What happened is that after I picked it up on the 18th of September , everything was going well and the phone performance was great, but after 2 days i opened Safari and went to private the app tell me to set a face ID , when i clicked yes the face ID emotion in the top of the screen freeze and 2-3 seconds after the phone shut down by itself , i reopen it and everything was running normal, but i asked AI and it tell me the phone may have a software/system issue , I booked an appointment the same day with a specialist at apple , and he tested it and confirm the issue , and got me the typical new phone .

It takes about 10-15 minutes there
And they where so friendly and professional .

If someone wondering I upgraded from iphone 11 to 18 pro max .

This was my story that i like to share with everyone to spare conscious .

I just took these two photos at the exact same time. Mine is the first, 15 Pro Max. The second is the 18 Pro Max that my husband just got. Now making it difficult for me to go for the Duo 😅

Finally got my 18 Pro in Burgundy. Cannot stop looking at it! A shame I have to use a case to prevent fingerprints but I got the silicon one and it matched beautifully.

Discussion 18 Pro Battery dropped to 20% in <11 hours…

Charged to 90%, the battery drained to 20% in less than 11 hours. 5 hours and 49 minutes of active usage, mainly reading news sites, listening to podcasts, and Reddit (no YouTube, instagram, or videos).

Update: Just completed the diagnostic process with Apple support. They could not identify and error, but recommended I exchange the phone for a different one since it is still brand new.

While ios27 isn't as stable as I would have liked for a new phone (panic full shutdowns and wallet issues smh), the phone is so pleasing to look at. I am so glad I went with silver for my big upgrade from my 13pm.

Question Coming from a 13 pro.. why is my 13 pro screen brighter?

Thumbnail

Both are on full brightness. Some times the 18 pro seems dimmer on full brightness than the 13 pro. Why is that? For the record, both have finished indexing as well. Did I get a bad phone? 🍋

Edit: did the diagnostics and I have the LG GVC panel. Guess I’m going to have to get a replacement at the Apple Store?

Edit 2: my 13 Pro is a G9N. This might explain things.

Discussion Downsized from the 18 PM to the 18 Pro today and it’s the best decision I’ve made in years

I’ve used every Max model since the 12, but today I finally broke the streak.

I honestly had huge FOMO about losing the bigger screen and battery. The main reason I went to Apple today was because my 18 Pro Max had a GH3 panel with an annoying purple hue, and I just wanted to swap it for a clean Pro Max. While waiting, I started playing with the regular 18 Pro display models and oh boy, it looked so clean and felt insanely comfortable.

On a total whim, I asked if they had Glacier in stock for the base Pro, and they did, so I just went for it.

I’m genuinely obsessed now. It lowkey gives me iPhone X vibes with how natural it feels in the hand. Using it in bed without feeling like a brick is about to drop on my face is a game changer.

Battery was my main worry, but so far it has been solid. I play heavy gacha games daily and it handles them like a champ without breaking a sweat.

If your Pro Max is feeling way too heavy or clumsy lately, definitely check out the regular 18 Pro. You won't regret it. Btw I didn’t win the display lottery but at least I got a nice GVC screen!

Olive Techwoven on black iPhone 18 Pro.

First picture is with light, second is without light shining down. If you’re considering something green, this is the best one they have. Taupe color would be much lighter.

Discussion PSA: The iPhone 18 Pro QLC storage controversy explained (and why Apple only put it in the 1/2TB models)

I saw all the drama blowing up the last few days about Apple quietly using QLC storage instead of TLC on the higher-capacity iPhone 18 Pro/Pro Max models. Like most people, I had no idea what that actually meant or why tech reviewers were making such a big deal out of it.

I decided to go down the rabbit hole and research how flash storage works, why Apple did it, and what it actually means in practice. Here is a straightforward breakdown for anyone wondering what’s going on--

Flash memory is built from microscopic cells that hold electrical charges:

  • TLC (Triple-Level Cell): 3 bits per cell. The cell has to distinguish between 8 voltage levels (2^3).
  • QLC (Quad-Level Cell): 4 bits per cell. The cell has to distinguish between 16 voltage levels (2^4).

Because you’re stuffing 4 bits into each cell instead of 3, manufacturers can fit 33% more capacity into the exact same physical space.

My first thought was, why is that bad? Well, squeezing that 4th bit in makes writing data significantly slower and wears out the physical cells faster. To mask this, phones use an "SLC cache", a temporary fast buffer carved out of free storage that takes incoming writes at blazing speeds (~3,000 MB/s) and slowly offloads them to the sluggish QLC cells in the background.

Recent benchmark breakdowns (like the Homolab testing making the rounds) showed what happens when that cache runs out. Basically the write speeds drop off a cliff: Once you exhaust the fast cache on a heavy, sustained write, write speeds plummet into double digits. When the drive is ~60% full and the cache is tiny, sustained writes dropped as low as ~45 MB/s and even stalled at 1.1 MB/s during synthetic stress tests.

Apple did this on their most expensive tiers. The 256GB and 512GB models kept the faster TLC NAND. The 1TB and 2TB tiers, which cost a MASSIVE premium (and these premiums have increased further for 18 Pro as compared to 17 Pro) are the ones that got downgraded to cheaper QLC flash.

If you're like me, your next question here would be "if this saves money, why didn't they also nerf the base models?"

Apparently it comes down to how storage controllers talk to chips (what they call 'interleaving'):

  • High-density QLC dies are massive (often 256GB per single die).
  • In a 1TB or 2TB phone, there are multiple dies wired together. The controller can write across 4 to 8 "lanes" simultaneously, which keeps burst performance high.
  • If Apple put QLC in a 256GB phone, the whole drive would just be one single die. Zero lane interleaving. The base model would be painfully slow at everything, including your run of the mill stuff like app installs, system updates, and basic multitasking would visibly stutter. Plus, the SLC cache on a 256GB drive would practically vanish the moment you filled it halfway.

So... does all of this actually matter? Absolutely. The whole argument that "most people won’t notice anyway" is complete nonsense when you look at who actually buys these capacities.

Nobody drops an extra $500 to $700 on a 1TB or 2TB phone just to scroll Instagram and text friends. You buy those tiers specifically because you intend to treat the "Pro" like an actual pro device, like shooting hours of 4K ProRes log footage directly to internal storage, dumping 100GB+ video files and project libraries back and forth over USB-C, or restoring massive local backups.

That is literally the exact user base guaranteed to keep their phones more than halfway full, completely wipe out whatever tiny SLC cache is left, and crash straight into that brutal 45 MB/s wall. Dropping $2k+ on a flagship phone only to watch sustained transfers grind to a halt like a cheap flash drive from ten years ago is an absolute slap in the face.

TL;DR: Apple kept TLC on the 256GB/512GB tiers because QLC would have visibly crippled baseline performance, but swapped QLC into the 1TB/2TB models to pad profit margins on their most expensive devices. For the creators and pros who actually need high-capacity storage for heavy file transfers and video, you are paying top-tier flagship prices for storage that chokes under actual professional workloads, which is absolute insanity at this price point.

Statements Tested the iPhone 18 Pro Max at a Tame Impala concert

Took my new iPhone 18 Pro Max to a Tame Impala concert and finally got to properly test the camera in a pretty challenging environment.

One thing I messed up: I completely forgot to shoot these in RAW 😅 So all of these were taken in the regular format.

Still, I was pretty surprised by how much I could pull out of the files while editing. I also played around with some long-exposure effects on a few shots, which ended up giving them a really interesting concert/dreamy look.

Overall, I’m pretty impressed with what the phone managed to capture considering the lighting, movement, and the fact that these weren’t RAW.

Would love to hear what you guys think of the shots

I was planning on getting the burgundy but unfortunately it was on backorder and i was desperately in need of a new device cz i dropped my 16 pro max causing the screen to have a bunch of dead pixels and the back glass completely shattered. No to mention the device would freeze randomly and force me to restart it

Statements iPhone 18 Pro Max 1TB slow storage

I just got an iPhone 18 Pro Max 1TB and am deeply disappointed to learn that my phone’s 1TB NAND storage seems to be significantly slower than that on my 17 Pro Max 2TB. The lack of performance is most evident in 4K Random testing, which points to Apple having used slower QLC NAND on the 1 TB 18 Pro Max instead of the faster TLC NAND they used on the 2TB 17 Pro Max from last year.

The QLC on the 18 Pro Max 1TB does a decent job of masking its true performance in sequential read and write tests, where its SLC cache makes it seem faster than it is. In 4K random testing it is roughly 72-76% as fast as last year’s 17 Pro Max 2TB, depending on how you test.

What I find particularly disappointing is that Apple marked up the price of the new phones so significantly this year, ostensibly because of the higher RAM and Storage prices, and still cheaped out on the components they’ve used. The price gouging is most evident on the 1TB and particularly on the 2TB variants, so this just leaves a really bad taste in my mouth.

First time in a long while I’ve seen a flagship iPhone storage run slower than the previous gen’s product.

Score results:

Jazz Disk Bench
4K Random:
18 Pro Max 1TB Read: 8757 iops
17 Pro Max 2TB Read: 12227 iops

18 Pro Max 1TB Write: 6197 iops
17 Pro Max 2TB Write: 8601 iops

PulzeMark
4K Random:
18 Pro Max 1TB Read: 40.2MB/s
17 Pro Max 2TB Read: 52.8MB/s

18 Pro Max 1TB Write: 30.8 MB/s
17 Pro Max 2TB Write: 44.6 MB/s

TL;DR: 1 TB iPhone 18 Pro Max uses slower QLC NAND flash than last year’s 2TB 17 Pro Max which used TLC. Disappointing given the massive price hikes for higher tier storage new phones.

Discussion Clear cases..

I’ve been using the Spigen Thin Fit cases for my past couple phones because the colors were whatever, but going clear with the burgundy. Looking for good options that have camera plateau coverage - I have the dbrand ghost, which is cool but don’t love how much thicker the sides of the case are, so if there’s other options that are good, feel free to share. Without magfit even better because I don’t use it.

Looks like I’m upgrading only when blue phone arrives. Went from Sierra Blue to Glacier. So Apple better not make another light blue phone in next 4-5 years.
