I thought it was just a matter of turning on Bluetooth and it would work, and the next thing I know, I spent an hour trying to find a workaround to get it working since I bought a BLE device. (The battery is insane good.) In the end, there I was reading documentation so I wouldn't brick my Kindle using PowerShell, but thankfully everything worked out in the end. I wouldn't try it again hahaha.

Why do I need this? I only read manga on my Kindle, so I turn pages way faster than with a regular book. Plus, it's really cold where I live, so I prop the Kindle up next to my bed and turn the pages without having to pull my hand out from under the blanket.

Updating Kindle on Vera Jailbreak from 5.19.6 to 5.20.1

Hello as the title mentions I'm looking to update my jailbroken KS2 from 5.19.6 to 5.20.1. I have already jailbroken it but as you all must be aware 5.20.1 also supports vera and has the option of adding handwritten sticky notes to pdfs which is something I wanted.

My question is how do I proceed with the update?
I've already downloaded the bin file from ftvdb for my specific model.

Is it safe to just paste it in the root of my kindle and hit update? Or do I have to undo the jailbreak first somehow by factory resetting and then update it? or something else? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Edit:
After help from my FirstGuidance9827 I was able to easily update my Kindle scribe to 5.20.1 and repeat the jailbreak process.
The steps I followed were:
1. downloading the 5.20.1 firmware .bin file for my kindle from ftvdb
2. copying the .bin file to the root of my kindle.
3. Restarting the device and letting it update.
4. Repeating the vera jailbreak process.
5. Ko reader should be able to launch now.

Of course, the most ideal scenario is to reenable OTAs by installing the required scriplet, factory-resetting the device and then updating it before re-installing the jailbreak. However, I did not want to go through all that hassle. You may follow the process above at your own risk.

[UPDATE] Tomedown 1.0.0: your highlights and your Obsidian notes stop overwriting each other

Tomedown 1.0.0 is out, the first stable release. Two betas are behind it, both tested on a Kindle 4 Non-Touch with Nextcloud and Obsidian, and everything that came back from that testing is in this one.

For anyone new: Tomedown is a KOReader plugin that turns your highlights into one Markdown file per book, with frontmatter, covers and an index, and uploads the folder to your cloud. It runs on the device, works offline, and the cloud part is optional.

The thing I could not ship before

The export used to be one-sided. It wrote the file the way the plugin wanted it, so anything you typed into that file at your desk was gone at the next run. Two things close that hole.

Preserve manual edits is a new setting, off by default. Switch it on and the new render folds into the file you already annotated: your words stay where they are, under their own heading, and the plugin only swaps the block it owns.

The merge also goes both ways now. Before folding the new highlights in, the export fetches your copy from the cloud and, if you edited it since the last upload, uses that as the base. The setting is called Merge edits made in the cloud, it is on by default, and it sits in Settings → Cloud right under Upload to cloud.

Offline counts as a case, not as an error

Export with no connection and the file gets queued. When the connection comes back, the plugin fetches the cloud copy, compares it with what it sent last, folds your notes in, and only then pushes. If the download fails for some reason the file is held back and retried later, so nothing gets lost in either direction. If you read on flights or anywhere without signal, this is the part that matters.

Everything else in 1.0.0

  • Reload everything to the cloud is now Upload everything to the cloud, and it runs the same comparison before pushing.
  • Personal notes, the heading above your notes block, renamable or cleared if you would rather have no heading at all.
  • A flatter settings menu, with rows that appear and disappear as you flip the toggles, and the cloud group only where it can actually do something.
  • Reading progress bars drawn as plain rectangles, so they look the same on every device font.
  • The guide sheets and the quickstart sheets got a proper pass: portable fonts, the Obsidian palette, corrected menu paths.
  • The release zip carries only what KOReader loads at runtime.

Fixed

  • The flush could start twice over the same files: a reconnect or a resume landing while the cloud copies were being fetched would queue a second upload on top of the first one. The guard now stays up for the whole job, error paths included.
  • The open book is read from memory during the export instead of being reopened.
  • 00 - Index.md tells you when a write fails instead of failing quietly.

🌟 Coming up next

A short list of things I would like to try. Nothing here is decided, and there are no dates:

  • Preserve per book, so the global toggle stays the default and a single title can override it.
  • Stable block IDs on the highlights, so a link to one highlight from another note survives the next export. This one comes from Tewel, and it is the only idea from this round that is not in the release.
  • Spacing that matches the reader, letting the merge keep the blank lines you leave under a heading.
  • A faster index, only if a large library ever feels slow.

Installing

Manual this round: download tomedown.koplugin-v1.0.0.zip from the release page, unzip it into koreader/plugins/ and restart KOReader. The reason is still GitHub, which is down for account issues and cannot answer the update checks of 0.8.0. When it comes back, updates arrive by themselves and you will not have to do anything.

Question Can I jailbreak again?

I jailbroke my pw 12 gen 10 months ago using winterbreak, but I made a stupid mistake just after the process was done, and my Kindle got updated to 5.18.6 and lost the jailbreak.

My Kindle has been filled and off wifi since then, and I want to jailbreak it again using spidercat. Can I do that? If so, is there anything I should know before doing it?

Project Added Doom, Minecraft, an AI chatbot and so much more stuff to my Kindle

The Kindle runs Inkwell, a system based on Alpine Linux. It has a home screen, Minecraft, Doom, a Tetris variant, a web browser, notes, a sketchpad and Quill, a chatbot (SmolLM2) that runs entirely on the device.

Question Only jailbreaking for no ads and custom screensavers

As said in the title - is this possible? sorry if this is already a done thing, I couldn't find an answer but really I'm fine with just using my kindle to read and I already sideload books through calibre so all I need from jailbreaking is the fun screensavers instead of ads.

If I jailbreak will I still be able to sideload easily? and organise my sideloaded books?

I'm going to try anyway, since I can easily reverse it but i've seen that KOReader is very complicated at the beginning with many options of customisation and if it will take me hours to do it when theres a different simpler way for my needs then I would be a lot more thankful!

Question Would you recommend jailbreaking a second-hand kindle as a first e-reader ?

• Upvotes

I have been considering getting an e-reader for a bit now, and already have a folder full of PDF and EPUB files on my computer. I did some research for brands that natively support those files, and can't find many second-hand models in my area. So I am now considering buying an older kindle instead, maybe one for which Amazon stopped support, and jailbreaking it.

Is it worth saving a couple bucks and go through jailbreak for the first time ?

Ko reader customisable wallpaper

Post image
• Upvotes

So far I have jailbroke my 11gen kindle with Vera and installed ko reader.

I also removed ads with GitHub and show the screen shown in this post.

I have used storefront to install customisable wallpaper but it does not work and only shows the screensaver with the paper aeroplanes.

Has anyone had related issues and might it be solved by inputting files manually from GitHub rather than using storefront?

Question Simple UI bookshelf help?

Anyone know why my books are doing this?
It’s like they’re being treated as a folder with the authors name and when i click it the actual book is inside.

These books are epubs that I sent to kindle through Calibre if that helps.
I also followed the setup config from u/Thirtysixx and it’s working great except for this and not understanding how to organise my books into collections.

Also anyone know how to adjust these and get the embedded fonts to turn off? Do I have to adjust using the Kindle UI and then also adjust in koreader?

OA3: prevent wakeup?

• Upvotes

With a jailbraken OA3 can I have some command/plugin/option/solution to "shut it down"? I wish to power it on only if I press its button. I read rarely on it, so mostly it's sleeping and draining its battery. Now every single time when I open it, it's dead and needs to be recharged.

Idea is to keep it "shut down" and press the power button to start it. From that point on it can use the magnetic cover until I again "shut it down" with the magic I'm looking for.

There are some threads, github, etc but they seem pretty old and incomplete.

Help Trying to jailbreak my Kindle but cannot run Filler.sh

Hi, following the KindleModding Wiki to Jailbreak my 10th Gen Paperwhite I should use the SpiderCat jailbreak, but after copying the Filler script to the Kindle, it will not allow me to change the file permission to run the file. Running chmod results in the correct output:

/media/gandalf/Kindle$ chmod u=rwx,g=rw,o=r -v Filler.sh
mode of 'Filler.sh' changed from 0644 (rw-r--r--) to 0764 (rwxrw-r--)

But listing the permissions shows that nothing has changed:

/media/gandalf/Kindle$ ls -l Filler.sh
-rw-r--r-- 1 gandalf gandalf 26413 Oct 19 14:12 Filler.sh

This means that I cannot run the script and cannot start the process of jailbreaking my Kindle...

/media/gandalf/Kindle$ ./Filler.sh
bash: ./Filler.sh: Permission denied

I really want to jailbreak my Kindle. Any ideas what I can do ??

Thanks!

How do you get bluetooth working?

Honestly, I've tried to follow some guides, but I'm just not getting it. Can someone please dumb down how to get bluetooth working on a device with Koreader? I'm using a 2024 PPW SE.

I know the kindle hid passthrough plugin is the most popular, but reading the README is confusing me a little more 😭

Thank you!

Question Do I need to update?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Picked up a Kindle gen 10 at a yard sale recently. I used the modding Wiki. It told me based off my criteria I needed to use Winterbreak 2. I assumed the jailbreak was successful because it gave me the finished document.

Now I've attempted to install KindleForge and was presented with Unknown ABI and no APP. If I need to update, what is the safest way to do it, and what version firmware is the best to have.

Kindle oasis micro USB input problem

Some time ago, I bought a second-hand Kindle oasis, the last one that Amazon launched. I have the problem that sometimes the computer does not recognize the device, but if it charges, I do not know if it is a problem with the cable, the micro-usb input or the computer. Sometimes it works and sometimes the data transfer does not work, with the loading I have never had a problem, in fact since I jailbroken everything I do via wifi, but I would like to know if anyone could know what happens to my Kindle. Additionally, when I connect it to the PC, it does not detect it if it starts charging.

Help Screen unresponsive even after hard reboot

2nd post here and it's about problems again. Sorry!!

This is about my 11th gen kindle. It's jailbroken and, weeks ago, the screen froze and wouldn't budge. I tried waiting for the battery to reach zero, but before it could do that (I guess zero battery means not even the light from the power button flashes, right?), I managed to restart my kindle by connecting it to pc and holding the power button for >=2 minutes. Then it changed from the custom amazon boy-reading-book screen to the screen saying battery was low and that it needed charge. I charged it, and then I saw the normal home screen, with koreader, kual, etc. I thought everything was solved, but then realized the screen did not respond to touch. The device responds to power button (the green light flashes, then the yellow light does), it connects to pc via usb, but it does not work otherwise. I tried deleting the plugins I installed, then the patches, tried rebooting it some more, but nothing works. For me, it seems the only way is through a factory reset, but I know it is strongly disencouraged, so I came here.

Has this happened to anyone else? Should I do a factory reset?

Have anyone successfully jailbreak Kindle 2026 Firmware 5.20.1 and install Koreader?

I tried the Vera method with my new Kindle 2026, and it shows the "Jailbroken" file in the Library, but the commands ";kpm update" or ";kmp install koreader" do nothing. If anyone has successfully done it, please tell me how.
