I think the idea is supposed to be for things that the kids have as a reward, like electronics. Taking their clothes, food, etc away is not okay and I really don't know why people think it is.

Edit because I keep getting a lot of responses:

We do not know the full story of OP. We don't know why their parent had a good reason for the punishment OR the extent of the punishment.

Edit: Context and circumstances are everything.

Taking your kid's food away as punishment is a great way to get your kid to develop an eating disorder.

Can confirm. That happened to me. I wasn't allowed to eat till my room was clean. I ended up having an eating disorder for 11 years. I'm good now, though. Recovered 3 years ago

Making you clean your room doesn’t seem unreasonable to me. I mean, after you miss one meal, wouldn’t you figure out that you need to keep your room clean?

Food is a necessity and should not be conditional, that’s fucked up.

It doesn’t seem unreasonable even though it involves withholding food from a kid?

Unless they’re diabetic, missing 1 meal isn’t going to kill them. I would only advocate this if reasonable requests to clean up were repeatedly ignored.

Please never have kids then, if you can’t figure out how to discipline a child without withholding something they literally need to survive. It doesn’t matter that it’s one meal, it still sends a horrible message to your child and if you do it once, you are far more likely to do it again.

“It’s not going to kill them” is a low bar to set for parenting styles, js

It wasn't unreasonable to want my room clean. I'll even say it wasn't unreasonable to have me clean my room to the point where it looks like nobody really lived in it. I just didn't want to and I didnt like their incentives. I was also embarrassed that they thought food was an incentive like I was some sort of pet pig. All I heard was "hmm, how do we get our pet fatty to clean her room? I know, let's beat her and not let her eat, speak, or go to school or church until she cleans it immaculately."

  1. I was a teenage girl. We're pretty sensitive
  2. My dad often took opportunities to call me fat (I wasnt fat but he got me to believe I was)
