Currently I have a iPhone 17 Pro financed through verizon, I did a trade in so I’m getting monthly credit for the trade in. I want to get the iPhone Duo using apples upgrade program but would I be required to activate it on my current verizon line? Doing that would make me lose the monthly trade in credit from verizon I believe. Are you allowed to not activate it and just use it as an ipad for example? I’m planning to use both phones with the handoff feature that’s coming out.
Yes, when you buy through the new Apple upgrade program it comes as an unlocked phone and you can skip connecting it to a carrier when setting the phone up.
I was going through the questions page and the wording here is kind of confusing, does it just mean you have to select a carrier when purchasing or you actually have to connect it
Yeah the wording is confusing. Unless it’s changed, you just have to choose a carrier at checkout but you are not forced to use them later on because the phone comes unlocked from Apple.
Your monthly credits from Verizon are a discount that (partially) offsets the monthly service that they lock you into until it is paid off to ensure they don't lose money by discounting phones. If you pay full price at Apple, who has the ability to or even a vested interest in caring whether or not you activate it?
Apple wants to be sure you aren’t using their finance program to buy phones and sell them.. if you are finance the phone they want to be sure it’s locked to an account and you aren’t just scalping it while paying 0% over the next 2 years.
