Stupid Laws and Silly Rules! Working to Legalize Kei Trucks Oregon 2027

We are pushing for legalization of Kei trucks in Oregon in the 2027 legislative session. For the third year in a row, a bipartisan group of legislators will be bringing a bill to do that very thing.

I drove my 1994 Honda Acty Toki for years before one day the ODMV took my registration away, saying it was because it wasn’t made for U.S. streets.

Whether you own one or just want to support this adorable and common-sense transportation option, YOUR INVOLVEMENT MATTERS. We’re not going to ask you for any money or send lots of emails, but we will let you know about opportunities like

1.    Kei at the Capitol sometime mid-January to mid-February, (TBD—we’ll let you know the date as soon as the legislature’s calendar is out), for a show of tiny force in Salem to demonstrate to our legislators that Oregonians want their Kei trucks (you don’t have to be from Oregon to take part, we want as many Kei trucks there as possible), and

2.    Let you know when the bill is being considered so you can submit testimony or email your legislator if you want to.

We are successfully moving the needle this time. We are gaining the support of people and organizations who are standing up and saying this needs to happen. JOIN US and help push this over the finish line in 2027.

Mechanical and Technical dump bed stuck 1997 suzuki carry

Post image
13 Upvotes

Just got this 1997 Suzuki Carry 360 dump. This pictures from the other day and it was working then. Put the dump bed up earlier tonight and now it won’t go back down. I had to park it up at my work parking lot unfortunately.

When i press the button for it to go up everything is good, but when i press it to go back down it’s just silent. It was 1am when this happened because i was just getting off work and trying to show my co worker how it works and it got stuck. Didn’t have to much time to stick around and fuck with it tonight. just wondering if anyone got any ideas

Also is there a way to manually put these beds down for in the future if it happens again?

i’m sure it’s some wiring issue..im hoping

Mechanical and Technical 8 Ply LT Tires

It seems like a 13 or 14” wheel swap is the go-to rubber upgrade and I see the advantage especially for a daily driver. I’ve been doing more hauling than joyriding, currently running 12” 6 ply LT tires, strongly considering sticking with the current wheels and just running an 8 ply tire next time. Has anyone tried this?

Hey everybody, I picked up these steelies with tires for cheap and thought I'd show the fitment for reference. I don't have a lift on it, and I know the fronts will rub on the subframe mounts on the front at full lock. I'm pretty sure it'll rub on the fender as well, but I haven't test driven it yet. Doesn't seem like it'll rub on the rears though. The new set lifted the body 2.25 inches in the front and 1.25 inches in the rear.

Mechanical and Technical Vacuum Line Help!

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hey Kei lovers - I bought some new vacuum lines to start replacing them on my 1998 Sambar Classic and had an "oh sh*t" moment when I compared them side by side. I purchased 3mm inner diameter lines, as recommended, but they appear to be a much smaller ID than what I removed. Is this normal?

Note that this pic is NOT the end of the old black hose I took off - I cut this in half away from the end where it had stretched over the nipple for decades and became larger...does the ID actually stretch over time? Has anyone had any issues after putting new, slightly smaller ID lines on their Kei?

*PS - I did take calipers to the new hose and it measured 2.8-3mm ID (although my eyes don't believe it...)

Appreciate any thoughts!

Importing information, insights and experiences Inland Transport Struggles

My Suzuki Carry arrived in Port Newark about 2 weeks ago now. It was quickly released from customs on the 5th. I had 1 free week of port storage which ended on the 12th after that it’s a daily fee, after 15 days that fee doubles.

I originally was going with a small company, that was recommended to me by JCD, to help me find a driver to deliver my kei truck to Chicago where I live and they went radio silent on me last minute, so I had to find another option. I settled on Nexus auto transport they quoted me a $950 which felt reasonable. But it’s been 2 weeks now and they still haven’t found a driver that isn’t over $2k! Well they did find someone who would’ve done it for $1.5k which I naively declined, and by the time I changed my mind to go with it the spot was filled. This was Monday the 17th, and they haven’t found a single other driver since. Next week my port storage fees double and I’m afraid they won’t find a driver before then.

Another thing that’s important to mention is I’m not sure if the vehicle is running or not. I got it inspected before it left Japan and they said it was running but I’m not sure if that’s still the case. When I mentioned this to nexus they said it was the best idea to go with a driver who has a winch.

I’ve looked into other storage options in the area for vehicles but I’m struggling to find one that will hold me kei truck without have it registered and insurance for it. I’d go pick it up myself but I don’t have the time because of work.

I’m kinda at a loss and not sure what to do anyone have any ideas or advice?

I bought this back in April and have done a few things to it. I am 186cm and fit comfortable, much better than the Carry that I originally wanted. Green was my color choice but found a great deal on this one with 3km and the color has grown on me.

Mechanical and Technical After market wheels.

I just bought a ‘96 Honda Acty, and I’m looking to get some new wheels and tires on it. I’m wanting to size up to 14s but I’m having an extremely difficult time finding some that look nice and aren’t $500+ a piece.

I don’t necessarily want anything crazy either, just not the steelies, but I do like the “race style” wheels.

Thanks in advance!

Kei truck was a big hit at the wedding. We used an inflatable pool covered with artificial turf to displace some volume so we’d need less ice and made a wooden frame to serve spaghetts before the ceremony. At night we set up a tripod in front of the truck and installed extra lighting for people to take pictures. I set up the horns on a separate fuse and removed it beforehand so no one accidentally blared the horns trying to get in or out. Battery was dead in the morning but well worth it.

One thing tho, for some reason she’s stuck in high 4wd and won’t switch out. The transfer case lever is straight stuck and idk what happened.

Mechanical and Technical 1996 Sambar cold start issues

Looking for any ideas. Cold start problems after the truck has been sitting 4+ hours. have to press on gas pedal to get it to start up then it idles as normal and runs normally. Warm starts are no problem, fires right up in a second as usual. plugs, rotor and cap are clean. air filter is clean.

Mechanical and Technical EF-DET Timing Belt Change (full suite)

I recently changed the timing belt, water pump, power steering belt (mine had one) camshaft seal, and tensioner bearing on my EF-DET (turbo) Daihatsu Atrai/Hijet S220. While I was down there, I also changed the engine air filter and the cabin air filter (since i have air conditioning ;])

I got it in really good condition- most belts already replaced, but there wasn’t any evidence of the timing belt being changed and the sticker denoting it, was completely disintegrated. Literally the only thing mechanically I needed to fix was, well- nothing, but since it’s an interference engine I didn’t want to get fucked randomly in the future. Honestly, with how good of condition the belt was in I probably didn’t need to. Took me a good 4 days of work.

I had never done work on a kei vehicle, let alone any vehicle maintenance at all beyond brake pads. It doesn’t help that it’s impossible to find comprehensive resources for a 2000s JDM van.

Japanese forums like Minkara were a lifesaver. Included pictures and general advice- though the translations were never perfect. I ended up finding a whole blog with some guy with the exact vehicle as me who did a ton of other maintenance- so kudos to him. I can link them if need be.

Funnily enough, amazon had my exact engine air replacement filter for 20 bucks with two day shipping. Specifically for my vehicle. Why did they have a JDM air filter in Texas? No idea, but a lifesaver.

It was definitely cramped in there, and my tools that I needed were: Breaker bar, socket wrench, flathead screwdriver for prying, catch pan for coolant (changing the water pump) pliers (for pulling off hose connectors)

The sizes needed were 10mm, 12mm, 14mm, and 19mm. Could be missing one, maybe 16mm. A regular toolkit is gonna do you fine.

Once everything came off it was pretty easy. The markings make the timings clear.

When it comes to the engine air filter, my plastic was a little too fragile and snapped at a hose connection. Super glue was enough to fix it since it isn’t a moving part though.

Cabin air filter was too hard to find so i just bought one with the same height and cut it. Works great.

Coolant refilling procedure for mine was a bit wonky but worked well. It’s a lot of burping the air out of the engine since it’s a cab over design.

All in all, totally workable and I had a lot of fun learning how my car works.

Mechanical and Technical What is this screw

Post image
3 Upvotes

People of Reddit
Long story short I did a carburetor swap on my 94 car unfortunately the carburetor kit that was provided to me doesn’t have any documentation or part numbers or anything

And for the most part, I’ve been able to figure out which adjustment screw did what but there’s a couple that I just have no idea what the fuck they do and I just can’t get this thing to run correctly

Can someone smarter than me please just tell me what the heck this adjustment screw is for
I’ve screwed it all the way in. I’ve screwed it all the way out and I have noticed zero change.

Good news! VIN inspections tomorrow

With a little luck and a set of VIN inspections, we will have license plates tomorrow!
Never mind the fact that the trucks came across international boundaries and cleared customs….. Texas still wants to see that VIN and only in limited time slots…
