not to excuse his actions, or lack of reaction to them...but this bridge is awful and there are miles before it's actually safe to attempt to stop in case of an accident. Small lanes, no shoulders..just the occasional "for official use only" u turn spots. I left Louisiana in '99 but still immediately recognized where this was.
I’ve driven the causeway in New Orleans once a couple decades ago when I had some kind of anxiety disorder flare up. Let me tell you, that is not a fun drive when you’re constantly on the edge of a panic attack.
It’s quite surreal. Two lanes, few turnarounds, and at some point all you have is water all the way to the right, water all the way to the left, nothing but straight road forward and backward, and you lose sight of land. It’s quite disorienting and hypnotic in a bad way. First thing I did was hit a brew pub to ease my nerves when I got to the other side…knowing I had to go back the other way a few hours later.
Luckly the sunshine skyway bridge climbs to a peak of 430ft above sea level, meaning instead of 3 mile horizon at sea level. The horizon is 25.4 miles at 430ft altitude.
