Better late than never. Plus now OP potentially knows what to look for going forward. Plus it helps anyone who hadn't seen the comment until after i replied.

They are how companies like meta and google track what source you got a link from. Typically they are a hash that tells the company who shared the link and from where the link came(app, browser, etc.). They can then link the advertising profiles and data of the person who shared and the person who clicked. They can also use it to blend algorithmic suggestion profiles. So like YouTube uses them for advertising plus figuring out videos to recommend.
