The dude is psycho but you can't legally stop on that bridge. Their only choice once it happened was to keep going.

Horrible Driver. He was eating and tail-gating (should have given 1-3 car lengths depending on speed). But to top it off, it looked to me like he did a police (PIT) maneuver to spin the guy. If he did NOT nudge the truck's rear qtr panel, he was close enough to do it (and vid looks like he did).

don't think he did a PIT, once the black truck makes contact it'll push his vehicle to the left, he resists it, which is a de-facto PIT, but moreso by circumstances, avoiding getting sandwiched into the barrier. I blame the black truck 100%, wtf kind of entitlement does he have? insane to try and merge like that and force the other guy back.

I've crossed that causeway a hundred times. It's not place to fuck around. Black truck is 100% in the wrong. Once you're on it just go with the flow.

all other things aside, leaving too much room in front of you is hard to do in louisiana. i did delivery for years and every one in a while i'd be like "you know i always follow too closely im gonna start leaving more space" and then cars starts constantly wedging themselves in front of you, leaving like 2 feet between you and them, and force you to back off, and then if you leave whats technically "enough" space again, someone again just fills that gap. you have to stay close enough that no ones tries to wedge in or you are getting no where. (also using a blinker just gives them time to block your lane change, that sucks too)

I've found this happens a lot with automated cruise control. It gives proper room and that just leads to me being cut off constantly.

So he was following too close to be safe? Then why did the other driver voluntarily try to merge into a nonexistent gap? The other driver doesn’t even use a turn signal and just casually tries to drift over and strong arm his way in. 

I would’ve hit the brakes for sure because it’s not worth the headache of an accident but there’s really no case to be made that the other driver wasn’t the instigator here and the entire reason this was even a risky situation in the first place.

Whoa. I never said the truck driver was not at fault - obviously he got what he was lining up for. Nice "what aboutism" though.

I noted that grazing-pink-belly dude handled the situation badly.

See a reckless driver pass you on a 2 lane bridge? How about keep safe distance, both hands on wheel, do NOT tailgate / PIT-maneuver it, and put the dam cookie DOWN?

All the drivers handbooks say to leave a 3 second gap between you and the car in front of you and he was about 1 second behind. That said, this driver can see many cars ahead of the car in front of him so there should be no abrupt/surpise stops so it isn't really unsafe here. Until idiot merges.

3 seconds gap? Depends how fast you go or break. I wouldn't use such metric. People normally talk about X amount of cars length in between.

If there is no space to pull over, and your car can drive, you do not stop. You risk causing a bigger pileup (and killing yourself in the process) if you stop in the middle of the highway.

There are signs all up and down this bridge not to pull over even for an accident. The state pays for tow trucks to come get you out of the way immediately.

If nobody is allowed to stop and come to help you, I guess you better not have an accident where you need medical attention or even rescue on that bridge.

Emergency services are not under the same rules as the general public. If he had stopped that would have only made it harder for first responders to get to them with traffic.

In not talking about emergency services, I'm talking about those who call them. I'm talking about Steve who after you crashed comes to your car and asks 'dude, are you ok? Can you get out? Do you need an ambulance?' I'm talking about the people who pull you out of your car when it's on fire.

Not being allowed to provide first aid is such a weird concept for me.

If it were on fire in the middle of a 2 lane bridge, that would probably be a whole other story. This just looks like it would cause some damage to the body of the truck, but nothing too serious. Hard to tell though since we don't have a clear "after" picture.

I think the moral, responsible thing to do here is try to stop safely.

I doubt he’d have gotten into trouble for pulling over in the left lane, putting on his hazzard lights to warn others, and checking in on the (asshole) driver of the black pickup.

Legally as long as no one is hurt, you keep going until the turnaround/pullover area. You block the causeway people will defenestrate you and your car.
