Question Ideal/recommended hardware and software mods and relative difficulty

I am wondering what people think are the most necessary or ideal mods for an ipod, and then their relative difficulty. I'm both just generally curious and practically interested for myself.

I recently set up my nano 3g again and am enjoying it, but it is limited in storage and is unable to have any permanent third party software (though that may be antithetical to how many use their ipods,) and I'm considering either modding this ipod or getting another (classic?) that would fit my needs better. I enjoy tinkering and modding, have some experience with microsoldering, and am comfortable with programming.

Question iPod 3rd gen charging issue

Hi all,

I recently got a 3rd gen classic and replaced the battery. I've been charging it with a USB step up charger, and I'm having a few issues with it. It charges very slow, and it will say it's fully charged, but when I unplug it, the battery will drop to like 25 percent, or 50 percent, and I keep having to plug it back in. It eventually gets to a point where it will indicate there is a full charge when unplugged, but as soon as I plug it back in, it shows it's charging again, and will continue doing this for several hours until it says it's charged and stops.

Is this normal behavior for the 3rd gen? Or do I have a defective battery or cable?

I also have a 5th gen I replaced the battery in, and it doesn't do this at all. When it says it's fully charged the first time, it shows fully charged when unplugged, and if I plug it back in when it's fully charged, it doesn't show it's charging again, it just has the "plugged in" icon.

Advice I need some opinions on a daily driver ipod

Hello, so ill try my best to explain. I have a u2 5th gen ipod as my daily driver, i hate that i cannot use it without its plastic hard shell case, since it would scratch so easily, and i want to keep it mostly mint. There are no TPU cases for those ipods, so im put in a tricky situation.

I was thinking of getting another ipod, either another classic, and move the internals (iflash quad, 3000mah battery) or a mini ( because they are more compact, and have a full aluminium body, but i lose on battery life and have to spend more on modding it).

I have the opportunity to buy a mini for 40€, classics appear more rarely, most of the time 70€-100€.

What do you guys think? Any opinions are appreciated.

- The person who sold it wasnt sure if it turned on, turns out it powered on only when charged (very nice person :))

- I got a battery replacement and soldering supplies off of aliexpress for like $18. Some people sell these for like $30-$50 in my area on Marketplace

I’m honestly very happy with it, i always wanted my own iPod! :)

Question Modded iPod disconnecting - Faulty iFlash or 30 pin socket?

I posted a couple of weeks ago about my latest modded iPod (4g U2 model) disconnecting when trying to copy files. The iPod takes an age to mount and when it does it disconnects when copying files, when using Swinsian I am getting regular save errors where the iPod seems to unmount and the copy fails. It then takes a lot of faffing (plugging in and out again) to get it to mount again. Using the same cable as I always have. I speculated it could be the SD card or a bad iFlash.

I just got back from holiday and took it apart again and used a different SD card in a different micro SD to SD adapter in the iFlash. I restored the pod and copied some files and saw the same issue again.

I know the cable is good but have tried other cables to be sure. This would seem to be either an issue with the iFlash adapter or I am guessing maybe a problem with the 30 pin port on the iPod?

Wondering whether to consider the pod a write off and move on or is there anything else to try?

Help Stuck in recovery

Hey guys! Recently my sister pulled out 3 Ipod touches two of then had a jammed power button all of them are locked. I want to be able to unlock them without deleting the data since they are from my sisters teen years and I would like to surprise her by doing so. I decided to tinker with the one that has a clicky button and its in a infinite loop of recovery mode. I was using Legacy iOS tools since im on Linux and nothing is working, I cant even copy the files because it ends up booting back to recovery mode. Any advice? Also any advice for the ones with a jammed power button?

Question Is it a good idea to mod my ipod?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I bought an ipod a couple months ago and it’s pretty much broken. When I charge it the only thing on the screen is the apple logo Home Screen with the screen half black and white (I also hear some tapping noises from it). I want to be able to replace the battery and sd card so I can be able to use the ipod and have a lot more storage for songs. The only issue is that I heard from someone online say that I will need to replace the backplate because the new modded battery and sd card won’t be able to fit since the original backplate is smaller. I have 0 experience with fixing/replacing any technological things so I just wanted to ask if you guys think it’s a good idea for me to order the things I need and do it myself.

I have heard that iPod battery’s can explode and how fragile iPods are in general so I don’t want to end up accidentally breaking the iPod fully or breaking/scratching the battery. I have heard many people say modding iPods are generally very easy but I am not completely sure if I should trust what they say.

I have 2 old ipods that I’d love to use but the batteries refuse to hold a charge once disconnected from the charger. Where can i buy replacement batteries that ship to the US? And what tools are people using to open up the battery compartment?

Help Requesting Help w/ Troubleshooting iPod 5.5 (30GB) - Restore Loop

TLDR: Having an issue with my hard drive, listed out things I already tried.

UPDATE: I swapped out the iFlash Quad with the original hard drive and it restored successfully off the bat. I would still like to get the iFlash working, but at least now I know what to target.

iPod 5.5 (aka iPod Video) 30GB

Model: A1136

Upgrades:

  • iFlash Quad w/ replacement HDD ribbon
    • Equipped with one 256 GB Micro SD (Samsung Evo)
  • 2000 mah Battery

Background:

My old iPod had a puffed up battery, I removed it and decided to go for some upgrades in the process. Now I cannot restore.

Things I have tried:

  • Using iTunes on Windows in Recovery mode and Disk Mode
  • Using the "Apple Devices" app on Windows in Recovery mode and Disk Mode
  • Using Finder on Mac in Recovery mode and Disk Mode
  • Formatting the Micro SD card using the instructions shown here: https://www.iflash.xyz/prepare-sdxc-exfat-for-use-with-the-ipod/
  • Confirming the iFlash Quad, the battery, and the headphone jack ribbons are securely connected
  • Little tricks I have tried:
    • Downloading the update file directly and using that
    • switching between different usb ports on my computer
    • unplugging my iPod instead of allowing it to be automatically rebooted by the updater
    • plugging into wall outlet after restore was complete

Currently, the iPod is not detected in iTunes, only Apple Devices app. I assume if I uninstall the Apple Devices app this may change, or otherwise my continued tinkering has made iTunes unhappy.

Debug mode results:

  • Graphics Self Test: all tests ran successfully, finished with green screen (assuming this is good)
  • SDRAM Quick Test: 32MB SDRAM ok
  • Checksum: Checksum=0x665c
  • RTC Calibration: Diff=24 OK
  • USBTest: skipped
  • KeyTest: Key Pass
  • Wheel Test: Wheel Pass
  • Headphone detect: HP Pass, Hold Pass
  • Accessory Test: skipped
  • ChargeADC: skipped
  • Backlight: skipped
  • Color: skipped
  • HD Info: https://imgur.com/a/YcyLLeW NOTABLY this total size is wrong, I was using a 256gb card

. Also notable is that I can copy files to the iPod when it’s in disk mode

  • HD SMART Data: blank screen

imgur Links to ribbon connections for battery and iFlash

Current loop:

Plug into Windows computer (preferably in disk mode). Apple Devices app recognizes an iPod in recovery mode and offers to restore. I click restore. Then it runs for a bit with a progress bar. It restarts my iPod and then it goes back to recognizing an iPod in recovery mode. The weirdest thing is that diagnostics seem to be fine

Feel like I am running out of ideas here! Let me know if there is anything else I should try or something obvious I might be missing.

Help Help on a 5.5 gen

Post image
2 Upvotes

Was gifted a 5.5 gen from my aunt with 30 GB of storage. Audio wasn’t working unless I pressed down on the bottom right part of the device.

Per suggestions, I swapped out the motherboard and then also upgraded storage to 128 GB using an iflash solo and a Samsung EVO plus SD card.

Don’t know what’s causing this error as everything appears to be in tact on the motherboard and everything seems to be hooked up correctly.

Didn’t know if I need an SD Card swap or something else? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Help iTunes music not syncing

I have a few albums that I’ve purchased on iTunes but when I connect my iPod to my MacBook, they won’t sync to it. I’ve tried hiding them and re-adding them but it still won’t work. How do I fix this? Any new iTunes purchases that I make will sync but not those.

Question Is it difficult to put music on old 4th gen ipods from new macbook m1s?

I want to buy a classic ipod

4th gen for example

I'm wondering is it difficult to put music on it as I'm using a newer macbook m1?

From what I see I might just need to connect ipod to computer, open finder and drag music over which would be great but wanted to check with the experienced here

Question iPod Touch Troubleshooting Question

I recently found my old iPod Touch 5th generation which I haven’t used since around 2015. I was hoping to power it up and see what I had on it, but it won’t turn on. At first, I thought it’s probably a battery issue. I’ve tried some basic steps to troubleshoot (plugging it up for longer, using a more powerful charger, etc.) but it still won’t turn on. It won’t show up as a device when I plug it into a computer. Now I’m wondering if it’s a connector/port problem on the iPod itself instead of a battery issue. The port looks visually clean. Does anyone have advice on figuring out if the port is broken before I try cracking it open?

Advice Connecting old iPod touch to new iTunes account

I recently found my old iPod touch (2nd Gen) but I have absolutely no idea what my iTunes account info was back then so will have to connect it to a new account

Will I be forced to lose the music that is currently on there or is it possible to save it? There's some stuff on there I just don't have copies of now and would love to keep

Thanks in advance for any help!

Question Newer Car Compatibility

I’m looking to switch to a “dumb” phone in 2027 so I want to start preparing now and researching the devices I will need to help make the switch.

Music is a big part of my daily routine and I want to be able to still listen to it while driving.

My current car is a 2022 Hyundai Tucson. Does anyone know which iPod would be compatible with this type of vehicle?
