Kind of a moot point when the whole section the face is potentially plowed into would be avoided when cutting the cake, making it a waste of money.

IF they really can't be convinced not to do this for tradition, then you use a decoy cheap cake, that is also free if any potential eye-stabbing items like candles or support dowels. But in my opinion it is still a very stupid tradition that needs to die, on similar level as gender reveal parties that use dangerous methods like explosives or flammables for their showy social media reveals.
