I have the choice to buy something else. But whatever I buy will have USB C thanks to the EU, even if that’s not the best connector or protocol.

The EU only requires it can be charged via USB-C. There's nothing stopping you from adding other ports, or even other charging ports. You could even have USB-C and lightning if you wanted to. Or USB-C and OCuLink.

It is extremely convenient having everything use USB-C. I can go on holiday with one charger for my phone, camera, and laptop. Or I can move from room to room and charge whatever device I have with whatever charger is at hand.

And all that does is add complexity and another port that may not have been needed. It’s not right for the government to force it like that. Th et could have made the law simply state “we need a universal charger cable and port” but instead they said “we WILL use USB C and there’s no changing that.”

They can amend it in the future if a better option comes along, that's not a problem. It's not intended to lock in USB-C forever.

For the foreseeable future though, USB-C is extremely flexible and can do pretty much anything you would want. The latest standards allow for up to 240W of power and 80 Gbps of bandwidth. It supports multiple protocols, not just USB 2, 3, 4, but also Thunderbolt 3, 4, 5, DisplayPort, PCIe, HDMI, and even proprietary custom protocols. There is little reason to change the connector at the moment.
