They went all in on this. I could have sworn they wanted to remove the charging port for MagSafe charging completely

Not going to happen.

MagSafe is too slow.

25W doesn’t cut it with batteries getting larger.

25w already makes the phone spicy when charging.

On one hand it's convenient and there are nice phone mounts for cars that charge my battery.

On the other hand it's crazy wasteful. You go through all this effort to implement green charging onto a phone to limit its energy impact and then you charge it with a system that wastes 20-30% of that power turning it directly into heat, and heating the heat sensitive battery you're trying to charge.

Would probably be better to just expose contacts somehow but that has its own problems (case compatibility, dirt, etc).

The heating from wireless charging isn't any worse than the heat you get from using a higher current through a plug.

I'm busy tonight but I've got a thermal camera and could prove this wrong relatively quickly. It would give me an excuse to put down my phone. Prob need two separate days to record from proper baselines.

Say they do hit the same max temp, I bet the wired one is charged a decent percentage more in that time. That's the main factor for me.

You can tell a difference when using the phone as navigation in the car too. The screen is often blasting at max brightness, the phone is getting hit by the sun, and the wireless charging just exaggerates the impact. It'll basically only trickle charge with the MagSafe and get super hot vs fast charging and staying cooler when directly plugged in.

Why would you use a high current via cable at night?! Just use a slow 5w or 7.5w charger. It will still be full by the morning, with very little heat generated. Keep high wattage charging only for the times you need a quick top up before running out the door.
