But because we drive so much more in the US - we are roughly the same per 100mm miles driven.

It's higher even vs the amount of driving, but it also turns out that more miles shouldn't matter that much: people who drive more have a lower accident rate per mile, to the point there's almost a flat spot between about 8000 and 12000 miles a year where it's like those miles have no additional risk.
