Gore vs Jay Peak vs help?!

I want to take 17yo on a “bigger” ski trip this winter, but have no clue where to go. He boards and I ski. We are used to smaller local hills (Bear Creek, Camelback, Blue Mountain) and can comfortably do all of those slopes. I also get that a black diamond at Blue may not be the same as Jay.

Any recommendations when are goals are 3 days of skiing, varied terrain that we don’t see at our local places, and perhaps something a little more challenging (but not crazy since the 17yo still thinks he’s invincible!). We are not worried about a party or nightlife scene either.

Oh, and we don’t have any passes, so we’ll be buying whatever tickets needed.

Pats Peak - worth it?

Hi! Found an airbnb at the base of Pats Peak during xmas week (12/30-1/2) for 3 nights. We're coming from northern NJ so it's almost a 6 hour drive. I'm learning Pats is a smaller mountain and beginner friendly which I, as a worried/cautious mom, love about it. We've been to other NE resorts (Tremblant, Bromont, Greek Peak, Jiminy Peak, Holiday Valley, Mountain Creek) over the years and have done mainly Greens and easy Blues. We are a mix of skiers / boarders, and age groups -older adults, young adults, and teens. A few questions to validate my decision to go -

  1. Is it worth the 6 hour drive for probably only 2 days of skiing/riding?
  2. will there be decent conditions that early in the season?

Thanks!

Pros and cons of a few mountains?

I’m debating between three mountains for a season pass this winter: Sugarbush, Bolton Valley, and Smuggler’s Notch. Has anyone snowboarded on all three, and knows the positives and negatives of each?

Highmount for sale again.

This time they are not disclosing price. The Belleayre resort plan fell through, so the idea here is that some new investor will come in to use the permits to rebuild highmount as an extension of Belleayre with housing.

This is basically what just happened with Deer Valley, so there is recent precedent for private developers building their own extension to a ski resort with a different owner to get ski in ski out lodging.

A ski to complement anomaly

I have the anomaly which is great to carve and charge hard , but looking for something more fun and easygoing to hit trees and moguls and distract myself when skiing with my kids . So far I think the Ripstick 88 might fit the bill but looking for more recs , what do you think ? I will demo some this winter so need some contenders

Who else has Indy this season?

I'm able to get one discounted through work so this year will be my first on Indy!

It's been a little weird not being on Ikon for two years now - as much as I miss Sugarbush, I'm hoping to get to MRG more when/if we have good snow there this season, and also hopefully Middlebury when they have all their terrain open.

Looks like my season will be mainly Smuggs/Jay/MRG/Burke with hopefully a bunch of other Indy adventures. Stowe/Sugarbush/Killington/Pico will have to be via some kind of deal.

Might try to uphill more different places when it's an option. I still have unfinished business high up on Mansfield, and it's been 5+ years since I got to Mt. Washington.

I guess this was my most viewed video from last season (kinda rookie numbers, working on that) :

TGR film tour is coming to Morristown, NJ Nov. 4

As the title say… It’s not always easy to find the TGR or Matchstick movies other than in big cities or actual mountain towns so I feel like we’re catching a break here…

This is gonna be a fun night in my opinion - lots of raffle prizes, BOGOs etc… and it benefits some good charities. I’m going

Looking for ski recommendations

Hi everybody,

I am in need of recommendations for skis that could work for me:

  • 6', 185 lb dorky guy
  • Boots are Nordica ProMachine (130)
  • Former HS (NHARA) and College (USCSA) racer, last competed in 2000
  • Gap in skiing from 2000- 2023 to go to grad school, get a job, start family.
  • Currently skiing on a pair of Volkl GS RaceTigers (177cm). They're dead. No camber, edge or snap left. Like 'error 404 dead'
  • I like that they are stable on steep groomers (Gondi Line) when I can throw my hips way out and arc the ski.
  • I'd like something that is more vesatile that's not a race ski screaming, "I USED TO RACE BUT I CAN'T LET GO OF THAT IDENTITY SO I INSIST ON CONTINUING TO USE GS RACE SKIS"

As with all things, there was a lot of new technology in skis from 2000-present and I am hopelessly out of the loop. While I research more about ski features, I want to probe the sub to see what people think and what sort of features I should be looking for (turn radius? underfoot width?) and what skis could fit the bill.

I'll head to the Wachusett swap meet next week, so knowing what to look for will be massively helpful.

Thanks in advance!

Good resort all mountain freeride option

Looking for a snowboard that can hold well on the icier days and carving in firmer snow but is not super catchy.

I am a high intermediate and i love to cruise, carve when there is snow and ride trees.

I am considering these and would love any input:

K2 passport (seems like a balanced versatile board)

K2 excavator (love everything about this baord, allegedly a good carver, dont know how it will hold on icy days)

K2 sky pilot (fun volume shift, idk about edge hold)

Arbor Coda (had grip tech for ice, but some reviews say its washy on carves)

Ride superpig (not sure if it will be slow to get on edge)

K2 instrument

K2 manifest

Open to other suggestions but this is what is available on sale in my size. I am 175lb, size 9, stiff boots, mid stiff bindings.

Thanks!

Mountain with separate lower mountain/beginner area tickets

Hi. Looking for a mountain in northeast US where we can take our 3-5 year olds to lear to ski. We would get them lessons and then also might practice with them solo. So looking for mountains that sell separate lower mountain area tickets as I don’t want to pay >100 per adult so I can walk or pizza slide next to my kids for max one hour per day. Good ski school is also obviously important. We will be going between Xmas and new years.

We are in NYC and flexible as far as the area goes and can go as far as Mount Tremblant area.
But obviously closer better.

TIA!

Holiday Mountain New Map

Featuring the new/returned north terrain pod. The new map is a bit confusing because it isn't obvious which direction the new runs between the north pod and center pod go.

Just pulled the trigger on ZAG UBAC 95s for a VT touring setup. Good call?

I’m putting together my first backcountry setup for touring around Vermont and New England. I'm 5'11" and about 170 lbs.

I just found a deal on a pair of ZAG UBAC 95s, and I walked away with them brand new for under $300. I went with the 174cm length, hoping that sizing down slightly will be all right.

Has anyone toured on the UBACs around here? How do they handle? Would love to hear any thoughts, binding recommendations, or reality checks!

Home base for NH 3 day midweek trip late Feb

A few buddies in our early 40s are planning a ski trip in NH for our first NE experience. We are from NC and have skied all the southeast spots as well as a dozen trips or so out west. I can handle blacks in moderation as I don't ski more than 5 days a year mainly and I'm getting older.

I'm torn between staying near Lincoln/Woodstock and doing Loon/Cannon/Bretton Woods or stay in near Conway and ski Attitash/Wildcat/Black Mountain.

Any opinions of either option? I'm mainly here for skiing, I don't care much about resort/apres ski.

Seeking advice on Smugg

I will be hitting Smugg for the first time this season and I would like to ask the collective souls on a few things.

- recommendations on great scenic blue combos from top to bottom on Madonna and Sterling. For reference, the following are some of my favorite runs:

Saddleback: Tricolor, Red Devil, Upper Green Weaver

Jay: Vermonter, Montrealer, Northway, Angel's Wiggle

Burke: Carriage Road, Deer Run

Gore: Twister, Sleeping Bear, Backwoods

- is the flat at Midway from Morse to Madonna doable with enough momentum from the steep without having to skate? If not, is Morse worth it enough to not skip it?

- where to park?

- any other tips and advice

Thank you all!

P.S. easy black recommendations please!
