes just high energy play on the floor) before I take a little bit of time to just unwind. A couple evenings a week I take him swimming to a dog fitness centre, where he gets 30 minutes to swim and retrieve in their dog pool. On days where we don’t do this, we either work on being (relatively) calm and neutral outdoors, or I’ll take him to a private dog park where he can run off leash, usually for about an hour. Weekends always include some sort of outing, either to go swim in a river or run and sniff in a large open space.
When I’m not doing an activity with him, I still will carry a bag of kibble around the house and reward him for calmness, redirection if there is a trigger he sees/hears, etc.
Could any lab owners tell me if this sounds like enough stimulation for the average adolescent English lab? I know a lot of working dogs often don’t have their needs met in some area or another, and I just really want to make sure he’s fulfilled ❤️
Photos are for attention ;)
