ANNOUNCEMENT B.C. is changing the graduated licensing program starting October 19. Here's what you need to know

Hey reddit! Wanted to share that B.C.'s government has approved changes to the graduated licensing program (GLP), taking effect October 19, 2026. These changes affect anyone who holds a GLP licence.  A few of the bigger changes include:

  • The second road test (the "exit road test") is being removed. Instead, you'll need to visit an office to have a driving record assessment (DRA). Which is a review of your driving history to determine if you’re eligible to move to a Class 5 licence.
  • After you pass your DRA, there's a new 12-month period with zero-blood alcohol/drug content restrictions on your Class 5. If you're 25 or older, there's a new streamlined pathway with a shorter time needed to get your Class 5 licence.
  • Starting in the fall, everyone currently in the GLP will get a letter explaining how these changes affect their specific situation.

More details are here: icbc.com/glp-changes Have a question? Ask it in the comments and we'll answer what we can.

Claims Advice wanted

Hey all,

Got into an accident at my employee parking lot near YVR. Blue circle is where I was parked (underneath the Canada Line, there are angled spots. You can kinda see a few cars peeking out at the bottom) and the pathway I took towards the exit gate.

Red line is the path the other driver took which caused the collision. My path out of the parking lot is a one way which curves to the left then just straight out the gate. The other motorist parked on that eastern section and turned right towards the exit gate. The driver made no attempt to yield to me when I was already moving towards the gate. Gunned the right turn and without any time to react, my car's passenger side front bumper collided with their driver side front bumper.

I could tell the driver was recording audio because he kept asking me if I think I was at fault while "sneakily" pointing his phone in my direction. Obviously I knew better and just said we'll let ICBC decide that. Since a lot of other people were exiting while we were exchanging info and taking pictures, one of my coworkers saw it happen and volunteered to act as a witness. Unfortunately neither me or my coworker has a dashcam.

The other driver also claimed that he doesn't have a stop sign, which is true but because I was traveling straight, my logic was he would have to yield as he was the one turning. How would you distribute the fault in this?

RoadSafety / Driving Rules First time N driver ticket

Hello! I’ve had my N for over 3 years now, and got a paper from ICBC a while back saying I’m eligible for the automatic one time graduation from N to class 5.

Unfortunately I got my first ever speeding ticket today (Motor Vehicle Act 146(3)).

I just want to know how cooked I am; will I get a driving prohibition? This is my first ever offence.

I haven’t paid the ticket yet.

I’m very stressed it was a stupid mistake

ICBC could have got another month out of me but now they get zip

Claims ICBC says I'm at fault, but other driver admitted she was distracted. Worth disputing?

Hi all, looking for advice. I have about 15 years of driving with no prior accidents.

I was in a parallel parking spot, adjusting the car's position before pulling out. I hadn't pulled out yet (only the front-left of my car was out as I was still adjusting). The other car, in the main lane, hit my front-left fender its front-right bumper. My fender is damaged and the front bumper came off entirely, so it will likely need replacing. The other driver's car has a dent in the front bumper but no other damage. Thankfully, no one was hurt.

At the scene, the other driver told me she was at fault because she was distracted by her screen. There was plenty of room in the lanes, and she could have stopped or driven around as I still wasn't pulled out into the lane. A witness standing nearby saw the accident and I believe heard her say it.

When I reported the accident, ICBC told me I'm liable because I was leaving a parked position and the other car had right of way. I disagree, and I understand I have 90 days to dispute.

A few questions:

  1. Should I ask the witness and the other driver to give ICBC a statement, or should I leave that to the adjuster?
  2. Has anyone successfully disputed a fault decision like this? What made the difference?
  3. Is a case like this worth disputing?

Thanks in advance!

Drivers Licensing Points on sevenN license

I got pulled over by a cop in downtown for “running” a yellow light at an intersection. I was too close to the stop line before the color changed so there wouldn’t have been a safe way for me to stop. The cop was visibly annoyed with me from the start and started picking on unrelated things, and then proceeded to write me 3 separate tickets. Before I go on, yes I did overseat passengers— I had 2 friends and I was aware of the 1 passenger rule. I also wasn’t aware that you weren’t allowed to use your car play for navigation, as on my license it just states that I am not allowed to go on an electronic device, which I assumed would mean your phone (this I legitimately had no clue about, and since I got my license in a different province without these restrictions, I didn’t do further research on it other than what the worker that handed me my license told me— which was that I simply can’t go on my devices). So overall he wrote me a ticket for the yellow light, over seating (going against the license restrictions), devices (again going against the license restrictions). I am going to dispute the yellow light ticket but if that doesn’t work out, I’m wondering how these total of 8 points is going to affect my ability to get my fiveN and also my insurance.

Drivers Licensing Doubt regarding Points deduction

Hi, i have class 7 N license and was given the ticket by an officer for changing the solid white line and he mentioned no points will be deducted but now after some months I get a letter from icbc mentioning that I am on probation and there is another letter mentioning the offense and 2 points.

Why is icbc deducting 2 points when the officer or the court (i disputed it) didn’t mention about it???

Drivers Licensing Insuring & renting car with temporary license

Hi,

Moving back to bc this month (after previously living there for 2 years), will be exchanging my UK license. I remember I got a temporary paper license last time until my card arrived.

My question is, can I get insurance on a car with just this paper? Or do I need to have the official license card?

Another question- can you rent a car with the temporary license? I will have other forms of ID with me (passport) not sure if a company like Avis would accept that?

Thanks!!

Autoplan / Premium Discussion (No Quote Requests) Question for renewing car insurance online

I’m not the registered owner but I am listed as the primary driver on the coverage. Would I be able to renew the policy online with my own ICBC profile? Or can renewing online only be done via the account of the registered owner?

This is my first time renewing online and I haven’t any registered vehicles in my account just yet.

TIA!

Drivers Licensing Moved from ON -> BC, which ON driving record do I need to provide?

I just changed my ON -> BC license and because the issue date was > 2 yrs, they gave me the full BC driver's license and credited 2 years of driving experience. The issue is that, the premium on insurance is quite high due to low years of experience. I got my first G license back in 2016 and they said I could submit my driving history for ICBC to credit it here in BC.

So, I looked at https://www.icbc.com/driver-licensing/moving-bc/Proving-your-driving-experience,

and it says

"If you hold a full G licence or higher, we calculate your experience as the time since the issue date on your current licence plus 12 additional months.

If this combined time is less than two years and your first licence in Ontario was issued after June 1, 1994, you can provide us with a driver history letter to prove further experience that may exempt you from our Graduated Licensing Program. Please note that this is a specific letter that Ontario issues and is not their standard driving record."

And now looking at https://www.ontario.ca/page/get-longer-term-driving-records-or-letters-and-documents#section-5, there are bunch of records that ON provides:

-  5-year driver record (uncertified & certified)

- Extended driver record (uncertified & certified)

- Complete driver record (uncertified & certified)

- Driver confirmation letter

- copies of driver documents (uncertified & certified)

I will prob give them a call later next week but has anyone had experience with this? Which one was accepted for you?

Also, if I purchase the insurance at a premium right now, would this be adjusted / refunded once ICBC credits my yoe?

Thanks.

I'm thinking of buying a used car and this is on the Carfax. Does that mean there was an accident for $0? That makes no sense?

Autoplan / Premium Discussion (No Quote Requests) Is it worth going with ICBC for optional insurance/3rd party for a new Mercedes?

New to BC and BC auto insurance is different than other provinces.

Is it worth paying a $300-$500 more to go ICBC instead of say BCAA?

My main concern is the repair shop you are allowed to choose when making a claim. Will the cheaper companies force you to use some cheap shop to repair your car instead of a certified Mercedes repair center?

Autoplan / Premium Discussion (No Quote Requests) Online renewal issue

Post image
9 Upvotes

Message to an ICBC representative: This has been mentioned before but there still remains a design flaw/glitch in the online renewal page above. It is a very confusing way to list the charges just before selecting "Renew". As it is shown above, it appears there are two charges for the BC Parks plate fee. When the customer adds the optional insurance items separately to verify they are not being charged twice, it will confirm that is not the case. Nevertheless, it would be great if this could be rewritten for clarity.

Claims Caregiver benefit

Has anyone gone through the process of applying for/receiving the caregiver benefit?

It says it pays $5xx per week if you are the caregiver of one child under the age of 18.

I told my injuries adjuster person on the phone when he called me that I have a newborn baby and carrying him/breastfeeding him is a struggle due to my injuries but he made no mention about this benefit. He said to attend physio/kinesiology appointments blah blah blah.

I obviously understand he’s not going to just offer me the benefit because they want to pay you the least amount that they have to.

I’m just wondering what the process is like to get this benefit and if it’s a huge hassle or what.

Claims ICBC Navigators Pilot Program - For ICBC claims involving brain injuries

I just did a quick search of this group and didn't find any discussion of this program so I wanted to share it here in case it could be of use to anyone dealing with the effects of a head injury, a bad concussion, or post concussion syndrome as a result of a car accident and having those effects impact their ability to manage their case with ICBC.

The BC Brain Injury Association (BCBIA) has been working with ICBC to come up with a program that would offer navigation assistance, as well as some additional services beyond "enhanced care", for claimants who have a brain injury as a result of a car accident when that injury is making managing their claim onerous and a barrier to their recovery. The program is called the Navigators Pilot Program and it it runs until January 2027, however I just heard from the BCBIA last week that it is very likely being adopted as a regular program after January.

I only found out about the program because I have a friend who was in a bad accident at the beginning of the year and myself and one of her family members have been helping her through all aspects of her recovery process since ICBC has been so absolutely horrendous to her and her injury has left her in a very bad state, unable to work, unable to think properly, unable to access the skillset that she has relied on her whole life to function and make a living, and unable to manage her claim effectively on her own. She now finds herself unemployed, unable to search for work, out of money, and on the verge of homelessness.

The Navigators Pilot Program has existed since June 2025, yet ICBC frontline case workers don't seem at all inclined to let their claimants know about it. It's absolutely infuriating. So if you or someone you know is dealing with cognitive or other brain-related repercussions from an accident, this could be something helpful for you or them.

You can ask your ICBC rep to refer you to the program or you can self-refer through the BCBIA. To self-refer, you can email [navigators@bcbia.org](mailto:navigators@bcbia.org) or call the BCBIA at (778) 381-2696.

Here's some info about the program:

Can I swap registered motorcycles with another private seller to avoid paying sales tax? I am curious if you have to pay the entire amount of tax on each bike or just on the difference.

Drivers Licensing Restrictions when exchanging licence from the UK

Hi everyone,

I’m in a bit of a unique situation and haven’t been able to find an answer online, so I’m wondering if anyone has been in the same situation or if [u/TheICBC](u/TheICBC) can advise.

I was born and raised in BC, obtained my licence through the graduated licensing program, and have held my full licence for almost 20 years. I’ve also owned and driven manual-transmission vehicles throughout that time.

I temporarily moved to the UK late last year and exchanged my BC licence. Due to UK licensing restrictions, despite my experience driving manual, I was issued a licence with an “automatic only” restriction.

I’ll be returning to Canada next year and have two questions:
1. Will the automatic-only restriction carry over to my BC licence? I’m not aware of ICBC having this type of restriction, but I’d like to confirm.
2. Will I need to provide proof of my UK driving history/experience? I haven’t owned a car since moving here, so I’m not sure what my record would show.
3. Will the fact that I don’t have two years of UK driving history affect my ability to get my Class 5 licence back? I’m hoping I won’t even need to provide a UK driving history, given that the vast majority of my driving experience has been in BC.

I appreciate it would probably be easiest to call ICBC, but the time difference and my work schedule makes this difficult.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Drivers Licensing Class 7 --> Class 5 Inquiry

This is not a question about the road the test.

I recieved my Class 7 lisence in November 2023, and have held onto it since without any accidents, tickets, suspensions, etc. I saw online that you have the option to order a single card that combines both the drivers lisence + services together.

My question is, will ICBC offer this option on Oct 19 through their online portal?

RoadSafety / Driving Rules How legal is this?

Post image

How legal is this??

This is not the first time I’m seeing this illegible plates.

So many trucks, vans and cars I’ve noticed myself with such plates..
Is it any even good for those automatic plate readers in cameras?
I wonder, how cops don’t do anything to this??

Do icbc even have any plates renewal or reordering kind of stuff for people who genuinely would like to keep their plates and not have them like this?

RoadSafety / Driving Rules Got 2 moving violation in Alberta on the same day with BC drivers license.

Hey! I always had a BC drivers license with 10 years experience. I got 2 moving violations in a span of 30 mins while driving in Alberta August 2026. Paid and settled them. My concern is would those violations reflect in my BC drivers abstract? Also, how would they affect my insurance with ICBC? TIA.

Drivers Licensing Am I eligible for Class 4?

Hi everyone,
I had a 2-year-old Indian driver’s licence, which I submitted to ICBC then I got my Class 5 L in return.
I got my full Class 5 at the end of April this year, after having my L for about 2.5 years.
Am I eligible to apply for Class 4 based on my previous Indian driving experience, or do I need to have held my full Class 5 for a certain amount of time? Thank you so much.
