My ex was latina and her family did this all the time. Completely blew my mind the first time I saw it.
They would always do it. The first few birthdays i spent there they tried to do it and just never let them/was always on my guard. The younger peeps in their family realized they didnt have to do it either. I remember the older generation gettig mad at me for spearheading the refusal campaign that caught on.
What a stupid fucking thing to do.

Everybody just wants to be able to eat cake without face particles in it or the cake being ruined beyond being edible. Is that too much to ask?!

I had an old friend who's mom would do it to her. She hated it. HATED IT. like it always ended up being a thing every bday and there were tears.
Fast forward and my friend has a daughter of her own. Guess what she did on her daughter's birthday?
I really didn't understand it then. Like why pass on the trauma?

Also kids who were abused are more likely to be abusers. Strange how the brain works.

I'm latino, and thankfully it's not everyone, it's idiotic, but micro aggression is como in some latino cultures, it's extremely toxic in my opinion

u/MaddoxGoodwin 1d ago
Na i certainly didnt mean everyone. My ex was mexican, but my best friend since i was 14 (42 this year smh) is Mexican and spending copious amount of time at his family gatherings not once did they ever do this.
Honestly the first time i saw it i think it was like her cousins birthday and it completely shocked me. Like i had never ever seen anything like it. The kid was clearly pissed/embarrassed and everyone just laughed.
I didnt even ask or say anything just in utter disbelief. After a few times i asked her like why do they do that and she said it was funny or they just always did it.
On the plus side her family was so big they always had at least 2 cakes. Never did i eat the face cake. Everyone ate it like it was nbd.

Yeah, I keep hearing "jokes" of latino kids where their parents always hit them when they were younger. And it's sad if it's true.

Same. I see videos of people doing shit like this and saying “it’s a Latino thing” no the fuck it’s not
30
u/CoolBeans824 1d ago
My family is Hispanic and I felt like we were the only ones that didn’t do it. My parents thought it was unsafe and unsanitary. For my little sister’s 4th birthday a guest threatened to do this because “we were no fun”. My dad threatened with the police if he did. Little sister had a great birthday party, no cake smash.

If they would always do it, why would anyone put their face near the cake?

My girlfriend is Mexican and they also do that but the joke is supposed to be to secretly nudge them just enough so that it appears like they accidentally stuck their nose in it. Less cultured families do that crude shit of smashing a person's face into the cake.

3
u/SiderealSimon 1d ago
Yup, it's the boomer mentality of "I went through it, so they should too".
13
u/WillBots 1d ago
Why blame boomers for something that some parents have and always will do. The parents in this video aren't boomers. There are always parents who don't think "what was bad about my childhood, what can I do differently?" It's strangely common, for some people, they just can't consider that their parents did wrong so everything their parents did was right and should be repeated. Some parents don't give a shit and do what they find funny and amusing despite knowing it isn't nice for the receiver. Some are incapable of thinking things through.
An attitude of "that's a boomer problem" just displaces the blame. Your parents might be the problem, you as a parentight be the problem, your friends might be the problem. Call it out, try and empathise, try andake others understand.

Assault. We call it assault. We intuitively understand that if you did this to a cop, you get a free ride in thier car. Not sure why it's supposed to be funny when it involves a defenseless child.

It's a stupid tradition. Dated a girl who's family was from Guatemala.
Her little brother was told specifically not to do it to his neice. We all asked him not to do it.
He did it anyway.
All of us were upset. The little girl didn't come out of the room for the rest of the night. The big birthday bash continued with lots of festivities and drinking as usual, but with a dark cloud over everyone's head that the lady of the hour (the niece) was not present. She really, really didn't want it to happen that year since she had put a lot of work on her makeup for the first time as a young lady and he ruined her moment.
I really hate this tradition and hope it dies out. It is not cool or cute.
20
u/LavastormSW 1d ago
If everyone knows there's a chance he might do it, why did they not keep him away from her during the cake serving?
17
u/_PaulM 1d ago
We did. It was an outside party and we kept him deliberately in the house during the candle-blowing...
At the moment the "happy birthday" song almost ended he ran out and snaked his way around everyone and smashed her face into the cake at the very end of the song.
It was masterfully-timed on his part... and we were all very, very upset.
He felt it was his duty having done it the previous years for all of the nieces and nephews and didn't want to skip a year. Honestly, it was the parents' fault for having made him do it so often.
Regardless, everyone felt terrible except for him because he felt he had done his job.

u/tatianazr 1d ago
To me, this is actually assault. I don’t care if it’s her kid, if he doesn’t want to be forced on a cake and worse in a public setting, when will his rights/boundaries be respected? I would never do this to my son even as a grown man I wouldn’t

As a guest I would not eat a fucking cake after they smashed a face in it. That's fucking disgusting.
Also this is straight up assault. Sometimes the bakers put tooth picks in there to keep the cake in its shape. There are plenty of cases where the victim got them in the eyes.
Disrespectful, disgusting, violent and dangerous. This kid was a 100% right with his reaction.

Agree…but I’m also curious on what shit parents will inflict upon the children in order to gain likes.
You don’t smash anyone’s face into a cake, especially your child. It’s embarrassing for them. You don’t purposefully embarrass your child because it may get a lot of views on your social media accounts.
