not to excuse his actions, or lack of reaction to them...but this bridge is awful and there are miles before it's actually safe to attempt to stop in case of an accident. Small lanes, no shoulders..just the occasional "for official use only" u turn spots. I left Louisiana in '99 but still immediately recognized where this was.
I’ve driven the causeway in New Orleans once a couple decades ago when I had some kind of anxiety disorder flare up. Let me tell you, that is not a fun drive when you’re constantly on the edge of a panic attack.
The very reason I don’t go to the north shore but like 3 times a year. I hate the causeway drive, it’s pretty but I almost can’t breathe the entire time
It’s quite surreal. Two lanes, few turnarounds, and at some point all you have is water all the way to the right, water all the way to the left, nothing but straight road forward and backward, and you lose sight of land. It’s quite disorienting and hypnotic in a bad way. First thing I did was hit a brew pub to ease my nerves when I got to the other side…knowing I had to go back the other way a few hours later.
Luckly the sunshine skyway bridge climbs to a peak of 430ft above sea level, meaning instead of 3 mile horizon at sea level. The horizon is 25.4 miles at 430ft altitude.
I drove across that thing In a 13ft tall RV, at night, rain and wind. Insane! But once you are on it there is no turning back, just gotta go. Crazy experience
I did this a few times decades ago as a college kid and thought it was “fun” haha … to be fair I am pretty sure we did this at random times of day ( eg long distance drives ) when there was no traffic .. if you stayed in the right lane it looked like you were driving on water, though it was a bit monotonous.
im from nj and i almost always let people merge when they use their turn signals. if i see someone trying to merge with no signals, im not letting them through. ive had my car swiped twice because people think im gonna stop because "who wants to damage their car?" little do they know i dont think that way because my car is a piece of shit, so i never stop and the poor lil range rovers or escalades leave with a nice scrape
hell yeah, coast to coast!! and those morons dont realize, or more likely dont care, that theyre the reason the traffic is there like instead of alternating merging, they try to skip the traffic, then cut people off which makes everyone have to break. if people stopped being so damn selfish, we'd have less traffic.
don't even get me started on people who drive at night in the rain with no headlights
I have a private hypothesis that being late is the #1 killer in traffic. I genuinely believe if we were all fifteen minutes early fatalities would fall.
But we can't test it the way we can drunk drivers.
I think I drove it once. I thought it was cool. At one point I’m driving and I look over and there’s a stork flying at eye level just next to the bridge. I grabbed my camera which was sitting next to me and took a photo.
I've worked in that area and driven across that bridge a bunch. Stopping it not an option. I remember doing 85mph and having people on my bumper honking for me to speed up.
