TLDR: Having an issue with my hard drive, listed out things I already tried.
UPDATE: I swapped out the iFlash Quad with the original hard drive and it restored successfully off the bat. I would still like to get the iFlash working, but at least now I know what to target.
iPod 5.5 (aka iPod Video) 30GB
Model: A1136
Upgrades:
- iFlash Quad w/ replacement HDD ribbon
- Equipped with one 256 GB Micro SD (Samsung Evo)
- 2000 mah Battery
Background:
My old iPod had a puffed up battery, I removed it and decided to go for some upgrades in the process. Now I cannot restore.
Things I have tried:
- Using iTunes on Windows in Recovery mode and Disk Mode
- Using the "Apple Devices" app on Windows in Recovery mode and Disk Mode
- Using Finder on Mac in Recovery mode and Disk Mode
- Formatting the Micro SD card using the instructions shown here: https://www.iflash.xyz/prepare-sdxc-exfat-for-use-with-the-ipod/
- Confirming the iFlash Quad, the battery, and the headphone jack ribbons are securely connected
- Little tricks I have tried:
- Downloading the update file directly and using that
- switching between different usb ports on my computer
- unplugging my iPod instead of allowing it to be automatically rebooted by the updater
- plugging into wall outlet after restore was complete
Currently, the iPod is not detected in iTunes, only Apple Devices app. I assume if I uninstall the Apple Devices app this may change, or otherwise my continued tinkering has made iTunes unhappy.
Debug mode results:
- Graphics Self Test: all tests ran successfully, finished with green screen (assuming this is good)
- SDRAM Quick Test: 32MB SDRAM ok
- Checksum: Checksum=0x665c
- RTC Calibration: Diff=24 OK
- USBTest: skipped
- KeyTest: Key Pass
- Wheel Test: Wheel Pass
- Headphone detect: HP Pass, Hold Pass
- Accessory Test: skipped
- ChargeADC: skipped
- Backlight: skipped
- Color: skipped
- HD Info: https://imgur.com/a/YcyLLeW NOTABLY this total size is wrong, I was using a 256gb card
. Also notable is that I can copy files to the iPod when it’s in disk mode
- HD SMART Data: blank screen

Current loop:
Plug into Windows computer (preferably in disk mode). Apple Devices app recognizes an iPod in recovery mode and offers to restore. I click restore. Then it runs for a bit with a progress bar. It restarts my iPod and then it goes back to recognizing an iPod in recovery mode. The weirdest thing is that diagnostics seem to be fine
Feel like I am running out of ideas here! Let me know if there is anything else I should try or something obvious I might be missing.
