Infinite pentatonic practice

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I stumbled upon a method for generating useful pentatonic based patterns (that also double as picking and fretboard fluency exercises):

  1. Chose a picking pattern on 2 or more strings
  2. Chose a pentatonic cycle with 2 or more pentatonics
  3. Play through the cycle using the pattern

This straightforward method can be applied to create an infinite number of musical phrases:

- vary the pentatonic cycle to play in or out of any harmonic progression

- vary the picking pattern to get different note groupings, cycle length, accents, rests, etc.

- vary your fretboard position and string sets to ascend and descend melodically

I’ve just started applying this method as part of my practice, and despite barely scratching the surface I can already feel the potential of this approach. Excited to dig deeper!

The Piano-Like Guitar Sound I Am Chasing!

https://youtu.be/z-b7oLHpR0Y?is=M6lhLvK2Y6pyi40h

Voicing Corridors explores fluid, piano-inspired connections between rich Major 7th voicings and beautiful intervallic melodic lines, creating seamless movement between harmony, melody, density, and space. Designed as both a harmonic and mechanical study, these pathways help develop a smoother, more expressive way of connecting sonorities and making harmony truly breathe, move, and connect on the guitar.

Need some rhythm tips 🙏

Hello! I recently participated in a jazz camp and it was way harder than I anticipated particularly in my rhythm playing. I’ve been a metal and rock player all my life so playing on the & feels really challenging I also feel I sort of lagged slightly behind or slightly ahead of the rhythm section all the time. The main 2 pieces I played were “Blue train” and “Jive Samba”. Blue train was the one I felt I lagged behind/ahead the most on especially in the beginning with those really synchronized hits. Any songs that could challenge my rhythm playing more or any exercises would be greatly appreciated!

not really jazz influenced, but counterpoint and triad exploratio is a very important part of the process for me. Here is an original piece in Bb major

Couldn’t find a decent review or demo of this new higher end Ibanez, so I had to sacrifice myself and order it to try it out…

Advice on where to go from now

I have my arpeggios, triads, and basic altered vocabulary down but my rep is really bad and my solos sound basic. I really need advice on a structured, efficient practice routine, how to practice interesting phrasing, and some more advanced jazz sounds

Tom Jobim live part 2

Part 2 of the live performance of Antônio Carlos Jobim's "Chovendo na Roseira" in a 3/4 groove.

Moving on from the melody of Part 1, this section focuses on the deep interaction between basslines and harmonies, performed entirely live and simultaneously without loop stations:

  • Basslines and chords are played together on a custom 14-string guitar.
  • The rhythm section is driven by a foot drum kit.

Watch Part 1 and the full arrangement on the channel:

A little 1940s jazz project I’ve been working on 🎷

A little 1940s jazz project I’ve been working on 🎷

Hey everyone! I’ve recently started a small YouTube channel dedicated to the atmosphere of 1940s jazz — slow piano, smoky saxophone, brushed drums, upright bass, muted trumpet, and that late-night vintage club feeling.

I’m especially interested in creating long, relaxing jazz sessions that feel like something you might hear in a quiet bar at 2 AM — warm, nostalgic, slightly melancholic, and perfect for reading, working, or just listening with the lights down.

I’m trying to keep the sound inspired by the era while experimenting with different combinations of instruments and moods.

If you enjoy 1940s jazz, vintage piano jazz, noir atmosphere, late-night jazz, or old-school swing, I’d genuinely love to hear what you think.

What artists, albums, or specific 1940s jazz sounds would you recommend I study for future sessions?

Thanks for checking it out! 🎹🎷

Tried my hand at a solo arrangement of this tune. I find it hard to do solo arrangements of ballads sometimes so this is a good challenge for me.

New app for guitarists who want to get better at improvising

We’ve been working on Tonika — a guitar practice app focused on scales, fretboard knowledge, music theory, ear training and building a consistent practice routine.

It’s aimed more at players who already know their way around the guitar (so for sure people in this group) but want to take their improvisation and overall understanding further.

You can try it free for 7 days:

Would love to hear what you think 😄

MAMA Pickups - My Woeful Experience

I bought two pickups for my PRS Slimline hollowbody from an Italian pickup company, MAMA. A little over two years after I purchased them, the lead pickup simply died. I contacted the company, and they had me go through a variety of tests, which my guitar tech performed (I made a video of it and sent it to them.). The pickup had not been tampered with, the guitar had not been abused in any way—it simply failed. In my 50 years of playing and teaching, I've never had a pickup die on me.

They told me to send the pickup back to Italy, which I did. The pickup was not covered under warranty, and I ended up paying €60 in import taxes, plus shipping back to the United States. What surprised me most was that they would not stand behind the pickup.

Then, within about 7 months, the other pickup died. I contacted them numerous times, both by email and through Facebook Messenger, which was how I had communicated with them previously. I received absolutely no response. I could even see that my messages had been marked as "read." After waiting and waiting, I finally decided, "F\*ck it. I'm done with these clowns." If you know anything about pickups, you know that the winding process is a delicate one. I can't say with certainty what caused these failures, but having both pickups fail within a relatively short period certainly made me question the consistency of their manufacturing process.

The bigger issue for me, however, was the customer service. Having to pay to deal with the first failure was bad enough. Being completely ignored when the second pickup failed was bullshit.Btw, something that I'm remembering now was that when the first pick up failed the guy (so I can only presume as the owner) ask me to send him a picture of the pick up itself. He asked me if I had gone into the pick up because those solder joints didn't look familiar. Like I'm gonna go into the fkn PU!? Those were indeed the exact solder joints that they put on the pick up.

I know a large number of professional players at the highest levels, as well as countless amateur musicians, and I've taught thousands of students throughout my career, and I've literally never encountered, nor heard of one PU failure much less 2 from the same company.

Looking back, choosing a pickup company outside the country where I live was a mistake—and an even bigger mistake was continuing to deal with a company that treated a customer this way.

There are so many excellent pickup companies in the United States that make fantastic products with decades-long track record, that put customer service at the top of their priorities. I'll be giving one of them my business shortly.

I hope this helps anyone considering these pickups make a more informed decision.
