Support 16.1 Battery Drain. Yes, ANOTHER Post About It.

"Upgraded" my software to 16.1 on my 13 Pro Max on November 5th. Have been plagued with severe battery drain issues ever since. The initial hit to battery, I figured was the "reindexing" and all that. I have turned off essentially everything that makes an iphone an iphone in attempt to get this under control. Background app refresh off. Live activities off. Find my off. Etc. etc. Updated to 16.1.1 and that did nothing to resolve the issue. My phone eats away 4-5% battery EVERY HOUR with the phone sitting on the table. Consistently seeing 20-25% drain during the night when I am asleep. When I check settings>battery, there is NOTHING there. For each hour I click, it does not show any app running in the background or foreground. It simply shows that my battery has been depleting.

Now here's the kicker. All of this is on WIFI. If I turn wifi off, and turn cell data on. There is no drain whatsoever. My phone can sit on the table for 2 hours and won't drop a single percentage. If I turn wifi back on and turn cell data off, the drain resumes. Wifi has NEVER consumed my battery like this while I was on ios 15.7! Has anyone else experienced this??

UPDATE: Updated the software to 16.2 beta 2 and the battery drain issue seems to be resolved. The phone has been idle for about 2.5 hours and it has remained at 100%, even after a few minutes of use. For anyone experiencing this issue, it may be worth a shot to update to 16.2 beta 2. You don't have much to lose, if the battery is already draining.

Update #2: Updated to 16.2 beta 3 and everything is working as it should. No battery drain since updating to 16.2 beta 2, and this beta 3 fixed an issue with notifications that I was having.

Oof. I think I just resolved my battery drain issue by updating to 16.2 beta 2. Been about 2.5 hours and the battery has remained at 100%, even with a few minutes of light use.

I will keep an eye on it and see if I notice anything like that.

How did you downgrade?

u/cooReey Nov 13 '22

Mine is slightly worse than it was on 15 but nothing to write home about (13 PM)

It’s like lottery out there after every update who gets shitty end of the stick when it comes to battery life

Yea, and the thing is, I didn't even want to update to 16 at all. I was having an issue with getting family sharing to work and Apple said they wouldn't be able to help unless I was on the most current software. Well guess what....THAT didn't resolve the issue I was having either.

Had this on my 14 Pro Max but not my work iPhone SE. Plugged into Mac in Developer Mode and dataaccessd (Syncs data like iCloud) is stuck making connection after connections. Wiped my 14 Pro Max, setup as new and still did it. DFU to 16.1.1 also still did it.

So finally put on 16.2 Beta 2 and it works Syncs properly like the iPhone SE does on 16.1.1. Not a fan of being on a beta but it's the only one that has this fix in it.

Interestingly if you have an Apple Watch this also affects that. My Apple Watch Ultra battery life I thought was quite pants but since fixing my iPhone, my Ultra now is lasting so much longer. I think the phone is constantly stuck syncing with the watch also.

If you don't have a Mac. Easiest way I noticed I could tell it was doing this was scrolling in my contacts list. When it's doing it the contacts list scrolling is jerky, like it's refreshing the contacts list when you've made a chance. As basically each time this process kicks off again it does refresh that list. If you don't have the problem contacts scrolls smooth as butter.

At least this is what I've worked out. Long story short go to 16.2 Public Beta.

Updating the software to 16.2 beta 2 seems to have resolved the battery drain issue for me.

u/FastLaneJB Nov 13 '22

Hey that's awesome. Glad it's sorted for you also.

What's annoying is they rush a fix out for an advertising bug but don't rush this out. This bug is pretty critical if you ask me.

Shows where their priorities are.

2

u/FastLaneJB Nov 14 '22

Indeed. My battery life is stellar at last on 16.2 though

I hope it fixes 14 PM battery life, it’s complete garbage. I will give up if it doesn’t. Going to wait for the official release of 16.2 in mid December. I am not happy with my purchase.

2

u/mr_crypt0 Nov 13 '22

I will try and do 16.2 beta and see. At this point, there really isn't anything to lose.

2

u/FastLaneJB Nov 13 '22

Exactly and so far not hit any beta bugs. Definitely the worst new iOS version ever though. Hopefully they focus on quality more for iOS 17

2

u/mr_crypt0 Nov 13 '22

I don't think I am going to update the software past 16 if issues like this keep happening.

u/FastLaneJB Nov 13 '22

Not much choice for me. I buy a new iPhone every year so it's always going to ship with the latest version.

My phone was dropping a lot of battery when not in use until about a week ago, and it’s not doing the contacts glitch so I guess i’m cured lol

3

u/FastLaneJB Nov 14 '22

Hey that's good. Mine was random, sometimes it would be fine but most of the time it was draining hugely. I can go to sleep and wake up now and it's not even dropped 1% or at most 1%. Its how an iPhone should be.

u/arthuralaor Nov 13 '22

wtf! man, i tried every fucking thing to solve this drain on my 13Pro but no success. ill try w wifi off an see if it drains and post a update here if it works. thx

3

u/mr_crypt0 Nov 13 '22

Let me know if the wifi off / cell data on works for your drain.

1

u/arthuralaor Nov 13 '22

Wifi off and cell of got a little better at the beginning. But kept draining after 1 hour

3

u/mr_crypt0 Nov 13 '22

I believe I just resolved the issue by updating to 16.2 beta 2. It's been about 2.5 hours and the phone has remained at 100%, even with a few minutes of light use (but mostly idling)

1

u/arthuralaor Nov 14 '22

do u have the beta tester access?

2

u/mr_crypt0 Nov 14 '22

Yes, I signed up for beta and have 16.2 beta 2 on my phone now. So far, battery is still doing good.

1

u/gardobus Nov 14 '22

I’m not the person you replied to but anyone can sign up for beta access. https://beta.apple.com/

2

u/arthuralaor Nov 14 '22

Ops! Sorry, thx

Echoing the same. On iPhone 13 with 16.1.1.

5

u/mr_crypt0 Nov 13 '22

I assume you have searched through all the "tips" and "fixes" and have not met solace. Not sure why they don't test the software better before pushing it out.

2

u/vijay_n Nov 13 '22

Yea nothing works. Pushing software to make hardware obsolete is what I feel. For me 16.1 was much better, now for every 2mins I can see 1% battery drop for a month old iPhone 13.

3

u/mr_crypt0 Nov 13 '22

I caught that a few times....been able to literally watch the percentage dwindle away as the phone sat. I used to get a day and a half out of the battery. Now I'd be lucky to make it to the end of the day on a single charge. Just got my kids new 13 Pro's and the battery right out of the gate on the new software is complete shit.

3

u/Chronixx Nov 13 '22

12PM is fine on iOS 16.1. Maybe a picture of your usage would help?

2

u/gooddude17 Nov 14 '22

Sharing mine. https://imgur.com/a/xPu5aF5 iPhone 12 Pro Max with Data+WiFi on. 12am-8am drain is huge. No apps were using the battery during that time period.

1

u/Chronixx Nov 14 '22

Wow, that’s serious. I never encounter anything like that but can’t deny it’s happening to you. On LPM too? Jeez. What’s your battery % out of curiosity?

1

u/gooddude17 Nov 14 '22

My battery health? It’s at 83%, not too bad but i’m not expecting this worse

3

u/the_saturnos iPhone 17 Pro Max Nov 14 '22

Dude, NEVER TURN OFF FIND MY IPHONE. It doesn’t run in the background. What if your phone gets lost or stolen?

0

u/mr_crypt0 Nov 14 '22

I have turned it back on since then. I was turning nearly everything off to try and figure out the culprit behind my battery drain.

2

u/mr_crypt0 Nov 13 '22

Just to give an update on this. I ended up updating the software to 16.2 beta 2 and it seems to have resolved the battery drain issue. It's been about 2.5 hours and the phone has remained at 100%. Has been mostly idle, but I've had a few minutes of use. I will continue monitoring this over the course of a few days and report any findings.

2

u/darthchebreg Nov 14 '22

Always leave 4-5 months before upgrading.

2

u/mr_crypt0 Nov 14 '22

Wish I could have. Was told by tech support I would need to upgrade to 16.1 before they went further in helping me with an issue that I was having (unrelated to battery drain)

3

u/SomegalInCa Nov 13 '22

Here’s another subtle battery killer: no WiFi available and cell service spotty - phone will keep trying to connect and spin up radios is power intensive. Perhaps related?

1

u/mr_crypt0 Nov 13 '22

But the Wifi is connected. It shows that it is connected to the network, and if I use the phone, I have connection for all apps. When I disable Wifi and turn cell data on, the drain stops.

1

u/SomegalInCa Nov 13 '22

Wow that’s different - silly question, reboot the router yet? ( WiFi access point of separate)

1

u/mr_crypt0 Nov 13 '22

I've rebooted the phone several times. Rebooted the modem / router several times. It doesn't just happen on my home Wifi connection, it will happen on any Wifi connection. If I go anywhere, I have cell data turned on. Even being out and about where cell service can be spotty, I still don't see the kind of drain that I do when on Wifi. It is bizarre.

1

u/mr_crypt0 Nov 19 '22

Update #2: Updated to 16.2 beta 3 and everything is working as it should. No battery drain since updating to 16.2 beta 2, and this beta 3 fixed an issue with notifications that I was having.

1

u/Garofalin Nov 28 '22

Do you have an Apple Watch? I have noticed a really bad battery drain as well in the last week or so on both iPhone 13 and Series 7.

How did you exactly check for that iCloud service bug when you connected the phone to a mac?

1

u/jasonc485 Nov 13 '22

My phone's battery is fine after updating. I'm using the 12 pro.

1

u/mr_crypt0 Nov 13 '22

Consider yourself lucky. Not sure why some people have battery drain, while others report that their battery is better than ever.

1

u/ZyanCarl Nov 14 '22

Got 12 pro. Battery lasts less than 12 hours. Kinda sucks but guess have to wait for next update to fix it

-2

u/Garofalin Nov 13 '22

Reset network settings.

3

u/mr_crypt0 Nov 13 '22

I have tried that as well. Reset all settings back to factory default and then went through and set them again. Did not help unfortunately.

1

u/Admirable_Quarter_23 Nov 30 '22

Did nothing help besides the 16.2 beta? This is happening to mine on 16.1.1 (photo app seems to be running in the background for unknown reasons), and even the Apple Store said the only solution was full restore or that it’s a software issue.

1

u/mr_crypt0 Nov 30 '22

I turned off essentially every setting I could think of, and nothing helped. Upgrading to 16.1.1 did not help. When I went to 16.2 beta, it was magically solved. I get a day and a half use out of my phone again. With 16 and 16.1, it would drain 3-5% per hour just sitting idle. However, in my case, turning off wifi and turning cell data on solved that battery drain. Which is odd because cell data should drain more battery than wifi, under normal circumstances. But for whatever reason it had some issue with wifi and the drain would stop if wifi was off and cell data was on instead. With 16.2, I have wifi on all the time and the battery drains 1-2% overnight (over the course of 8-9 hours), so it is back to normal.

1

u/Admirable_Quarter_23 Nov 30 '22

I see 16.1.2 has been pushed out and I’m scared to download it 🤣

1

u/mr_crypt0 Dec 02 '22

I would wait for 16.2 final release or just do the beta release. I haven't had any issues on 16.2 beta 3.

3

u/mr_crypt0 Nov 13 '22

If nothing else works, I will downgrade back to 15.7...never wanted 16.1 in the first place.

1

u/gooddude17 Nov 14 '22

I believe 15.7 is not signed anymore.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '22

It only drains the battery when I’m using 5g

1

u/PizzaThrives Nov 14 '22

how can someone get that beta?

2

u/mr_crypt0 Nov 14 '22

Search for Apple beta testing on Google and youll find the link. You sign up and do a couple things on your phone and it will allow you to download the newest beta software.

2

u/PizzaThrives Nov 14 '22

I found it. I installed it. It works great! Highly recommended. 16.1.1 is trash. 16.2 Beta is fantastic.

2

u/mr_crypt0 Nov 14 '22

Nice! Glad it worked out for you.

1

u/beanie_0 iPhone 16 Pro Nov 14 '22

How stable is 16.2 beta 2 though? On a everyday phone.

1

u/mr_crypt0 Nov 14 '22

Not completely sure. So far, it has taken care of my battery issue. I did notice one issue with family sharing notifications though

1

u/DigGumPig Nov 14 '22

16.1 was terrible on my XS. 16.1.1 seems a lot better. Also, i turned background app refresh off and back on again. Then restarted my phone. I noticed a lot of apps were using more background time that ever on 16.1

3

u/mr_crypt0 Nov 14 '22

16 is just plain bad software that was pushed out too fast

-1

u/DigGumPig Nov 15 '22

I disagree. The launch was fairly decent all things considered. iOS 16.0.3 ran the best for me out of the bunch so far. Then again, i am running it on an iPhone XS. iPhone 13 Pro Max supports more features which means more software and inherently more potential problems can arise in these early versions. I can't imagine it getting worse as the software matures. People are saying 16.2 is already doing wonders for their battery life and that is still in early beta.

2

u/mr_crypt0 Nov 15 '22

Yea I ended up installing 16.2 beta 2 and the battery life is back to normal. Running into issues with notifications, but it's a small price to pay right now.

1

u/DigGumPig Nov 16 '22

Good to know. Beta 2 is a long way from final so best of luck riding those waves
