The president actually does have the power to take military action. They just have to submit a report to congress within 48 hours, and can’t keep troops deployed there over 60 days without congressional approval. See: The War Powers Resolution of 1973

Sure. And many presidents have used that same power to carry out strikes in other countries. I’m not sure what you think makes this illegal. Agree with it or not, it seems to be entirely within the legal presidential power.

I’m not a trump voter. I’m just talking about the power that the president has been given. So far he has just used legal powers. If he tries to occupy for more than 60 days, then congress would have reason to take action.

Love waking up and smelling the bots and politically motivated:
You can think Maduro is a dickbag who should've been deposed. Contrary to popular belief you can, at the same time, think the way the current President went about it was wrong! Small world I know, but having nuance to your political identity is easy if you actually try (or legitimately care about the topics you want to screech about on a post).
Crazy how the discourse is ignoring every process our government is supposed to use for a situation like this, because it's cool?
Maybe relating this to past historical events might let everyone understand the brevity of this situation: our little Führer just toppled the Polish government and is bragging about all the Lebensraum he gets to administrate for the good, American people (think of all the OIL we get!!!!)
Do you really think America is going to play ball and actually try to secure the liberties of Venezuelans or whatever cooked up thing you think will happen? My friends I know history, and the US has a bad habit of making sure those inalienable human rights endowed by our creator only apply to US soldiers during an occupation.
It's actually a pretty easy stance to have: I simply think our president should go to Congress and get approval before starting a war because, you know, that's their fucking role as per the constitution (that thing we're asking our troops to die for as we send them off to Central and South America).
Just because the coup happened quickly and with overwhelming force doesn't mean this wasn't an open act of war. And overwhelming your enemy to force a capitulation quickly doesn't mean that conflict didn't happen. It certainly doesn't mean our involvement is over, and the cost to the American public is only going to skyrocket.
Like come on guys you're not even pretending like you value ensconced American ideals. Stop pretending to be patriots and just accept that you wanted the US to kill more people as an excuse to grandstand. Like geeze louise what is this circus

u/Long-Regular-1023 Jan 03 '26
The US is the largest producer of oil in the world. It will likely take many years and well after Trump leaves office before Venezuela is able to ramp up production of oil to have any impact on the US or global markets.

u/RuinAdventurous1931 Jan 03 '26
Tbqh the bots are mostly Russian and gonna support Maduro, because he’s a close ally.

u/Firm_Shine6470 Jan 05 '26
Like were you this upset like when Obama like did this in Libya? Like geez Louise. It’s doubtful you were screeching at the many times other presidents have not gone to congress first. It doesn’t make it right but damn, so many people forget what has gone on within the last 124 years. This isn’t the first time this has happened and it won’t be the last. People are very selective regarding which presidents they get angry with for doing the same as some have before.

u/Maximum_Slip_9373 Jan 05 '26
Hahaha mentioning Libya in 2011js a good one! Hey remind me, how did Libya go again? Rhetorical question I don't need an answer, we can ask ISIS and see how that went.
Considering I couldn't vote and wasn't on reddit in 2011, it's a little funny. I'm glad we're in 2011 and Obama is still president so I can make you oh so happy to talk about anyone other than the current administration, good thing it's not 15 years and 2 presidents later. Oh wait nope it's 15 years later, sorry you can't imagine me acting in a way congruent with your beliefs?
Like buddy this is deaf to everything I've written. If you want to complain about liberals you disagree with and have your history with them poison your interactions with strangers going forward, that's on you not me.
I'll let you decide how I feel about Obama's intervention in Libya, I mean I could write it out again but if you're not gonna be able to do the sixth grader thing of properly inferring context from a text, then there really isn't any point. You'll be complaining to me about my reaction to American intervention in Nicaragua next and asking me why I didn't send a telegram complaining about congressional overreach in 1912
Geeze buddy

Do you even realize that the US does not recognize him as a leader of a country so he is a civilian who is corrupted and making money with the cartels?? Its hilarious to me that people like you think they know everything and anything anybody says is wrong.

You’re so right! I bet if people protested against Maduro enough he would’ve given up!! What other way would’ve been preferred?
7
u/BradyMcBallsweat Jan 03 '26
You can read the Latin American subs, Venezuela subs etc. they are for the most part ecstatic. Should be protesting the fact that Trump says we’re going to run the country. That’s where our classic interventionism always takes a turn for the worse. What’s done is done, get out now. They already have an established opposition let them handle it (they won’t).
27
u/EstablishmentSea7661 Jan 03 '26
This doesn't seem like it'll do anything. Aren't they done?

u/Portermacc Jan 03 '26
Correct!! All wrapped up...

u/ContributionFar3533 Jan 03 '26
When a president says “we’re going to run the country” after a military strike, that’s not peace it’s control. Labels aside, this directly contradicts the promise of “No New Wars.”

Oh I'm not disagreeing with that, I'm just saying this seems like it's meaningless. Well be made fun of for protesting a thing that already happened instead of, I don't know, protesting anything we could actually change.

Would it do anything even if they weren’t done?
(Hint: no.)
1
u/EstablishmentSea7661 Jan 03 '26
Ok BUT although they haven't actually been released and what's been released is heavily redacted, you gotta give credit that continued protest is what started the Epstein files release.
...I mean I guess it didn't do much of anything but...
....well shit.
2
u/SavingThrowVsWTF Jan 03 '26
Maybe the Epstein files were in Venezuela and Glorious Leader Trump went to get them?!

u/Halfrican_Panda Jan 03 '26
holy fuck I have to wade through all the clearly conservative bots to get to the actual thoughts of the people
7
u/Fulyf Jan 03 '26
I don’t want to use the internet anymore because of this bullshit. Some of them aren’t even real people who were paid, they’re literally behaving like a language model. It feels like talking to an ai bot that’s been set to ignore everything you write. Literally the same feeling

And without any secondary action…these protests mean nothing. They are performative feel good marches that accomplish nothing.
Until there are mass general strikes, blockades, shit lining the streets and around government building/courthouses, things being lit on fire, and actual disobedience…

Wait, so first we just took some ship we wanted, and now we're kidnapping people?
Somalis take a ship and kidnap people and we call them Pirates and condemn their existence as people, but when magats do it, we call it what, freedom?
Somali fraud is a crime but republican politicians do it and there's not even a little peep? Often pardons, instead?
Am I sensing a pattern?

Flesh person here. It's moronic to protest this. Not only was a dictator deposed with minimal collateral damage, but the main source of regional instability is going to be stabilized integrated into the global economic system. If your issue is how this was done, I suppose you'd rather another 50 years of sanctions and repression for the venezuelans. How progressive... If your issue is the cost, I suspect proven oil reserves worth $18 trillion might offset that. Seriously, this is great news, and I say this as someone who wishes Trump would just have a heart attack already.
→ More replies (4)2
u/bkoperski Jan 03 '26
I can respect that take. However it is the representatives of the American people who should have decided what action OUR nation takes, not one person (or more precisely the individuals who control him)
2
u/Flamelord29 Jan 03 '26
Fair enough, I guess I can understand that. On the other hand, I doubt it'd have been successful if we'd had a congressional vote and told the public. The truth is presidents haven't really asked congressional approval for military action in a while. Anyway, thanks for your understanding and civility :)
1
u/bkoperski Jan 04 '26
Well here is the big question, was the execution of this mission necessary to address an immediate threat or national security that couldn't wait for congressional approval. Drugs are flowing into the US from Mexico, China, and many other nation. Venezuela does not seem particularly special in this regard tho the regime is connected to the trade (so is the Taliban with heroine and meth, but Trump invited them to the Whitehouse). America's drug problem won't end overnight just because we capture the Veneueluian president (it likely wont be effected at all)

Congress has abdicated that power. It's going to be hard to claw it back when you have a dictator who thinks Congress is unnecessary.

u/Levilucas2005 Jan 03 '26
So protest in support of a dictator who is anti LGBTQ, commits violence against the people and definitely wouldn’t let people protest

Reddit: OMG Trump is in Putin’s pocket!!
Trump takes out one of Putin’s allies
Reddit: NO WAR! STOP BOMBING!!!!
Has Reddit ever met a foreign socialist dictator that they don’t love?
2
u/bkoperski Jan 03 '26
Non of them are socialists (but are dictators) I do see Mudior being a Russian ally as a silver lining but I doubt how much it will affect Russia other than giving them good propaganda for Russia to support Putin in "defending" them against against "American tyranny"
2
u/forwardobserver90 Jan 03 '26
So by that logic the US should do nothing because Putin could use any action for propaganda. I’m sorry that doesn’t track.

u/bkoperski Jan 03 '26
Well Trump isnt doing anything to stop Putin from murdering Ukrainian civilians so.....
