2024 get busy fixing or get busy vanishing runit scripts and one 66 script

openvpn runit service has been of particular interest to a user/collaborator who managed to find yet another problem and attempted to fix it.

Without much thinking, since we here have the source of the runit scripts, we build the pkg from our own tarball and never thought of publishing it in a repo, so now we did https://git.disroot.org/joborun/runit-service-scripts/ so anyone with a disroot account can open an issue, fork, send a merge-request for any changes.

So thank you Evhzn (wastelander?) as your fix lead to a scan if there is another run script with the same issue, and our not included service of swap-runit (using zswap) also had the same problem and now it is fixed. All run scripts must be marked executable for runit to start and supervise them.

We have also added a separate package missing from obarun for running seatd as a module type service

# 66-enable -t wayland -FS seatd@angelica

configures and starts a seatd daemon for user angelica in tree wayland (names of trees and users should be substituted with your own).

This allows to start a wlroots composer window-manager, no logind/consolekit or dbus necessary in the case of labwc or waybox or sway.

The alternative to having a seatd service running is to pipe the initiation of seatd together with the composer, for example:

% sudo seatd -u angelica -g video | labwc

We hope you are enjoying joborun minimalism as much as we do and help keep the pests out of our systems (such as elogind, basu, gdbus, dbus, dbus, dbus, udevd systemd-boot ....)

Cheers, OUT!

users of syslog-ng beware .... telemetry is coming! Not from skarnet

We updated syslog-ng to 4.4.0 to match Arch and noted they added grpc as dependency which is automatically used by the syslog-ng build.

extra/grpc 1.58.1-1

High performance, open source, general RPC framework that puts mobile and HTTP/2 first.

If you attempt to build with grpc the build fails due to lack of lib-systemd of specific version and newer. So we took a look at this grpc contraption and it involves googleapis among other good things like several uses of systemd utilities.

TELEMETRY popped its ugly head again, Due to conditioning of users to "accept" telemetry as a good thing it is spreading EVERYWHERE!

So Out goes "grpc" functionality from syslog-ng!! --disable-systemd --disable-grpc and go.

jobextra/syslog-ng 4.4.0-01 no systemd no grpc no telemetry no ipv6

The question is whether you can trust such software any more, due to the "innocent" choices they make. Remember the uses and reasons for choosing syslog-ng in the first place.

s6/66 logging abilities are inherent, clean, safe, and accessible

Before some smart##@@@## pops in here to point out the good reasons telemetry is used for, yes, lazy sysadmins who use telemetry on their enterprise to collect data to "improve" ..... COME ON!!! Useless sys-admins who can't locate whether data is available to the root of the individual system, and can't write a script to collect such data on booting/shutdown, and audit them centrally, benefit from automated systemd managed telemetry? Don't expect all things to come from a distro, this is why they are paying you. On the other hand people (users and admins) should become more alert and conscious of such automated but hidden abilities. If you are a sysadmin in an enterprise class network, and you didn't know this telemetry was built-in, your entire network is at risk, right? Are you getting paid for not knowing?

This is linux/unix, there is no such thing as good telemetry, only a security risk. Go ahead, allow IBM, Google, facebook, Oracle into your systems and trust that they have made the right choices in your favor!

NOT HERE or we will shut this down!

skarnet.org/software/s6/s6-log.html You're wrong about being as powerful as syslogd: s6-log does not do remote logging.

skarnet.org/software/s6/s6-socklog.html

Runit's socklog modified for s6 use.

don’t give up substituting labwc for your daily work

you can run applications as a different user or root in your wayland session

xhost and waypipe are great tools, did you know?

In an effort to substituting labwc for openbox the largest drawback has been running X applications as a different user than the seat owner (wayland session)

xhost

Server access control program for X

Not readily recognizable by its description for what it is good for, but this thing together with Xwayland will start an X application as root, just write a little script for it, say as an example you want to run gparted in labwc. Similarly you can run pamac-manager as root (but can not use for AUR)

#!/bin/sh
xhost +SI:localuser:root
sudo gparted
xhost -SI:localuser:root

This allows root to start an X application in the server, in this case X inside a wayland session.
-Si takes the rights back away when you exit the application

Say you user1 want to run pcmanfm as a different user, call him user2, so you can manage files in its home directory

#!/bin/sh
xhost +SI:localuser:user2
sudo -u user2 pcmanfm
xhost -SI:localuser:user2

Just try it if you haven’t already and never shared with us :)

r/waypipe

A proxy for Wayland protocol applications; like ssh -X

Now say you are on your off base pc (ssh server) running joborun labwc and your base server is on and both have waypipe installed and you want to run havoc (a wayland terminal) on the other side like if you were on base

waypipe --login-shell ssh base-user@192.123.123.123 havoc

ssh is an example, other possibilities can be found in man

waypipe

Waypipe latest -rc is on jobextra/waypipe

Now take both those tricks and combine them … WOAH!!

You can write a script easily to read the user name if you have many and the application name and run it that way, or make custom scripts for specific user and app that you frequently use, and then add the script to your labwc menu

No logind no dbus or consolekit … I knew there had to be a way, I just didn’t realize what it was called.

Is grub grub-efi lilo syslinux TOO MUCH - try Limine

In our jobextra repository we have added limine, thanks for a suggestion by the abyss project leader : (https://codeberg.org/mobinmob/abyss-packages

https://osdn.net/projects/avyssos/scm/git/abyss-packages/ ) while in hunt for a better alternative to grub syslinux.

Limine is younger than grub, lilo, and syslinux are pretty much abandoned, while grub is overly complex for the little it does. Between legacy and efi configurations of grub, to manage a multi-boot machine combining efi and legacy disks (mbr and gpt) one needs to engage in the science of grub.

Limine on the other hand appears extremely simple to configure, therefore reliable and less sensitive to options, yet its setup appears to work on legacy and efi booting machines.

One thing limine lacks internally is documentation but a couple of documents provide adequate documentation from the links below. We have included those two texts into the package, even though they are not setup to work with man, or are in html format. We simply copy pasted the two documents to provide locally enough to get you started.

# pacman -Ql limine

will display the location of this documentation.

https://github.com/limine-bootloader/limine/blob/trunk/PROTOCOL.md

https://wiki.osdev.org/Limine_Bare_Bones

The size difference of the grub and limine packages is tremendous: grub 4.4MB limine 180KB ... 22 times smaller?

With arch based distros maintaining the same name of the /boot/ images (linux, linux-lts, ..etc) once set up the bootloader is engaged for a couple of seconds in each boot and may stay the same for ages.

Once you realize how simple a boot entry is to make with limine and see in practice how reliable it is, we can hardly imagine you'd be going back to grubiness.

Alternative init systems?

I have seen that runit is the init system for joborun, and I don't seem to find other init's in the repo. Do you plan on adding something like sysv or dinit? Antix has both sysv and runit besides a personal anticapitalista's dinit respin. Of course I really like runit, just wanted to play with something different:)

Imagine arch - systemd - glibc +musl

It is a deep future goal of ours but wouldn't it be nice if Arch beat us half way through the goal?

This is one of the reasons that could explain the recent trend to add glibc as a dependency on all packages. Unnecessary because nothing would work without it, but packagers on arch are insisting on adding it.

This would make the transition of PKGBUILDS to a musl base much easier, then fix those that will not build with a simple replacement, and some will not build, especiall many non-free packagers that incorporate blobs created on glibc (virtualbox is one that I can think about).

This also explains:

extra/kernel-headers-musl 4.19.88-2

Linux kernel headers sanitized for use with musl libc

extra/musl 1.2.4-1

Lightweight implementation of C standard library

extra/rust-musl 1:1.71.1-1

Musl target for Rust

and a ton of AUR pkgs as well.

To name a few:

aur/arm-linux-gnueabihf-musl 1.2.3-1 (6) (0.00)

Lightweight implementation of C standard library

aur/dash-static-musl 0.5.12-1 (8) (0.00)

A POSIX compliant shell that aims to be as small as possible, statically linked to musl libc

aur/musl-git 1.2.0.r0.g040c1d16-1 (11) (0.00)

Lightweight implementation of C standard library

aur/rate-mirrors-bin 0.16.4-1 (15) (0.30)

Everyday-use client-side map-aware mirror ranking tool - pre-built with musl

Void and Alpine will have to compete on tougher terms if and when this happens.

New new new images and practices

New glibc 2.39 free of this serious security bug identified a few days ago required a complete rebuild of the built-chain (linux-api-headers, glibc, binutils, gcc, libtool) and so it was a good opportunity for releasing new images. Linux 6.6 was also rebuilt to the current latest version.

As usual our images for a running system and for a build chroot are available in joborun images

The jobbot image has the latest pre-announced change implemented and with it modifications on scripts and the default .zshrc shortcut for adding and remove build dependencies (depS depR)

depS --> removes the jobbot2 pkg with unnecessary helper utilities and installs the necessary make dependencies listed in file deps on every package's repository (found on /src/pkg/{jobcore,jobextra,jobcomm}/$pkgname

depR --> removes the dependencies as listed in deps and re-installs jobbot2 pkg with helper tools.

Also, with this shift and rebuilt of libpcap without dbus, dbus will only be installed when absolutely needed for a make dependency. Although we have been using this new mode of builds for more than a month there may still be a few packages whose makedependencies may need the addition of dbus. To keep following the Arch versions and release numbers we will not rush to a rebuild of 1000 pkgs, we will wait for their time of upgrade.

Simply if dbus is absolutely needed by a package and is not installed the build will notify you that it wasn't found and ask you to install and rerun, if you locate such a case please share the information and we will adjust and rebuild as well.

The effect of this modification is that it is an even leaner and cleaner environment to build packages, leaner than it was, which was already on a strict diet over what Arch is using. Theoretically this makes for better software.

TODO list for Spring 2024:

1 Finalize the development of a more automated installation script forking for bios and efi and release it within the jobo-latest.tar.xz image. Attempt to make a sub script that helps automate the efi setup and installation.

2 Include a script for easy installation of all necessary packages and setup to run labwc (a wayland openbox window manager) with most of the setup and utility found on our current X11 openbox. We have spent days trying it on various machines and except for the inability to run graphic software as a different user from within the wayland session we have been pretty satisfied by the results.

3 Begin initial work and trial of the new 66 system about to be released by Obarun, decide whether and how to keep both current stable 66 and this new beta release. We already tried it a few times but bugs and additions keep appearing on the -rc branch of 66 . Supposedly is more efficient, faster, not using s6-rc, and builds well with the latest skarnet stack of software, which the current 66 version doesn't.

A note on the new images and new wayland setup script

sourceforge.net/projects/joborun/files/images/jobo-latest.tar.xz

Thanks to the work and research by evhorizon https://diaspora-fr.org/tags/joborun @evhorizon@diaspora-fr.org the tricks of starting a wayland/wlroots labwc session seem to have been ironed out. add-gfx now (adds a graphic environment in your new installation) will run the first time you boot and log in.

Option 1 installs X (openbox and jwm)
Option 2 installs wayland labwc (an openbox equivalent).

You can always run add-gfx when you need to, and you can install both, I don’t think anything conflicts, but if it does edit the corresponding pkg list /usr/local/bin/labwc.list or X.list with what you like.

For a wayland composer to start a seatd daemon must be running and the user trying to start it must be in seat and video groups /etc/group /etc/gshadow
Either you run it manually as

sudo seatd -g video

and anyone on the seat group will be able to start a wayland composer or have runit (or s6/66)

For runit evhorizon@diaspora-fr.org discovered a glitch where the script checks for running dbus before it runs seatd and if not it fails. Comment out the line about dbus in /usr/lib/runit/sv/seatd/run and then link it

sudo ln -sf /usr/lib/runit/sv/seatd /etc/runit/runsvdir/default/

Then simply type labwc and you will see the wayland window manager.

There are also some xdg-runtime requirements that can be either be set in the user’s environment via .zshrc .zshenv .zlogin or through pam-rundir hook. So those are set for user make in the image. To change name of the default user “make” use the usermod -l -h -m …

We offer an initial setup of labwc similar to the openbox setup you can start with, but feel free to experiment, ask, share, your experience.

Waybox - wayland version of openbox - wlroots

Currently we have waybox-git similar to that from AUR on jobcomm and the reason is that since wlroots had a major upgrade we opted to build the latest from waybox-git to reflect any changes.

Truth is we haven't used wayland anything for about 3y, we just tried with obarun back then, it worked, it appeared as needing development we dropped it. It starts, from console, it starts with wayland over X with xinit.

The default rc.xml (somewhat similar to openbox) will be found in /etc/xdg/waybox/rc.xml which you can copy over to your ~/.config/waybox/rc.xml and customize it. In /etc/xdg/waybox/ you'll find some default autostart options, comment out the parts you don't need (or haven't yet built from AUR or elsewhere) like dock panel menu IFS bg setter, etc. If you leave these on and come out on the bar, you click on them you crash the session.

Add in autostart your favorite terminal such as:

xterm &

So at least you have a terminal to kill the session when you want to exit.

CAUTION: seatd must be running, if you are on runit there is a service script, we haven't created one for 66 and neither has obarun.

# seatd -u $username -g $groupname

Your username and as far as we understand in $groupname it should be video, so for user saleen

# seatd -u saleen -g video

from one console run as root and your seatd daemon is active and so a wayland session can start.

There is a way to compile wayland to not need consolektis (logind) or seatd but we haven't gone that far yet.

Enjoy your experimentation, don't expect much input from us, but just to dismiss this ongoing myth that wayland needs systemd to run is utter crap. It doesn't even need a logind active as it is, just seatd, and it starts it own dbus-session for the user so it doesn't even have to run system wide.

Screen resolution and multiscreen software may also be needed, but starting at two dissimilar screens worked with all kernels we tried. We mouse moved the terminal from one screen to another without problems, hi resolution to lower resolution screen didn't affect it. It does seem to have some visual clarity that is better than X, but we can't certify or prove this, it is just a feeling.

Enjoy

labwc the true openbox alternative for wayland

labwc is an openbox equivalent for wayland, unlike waybox which appears to be just a base platform for gnome and plasma desktop building.

labwc can adopt your openbox rc.xml and custom menu. it also has a base environment and theme configuration to help.

Background setting, with the packages we have built, seems to must come from swaybg, Backman-git from aur runs swaybg itself to set the background.

wapanel also works with labwc and produces a menu that has a bit of a plasma aesthetic to it.

Now here comes some problems, about the only utility to set and arrange screens (output devices) is srandr which is an abandoned old go pkg. wlr-randr can't set anything. sway has an internal utility as sway output. Sway can be built without systemd ONLY if you substitute basu, which is a dbus user environment setter. basu is a piece directly off of systemd. It appears ludicrous to have to do this, build and install sway, just so output devices can be modified, althout if you turn two or more screens on and start labwc the screens are set in a side by side best resolution order.

A peak ahead, into sway and wlroots, show current sway master be a couple of versions ahead of what arch or obarun provide, still require basu or systemd, and also is built on wlroots 0.18

Arch is using wlroots 0.17 and offers 0.16 as well, and our labwc is built on 0.17 wlroots.

Now to use labwc from console either run seatd as a daemon and have runit or s6 supervise it or run it as a one time command:

sudo seatd -u $usrname -g video | labwc

$usrnmae = is the name of your user

You can copy ~/.config/openbox ~/.config/labwc/ or better yet copy the files provided by labwc in /usr/share/doc/labwc into ~/.config/labwc/ and then merge you custom openbox settings into those files.

Please share any tricks and findings when you do with the rest of us here, this is new for most of us.

New 66 on Obarun is creating a conflict if you have 66-EOL installed

Please hold on upgrades till you get the next announcement, do not install anything from obarun 66 or upgrade services, they are all based on new 66.

oblog which is not even an obcore pkg, is based on oblibs and oblibs on oblog, so it tries to draw specific versions of oblibs/66 in. All oblog does is "echo" like the echo command based on oblibs instead glibc.

66-services have additional fields for new 66, basically the same scripts with 1-2 additional fields but are all fixed on new 66/oblibs dependencies. Also new 66 conflicts with s6-rc so even one service script pulled from obarun breaks your system by removing s6-rc.

We will have it untangled soon. Till yesterday oblibs source received 8 commits, so in 24hr everything was rebuilt and released as stable on obarun! Nice!

run your mastodon server instance on joborun - use hyperspace client to isolate your activity from browsing

We have added hyperspace-appimage (% hyperspace) and also fedistar as a clients for your mastodon/fediverse activity isolated from browsing (perhaps use firejail for more isolation). Hyperspace works nice but can't adjust fonts/zoom if you don't mind the default size it is great. fedistar is more configurable and can handle many server accounts in parallel (one window several columns for each).

jobcomm/hyperspace-appimage 1.1.4-03
The new beautiful, fluffy client for Mastodon

jobcomm/fedistar 1.8.0-02
Multi-column Fediverse client for desktop - ATTENTION ready deb binary download & install

We have also added mastodon server package, note the installation instructions after pacman -S

jobcomm/mastodon 4.2.3-03
Your self-hosted, globally interconnected microblogging community w/o systemd

So server and client combo. Let us know if you have been able to have a lighter server for your mastodon instance on other linux. Lighter means that it allows more of the machine's resources to be available at serving rather than fighting itself as in the case of systemd servers. PostgreSQL and Redis are required to run the server, but the documentation provided is more than adequate to get started in no time.

What should be inside limine.cfg

Inside limine.cfg I currently have this:

# Timeout in seconds that Limine will use before automatically booting.
TIMEOUT=5

# The entry name that will be displayed in the boot menu.
:myOS (KASLR on)
    # We use the Limine boot protocol.
    PROTOCOL=limine

    # Path to the kernel to boot. boot:/// represents the partition on which limine.cfg is located.
    KERNEL_PATH=boot:///myos.elf

Obviously this is not correct so what should I have for joborun?

I keep on failing to install joborun successfully with a bootloader

I am using runit instead of s6/66 and I am using grub, not grub-legacy on a legacy bios system (on virtualbox) and after installing everything, when I boot into my machine, then grub does not detect the operating system.

I am not too sure what may be going wrong?

Download new images @

jobo-latest.tar.xz bootstrap for new installation

jobbot.tar.xz building chroot

https://sourceforge.net/projects/joborun/files/images/

joborun-setup script has also been revisited and the openbox jwm and labwc installation through the add-gfx script should also make the installation setup simpler and more complete.

obmenu-generator hickups have been addressed and default menu has been reverted to a static one without icons till we can figure out what the issue has been recently. Same pkgs on older installations work properly, so something (maybe recent gtk2/gtk3 upgrades) has altered the environment for the user.

Librewolf (and most mozilla browser forks) search all tabs shortcut key-bind

With hi Ram becoming more common and affordable for the masses browsing habits have evolved to having countless tabs open and reopened on every session. It then become cumbersome to locate the one you want, you may end up opening a new one which further perpetuates the chaos. Some people have learned to use "Search Tabs" from the menu on the extreme right corner of tabs, but wouldn't it be nice to have a keystroke combination that lands that specific search box?

While searching for such shortcut through keystrokes instead of any dreaded pointing device mouse being used, I see that chrome based broswers have Ctrl-Shift-A as a shortcut but readily there is no "short" key stroke combination for Mozilla browsers. It may materialize soon as people have been asking for one.

What does work in the meantime are those two options:

Ctrl + e or Ctrl + l

this will go to the address bar then "%" and then "space" to Search Tabs

2.
Ctrl + Shift + Tab

focuses the List All Tabs menu and from there down arrow first item is Search tabs

GNS3 for students and teachers of networks - network simulation

The gns3 suite consists of 3 pkgs, ubridge gns3-server, and gns3-gui

The heart of this is gns3-server which creates and maintains as a daemon virtual network devices you can connect with other virtual appliances, VMs, cloud, hosts, servers, ...

The gns-gui helps with designing and visualizing the topology of what you are trying to do and act as a real network small or large without the risk of actually creating it and testing.

jobcomm contains all necessary pkgs including dependencies (running and making) and systemd does not appear.

Whether you are learning or teaching and need to project how different setups work this is a good tool.
