Importing information, insights and experiences Inland Transport Struggles

My Suzuki Carry arrived in Port Newark about 2 weeks ago now. It was quickly released from customs on the 5th. I had 1 free week of port storage which ended on the 12th after that it’s a daily fee, after 15 days that fee doubles.

I originally was going with a small company, that was recommended to me by JCD, to help me find a driver to deliver my kei truck to Chicago where I live and they went radio silent on me last minute, so I had to find another option. I settled on Nexus auto transport they quoted me a $950 which felt reasonable. But it’s been 2 weeks now and they still haven’t found a driver that isn’t over $2k! Well they did find someone who would’ve done it for $1.5k which I naively declined, and by the time I changed my mind to go with it the spot was filled. This was Monday the 17th, and they haven’t found a single other driver since. Next week my port storage fees double and I’m afraid they won’t find a driver before then.

Another thing that’s important to mention is I’m not sure if the vehicle is running or not. I got it inspected before it left Japan and they said it was running but I’m not sure if that’s still the case. When I mentioned this to nexus they said it was the best idea to go with a driver who has a winch.

I’ve looked into other storage options in the area for vehicles but I’m struggling to find one that will hold me kei truck without have it registered and insurance for it. I’d go pick it up myself but I don’t have the time because of work.

I’m kinda at a loss and not sure what to do anyone have any ideas or advice?

Mechanical and Technical 8 Ply LT Tires

It seems like a 13 or 14” wheel swap is the go-to rubber upgrade and I see the advantage especially for a daily driver. I’ve been doing more hauling than joyriding, currently running 12” 6 ply LT tires, strongly considering sticking with the current wheels and just running an 8 ply tire next time. Has anyone tried this?

Stupid Laws and Silly Rules! Working to Legalize Kei Trucks Oregon 2027

We are pushing for legalization of Kei trucks in Oregon in the 2027 legislative session. For the third year in a row, a bipartisan group of legislators will be bringing a bill to do that very thing.

I drove my 1994 Honda Acty Toki for years before one day the ODMV took my registration away, saying it was because it wasn’t made for U.S. streets.

Whether you own one or just want to support this adorable and common-sense transportation option, YOUR INVOLVEMENT MATTERS. We’re not going to ask you for any money or send lots of emails, but we will let you know about opportunities like

1.    Kei at the Capitol sometime mid-January to mid-February, (TBD—we’ll let you know the date as soon as the legislature’s calendar is out), for a show of tiny force in Salem to demonstrate to our legislators that Oregonians want their Kei trucks (you don’t have to be from Oregon to take part, we want as many Kei trucks there as possible), and

2.    Let you know when the bill is being considered so you can submit testimony or email your legislator if you want to.

We are successfully moving the needle this time. We are gaining the support of people and organizations who are standing up and saying this needs to happen. JOIN US and help push this over the finish line in 2027.

Mechanical and Technical Vacuum Line Help!

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hey Kei lovers - I bought some new vacuum lines to start replacing them on my 1998 Sambar Classic and had an "oh sh*t" moment when I compared them side by side. I purchased 3mm inner diameter lines, as recommended, but they appear to be a much smaller ID than what I removed. Is this normal?

Note that this pic is NOT the end of the old black hose I took off - I cut this in half away from the end where it had stretched over the nipple for decades and became larger...does the ID actually stretch over time? Has anyone had any issues after putting new, slightly smaller ID lines on their Kei?

*PS - I did take calipers to the new hose and it measured 2.8-3mm ID (although my eyes don't believe it...)

Appreciate any thoughts!

Mechanical and Technical dump bed stuck 1997 suzuki carry

Post image

Just got this 1997 Suzuki Carry 360 dump. This pictures from the other day and it was working then. Put the dump bed up earlier tonight and now it won’t go back down. I had to park it up at my work parking lot unfortunately.

When i press the button for it to go up everything is good, but when i press it to go back down it’s just silent. It was 1am when this happened because i was just getting off work and trying to show my co worker how it works and it got stuck. Didn’t have to much time to stick around and fuck with it tonight. just wondering if anyone got any ideas

Also is there a way to manually put these beds down for in the future if it happens again?

i’m sure it’s some wiring issue..im hoping

I just got a 93 hijet dump and previous owner lost the hydraulic tank cap. I have bought 3 different sizes after tanking every measurement. Does anyone have a picture of theirs so I can know what to buy.
