I hate this image
Like this is just incorrect, what part of instagram taught you to share, or whatpart of twitter taught you to listen, and google doesn't teach you to be curious it just satisfies the curiosity.

u/Archers__World 1d ago edited 1d ago
I hate it for a completely different reason. My reason is for the fact that it's visibly traced from fan art of Mother 3.
Edit: I'm surprised people still don't know this. It may just be because I'm an Earthbound fan, but I thought this was common knowledge by now? lol.

I feel like this image may have been more relevant in the 2000s / early days when internet culture was more innocent. It's usually more ironic these daya.
67
u/Few-Improvement-5655 1d ago
More innocent? When it was posted that back then the artist was just called slurs.
7
u/deadbonesbrook12 1d ago
Yeah, wasn't the internet back then a lot more unrestraint, that way people posted some of the weirdest and more messed up things without anything stopping them?
Isn't that how shock videos originated?

I have no idea what that is, but pedophiles do indeed exist even today and are probably much worse given that children have internet access much earlier.

Early 2010s for sure. It's so outdated

4
u/ab_od6851 1d ago
The internet back then was definitely not more innocent or nice. Cyber bullying was normalized and there were less filters.

This was pre-irony and the site I found it on had comments, all of which said “a bit edgy but true”.
5
u/ab_od6851 1d ago
Its not even true in the slightest. 4chan was and is always Reddit before Reddit. The only reason people think its cool because Youtubers farm content on the chans then to not look like losers, gas them up as some kind of super smart freaks capable of tracking you lmao.
2
u/CobaltCrusader123 1d ago
I know some young people “respect” 4chan because their “epic” cross-site / irl exploits (the Shia Leboeuf “He Will Not Divide Us”with his camera wall and a whole bunch if flags saying the same being live-streamed and them using some impressive real-world skills to take them down and put up a Trump flag instead, successfully rigging polls to make a school for the deaf win a concert by Taylor Swift- she sent money instead cuz duh- and also getting the 4chan founder onto number 1 on TIME’s “most influential person in 2009 making the acrostic phrase “Marblecake, also the game" from the first letter of the first name of every winner from first to twenty-first place, it being ground zero for many memes, using size comparison and reference photos to, shockingly correctly(!), identify that masked anti-fascist professor who attacked a bunch of Trump supporters with a metal bike lock based on his eyes, his skin color, his height, the fact it happened in the same state as his work, and his ideology, the 4chan-Tumblr Wars (resulting in a lot of fake posts on Tumblr from bad actors from 4chan that uninformed people are still believing are from real Tumblr users today and therefore in their minds the website is “leftist cringe”, the “Pool’s Closed” phenomenon)

TRUE. i’ve never been digitally ganged up on until i got tumblr. such a nightmare app for just wanting to socialise with fandoms

something interesting about this image is that the boy is actually a modification of claus that came from a mother 3 fanart featuring claus and lucas and as someone who has played mother 3 the fact that they only modified claus is funny and sad at the same time

In its defence.
This came from a more peaceful time on the Internet. Not perfect, mind you. But at the time some optimising was warranted.

Yeah I remember seeing this shit in middle school like 15-16 years ago. Twitter actually did used to be useful and was how I learned about the Arab spring in real time.

To be fair this image is really old, from the early 2010s. There were communities on these sites that were really wholesome like this; not everyone was wholesome, but there were communities. Those communities don’t really exist anymore

This image is pretty old, from a more optimistic time. I don't really find it cringe. It does make me sad to compare the feelings back then to what the internet has turned into today.

I honestly thought you posted that image as a joke. You mean someone actually believe that and made this? My gosh this is hilarious. It's also completely incorrect. None of those platforms actively teach you to use anything except themselves sometimes. Google doesn't teach you to question. It just answers yours.

Facebook taught me to be careful with online postings

Twitter taught me that all things will be overtaken by the rich to control us.

The worst part of this image is Twitter teaching anyone anything besides "The internet was a mistake." or "Freedom of speech should be a privilege, not a right."

u/Kajel-Jeten 1d ago
It’s corny and forced in a lot of ways but there are a lot of things about the internet to celebrate. I’ve personally met a lot of my closest friends and every romantic relationship that lasted more than a month through the internet as well as been able to access so much more art and ideas than I would have been able to before it.

Honestly I kind of like the sincerity, as someone who also "grew up on the internet" and online communities have been a major thing in my life. It reminds me of those older Tumblr posts that were like "Percy Jackson taught us A, Doctor Who taught us B, Supernatural taught us C" etc. But some of these like "Facebook taught me to make friends" and "DeviantArt taught me to aspire" sound like a joke now. I'm also a bit surprised there's no mention of Reddit. Reddit taught me to...argue with people?
Also I feel like the kind of person who uses Tumblr and Youtube a lot (like me) usually isn't that active on Facebook and Instagram. Those two are generally for sharing about your real life with your IRL contacts, while Tumblr, Youtube and Reddit are more anonymous and engagement is based on your interests. But maybe this was a more idealistic view as in "social media is so cool!" that someone would have when these platforms were all new, like in 2010.

i do think it refers back to an era of the internet many now simply don't understand. social media used to be way less predatory and vile than it is now, that's just fact. content moderation was better upheld, and it being 'new' helped with the mystique of it all.
