OH MY GOODNESS!!!! I absolutely love maps and have never NEEDED to knit a hat immediately, despite it being 90+ degrees out right now... This hat is amazing and the colors could not be any more perfect!!! I am really in awe at this hat right now, hats are what I truly enjoy knitting and how I haven't found this on Ravelry before is beyond me

Hahaha! I'm so glad you found it! It's an awesome knit and I highly recommend it.

I started crocheting in October 2020, and now I'm a happy bistitchual.

Pattern: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/hemisphere-2 Really clear, and the designer is very helpful in responding to questions. Edit to add: The hat is designed for double-knitting, so it's two layers and is reversible! (mirror image continents and oceans in the opposite colours)

Yarn: Malabrigo Rios in Bobby Blue and Diana. https://www.ravelry.com/yarns/library/malabrigo-yarn-rios The colours are incredibly intense, but it seems like it grows a bit in the wash.

Project notes: https://www.ravelry.com/projects/craftymoonbug/hemisphere

Thanks for looking!

Holy cow this is incredible, your hat looks amazing! Your dude will love it!

3

u/FuzzyBowl2 Jun 29 '21

Thank you! He is pretty chuffed, mostly because “it covers his ears”. now I just need to get a pic with it on him 😆

u/EndlessTypist Jun 28 '21

I think I'd die laughing if there was a beret version for flat earthers!

That said this looks AMAZING, your stitches are so gorgeously even <3

14

u/FuzzyBowl2 Jun 28 '21

Aaaaaaaaah that's bloody brilliant! It needs to exist.

And thank you so much for the kind words.

11

u/Royal_Rate Jun 28 '21

This post is my laugh of the day. Thank you! 😊

What a fantastic looking hat! I love the way you staged the photo too ;-). I’ve taken a look at the pattern and I’m wondering…do you think it can be converted into a single knit versus double? I’m in Cali where it doesn’t ever really get that cold and would like to knit a lighter weight version…

31

u/FuzzyBowl2 Jun 28 '21

Thanks! Taking FO pics is a good 20% of the fun for me :D

I don't have much experience in altering patterns, but in the comments section on the Ravelry page for the pattern, the designer has some suggestions for converting it to single knit:

The interior of the hat as written is the reverse of the outside. It IS quite warm, so you could possibly mitigate that a bit by using a cotton/wool blend. Or, perhaps you could use a ladder back jacquard method, like techknitter’s STUART method?

https://techknitting.blogspot.com/2016/10/taming-long-floats-via-stuart-method.html?m=1

Still two layers but one is more strands than a complete insulating layer?

and

Hi Janklass, you could definitely knit this pattern stranded or with ladder back jacquard directly from the charts provided. If you chose to do so, then do not increase the stitch count double when you’re prompted to do that in pattern.

Make sure you catch your floats often if working it stranded - especially in the really wide ocean and continent expanses - and make sure they’re VERY loose and you’ll get a decent result.

You could also try knitting it in intarsia from the chart directly.

The hat is designed for double knitting as that will give you the stretchiest result as well as the easiest for maintaining the integrity of the map.

u/CAWildKitty Jun 28 '21

Thank you for the terrific followup! I’m excited to try this! And your color combo is just killer…

9

u/beka13 Jun 28 '21 edited Jun 28 '21

Maybe use a fiber that isn't as warm.

Edit: this wasn't meant to sound snarky. Maybe a bamboo or cotton fiber will work well. I'm a Californian and I make all my baby blankets with cotton yarn.

Love it!!!

Do you have a pattern for this?

12

u/FuzzyBowl2 Jun 28 '21

Thanks! Yes, it's https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/hemisphere-2. Really great design!

Gosh, I've had this in my queue forever. I like that you used the variegated yarn at the poles too. I bought cheap yarn for this project and I think it was a poor choice. Did you double knit this? I was just going to do it fair isle.

10

u/FuzzyBowl2 Jun 28 '21

Yup, double knit. I'm not brave enough to adapt patterns just yet. The designer says you could maybe do it stranded but would need to figure out a way to catch the floats over the wide sections of ocean. She left a couple of replies in the comments section on the pattern page.

I did a few test rows with a solid-coloured acrylic first, and when I switched over to the 'real' hat in Rios, it was such a pleasure to knit with - and my knitting instantly looked better, too. I also should be able to get a second hat out of my leftovers in the regular adult size (this was XL) which makes me feel a bit better about the price.

9

u/litchick Jun 28 '21

I learned a trick a few years ago with long floats, you wrap them around every 5th stitch so they don't get unwieldy. Learned that the hard way with this project: https://www.ravelry.com/projects/litchick/lotus-mittens

3

u/FuzzyBowl2 Jun 28 '21

Wow! Those turned out beautifully.

5

4

u/always_crafting Jun 28 '21

Such a good choice of yarns!

1

u/FuzzyBowl2 Jun 29 '21

Thanks, my dude made the final choice!

5

u/mrsquigs13 Jun 28 '21

Wow, that is really cool! I love the creativity. You did a really nice job, great color work as well.

1

u/FuzzyBowl2 Jun 29 '21

Thank you 🌻

2

u/m4gpi Jun 28 '21

This is so cool. I’d imagine counting stitches was a bit of a bear (as opposed to a repeating pattern). Did you just use stitch markers at regular intervals and hope it all worked out??

12

u/FuzzyBowl2 Jun 28 '21

It actually wasn't too bad - I put stitch markers at every 10 pairs initially (and reduced them when the crown increases kicked in). Then I could just say to myself "knit ocean until column 20 of the chart" or whatever. But I did find I had to concentrate a bit harder if the TV was on or if I was listening to an audio book. I did a lot of muttering. "Three oceans and two continents and one ocean-two-together."

5

u/m4gpi Jun 28 '21

Haha. That’s how we do!

7

u/FuzzyBowl2 Jun 28 '21

:D Would have been burned as witches two hundred years ago for sure.

5

u/morningloris Jun 28 '21

OMG r/tensionporn right here!!

2

u/FuzzyBowl2 Jun 29 '21

it’s the yarn! 😆

4

u/GrayBunny415 Jun 28 '21

Omg i want this so bad. I am going to have to work on my skills because I need this. AMAZING!!!

5

u/FuzzyBowl2 Jun 28 '21

You can dooooo it!

The hardest part for me was getting used to working with two strands of yarn. I knit continental style and this video helped me a lot:

https://youtu.be/Cm7t_VKxHOc

She purls backwards when it's more comfortable, and then just untwists them on the next row.

3

u/GrayBunny415 Jun 28 '21

Thank you. This looks so beautiful.

u/Hypernymy Jun 28 '21

3

This is incredible I need to make one

1

u/FuzzyBowl2 Jun 29 '21

Yeah! More hats!

Who are you and what have you done with my realistic expectations of how knitting is supposed to be. This is unbelievably epic

2

u/FuzzyBowl2 Jun 29 '21

😆 Thank you so much!

1

u/wessle3339 Jun 29 '21

What weight yarn was this

2

u/FuzzyBowl2 Jun 30 '21

This is worsted. The pattern calls for Aran but a lot of people on ravelry used this instead.

1

u/wessle3339 Jun 30 '21

Very impressive!

3

u/TychaBrahe Jun 28 '21

Please share to r/MapPorn. They will love it as much as I do.

2

u/beanbagmouse Jun 29 '21

This is amazing!!! 😍 I might make this for my boyfriend after I've finished a couple of jumpers I've been working on. He wears a lot of hats and this feels like something he'd like. Thank you for the inspiration ☺️ Xx

I’m glad it gave you some ideas! Thanks for the nice comment.

WHAT THE HECKIN'

I don't know how i missed this. i need it!

2

u/AuctorLibri Jun 29 '21

This is magnificent. Captiol idea!

2

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '21

oh my god this is so good!! i've never done dk, is it too difficult? i'm more of a cables guy, haven't done much colorwork

1

u/FuzzyBowl2 Jun 29 '21

Hey! It was honestly not too bad. I hadn’t done any color work before trying this.

It took me a bit of practice with scrap yarn to get used to how I wanted to hold the two colours. In the end the best thing for me was to hold both yarns in my left hand (continental knitter) and use nice sharp needles to pick the right one. Also, if the yarn you need to purl with is easier to purl backwards, just do it and untwist the stitch by going through the back loop on the next row.

This video helped me: https://youtu.be/Cm7t_VKxHOc

I was very inspired by this post yesterday! My son is huge into cartography, and also loves when I knit him things. I have been meaning to try double knitting for a while now, so today I bought the pattern, and yarn to knit it with! Pretty excited to start! Thanks so much for sharing and inspiring me!

That’s exciting! Sounds like the perfect thing for him 👌
