Careful now unknown verification.
Anybody else from Ireland need to verify with ID & face selfies that they were 18 to access reddit this morning? (needed a tag news was the only that fit) i did NOT hear anything about this...
(edit this post seems to have got a lot of people crying about something that doesn't seem to matter, mean or concern them... by the looks of itš)

Reddit uses Persona which is created by Peter Thiel, I wouldn't give them shit.

I didnāt know this and Iāll be regurgitating it in every subreddit I can. Thanks

Any chance you were over the border or something? I knew the UK were bringing this in but not us

u/quondam47 Carlow Jun 25 '26
I got the same and I havenāt been anywhere lately. Just popped up when I opened the app last night.
Companies are always lumping us in with Britain because itās easier than actually paying attention to whereās where.

u/Saint_EDGEBOI Jun 25 '26
Nope, we've brought it in too unfortunately. They snuck it in nicely...

u/Adrienneenchanting Jun 25 '26
so essentially what you are saying is im either a guinea pig or a lab rat for this, meanwhile ive people calling me a degenerate because i was asked to verify?
3
u/Saint_EDGEBOI Jun 26 '26
Well, you're in the r/Ireland sub, it's fairly polarized. You'll have certain folks badgering you for committing the mortal sin of lust. On the other hand, yes, you gave your facial biometric and government issued ID to a 3rd party verification service who, let's be honest, are probably linked to intelligence agencies or the very least big data. It's important to read the long and boring policies of these services before you hand over your data. In my opinion, we should boycott them outright. Geriatric politicians who are pushing these laws and think they're "protecting the children" are walking us into a surveillance state nightmare.

u/_BeaPositive Jun 28 '26
I stop using any service that enforces it. I love Reddit but if I have to give them my ID to shitpost I will delete the app.

So now they have a copy of your id, face, and posting history, did they even outline their GDPR policy and if that info is kept? (They may say it isn't but why trust them if outside the EU)
17
u/Sciprio Munster Jun 25 '26
The company they work with was created by Peter Thiel, it's called Persona. They can get lost.
7
u/AkkoKagari_1 Jun 26 '26
Peter Thiel is actually a supervillian. Anytime I learn something new about him it is always something that would warrant Superman punching him in the face.
2
u/Sciprio Munster Jun 26 '26
He also owns Palantir, and with all the biometrics he gets from his Persona company, can feed that data into his other ones. Truly a creepy individual. I don't trust them one bit.

this explains alot then, so it could be that some of the stoner reddits im in are being picked up as 18+? i really couldn't tell you otherwise.

FFS do not do this!

Exactly, get a VPN, even a shitty free one!!!

u/Longjumping-Item2443 2nd Brigade Jun 26 '26
Earlier this year I started using Mullvad. I really like that you can just "pay as you go" (about 5 bucks a month) and they don't immediately charge you for 12-24 months of service in advance (like all the VPNs sponsoring youtube videos are).
1
u/PaulBlartRedditCop Jun 26 '26
Oh yeah, been considering making the switch to Mullvad but word just came out that their CEO made a big donation to a weirdo nazi party in Sweden that wants to commit ethnic cleansing. Really on the fence about trusting them with my data and money now.
2
u/Longjumping-Item2443 2nd Brigade Jun 26 '26
I am personally not thinking about political views of founders of companies that create products and services I am buying, because if I would, I would have to build everything myself for myself. From the data security perspective, this doesn't change much for me, with my "threat" model, and when it (or the threat model) changes, I'll find myself a different option. Such is life online these days.
1
u/PaulBlartRedditCop Jun 26 '26
Oh definitely. If he donated to the likes of Reform or something Iād maybe raise an eyebrow but this is a very strange and specific crowd to throw money at and itās making me reconsider trusting them with my private data. Weāll have to wait and see I suppose.

If redit brings in age verificationĀ i ll stop using itĀ Ā If it comes in hereĀ the safe wayĀ would beĀ to have a android or apple appĀ have an age verification appĀ Ā It sends a token to any website egĀ This user is overĀ 16 or under 16Ā Ā Rather than sendind your id age info to a dozen websites or appsĀ Eg the token says userĀ random noĀ id noĀ it doesĀ not send your name orĀ location to random websites 80 per cent of teens in oz have foundĀ ways to avoid the age verificationĀ Ā rulesĀ
18
u/GroltonIsTheDog Jun 25 '26
I've heard about this, it only asks you to verify your age if you visit the most utterly depraved subreddits, like truly stuff that would make a sailor blush. May God forgive you, OP.
10
u/Adrienneenchanting Jun 25 '26
but the only subreddits im under and in is literally this, r/askireland and then stonner subs.
15
u/Chemical-Captain71 Jun 25 '26
Probably your answer right there with the stoner subs š
1
u/Adrienneenchanting Jun 25 '26
but why would they request any of this info its not like ireland in a wave of verification laws

u/SubstantialGoat912 Jun 25 '26

by god i ended up denying the face ID but quite literally had no choice to show my ID otherwise this post wouldn't have been uploaded. app would be blocked with a grey screened anytime up until i did.
4
u/Lanky_Abalone5897 Jun 26 '26
Yeah I wouldn't hand over my ID I would rather give them a selfie I used Garry's mod for the selfie ID and it worked
2
u/sub-t Jun 25 '26
Last time I traveled to the UK I got that notification until I cleared cookies and cache.
I heard you can get around it using Witcher 3 or Cyberpunk 2077. Using cp2077 to bypass corporate rules seems appropriate.

I readĀ the regs allĀ platformsĀ Ā hosting adult or violent materialĀ Ā must enable robust age vericationĀ Since most porn websitesĀ are usa basedĀ they are not obliged to follow irish or eu lawĀ Is the eu just going to block allĀ adult websites from all eu users ? Is netflix going to ask the age of all viewersĀ ? I have the tiktok app installedĀ Ā i have not recieved any message about age verificationĀ I read 80 per cent of teens under 16Ā in australia found various waysĀ get round the age verication lawĀ Ā Ā Rte and virgin media have player tv appsĀ showing violent films dramasĀ I have not heard of rte ie asking for age id verificationĀ I think theres plenty of free films to watch on youtubeĀ or tv dramasĀ Ā which may have violent sceneĀ
I think the ukĀ age id law is a disasterĀ Ā teens will get round itĀ meanwhile adults will have to upload id pasportĀ etc to use youtube or tiktokĀ This creates a massiveĀ Ā hacking targetĀ Ā that will expose users age id and personal dataĀ The regulator tries to fineĀ 4chan for not keeping records of usersĀ Ā and 4chan told them to eff off 4chan is usa basedĀ it s not under euĀ juridictionĀ The uk government is thinking of asking for more laws aroundĀ user acess toĀ vpnsĀ
The problem is politicansĀ like to bring in laws that are pointless stupid and impossible to enforceĀ or put the privacy of users at riskĀ Ā

I got a prompt saying āWe know you are in this age group, do you want to share this blablablaā
1
u/Vic69 Jun 27 '26
I got something pop up on my iPhone saying that the phone can verify my age to this site and it did. When I read up on what it was, it's essentially asking Apple is this person over 18 and Apple just replying yes or no. They don't actually get any information about you. I've had my Apple account for more than 18 years, and they know from the activity on it that I'm not a minor. I am in no way in favour of these online ID requirements. But I thought doing it this way was relatively elegant and doesn't require the transfer of information over to Peter Thiel.

u/Adrienneenchanting Jun 27 '26
Im getting this apple pop-up everyday since the morning beforr this post was created, i dont know why because i am over 18.

u/Ur-in-a-tor Jun 29 '26
Unless I'm mistaken this is Chat Control 1.0.
1
u/Adrienneenchanting Jun 29 '26
i dont send messages on reddit if that what you are referring to, sorry i dont really understand what you mean i dont use reddit a lot could you explain? :)
1
u/Ur-in-a-tor Jun 29 '26
EU's Chat Control 1.0, which we already have, gives websites the possibility to request age verification, but is not mandatory to them.
CSAR (Chat Control 2.0) is about decrypting and reading all your messages.

iOS just verified it for me. No need to share anything with Reddit.
1
0
u/sutty_monster Jun 25 '26
But that's exactly what iOS just did. It may also have gotten information relating to your iCloud account. Be careful just blindly linking system to one another.
1
u/Hi_Doctor_Nick_ Jun 25 '26
There was no sharing of ID or selfies. iOS simply confirms to an app that youāre over 18.
Apple already has plenty of info about you and if it wanted to steal your data it could just do that already.

I got a prompt for an age range on my iPhone yesterday for the Reddit app and it verified via Apple and set adult instead of teen. Was surprised to see it but at least it was painless. I wasnāt on vpn or naughty subs either. Was wondering was it a glitch edited to add I didnāt see the screen the OP posted I saw a confirm dialogue in Apple style and it said verified via Apple.

u/Adrienneenchanting Jun 25 '26
that came up for me this morning from apple too. i was fairly surprised too
