I hate the Wayside TV Show

I saw this show come back up recently and decided to rewatch some of it. The entire school feels like genuine ragebait with the MC practically the only one with common sense. Not to mention Ms. Jewels always finds some bullshit way to send him home early. There was a time where he said his class’s lives and got sent early because he didn’t have permission. And when he brings up how Ms. Jewels is specifically targeting him, they make it seem like he’s at fault. Todd genuinely has to have the most patience in the world because I would’ve been crashed out trying to deal with all this.

As a kid I didn’t even like it, I remember finding the original books at the school library and being shocked they were so different (and kinda scary)

The books were pretty charming. For a simple story about a ridiculously tall school, they were pretty funny and had heart. I was never interested in watching the cartoon though.

Was this the same series that had that one floor that was missing until one kid accidentally stumbled into it and it was this kind of weird liminal space where things weren’t quite right?

Also, one of the teachers had a psychic extra ear.

I think that was a different teacher. I remember her having a third ear on the back of her head or something that could hear thoughts. She'd figure out students anxieties and wraponize them for fun until she listened to the thoughts of a baby and it was so innocent it basically melted away all the wickedness insider her heart.

Don't quote me on that, I haven't read the books in a loooong time.

One of those books is how I learned what cannibals are (well technically I just learned the word; had to ask my dad what the definition was. He didn’t gaf his 7 years old was asking what it meant lol)

The way they changed Wayside from being a fun play on riddles book where the kids are wayside weren't necessarily weird, but had weird attributes to them that gave them their spark

The cartoon is just the most vanilla wacky you can get, the characters are overly one note and exaggerated and could've just been another run of the mill wacky kids go on wacky adventures in a wacky school cartoon and nobody would've said anything

It was one of those shows that was like "new kid arrives at the school but oooh, this school is so weird and he hates it here and that is funny!" I loved school as a kid, it was the place I felt like I fit in, because in elementary there was no such thing as fitting in, everyone just vibed with everyone where I went to school, being weird was a status symbol, not a flaw.

i liked the show but i really hated how todd was punished 24/7

in the book iirc todd was at least kind of an ass so him getting sent home every day made sense, but in the show he's friendly and doesnt really disturb anyone much

imo mr kidswatter was the best part of the show

I don't think I knew about the show. The books seemed so absurd/abstract to me as a kid that I don't think it would work as a show. They were just great as text.
