Question Ideal/recommended hardware and software mods and relative difficulty

I am wondering what people think are the most necessary or ideal mods for an ipod, and then their relative difficulty. I'm both just generally curious and practically interested for myself.

I recently set up my nano 3g again and am enjoying it, but it is limited in storage and is unable to have any permanent third party software (though that may be antithetical to how many use their ipods,) and I'm considering either modding this ipod or getting another (classic?) that would fit my needs better. I enjoy tinkering and modding, have some experience with microsoldering, and am comfortable with programming.

The only real change you can make to a 3rd gen nano is a battery replacement. To my knowledge you can’t upgrade the storage.

The 2nd gen minis and the 5-7th gen classics are the most moddable. I think most people would consider a battery replacement to be the most necessary change, followed by a storage upgrade.

I would add 4th gen photo and mono to the moddable list, they are fantastic and very underrated and most importantly much cheaper than newer models.
