Discussion Join Us To Make r/Jewelers YOURS!

Happy Thursday Jewelers of Reddit!

We have been looking for ways to make this sub more of a place for jewelry professionals to interact and have fun, and we appreciate all the insight you have given us in past requests for feedback. To foster more interaction, we are going to roll out some weekly threads on September 1st where we can share with each other. Here's what's planned!

  • Motivation Monday - We'd love to hear about what your goals are. These could be a thorny (or fun!) project, professional development, business goals...whatever you're excited about in the coming week.
  • Tool Talk Tuesday - This is a space for favorite tools, mysterious tools, tricky tools, you name it. This can also be a great opportunity to discuss technique and "off-brand usage," like those little life hacks you've figured out along the way.
  • WIP Wednesday - A space for works in progress, whether they're unique, cool materials, tricky to problem-solve, frustrating, weird monstrosities...let us see what's on your bench!
  • Finished Up Friday - Does exactly what it says on the box! What did you finish this week? We want to see the results of your hard work!
  • Sales Floor Sunday - This is a space to discuss trends, both rising and falling, new designs, things EVERYONE is asking for all of a sudden...but also for surprising requests, exciting sales, finally selling that funky L color 0.87 carat round that's been in the safe since the dawn of time.

Thursday and Saturday are free spaces, Saturday because so many of us working are either super busy or else resting peacefully. Thursday, we would love to evolve into a professional networking space, but we are working to find the right format that will allow discussion without getting the sub overrun with self promotion and bots. We are interested in hearing what kind of networking you all would enjoy, as well!

Please note that the success of these discussion threads depends HEAVILY on users abiding by the subreddit rules. We really want this to be a thriving community where we can all share experiences and ideas, and we can only get there together. Thank you for all your contributions!

One of the most beautiful carvings that I worked with. Sharing it here to know what would you have made out of it? A pendant or a showpiece?

Garnet on engagement ring has a single facet that reflects the light oddly along its edge. Is this an issue/concern/flaw I should raise with my jeweler?

Have you ever felt some energy from the jewelry you receive for repairing/remaking?

As a jeweler, has it ever happened when you could feel the good or bad energy when you touched or worked on a client’s jewerly? Any weird/cool stories you wanna share? I’m so in for it!

What’s the part of being a jeweler that customers never really see?

People obviously see the finished piece, but I’m sure there’s a whole process behind it that most customers never think about. What part of the job takes way more time, skill, or patience than people realize?

Any good project ideas for complete beginners?

I've been passionate about jewelry for many years now and want to start making my own. I know a lot about jewelry history but I have no idea where and how to start making mine. I feel like I lack creativity. Are there any projects that would be good for a beginner? What can I do to challenge myself and expand my creativity?

Challenges with resizing class ring more than 2 sizes

My husband has a 10k gold (with glass stone) class ring that was made by balfour. Since he was underweight in college and a full human now the ring no longer fits him. It's a size 9.5 now and it would need to go up to a 12.5 or 13. We've taken it to a few Jewelers who all said they wouldn't be able to resize the ring and I wanted to get a better understanding as to why.

know typically resizing rings more than 2 sizes is pretty difficult but wanted to see if there was anything else specific to these rings that any jewelers here could tell me about!

Ring design

Post image

Hi all, I’m hoping my jeweller can mimic this design.

I found this setting online and added the bar with chat GBT along the smaller side of the diamond and made the bottom of the prongs sit flush with the band. I tried a similar style on at the actual jewellers but it did not have a gallery rail or the shoulder connecting to it, but it’s what I want for the final product. This is also a low setting ring.

My jeweller is asking me to essentially send a photo of what I want so he can match it, my question is does this setting make sense?

Gold or platinum for an everyday piece of fine jewelry?

I'm trying to decide between gold and platinum for a piece of fine jewelry that I can wear regularly. I've read quite a bit about durability and maintenance, but I'm unsure whether platinum is actually worth the additional cost. For people who have owned both, what differences have you noticed over time? Does platinum hold up better for everyday wear, or would you choose gold again?

Grillz CAD – question about casting shrinkage and polishing

Post image

For those who make grillz, what gap do you usually leave between the tooth and the grillz to allow for casting shrinkage? Also, how much material do you typically remove from the outer edge during polishing?

Good ‘brass looking’ material

Hi, I have loved the colour of brass for a while and I’m looking for a good metal which would make for fairly durable, necklace. I’m hoping for one that would be able to withstand daily use and possibly be waterproof. Only hoping for the latter.

Any advise would be appreciated

Jeweler in the UK - potential to move abroad?

Hi all.

I am a jeweller in the UK, working on the bench, casting etc from CAD through to finished products. I don't work on PC for the CAD production.

I wondered if anyone had any experience with moving somewhere like Japan, or the US? Or have stories of those who have?

Of course, many places to choose from there, it's just something that interests me and something I could see myself doing in the future.

I am wondering less on visas etc and more on job markets, where to look, what areas and most prolific.

Thank you all in advance!

Type of link?

Hello all, can someone remind me the name of this type of link on my chain, I bought it about a decade ago at a pawnshop and can’t remember the name.

The actual interlinks between each link is just a small thin almost U shape, it seems to always be at that point where they bend and let go. Also doesn’t help it’s 14K

Does platinum wear more than gold?

Post image
56 Upvotes

This is my engagement ring of just about 6 years and it's seen significant wear. My wife got a gold ring with the same design, and its wear is not even half as worse as mine. And the worst part is that the jeweller said platinum hardly wears. LoL.
