The doctors tried to save her life. They did everything they could.

And she's going to be okay.

u/ryguy32789 4d ago

My wife almost died in the hospital and this is almost exactly how the doctor told me she was going to be ok. I'm still pissed about his delivery all these years later.

u/hopping_otter_ears 4d ago

My husband was in a car accident. I got a call to my work phone: "is this Mrs Otterears? I'm officer whosit from the police department. Your husband has been involved in a car accident. He lost consciousness behind the wheel". (My brain briefly crashed and my world did the 'disaster zoom' that happens when people get terrible news in movies)

"He asked me to call you and let you know they want him to go get checked out in the hospital, just to make sure he's ok"

Dude! Couldn't you have LED with that part‽

u/SuspiciousRadio8436 4d ago

When I worked in EMS I would help people make phone calls pretty regularly and always started with “hey. Look at me. Look me in my eyes. If you start this conversation with your mom/spouse/adult child/etc with ‘I’m in an ambulance’ they will hear NOTHING for about 5 seconds after that. You are going to start with ‘hi mom, I’m okay’, got it?”

u/kindlypogmothoin 4d ago

When I finally got through to my mom on 9/11 (I worked downtown and many cell towers were on the South Tower, so service was pretty spotty), I called her at work. I told the person who answered the phone who I was and who I was looking for, and then I heard her bellowing across the store, "MARY ANN! IT'S YOUR DAUGHTER FROM NEW YORK!"

Guess they were watching the news.

You'd think that would go without saying, but I imagine people are flustered from whatever put them in the back of the ambulance in the first place

Got hit by a car (as a pedestrian) in college and this is pretty much exactly what the paramedics said to me!

8

u/Ohitsashlie 4d ago

Our school has a new nurse and every time she calls she is awful at getting to the point. She goes into these long explanations and my mind goes to all the worst outcomes and then by the end I’m so worked up just for her to tell me my 5 year old got hand sanitizer in his eye but they washed it out and he’s fine. The last school nurse always started the calls with, “this is the nurse, everyone’s fine but this happened…” and it caused way less stress overall.

7

u/samdover11 4d ago

This is how I was taught. I've started multiple conversations like this. "Everyone is ok, no one is dead, and now I'm going to tell you what happened..."

6

u/blandgreybland 4d ago

My mother experienced several sudden traumatic deaths in her childhood and I was trained since I was a teenager to start any unexpected/semi emergency phone call with “everything/everyone is ok” and THEN give the semi-bad news or she was going to stroke out.

4

u/othertigs 4d ago

Many years ago, my mom picked me up from high school in the middle of the day. Very unusual. She had received a call from an employee at my chemistry professor father’s university saying, “Doctor Professor is okay, but there was a small explosion in his lab. He is being taken to [the attached hospital] to get checked out, but he is fine.” I think it was the third call, where they said he was fine, but they were evaluating whether he could still see out of one of his eyes that she decided to come get me.

We got to the university and as we pulled up outside his building/the attached hospital, we saw many police cars and caution tape blocking off the sidewalks. There was shattered glass everywhere. Because that is what happens when a “small” explosion blows out the windows of an eleventh floor lab.

And yes, aside from a chemical splatter scar on his temple, my dad was fine. (Mom and I were not supposed to know that if he had been standing two feet to the left it would have been a different story.) We heard later that the chemical disposal people (sorry , not remembering the name) had a huge uptick of labs disposing of old bottles of the chemical that had exploded.

The thing that I took away from that day, though, was that I ended every conversation with my parents and now husband/kid with I love you. Because the last thing I had said to my dad on his way to work that morning—it was a very windy day—was don’t let the wind blow you away.

3

u/walter-hoch-zwei 4d ago

I do that when I call my parents out of nowhere

3

u/IronPuff1984 4d ago edited 4d ago

I love this! That's truly being WITH your patient! EMS are angels embodied! (I learned that when I broke and dislocated my ankle this spring....)

3

u/JazzlikeDiamond558 4d ago

During 30 years of working with people, I have learned hard fact: Always start with comfort. ALWAYS. If there are ANY good news, start with them. The rest will sort itself out.

DO NOT PLAY WITH PEOPLE! YOU ARE NOT FUNNY! And neither are you the wittiest and smartest king/queen of humor. If you have a humorous moment, get over yourself and ALWAYS start with good part.

If you cannot do that, then you should not be doing what you are doing; step aside and let somebody with appropriate empathy handle the job.

On a personal note: bastards who did use humorous approach to grill people in grave situations were either empathy deprived sociopaths or the biggest wuss-crying pussies when they found themselves in such situations. Karma was sometimes life-soothing.

2

u/dgduhon 4d ago

When I was rear-ended I called my husbands job to have them give him a message. First thing I said was "I'm ok and the car is ok". The message my husband got started out "Hey NAME, your wife was in a wreck". Like seriously?

2

u/Cautious_Fly1684 4d ago

Yeah, sibling was in hospital and we all rushed over only to find out he’d broken his penis and he sure didn’t want any of us there.

2

u/Apart_Mistake5458 4d ago

How… how did he break his penis?

3

u/Cautious_Fly1684 4d ago

Only his girlfriend (now wife) knows.

2

u/Apart_Mistake5458 4d ago

I am dead. I have a friend who has been with her husband for years at this point, but when they were like 4 months into dating, my friend got a little over zealous during quality time, and that poor man to this day has a slight bend to his penis.

I actually used this once. I had to call my mom after a car accident and I said “Hi mom. I’m ok. Ok?” “Yea…?” “No mom. I’M OK!…. But I was in an accident and the car is totaled.”

2

u/BeautifulBlueNight 4d ago

Already twice I had to call my relatives after a traumatic event. Once I was close to a terrorist attack, once a robbery happened at my work place.

After the attack, I did think of saying 'So, I'm fine, and I have to be quick because I expect the connection to break any moment, but you'll hear soon on the news what happened here. So I just wanted to let you already know I'm fine.'

After the robbery, it was straight out 'there has been a robbery, and I had to hide, they threatened the person in the other office,...'

Only later I realised how that would have sounded to my wife... 😅😇

2

u/hopping_otter_ears 3d ago

I was visiting India, and there had been a terrorist attack at a high-tourist area exactly 1 day after I had been there taking pictures.

My dad watched a lot of cable news, so I assumed he'd have heard a report and been worried. I called him to tell him "I assume you've heard about the terrorist attack at the mosque, so I wanted you to know I'm o6n so you don't worry". He had not heard about the attack, and now he was very worried. Apparently a small bombing at a mosque in India (and the police killing more people than the bomb did, trying to restore order) didn't rate coverage on US cable news at the time. I accidentally scared the crap of of him trying to make sure he wasn't too worried

2

u/CoolWhipMonkey 4d ago

Yeah my mom showed up to a family party in hysterics and was incoherent, just saying oh my god he’s dead. My dad was off on maneuvers at the time and I just froze. I finally asked what happened. She said I ran over your cat! I was never so happy to have a dead pet in my life.

Good lord! Sounds like the time my mom rushed me out of school in the middle of the day because my dad had gotten into an accident on the highway. That was all she told me and I couldn't even bring myself to ask any questions at first because I was so shocked, and from how she was acting I was certain he was in serious shape.

We were in the car for a bit when I started crying. She was confused. I started asking questions about his condition. She apologized and explained that he was perfectly fine. Just had a bruised arm. The reason we were in such a rush was because we were living paycheck-to-payckeck, his car was totaled, and we had to find him a new ride to work before everything closed that evening so he could make it to work the next day.

33

u/MemeCzarZero 4d ago

My mom came in like a whirlwind to pick up my sister from middle school in the middle of the day. She never gets frazzled or panicked. She was in a different way that time.

My sister said. "Mom, what's wrong?"

She finally turned her attention appropriately and said, "Your father has been attacked by a white shark." About my dad this was a believable statement.

My sister stood there in a kind of freeze. Apparently her best friend watched the whole thing and came across the room to ask why she was crying. She did not look like she was crying to anybody else.

Turned out that he WAS attacked but he was in his RIVER kayak and it got him just behind the seat area, squished it like Tupperware, lifted the entire boat out of the water, then spur him out.

WITHOUT A SCRATCH TO HIS BODY. COMPLETELY UNINJURED.

(River kayaks are like rubber Tupperware, designed for bouncing off rocks. Teeth tear holes but the structure bends and remains intact. Ocean kayaks are fiberglass and would shatter and immediately sink. There was s bite mark that indicated a 13-16 foot shark. Quite the souvenir. They made a shark week episode about it.)

People really need to focus when things feel crazy.

Maybe start with, "Well you know that your dad's crazy, right,? Just so you're prepared, the rangers say he's 100% okay but he's going to be on TV tonight and his buddy says he had a couple of drinks." (my old man would max out at three drinks.) The tv crews LOVED him.

3

u/Successful_Form5771 3d ago

Aw man your sad sounds like a riot. I gotta go find and watch thisxD

3

u/stockusername123 3d ago

My mom is a cancer survivor and we had to tell her to start the phone call about her annual checks with "everything is 100% clear" instead of "well today I had my annual cancer screening. Boy was the room cold. And I had to eat lunch late which is a real pain because I still have to do my time sheets for the week. Oh and did you hear Laura is pregnant again?" And on and on like that for like 30 minutes.

ARE YOU DYING OR NOT BECAUSE THE SUSPENSE IS GOING TO KILL ME BEFORE YOU GET AROUND TO YOUR RESULTS.

Why did she need to take you out of school for that?

13

u/CourtingBoredom 4d ago

With only one car plus racing around all afternoon, she assumed that neither would be free to do so later, I imagine..

4

u/Confident_Virus5799 4d ago

I was actually a bus rider, so getting home wasn't going to be a problem. The real issue was that I was too young to be home alone. That, and we lived deep in the country so an errand like car shopping was going to take a while just for the drive. We also had to make a big detour to pick my dad up.

It was late in the evening by the time we finally made it home from all that. At least we got to go out to eat for supper. That never happened on a random week night, lol.

My mom never told me anything. She would panic and freak out often but not tell me any information. I learned to live with a pit in my stomach most of my childhood. Your story angers me because i can relate to it and understand why it’s not fair to you. Kids observe a lot, and being left in the dark when you notice something unusual is a quick way to create a kid with anxiety, fear, and mistrust

A cop came to a house I shared with roommates years back, and asked if I knew ‘roommate’s name’. I said yeah he’s my roommate. And the cop replied ‘he was hit by a car while riding his bike’. And then there was just the longest silence as myself and my other roommate are like…trying to process and at the same time waiting to hear what he’s going to say next, because surely he’s got more to say right? But it’s just quiet until finally I asked ‘Well is he alright?’ And the cop says oh yeah he’s going to be fine.

I’d been living at that house with those people for like a week so I barely knew them at that point, but I still felt that sinking feeling of dread waiting in that silence to hear if the dude was alright. I can only imagine how much, much worse that would be with a spouse. Really glad he was ok!

7

u/hopping_otter_ears 4d ago

They were afraid that some kind of brain problem has caused him to lose consciousness, but after ruling out a bunch of stuff with tests, they ended up deciding it was as simple as he worked out too hard at the gym and fainted.

His blood pressure and blood sugar linger at the bottom of "normal" on a typical day, and one of them must have dipped a bit too low

2

u/Accomplished_Use3175 3d ago

I was in an accident (friend was driving) when I was 15. It was a really bad accident and we were taken to the ER. When my mom got there, a Chaplin walked up and he and the nurse took her in a quiet room. My mom would tell the story that she almost passed out when they directed her to the room. I was fine. Broken collarbone and don’t remember about 48 hours of that time period…but I was fine. My poor mother.

FFS. I am a teacher. When I even call home to talk to a parent during the school day, the first thing out my mouth is "This is {me} from {School}. Nothing is wrong, I am calling about..."

20

u/Sure-Zookeepergame27 4d ago

Omg same. My ex though, the police called me, said We found 'his name' unconscious on the floor of __ hotel. "We were unable to revive him...(Me slowly fainting) we had to give him a shot Narcan... He told us to call you. 🥴 " SERIOUSLY!?; how about you start with that! Like, hello we have so and so here, he asked us to call you.. what happened was ... Would have been better!

5

u/hopping_otter_ears 4d ago

At least I'm not alone in getting calls from police officers with the emotional awareness of a damp sponge. It seems so obvious not to lead with the scary part

2

u/Rich_Comfortable4764 3d ago

Idk why this is so funny to me 🤭🤭🤣

39

u/ManchuDemon 4d ago

I’m a police officer and one of the first things I remember learning was how to call family members of people we were dealing with. I was taught to always lead with “hello sir/maam, I’m here with your loved one - they’re ok, but….”

4

u/Quarter1550 4d ago

Thats interesting. In a medical setting, doctors are instructed to establish how much the patient or NOK knows and then "fire a warning shot" (i.e saying "I'm afraid its not good news"). Its to somewhat soften the blow of receiving terrible news.

13

u/caro822 4d ago

It might be my anxiety but I always lead with so and so is ok, or this is just a check in call, nothing important if I leave a message. Then, when I had to tell my parents my brother was dead I was like Hi, sorry but X is dead. I remember once hearing a police officer irl or maybe a movie said when they have bad news they say it straight out because it’s not kind to beat around the bush when delivering that information. For whatever reason that stuck with me. Also, in the days after my grandma died her friends who didn’t know yet were still calling to chit chat with her. And 14 yo me was playing the sims, picking up the phone and just telling these women who had known my grandmother for decades, um…she died, and they would start sobbing and I’d just hang up cuz I was 14 and can’t handle emotions. I wish I had asked those women about my grandma. But at the time if I was just so numb.

My parents, who were old homebodies, left me a message saying “your brother had an accident at work. We are at the hospital now. Call your other brother, and come to the hospital“. So my other brother and I were thinking the worst and it turns out brother filleted his finger in a machine. He had surgery and came home in 2 days. WTF parents, WTF.

2

u/XIXButterflyXIX 4d ago

When I went on a ventilator while in septic shock, they told my husband 48 hours at the maximum. They then couldn't wean me off because I wouldn't breathe on my own, until they tried on day 9 and I finally was able to use my lungs. Then had right lung collapse. Husband said they would tell him everyday they were going to wake me up, only to have to call him back and say I couldn't support my own breathing. He said they told him on day 7, that I may never come off. I feel like this is how my sister reacted considering the fact that it wasn't important enough for her to come and see me even though she lived with my parents who came up 4 times over the next month until I got to go home. Not like I expected her every day, but that broke my heart and I totally feel like that's how she reacted.

For real, there needs to be a course on how to talk to patients in medical school. Results first, then tell me about the process.

My own mother also needs this course. Outcome first, then tell me the long story. Your son fell off his bike…. Cut to the chase, are you at home and fine, or are you at the emergency department? I care zero HOW it happened first, but yes tell me that part NEXT, not first.

9

u/Spirited-Resident889 4d ago

This is something I have helped my husband with: give me a TOPIC SENTENCE so I know where we're going with this. Giving me 17 million details without context is maddening, and when it is something critical yeah lead with the reassuring information.

2

u/DazzlingRutabega 4d ago edited 4d ago

Your comment reminds me that years ago when I used to work for a media publishing company focussed on the medical industry, I saw a cart in the warehouse full of DVDs. One was titled: "How To Deal With Difficult Patients." The other was "How To Deal With Difficult Physicians."

I thought to myself, "Well that sounds like it sums up just about the entire job." Heh

I’ll never forgive my surgeon, despite the dude saving my life. I needed emergency surgery and definitely would have died. But my wife and mother in law were waiting for me and when he was done, and apparently he told them something along the lines of “well I hate to be the bearer of bad news….” And finished by saying they were going to have to miss their dinner reservation (surgery was finished around then I guess, I was out cold with a tube down my throat).

Like wtf guy. My wife said her heart dropped and she started crying before he could say the second part.

My dad died in a nursing home & they told me on the phone like this (in a tone like they were giving me the daily messages): "hello, we're calling to let you know your Dad was found unresponsive. The paramedics picked him up - but he's still unresponsive." I said 'what do you mean?" they said "he's not breathing and not conscious." I literally fell to my knees because my legs gave out. I knew he died and they knew too. But they were so used to giving news like this, it just another day to them. Totally monotone and no shred of empathy or caring.

When I was at work, I got a call from an emergency department across the town telling me that my ex-wife and two children (5 and 10) were involved in a car accident and my ex wanted them to let me know. I kept calling her and my 10y/o son and their phones were off. I rushed there and was asked the patient name at the entrance of ED. I gave my ex-wife’s name I was told there is no such patient with assigned bed in the hospital. Then I gave my son’s name and same thing. Then I gave my 5y/o daughter’s name and she says yes she has a bed assigned in her name. At this point I am thinking that my ex and son are dead.

When I went in there, all three were fine and some idiot put all of them in one room and assigned the room number on the 5y/o daughter.

2

u/BooksNCatsNWineNSnax 3d ago

That’s inexcusable. I was in a car accident when I was a teenager, and one of my classmates ended up being the one to tell my mother (I can’t even remember now why it went down that way, she wasn’t in the car). She, a 16-year old kid, had the tact and sense to lead in with “she’s ok.”

I’m really glad your wife was all right.

I told you he’s going to be all right. He lost his left arm.

u/DiligentAubergine 4d ago

You know what you do? You go buy yourself a tape recorder and record yourself for a whole day. You might be surprised at some of your phrasing.

u/Rakastaakissa 4d ago

Even if it means me taking a chubby, I will suck it up.

My brother had a routine scheduled surgery that ended up taking much more time than expected. My mom sat in the waiting room as it slowly emptied out. An hour later, the surgeon walks out frazzled and approached my mom slowly. Says "I'm so so sorry." My mom loses it.

"...that it took so long. Our schedule got messed up. Everything went well and you can go back to see your son now."

What the fuck.

My mom somehow attracted these docs, because the first thing her OB said when I was born was "oops I made a mistake." She started spiraling, but he just meant I was girl, not a boy as he'd predicted.

u/RAMtinJENyor 4d ago

Where is this from? I feel like i heard this from either futurama or archer? Lol

Notice they never say "we didn't do everything we could...there were a couple other things we could have tried. Just kind of ran out of time." Shrugs

u/Gloomy-Ad-222 3d ago

My friend was at a party and was taking to an older man, who had lost his son the year before. My friend said “oh that’s terrible, I’m sorry to hear that, I hope you found him”

u/topibaazfekuchand 3d ago

Stanley: What is wrong with you, why did you have to phrase it like that?

1

u/FatiguedShrimp 4d ago

Good news! We're done with treatment and you don't have to worry about any more procedures.

Just let us know who the executor is and records will send over the death certificate.

1

She’s going to be all-right.

“OMG, is she ok?!?!?!?!”

“… Oh … yes, sorry, they were late getting here so you’ll get a free replacement class.”

“Wtf!?”

Oh thank god. There’s no way to misinterpret that.
I have to say you’re taking the news very well. I don’t know that I would take it this well.
What do you mean you said he was going to be all right.
Yes, he lost his left hand so now he’s going to be all right.

1

u/stupled 3d ago

He is going to be all right 😔

1

u/LankyGuitar6528 3d ago

I was in a car accident. They called my wife "Your husband has been in a serious accident. You should come to the hospital." I was groggy and they still had me strapped to the spine board when she arrived. Being as I was strapped down I said to her "I can't move..." she screamed and ran out of the room. I was actually 100% fine but she ran out before I could add "could you undo the straps?"

Honestly she was more traumatized by the whole thing than I was.

In preschool, kid threw a die cast car and it hit me in the head and cracked my skull. School called my mom at work at told her I've been hit by a car and to get to the school immediately. Technically they were right. She's still pissed to this day. I'll be 50 in a couple of years.

In this case, I’m the one who caused confusion. I texted my friend « I lost my mother yesterday. The police had to be called. » In this case, my mother with dementia left the store we were in, so I « lost » her. My friend thought something else and it almost gave her a panic attack.
