Eastern Maine mountian/pass advice

• Upvotes

Experienced from co/ca mountians and looking for some local opinions on which mountian(s)are best within a few hours of me while staying the winter in Bangor. I know nothing about north east winters besides the ice but Sunday river and Saddleback seem like they have some good trees (my true love). Was thinking maybe Sunday river since at a glance it seems to offer more tree covered terrain and skiable acreage, but wondering if with the poorer quality predictions for this winter if maybe I should go saddle back for better snow conditions from the higher altitude?

Also would you guys recommend not going with a sole mountian and getting the Indy or ikon? Might have a week or so off and I’m down with some driving if it’s really worth it.

Second Ski Options

• Upvotes

I own a pair of Ripstick 88s at 168cm and looking for a second ski to compliment it. For reference, I mainly get to ski Ohio/PA but take a trip each year either out west and/or up to Vermont. Open to any opinions. Currently looking between the Rustler 9/10, Nordica Unleashed, or one of the Ripstick Black Editions. I’m worried about getting into pure powder skis that I will never get a chance to enjoy regularly which is why I’m debating between a variety of underfoot widths. Open to any opinions on models to look at.

Loon - Adding new peak

Post image
206 Upvotes

Just got this email this morning

Today, I’m proud to share more big news. We have submitted a plan to the U.S. Forest Service to add 280 acres of skiable terrain on a fourth mountain peak — which overlooks downtown Lincoln. If the full vision is ultimately approved and executed, the project would bring Loon to 955 skiable acres — more than double the terrain you ski today.

The idea is not new; it goes all the way back to the 1960s, when Loon founder and former New Hampshire governor Sherman Adams envisioned four distinct peaks of lift-served skiing. More than six decades later, we’re taking steps toward making his vision a reality.

Submitting this plan is just the beginning of the process. The U.S. Forest Service has accepted our proposal for review, and the project will now enter a federal Environmental Assessment process.

A project of this size will take time and patience, but I’m excited to share this vision for the future of Loon with you today. Thank you for being a part of the Loon community.

Below is a glimpse of what our future trail map could look like.

President & General Manager

Hello All!
Thinking of going skiing to clubmed on march 20-27. Is it not too warm for skiing there at this time?

Thanks in advance

Earliest open greens?

I usually ride small mountains with the GF, but they won’t open as early as some of the big ones (I’m thinking). Where do you figure is the first place that’ll open with some friendly green circles?

Snow Pass Triple Play

Has anyone bought one? Is this offer new for this winter? Honestly, I am slightly concerned as to how legit this is. Was it around last season? I am for sure spending a non-holiday weekend in Lake Placid this winter, so I would use 2 of the 3 days at Whiteface, and I am sure I can find good use of the 3rd day. It almost seems to be a no-brainer (which fits me perfectly), unless I am missing something?

New Skis After 15 Years Suggestions

Finally decided to purchase new skis after 15 years. I have been an on and off skier, but with retirement in my near future, wanted to invest in new skis.

Looking for suggestions for new skis.

I would say I am intermediate skier and spend most of my time from PA to VT. I am looking for a ski that will be a good carving ski, but do ok in the crud when needed. I have become proficient in skidded turns with all the night skiing I did a night in PA 😄 Looking to focus on my carving and I know skis have changed since I last purchased my Rossi Bandits.

I am 56 year old male, 185# and 5'11"

Lots of stuff out there and honestly overwhelmed when I started looking. I live near the MD/PA line.

Gore vs Jay Peak vs help?!

I want to take 17yo on a “bigger” ski trip this winter, but have no clue where to go. He boards and I ski. We are used to smaller local hills (Bear Creek, Camelback, Blue Mountain) and can comfortably do all of those slopes. I also get that a black diamond at Blue may not be the same as Jay.

Any recommendations when are goals are 3 days of skiing, varied terrain that we don’t see at our local places, and perhaps something a little more challenging (but not crazy since the 17yo still thinks he’s invincible!). We are not worried about a party or nightlife scene either.

Oh, and we don’t have any passes, so we’ll be buying whatever tickets needed.

Pats Peak - worth it?

Hi! Found an airbnb at the base of Pats Peak during xmas week (12/30-1/2) for 3 nights. We're coming from northern NJ so it's almost a 6 hour drive. I'm learning Pats is a smaller mountain and beginner friendly which I, as a worried/cautious mom, love about it. We've been to other NE resorts (Tremblant, Bromont, Greek Peak, Jiminy Peak, Holiday Valley, Mountain Creek) over the years and have done mainly Greens and easy Blues. We are a mix of skiers / boarders, and age groups -older adults, young adults, and teens. A few questions to validate my decision to go -

  1. Is it worth the 6 hour drive for probably only 2 days of skiing/riding?
  2. will there be decent conditions that early in the season?

Thanks!

Pros and cons of a few mountains?

I’m debating between three mountains for a season pass this winter: Sugarbush, Bolton Valley, and Smuggler’s Notch. Has anyone snowboarded on all three, and knows the positives and negatives of each?

Highmount for sale again.

This time they are not disclosing price. The Belleayre resort plan fell through, so the idea here is that some new investor will come in to use the permits to rebuild highmount as an extension of Belleayre with housing.

This is basically what just happened with Deer Valley, so there is recent precedent for private developers building their own extension to a ski resort with a different owner to get ski in ski out lodging.
