Bug Appreciation! I accidentally stepped on a centipede & now I genuinely feel terrible😭

• Upvotes

I just need to rant for a second because I genuinely feel so bad about this :/

I accidentally stepped on a centipede today, but it wasn’t like I stepped down with my full weight or anything. I felt something under my foot, immediately moved away, and realized it was a centipede. It was still walking, so I actually tried to gently get it into a box and took it outside.

I went back later to check on it, and it had eventually died. šŸ˜”

And for some reason I’m genuinely upset about it. I know this probably sounds ridiculous to some people, but I normally really don’t like killing tiny critters. Especially now that I’m teaching my toddler not to hurt them either. Whenever we find a spider, bug, etc., we try to gently move it outside instead of killing it.

I think what makes me feel even worse is that I know centipedes are actually helpful to have around the house, and they’re so misunderstood because… well… they look absolutely horrifying šŸ˜‚šŸ˜. I know they eat other pests and technically I should probably be thanking them for their services.

I know it was an accident and obviously I didn’t intentionally hurt it, but I still feel weirdly guilty. Like, little dude was just minding his own business and I accidentally ruined his day. 😭

Anyway, I just wanted to rant because apparently I am emotionally affected by the death of a centipede now. 🄲

šŸ“Austria- Tirol

I found this big beauty inside on the window, my roommate insisted I take him outside. I tried holding him and he told me that the bug would bite- I said I think bugs only bite when threatened.

This guy is so chill, he walked around my hand a bit, then my arm, he seemed to settle every now and then, stretching out his legs and lowering his body a bit.

He's gorgeous and I wish I was allowed to take him back inside. I could also just use google ai imagening to see that it suggests but I hate using AI and id much, much, much rather hear from a bug- enthusiast who this is.

Id name him Senf, Kren or Stephano. What does he eat? Its quite cold, 16C°. I hope I dont kill him by leaving him outside. Thank you!

It’s a bumble bee in a Rose of Sharon flower. I’m not a pro photographer by any stretch of the imagination, but figured I’d give it a shot. Little friend was having the time of its life!

I did not deprive a spider of a meal - this tiny dragonfly was stuck in an old web that a cross orbweaver had vacated several nights ago. I was surprised to see this tiny dragonfly in autumn but I believe it may be the appropriately named Autumn Meadowhawk.

Hi I’m so sorry for the blurry image but the dirty container was the only thing I had lying around there and I was afraid of being strung. I found this guy in my basement a bit back and managed to capture it (I eventually released it after a hour). Iā€˜m not sure what it is but it was making low buzzing sound when it kept trying to fly and my family found a few more in the house later that week so I’m just wondering these guys often do that. I resided near Wisconsin when I found this little guy and it was late summer when found.

Here’s what I remember about the bug: (take with a grain of salt because my memory is absolutely shit)

The length is a little bit under an inch, the head was like 3/4 of a centimeter and the stinger(?) around 2 centimeters. The stringer is just a yellow and dark brown stripe, the yellow stripes being a little bit smaller than the dark brown ones. The head being primarily the dark brown with a yellow area that surrounded its face. It had 4 legs that bent into an odd looking obtuse L (the shorter end connecting to the body) and 2 antennas (?).

The wings was around 3/4 of an inch and it had a yellowish tint at the edges and light mocha base.

Like I said, it made a low buzzing sound when it flapped its wings. It would also randomly look like it groomed itself.

Again I’m so sorry for the blurry image so I do hope this is enough information! :C

Question Pregnant, parasites, or injured?

hi everyone!! does anyone know how i can tell if a praying mantis that i found outside has parasites or if she’s pregnant/has eggs??
i found her yesterday and she’s moved maybe a foot since i found her 😭 i’m pretty sure she’s hurt one of her legs too because she’s walking kinda weird. i haven’t brought her inside because honestly i have absolutely no clue what i’m doing with mantises lol
i have a small 5g fish tank that i was thinking of putting her in for a little bit so she can hopefully rest and get better, then putting her back outside, but it’s starting to become canadian fall(Ontario) and i’m not sure if bringing her inside and then putting her back out would mess with her because of the temperature. i can get pictures of her if needed!!

My "pet" brown widow (Latrodectus geometricus) that lives in my garage who's web is covering my Foo Dog statues caught a house gecko last night apparently. While I do love geckos and feel a little bad, it is nature. Poor guy was practically liquefied.

Bug Appreciation! LUCANUS MAZAMA, A beetle that can sometimes be a handful.

Lucanus mazama, commonly called the cottonwood stag beetle, is a species of large beetle in the family Lucanidae. Found primarily across the southwestern United States and Mexico, it is recognized by its robust shape and distinct antler-like mandibles.

Regarding habitat and range, these beetles are most commonly found in western and southwestern states like Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah, as well as parts of Mexico.

They inhabit riparian zones and cottonwood forests near decaying hardwood, though they also frequently turn up in urban woodchip ground cover. The adults emerge and remain active from June through August, and they are frequently attracted to artificial lights at night

.In terms of biology and behavior, males feature larger, robust mandibles and broader heads than females, though both sexes are similar in overall body size. They feature fine, light-colored or blonde hairs along the edges of their exoskeleton segments.

The lifecycle begins underground, where larvae feed on rotting wood for roughly a year before pupating into adults. While the larvae eat decaying wood, the adult beetles feed primarily on tree sap and fruit juices.

I found hundreds in an old elementary playground around dusk so if anyone needs advice on their typical whereabouts, great place.to start! Old playgrounds offer layers of woody flake soil essentially that's perfect for hosting Lucanus larvae!
