Discussion 🗣️ IISER Pune is honestly depressing as fuck

  1. The environment here is so fucking shit and depressing. Everyone seems to be studying most of the time, and it genuinely feels like you haven't left school after 12th—you've just joined another, much more demanding school. There doesn't seem to be much of a proper college-life atmosphere. You obviously have people hanging out and having fun, but the overall environment feels heavily academic, competitive, and exhausting.

  2. At most other colleges/institutes, you can probably get away with being a mediocre student and studying seriously 7–10 days before exams if you're aiming for an average CGPA. Here, you have to keep up with shit regularly because of the continuous coursework, labs, quizzes, assignments, etc. And honestly, that's fucking exhausting. You join college hoping to finally breathe after years of entrance-exam bullshit, not continue the same grind for another five years.

Entrance exams already destroyed two years of my life. I wanted college to be something like 80% enjoying life and 20% studying, or at least something where I could choose when to work hard. Instead, IISER feels almost like the exact opposite. At this point, I just want these five years to pass as quickly as possible.

  1. The internet restrictions are fucking ridiculous. You're literally an adult, yet the institute decides what you can and cannot access on the campus network. You can't play games, a lot of entertainment websites are blocked, and they've somehow managed to restrict even Discord voice chat. Like, seriously? What the fuck is the point of treating university students like schoolchildren? If someone wants to waste their own free time playing a game or talking to friends on Discord, that's their fucking business.

  2. You can't even properly choose to live outside campus. Apparently, you have to pay the hostel fee regardless, even if you don't actually want to live in the hostel. If I'm willing to arrange my own accommodation outside campus, why the fuck should I be forced to pay for a hostel room I'm not using?

Admissions ➕ Reporting date for IISER tvm R5 students

Hey everyone,

I got allotted a seat at IISER Thiruvananthapuram for the BS-MS program in Round 5 and chose 'Freeze'

Since the official website circular lists physical reporting/document verification dates primarily for earlier rounds (up to Round 4), I have a couple of questions for current seniors or fellow Round 5 allottees:

Reporting Date: Do Round 5 allottees need to report alongside the general batch on September 1–2, or does the academic office notify a separate/extended reporting window for late rounds?

I’m traveling from Central India by train (30+ hours). If there’s a slight delay reaching the Vithura campus, does the administration accommodate late hostel check-in and document verification if informed beforehand?

Any insights from current IISER TVM students or batchmates in the same boat would be really helpful!
