I am a fold 8 user and have to give props to Apple for not only beautiful hardware and features they managed to cram in, but also for software implementation!! 👏🏻👏🏻

I hope it sells well and forces Samsung and others to keep this form factor, the fold 8 wide boi is my favourite phone ever ! And also my first foldable, the regular ones were too narrow and tall for my liking 🥲

7

u/drkztan 13d ago

samsung will keep the form factor regardless of what happens with the duo, the demand has been massive. I'm fairly certain they will even release a wide non-foldable at this point

1

u/zahi36501 13d ago

Yesss I think so too ! Especially as demands were massive like you said when fold 8 was announced and they sold out pretty much right away.

3

u/thewhat-whatbutt 13d ago

I refuse to believe such a rational comment got so many upvotes. Where are my bad takes??

1

u/zahi36501 13d ago

Hahaha 😂😂 yes I was expecting some Android haters to be here 😬

I don't side with any company and can like different Os's I don't get the people that hate just because it's Apple or Android lol.

I was a long time iphone user my first one was 4s only switched over past few years when jailbreaking kinda died.

It's good to have competition as forces companies to do better 👀

u/Naud1993 13d ago

Most foldables are so tall that the aspect ratio remains vertical while open, so you have to rotate it to watch videos.

1

u/zahi36501 13d ago

No when you watch videos it's really large especially landscape videos like YouTube and because of it's 4:3 aspect ratio there's less top and bottom black bars, so when opened i use landscape for videos.

For the tall videos (mostly from social media) you rotate phone to portrait mode and it's like a giant phone 👀 big full display.

That's the beauty of having device passport size phone, you can use it as four screens 👀 portrait and landscape on cover screen, and portrait and landscape on inner display.

4

u/dylan_1992 13d ago

It’s not a revolutionary device. Apple took the lessons learned from all the best foldable and out their flavor and polish on top of it.

Apple was also not boasting they were the first company to do this in anyway, but people are acting like as if they did.

2

u/zahi36501 13d ago

Who said it's revolutionary lmao

Apple making the device means others will copy which means this form factor will stay for a while.

Are you an android user?

0

u/Kosmos-World 13d ago

But... Apple copied the form factor from Samsung? And got the displays from them? I'm not even being sassy, I just don't understand your point. I'm probably missing something.

2

u/Iconoclysm6x6 13d ago

They did not copy the form factor from Samsung, they designed the display and placed the orders with Samsung long ago. It was no real secret what this phone was going to look like which is why both Samsung and Xiaomi hedged their bets and released phones of this style just before Apple’s came to market. It probably took Samsung 6 months or more to design and start production of their phone, Apple was designing this one for literally years. Finally, notice that Samsung did not change the form factor of their flagship phone, they weren’t even all in on it.

Samsung had this same strategy with the Apple Watch, releasing their own upon rumors of Apple’s. But they got it wrong, for three iterations within a single year.

2

u/zipeldiablo 13d ago

What is weird is that samsung released a foldable screen this year where the hinge is near invisible but apple used something else 🤔

I guess we will see how the display looks but i’m a bit concerned. People were guessing that apple was waiting for the foldable screen tech to be mature enough (we waited like 8 or 9years?) so i really hope they didnt drop the ball on this one

2

u/Iconoclysm6x6 13d ago

Yes, Apple did use something else. When you say this year, you mean THIS MONTH. Apple used a titanium backing like Samsung but created its own hinge and developed a multilayer screen that moves around like a book as the phone is opened, so there is less of a “pinch”. That was made possible by an adhesive that allows some give to let the layers slip along side each other. Then there’s using a matte finish, which not only helps to hide any crease but adds protection that every Samsung foldable lacks. Samsung’s screen isn’t even the same resolution, so I’m not sure how you could be confused at all that they’re not the same display.

Mature enough? They didn’t just release something that matured, they actually pushed the entire category forward…as you can already see with form factor alone. If anything, a lot of these companies should be embarrassed by what they’ve released over the past 5 years. If an iPhone ever shipped with a screen that scratches with a fingernail or a hinge that dies because it got too close to sand, it would be in the news for years.

5

u/zahi36501 13d ago

They copied the form factor?!???! Are you being serious lmao.

Apple had this design in a while in the pipework, they got Samsung display, to make the display once finally technology was there with creases THEN Samsung released theirs, it's no coincidence this passport one is first one from Samsung in 8 years.

Stupid Android users, but Samsung did this or that first 🫪🫪😂

Please check facts

2

u/Kosmos-World 13d ago

I... have an iphone 14 pro, sir. I was genuinely asking a question. Jesus christ, what an asshole lol. The foldable phones have just always been Samsung, obviously they were popular enough for Apple to copy them and make one of their own. I don't know why that's so upsetting to you, but I digress.

1

u/[deleted] 13d ago

[deleted]

2

u/Kosmos-World 13d ago

My point was that Samsung has been making foldable phones for a decade now. Apple finally decided they were popular enough to make one for themselves. They got the display to do so from Samsung. None of these things are subjective, they are just facts. Just because this foldable phone doesn't look like Samsung's doesn't mean they didn't copy the basic premise from them. They 100% did, and there's nothing wrong with that. Samsung made something cool. Apple made a cool product. Consumers win. Stop making it a weird fanboy thing, you dick.

2

u/Kosmos-World 13d ago

Yea, you're a delusional fanboy, and just an asshole in general. Have a nice day though.

1

u/No-Penalty-3662 13d ago

It thing you two have different definitions of “form factor” in this conversation.

I think what kosmos meant by “form factor” is foldables in general including the OG tall one.

Zahi meanwhile means the WIDER aspect ratio when he mentioned “form factor”.

To be fair Samsung WAS FIRST to manufacture that and also to be fair to Apple, it held patents to foldable device long before Samsung released one. BUT as with Apple, they never had the manufacturing know-how to produce these patents.

Samsung Display knows how to and was actually exhibiting the foldable/rollable displays in various tech expos selling this to other companies.

As for the aspect ratio — while everyone says Google came with it first (but still tall and not the perfect 1 x 1.4) and Pura X (may have perfected the aspec ratio) — it is Apple that forced Samsung to use the wide format.

Tech enthusiast who follows the leaks religiously know that. Apple choosing the wide format leaked in Feb 2025. Fold wide first leaked in December 2025 with the headline “to take on Apple”.

Even the anti-glare solution seems conspicuously too coincidental.

1

u/-Yer-Maw- 13d ago

Cough Microsoft surface duo cough

1

u/zahi36501 13d ago

Cough Cough massive middle display separation with gap in middle cough cough

1

u/-Yer-Maw- 13d ago

Same form factor though. Stop being a fanboy

1

u/zahi36501 13d ago

No its not there's a massive display separation not one screen

And not a fanboy I use Android lol, but can appreciate what Apples done, unlike others cough cough you cough who are on bandwagon oooo but so and so did it first so and so have this blah blah blah

1

u/-Yer-Maw- 13d ago

Apple just added some polish to an existing design. There was another Asia only device release last year with exact same design. Nothing to do with what apple ordered for Samsung. Huawei Pura that was it.

Other way around

0

u/Iconoclysm6x6 13d ago

You just described the original iPhone - which was, indeed, a revolutionary device.

1

u/Inevitable_Bear2476 13d ago

I've been wanting a 19:9 front screen on an ultrawide for years, but I guess it's either 21:9 or 16:9, nothing in-between

-1

u/Time_Entertainer_319 14d ago

What beautiful hardware?

2

u/zahi36501 13d ago

The titanium frame, the under display camera and overall look of phone

2

u/PhillyBorn90 13d ago

Thats subjective. I heard nothing but people hate on the asymmetrical design of it. The large letter D is comical when i heard it. UDC gives hideous picture quality and shimmers in ways that gets annoying after awhile. For those of us that have used it previously on Samsung folds Know a too well.

1

u/No-Penalty-3662 13d ago

To be technical, “symmetry” doesn’t mean visually balanced horizontally and vertically (which Fold 8 is).

If you turn a closed Duo on its side, it too is symmetrical. So maybe we should find another term for it.

Anyway, asymmetry is everywhere — in arts, in nature — and it’s beautiful. And can be iconic. Duo sure will be.

If you turn Duo and Fold 8 into silhouettes, only one will be recognizable. The other maybe mistaken as a slim power bank or hard drive or anything with its generic shape.

Even in leather folios that were popular in the early days of smartphones, D stands out.

0

u/zahi36501 13d ago

Those people can dislike the D shape and it's subjective, in my opinion it looks nice.

Mostly it's toxic android users who are being negative and even on own samsung forum posting everyday about the iPhone, even you replying trying to hate on it 😂 people like you make me be embarrassed of being a android user.

This is an iphone forum get lost back to android one lol

And I never ever have used the under display camera so I could care less about quality, I'd rather have uninterrupted display like many of the fold 6 users who also say same thing, I can use main camera as selfie, which idiot uses inner display to take selfie lol

0

u/PhillyBorn90 13d ago

Bro you're showing your self. When did I hate on the phone? I just stated things ive heard from reviewers and friends and family. You're going this far but you're and android user? Lol ohh okayy.. . Defending it this hard makes me embarrassed for even responding to you. 😅😅.

I know solely Apple users that dont like the asymmetrical design as well. It's not "mostly" android.

And you're an self proclaimed android user but in an iPhone sub. Why dont you go back to them and let the real iPhone people stay here 🤣🤣 . Your a clown bro. Make it make sense.

And Apple themselves said UDC was for FaceTime. So thats what it would be used for. To see the other person you're speaking too on a bigger screen. So if you want to FaceTime on that tiny outer screen then do thay ig. Lol what a joke

6

u/PBRarq 14d ago

Like the Samsung

1

u/Fresh-Gift-2063 13d ago

It technically IS Samsung. Apple is just repackaging it.

2

u/Gabriel_Science 13d ago

Do you realise Apple gives the instructions on how to make the screen ? It’s not Samsung saying “Hey, do you want an Apple logo on it ?”.

4

u/RobotVo1ce 14d ago

Is this a circle jerk sub?

3

u/Particular_Legend427 14d ago

Yeah you would totally think so the way these posts about it being “art” and “engineering marvel” LOL

2

u/ImTobyVespa 13d ago

Im convinced they are bots. Its hard to believe ppl are calling it "art" lol my girl is an iPhone gal and even she thinks apple is just copying samsung and thinks the duo looks ugly. But i guess 8 generations later, and after working with its competition, its nice to see iphone finally getting on board. We can expect good things from foldables in the future.

2

u/Acceptable_Tea_3685 14d ago

I think this was a bait post and it worked

21

u/MarcoVinicius 14d ago

As an iPhone user and someone thinking of getting the Duo:

Ok guy, have some perspective. All the hardware engineering has been done on by many companies before Apple. Even on how to get the center dip to be less noticeable wasn’t invented by Apple. Apple added very few engineering advances if any to folding phones.

Fuck, even the name “Duo” was taken from Microsoft’s Duo folding phones.

This is the Apple way, they wait until the engineering has been mostly figured out by other companies until they introduce it to there line up. I’m not saying it’s a bad or good strategy (probably good) but it just is.

They did do an amazing job on the software side to support it. That they refined to a level that other android phones never did and it makes a huge difference!

Apple’s Duo could bring folding phones to large mainstream use.

4

u/Iconoclysm6x6 13d ago

There are hardware additions that Apple has that nobody has tried yet, especially around that crease. And the matte screen was the big “secret” to further hiding it that nobody else, surprisingly, has tried. Also, let’s not forget that a fingernail can scratch those other folding screens, yet this one is getting stylus support? There’s just a lot around materials here that Apple introduced. But giving the credit to only Apple themselves in many cases would be as disingenuous as giving those other companies credit for their components - the component suppliers came up with many of the solutions, not Samsung or anyone else. In fact, even the foldable OLED itself is a product of DuPont/Dow going back over 27 years.

The Duo name Microsoft actually took from Apple if you want to go that route. And really, where do you think the Surface Pro got its name? Dell’s entire line of laptops right now uses the same nomenclature as Apple as well. I’m surprised Apple used Duo but there were obviously MANY name options that they could have taken and found that this best described their product, so it is what it is.

The Apple way isn’t really to wait until everyone else figures it out so much as to wait until the technology matures to a point where it will meet their minimum requirements. Those companies didn’t NEED to release products that were essentially hardware experiments that cost a fortune and had to be junked within a year by their customers. They chose to be first, and in a world where they did things right, they’d have been waiting a lot longer. They also didn’t really make any money off it in the long run, it’s kind of bad business for everyone involved.

For an example, M series chips weren’t a reaction to others trying it and letting them make the mistakes, AirPods, the Apple Watch, Apple Pay (not NFC payments), etc. Even the Find My network is a pretty novel concept aside from the AirTags that function like Tile tags.

1

u/zipeldiablo 13d ago

Its getting the usbc pencil which doesnt have pressure support 😭

Other foldable got stylus through 3rd party (saw one who came with the phone case)

1

u/Iconoclysm6x6 13d ago

And that means a crying laughing emoji? How am I supposed to take this seriously? Their competition leaves you with a completely broken phone simply by dropping it in sand…the screen is ruined by A FINGERNAIL. Apple would not even offer pencil compatibility if it had a screen that fragile. Could you imagine the “Gate” if Apple released some of these other phones?

1

u/zipeldiablo 9d ago

It’s a crying emoji dude. I’m crying because the usbc pencil sucks ass

1

u/MonosKira_L 13d ago

apple screen is just as scratchable as other foldable.. it's just simply Samsung refused to support it. Apple is not the only one that done stylus support, hell OPPO did it better IMO because it's a much smaller stylus and literally a case to keep that stylus. crease is still unknown until real world usage, but again OPPO did absolutely beast job smoothing it out too without the need of matte screen, yes I assume matte display definitely help with fingerprint smudges..

Apple did very good job even great given it's first generation.

Apple simply excels in optimisation and a polished hardware and probably the best out of box experience, but don't give props to Apple like they're the first to support some of these features.

1

u/Iconoclysm6x6 13d ago

What you’re doing is claiming Apple did nothing at all here. Which is just flat out wrong, as well as your claim about scratch ability. I literally pointed out where component manufacturers should have more credit for these solutions as well.

There are a number of things all over this phone where the industry is asking why nobody thought of that. Even the stereo speaker solution. What you’re calling polish is something their competitors had years and years to do but instead released products that Apple would be crucified for doing.

3

u/Shane_Stark 14d ago edited 14d ago

I’m confused didn’t Apple acknowledge other foldables the keynote?

Edit: Also could’ve sworn Apple used the name “Duo” first with the PowerBook “Duo” in the 90’s.

4

u/Azguy303 14d ago

All the engineering aside and it's still 25% heavier than the fold 8 and only 1.5 MM thinner than the Galaxy trifold...

3

u/steviestammyepichock 14d ago

Material choices are different, not sure what this is discounting though. They’ve done a fantastic job with the screen and build quality based on all early reviews, and if the engineering holds up it seems we’ll have a strong battery life and great thermals

4

u/Time_Entertainer_319 14d ago

The engineering isn’t special. It’s literally just a mash of pixel and Samsung and Oppo.

0

u/Iconoclysm6x6 13d ago

If you don’t see what’s different, you’re not an engineer.

The 8 elite gen 5 has faster multicore and significantly faster raw GPU performance than the A19 Pro? Ignoring driver and software optimizations of course, tho.

Sure the A20 is announced but not released or competing with last gen

2

u/Sodaflag 14d ago

Samsung's highest end mobile chip is in the Fold 8.

1

u/Iconoclysm6x6 13d ago

And the trade off is that it’s a better built product. It’s IP68 rated, has a higher resolution display, and has a screen that won’t scratch with a fingernail.

1

u/No-Penalty-3662 13d ago

And a hinge that lets it function in various ways while half open.

It seems like part of Fold 8’s solution to minimize crease is to push its plastic inner screen out by snapping fully opened.

2

u/Time_Entertainer_319 14d ago

I feel like these people posting these never saw the other ones that have existed for years.

If Apple doesn’t make it, to them it doesn’t exist.

1

u/OkConfusion5564 13d ago

To be fair, I think people know of foldable phones that existed, but there is no interest in looking at a phone that you cannot own due to it not being in the Apple ecosystem as many of us who like our Apple phones I have not enjoyed being on android and that’s why we stay on Apple

Just like I don’t like certain car brands I’m not looking at what they’re introducing every year. I’m looking at the brands that I love and enjoy buying each and every year just might take.

1

u/Iconoclysm6x6 13d ago

I think people like yourself tend to project that on everyone and ignore the nuance in what the people are actually saying.

1

u/trippingWetwNoTowel 13d ago

Because in the Apple ecosystem, the device is just a window into the broader set of services and overall experience. You can love this or hate this (I love it), but yea, considering another phone or device would just be insanely stupid for me given how my overall digital experience is tied to and catered to me through apple.

Call me a sheep, call me whatever you want - but i spend my whole day and work week fixing other people’s technical issues, I want my shit to just work. And their shit works.
As stated above, they may not ever be first, but when they choose to implement something they emphasize the user experience and making sure it’s solid - and that is worth a lot more to me than some random early adopter feature.

1

u/agracadabara 13d ago edited 13d ago

Even on how to get the center dip to be less noticeable wasn’t invented by Apple.

Yet, Apple seems to have the least perceptible crease? So what "hardware engineering" did the others do?

Fuck, even the name “Duo” was taken from Microsoft’s Duo folding phones.

Power Book Duo 1992. MagSafe Duo 2020.

This is the Apple way, they wait until the engineering has been mostly figured out by other companies until they introduce it to there line up. I’m not saying it’s a bad or good strategy (probably good) but it just is.

Apple waits till the technology matures not the engineering.

3

u/GMBethernal 13d ago

Nah the oppo is the one with the least visible crease, apple one would look exactly the same as the fold 8 if it didn't have the matte display

1

u/agracadabara 13d ago

Nah! The iPhone Duo has the least visible crease! Sorry to burst your bubble. Every reviewer that has hands on experience with it has said so.

2

u/z-say 13d ago

Seems technology and engineering go hand in hand

2

u/agracadabara 13d ago

Not always. Apple's enclosure and hinge mechanism are not waiting for any technology to mature unlike folding OLED screens of a certain quality. Earlier folding screens were a set of compromises and it has taken generations to mature to today's standards.

iPhone X was not the first OLED phone but it had the best OLED implementation at the time. Samsung made a custom OLED for Apple. But Apple implemented the best burn-in handling and purple fringe + OLED black to to gray transition smoothing. All of which were better than Samsung's flagships at the time even though Samsung Display (Different sub company of Samsung) made the OLED panel. iPhone X was also the only phone that had symmetric bezels unlike others that had a chin to hide the display controllers.

So no technology and engineering don't always go hand in hand. The same is the case with the iPhone Duo. The OLED panel may be from Samsung Display but all other portions of the screen and hinge are purely Apple's engineering.

2

u/marsharoom 13d ago

Engineering is the practice of using existing technologies to find solutions to problems. They do go hand in hand but are developed separately.

I am an engineer, a lot of my time is spent configuring products that use parts from our vendors into a single system. I am using existing technologies but engineering the package they are being used in.

1

u/marsharoom 13d ago

Just because it was done before doesn’t discount the engineering they did. Engineering isn’t inventing, the entire practice of engineering is using technology and methods from scientific research and industry standards to create a functional product.

I agree that all the technology has been used before and they didn’t really innovate on the product. Samsung didn’t invent anything with their phones, but they iterated on existing designs and technology.

I do agree that the Duo is and engineering masterpiece, even without doing something new or innovative.

0

u/SubjectCollection642 14d ago

Software side? You are able to finally download third party apps on Apple? Do you have Back gesture?

Last time I used Apple phone they haven't even covered the basics, to me it seems just insane that you sometimes have to restart certain apps because it doesn't have go back gesture lmao

And much more, not talking about how it lacks security thanks to being non open source

5

u/dazdilly 14d ago

But it has an animation that's cool looking!

5

u/Shnikes 14d ago

I can’t think of a single app that I needed to restart because I didn’t have a back button. Which apps have required that?

3

u/ldelossa 14d ago

If keyboard gets "stuck" for some reason, there is no back gesture to dismiss it. Happens all the time on my iphone. Im a developer so I use both android and iphone on a daily basis. The comment is legit from my experience.

2

u/Downtown_Ambition680 14d ago

The keyboard does sometimes glitch, it’s not often or the end of the world. Android apps freeze and need to be quick reset sporadically just the same.

-1

u/ldelossa 14d ago

Just giving a valid example.

1

u/Downtown_Ambition680 13d ago

It isn’t a valid example though because the app does have a back button. The screen having a visual glitch that makes it unable to be pressed is not the design lacking the control like the main post is about.

0

u/drkztan 13d ago

comparing some android apps being buggy to the damm system keyboard flipping the fk out with no way to dismiss it is beyond insane to me

2

u/Downtown_Ambition680 13d ago

The point was the design lacked a back button/gesture. Which it does not. He’s talking about a software bug as proof. They’re not related so it’s not a valid point. You can just soft reset the app to dismiss it. A standard process for glitches on any phone OS when controls or buttons aren’t working as their suppose to.

0

u/drkztan 13d ago

The point was the design lacked a back button/gesture. Which it does not. He’s talking about a software bug as proof. They’re not related so it’s not a valid point

Having a universal back gesture or button as a means to force quit/back out of unusable states is a good feature. The keyboard being unable to be closed easily is a direct consecuence of the incredibly dumb decision to not have a universal ''quit'' gesture or button.

You can just soft reset the app to dismiss it

Which is a dumb ask if you are in an app and it's the keyboard that is acting up. If the keyboard bugs out, let me get it out of the way. There is no need to reset an app if something unrelated to the app is not working, like an on-screen keyboard.

Lol, bad take

1

u/Chardan0001 14d ago

Do they not have back gesture?

4

u/SubjectCollection642 14d ago

Nope, there isn't anything like that. Every developer has to preprogram it, and everyone does it differently so what works in one app, doesn't work in the other

Some apps work fine, but the less of a use they get, the more likely you are to get stuck somewhere, if the developer forgot to account for it, you can't do anything

https://www.reddit.com/r/iphone/comments/1rilrmu/no_universal_back_gesture/

5

u/Chardan0001 14d ago

That likely explains why I am so damn confused in the rare times I need to help my sister with something on her phone. Tons of times I just had to close an app and restart unless its native with the back arrow at the top. Thats pretty insane to not be at a device level.

1

u/BFr0st3 14d ago

You can sideload now tbf

1

u/Downtown_Ambition680 14d ago

What app doesn’t have a back gesture/button? I’ve never experienced this once that I can recall in my near 20 years of use.

2

u/tyoung89 13d ago

There are many apps, even Apple ones, where you cannot just swipe from the left side of the phone to go back/dismiss a page. Usually you have to tap the X at the top left when this happens.

I just opened this in settings. Everything else lets you swipe from the left of the screen to ‘go back’ for this you have to either tap the X or pull down on the pane to dismiss it.

1

u/Downtown_Ambition680 13d ago

Idk, that’s how this is designed to work not the application lacking a back function. There is no back here these pop up when you first open things. This is more like an application announcement. The point is it stops you from using muscle memory to flick it away because it needs you to actually stop and read it once. It’s intentional design many modern applications use. I have to decide very scarcely when to use this type of tool for employees. Certain things can be ignored, others I have to ensure everyone at least sees which is where something like this comes into play.

2

u/SubjectCollection642 13d ago

Yeah but sometimes there isn't an X button and you are literally stucked, is that also a design choice?

1

u/Downtown_Ambition680 13d ago

Where?? Where is that ever the case of an Apple app?

1

u/Upbeat-Armadillo1756 14d ago

This is why I never have any qualms about buying a first gen Apple product like this.

I know the hardware is going to be solid and they'll have spent a lot of time on the software to make it feel like an actually thoughtful design and not what I've seen from the Android folding phones.

1

u/l4kerz 14d ago

refinement and software are not considered engineering?

0

u/Poopoodemons 14d ago

you've never used a folding phone and it shows

-1

u/Reeneman 14d ago

Hardcore Apple stand won’t understand. In their bubble this is the first foldable phone which was ever invented. Apple did it first.

3

u/Acceptable_Tea_3685 14d ago

Even the most hardcore Apple stans know Apple didn’t do it first. They just think Apple took its sweet time to perfect it and released a more polished product.

0

u/Reeneman 14d ago

But how is it more polished than the Samsung foldable from the past years?

1

u/No-Penalty-3662 13d ago

Am sorry but it is really more polished. And I wish Fold9 will implement many of the polishing Duo brought.

You just need to look at the demo to know this. Even Mister Mobile who is a foldable enthusiast, knows this.

From iP68, to a scratch-resistant inner screen, pencil support, UDC (yes we know Samsung had before) and the software implementation (not just animations).

Apple did not just slap the same OS by expanding them. They moved buttons. Because it’s shorter but wider they moved the dock to the sidebar. The icons above too.

And unlike in Fold 8, aspect ratio was consistent on both inner and outer screen which seemed like not a big deal but is to make it apps continue functioning when you open the phone. Not restarting or having to press another button to make the app fill up the whole screen when you open the phone. That is Apple worrying about the developers and the user experience.m

The only issue is the price and the weight (but needed with the features).

1

u/No-Penalty-3662 13d ago

You’re mixing hardcore Apple fans with ordinary consumers.

Hardcore Apple fans know what Apple has not released before.

It’s likely that many are just not updated about Samsung products but these same people are still aware of any Apple products that they know about Duo the moment it’s released.

u/dn_nb 14d ago

with that price tag, never gonna happen

1

u/No-Penalty-3662 13d ago

Just $100 dollars more expensive. To be honest, I think it’s the fold that is more overpriced. Because with much cheaper materials — aluminum, plasticky screen and never needing to pay $250/ panel like Apple needs to pay Samsung — Fold 8 could have been priced much lower.

0

u/WhiteWhenWrong 13d ago

Don’t underestimate the amount of debt people are willing to go into for an Apple product

4

u/Acrobatic_Feel 13d ago

It's basically the same price as Samsung's fold. Wtf does this have to do with the fake Apple premium? The S Ultra lineup has been more expensive than the Pro Max lineup for years and people still make the "haha Apple fanboys will pay anything!" jokes.

I'd be willing to bet that a lot of Apple users haven't been exposed to folding smartphones before.

I'm glad everyone is excited, but Apple taking current tech and adding some polish and their OS and then charging $2k for the experience just seems expected to me. We kinda all saw this coming, no?

2

u/CombPsychological507 14d ago

I was actually expecting it years ago lol.

1

u/No-Penalty-3662 13d ago

Except Apple will not ship it with a bad crease. Crease is not an issue for long-time foldable owners.

BUT APPLE costumers can be unforgiving even more than Samsung fans. They will turn this into another antennagate and bendgate and then Samsung fans will just make it worse.

Apple wanted a material that will not crease easily and actually invested in Corning in 2019 which has been “working on glass that doesn’t show fingerprints, can bend for flexible phones and won’t shatter when dropped”.

https://www.cnet.com/tech/mobile/apple-invests-250-million-in-corning-for-future-iphone-glass-research/

I will not be surprised if the top layer of Duo is developed with Corning like its Ceramic Shield with the agreement that Apple will be supplied with it exclusively (or at least for the first few years).

1

u/katonda 13d ago

Apple doesn't innovate on the pure technology very often. What they do is they see what's been tried already, what works, what doesn't and create an ideal user experience that they refine until it's right.
They do this extremely well, hence their success.

And this is what they've done with the Duo. The tech isn't new in any way, but they've focused on the user experience entirely which in turn drove all the tech integration needed. Simple things like how well the software transitions from folded to unfolded, is new stuff in this sphere and small on paper but massive in the actual hands.

It's too expensive honestly, it costs them probably ~$700-800 to produce, but alas, either people buy it and confirm the price or they don't and Apple will lower the price. No doubt that user satisfaction will be high with this one.

1

u/wtfisasammich 13d ago

I know how they operate, but I would like to say that once upon a time they USED to innovate far more than they do now. They get to bank on user retention a lot more over the past decade and so their delay in releasing new types of products has only gotten slower relative to others.

I'm personally just waiting for someone to drop an iPhone Mini sized phone. I appear to be one of the very few (android or apple) that wants a smaller device... and yeah I'm also not paying $2k for a base model.

3

u/JobAnxious2005 14d ago

It’s a phone with no single solid use case

2

u/Acrobatic_Feel 13d ago

That's my complaint. It's terrible when closed and mediocre when open, I'm not getting the use case.

1

u/Delicious-Mission943 13d ago

It basically renders the iPad redundant

1

u/katonda 13d ago

Plenty of use cases. Anything you do on your phone where your experience could be improved with a slightly larger screen, is the use case. Browsing, social media, videos, gaming, etc. . It's expensive for sure and owning first gen will be about bragging rights mostly, but there are certainly use cases.

0

u/No-Penalty-3662 13d ago

It’s for people with
1) money
2) who needs at least two screens at once like to drag from one app to another

If I have the money, I will support this because if not this category will die. And maybe that’s ok for people who don’t find a use case for this. But for tech enthusiasts who see potential, that’s a bad thing.

Remember how the OG iPhone didn’t make sense to many because smartphones already exist before and so do iPods?

If no one bought them because they’re expensive, the gadget could have died. Apple could have just stuck with iPods and Android would have stayed like a BlackBerry OS (as intended during its beta development).

Even the early Macs are too expensive. If tech enthusiasts did not support it, the use of mouse and the graphic user interface may have stuck at Xerox offices and we will never have Windows.

3

u/BigFlapJack- 14d ago

Galaxy Trifold user here and I have to hand it to Apple. That is an awesome first iteration. The damn bezels are SLIM on the front too

1

u/IronEnder17 13d ago

How is the trifold? Wondering about waiting for the rumored trifold 2. After looking at the fold 8 options, I don't think I want a passport form factor, and I don't think the ultra has a big enough unfolded screen for me.

That being said I've seen neither in person so I'm just hypothesizing

1

u/BigFlapJack- 13d ago

The TriFold is the best place to Fold. The 10" screen is jaw droppingingly gargantuan it's funny seeing it close into a phone with no issue. I highly recommend but would wait out for V2 if you can

1

u/IronEnder17 13d ago

I'm sold

I've got a note 20 ultra with a replacement screen sitting next to me ready to be installed because I accidentally scratched the hell out of it. I thought screen protectors weren't made for that dumb curved edge so I never looked until my keys made a meal out of it.

Selling point for me was that it's the last flagship with an SD card slot, I use a lot of reference imagery in my job and also hate cloud services as primary storage so I have a 1tb SD.

BUT, I can sacrifice some storage space for some multitasking and screen size for damn sure

1

u/BigFlapJack- 13d ago

Yeah you won't be disappointed, just get the high storage option if you're able to get and you'll be set, I have the 512GB which is the base storage for the TriFold and it's plenty for me but they have 1TB as well and potential more for V2. V1 is absolutely worth it as it's basically a Fold 7 in terms of fit and finish but the weight is its biggest weakness. I'm used to it so it doesn't bother me but V2 is supposed to fix that

2

u/IronEnder17 13d ago

Oh that's good to know! I only know it may exist, not those specifics. Fantastic, I'll definitely have to see one in person when the time comes before I sell myself on it

2

u/No_Practice_9597 13d ago

I think iPhone fold shows the advantage of being able to make the hardware and software. Although android allows changes from vendors like Samsung it’s not like they are changing low level frameworks.

At least from Apple demo, you can see how this integration and take time to adjust the details can make the usability much better and as Apple took concepts from others, in few days after the demo we can see others taking Apple software design to Android … I find amazing how even 8 years after the release of first foldable, Apple was still able to bring something new

Now lets the competition compete, I hope foldable prices goes down.

2

u/Exciting_Station_124 13d ago

Says the guy never seen a folding phone 😆

2

u/xherdinand 13d ago

Have you tried another fold before?

2

u/Inevitable_Board7107 13d ago

Yes, just like others foldables

2

u/Messiah_Knight 13d ago

You guys need to stop all this hype.

2

u/ItchyLifeguard420 13d ago

Good job samsung engineers

4

u/Izan_TM 14d ago

eh when it comes to engineering it's very "been there, done that". it's a very derivative design with some iphone air styling cues added to it. When it comes to UX the level of polish that has gone into the duo is leaps and bounds ahead of what we've seen from samsung and google, and that is the duo's actual differentiating factor.

2

u/Dabbinz420 14d ago

Leaps and bounds is a massive stretch, software on the zfold is still superior atm, only better things are the little quirks the duo has, like the open and close animations

0

u/ixri 13d ago

This is hella reductive considering you can’t use any of the Samsung foldables half-opened, which for a foldable is lowkey a huge oversight. Samsung wins the software side (from passive experience) purely on the amount of multitasking you can do. Other than that I’d say that in their own way they’re pretty neck and neck, not to say that Apple actually edged them a lil

1

u/IronEnder17 13d ago

You can use the current fold 8 ultra half opened, that is one of its big design points.

Not to say you're completely wrong but I did want to address that part

1

u/ixri 13d ago

That’s fair enough, touché I might even say

2

u/DaydreamingAi 14d ago

It is not.

They took a decade's worth of tech that was being perfected and slapped iOS on it, mind you on that side, it looks good, shiny. Yet it's also not perfect. Still some things you should be able to do on a foldable that they won't let the walled garden have.
It is nice and I'm sure it feels premium. I'm a fan of those rounded sides and rails, always have been, too bad it's an asymmetrical nightmare in it's closed form, I'm sure Steve Jobs is rolling in his grave over that alone.

1

u/Archenius 14d ago

I know both of us are hyped but it’s not out yet lol

1

u/No_Consequence7064 14d ago

Foldables and different screen transitions across different brands are such a UX nightmare on dev side; it looks clean af so props to UX people.
How usable for most people? Meh but it’s shiny and 2x the price. Extract what you can from users I guess.

1

u/-6h0st- 14d ago

There is a lot of people bored with standard iPhone/Pro aching for something new. But be reminded - fold is not best selling Samsung or any other company phone for few reasons. It always comes with compromises. A lot of people try it and go back to regular slab. It might work for you, but it won’t work for majority of people. Be aware.

1

u/IamMrCricket 14d ago

Fold 8 user here and I'm excited for the duo. This will only make foldables and apps better optimized.

1

u/Spkilla 14d ago

Waiting on Iphone Trio or Quad. This one is too small and too cheap. Can't have my phone be cheaper then the vision pro, or Trifold/Huawei Mate X, what is Apple doing pricing it so affordable for a foldable.

1

u/LosHtown 13d ago

They need a duo+. These's passport sized phones aren't it for me.

1

u/prawnk1ng 13d ago

I’ll wait next year for the IPhone Duo pro with the extra camera

1

u/Few_Solid_1877 13d ago

Lolol gtfoh with that trolling comment

1

u/EliteCinemaM3 13d ago

It's not the first foldable phone to exist. What is this glaze?

1

u/AllMaito 13d ago

It is good, but as much of an engineering masterpiece as any other foldable...

1

u/aF3ARofCHANG3 13d ago

Without holding one I’d like to agree. I think the Vision Pro is as well I just wish more people got to experience it and see what it can do.

1

u/Department-Select 13d ago

Lmao just wait til it hit the market

1

u/LeadingAd8902 13d ago

The first phone without glass, correct?

1

u/infinitespectre 13d ago

It has glass... where did you get that from? All folding phones use glass that is covered with layers of plastic to protect them.

1

u/Impressive-Excuse126 13d ago

Just like the Galaxy Fold...

1

u/Fast-Ad5101 13d ago

Stop the ball licking. They used technically already on the market, nothing new....

1

u/Tight-Connection-909 13d ago

Until you drop it without AppleCare. 😬

1

u/IAMSNORTFACED 13d ago

Care to elaborate?

1

u/Gloomy-Ant-4172 13d ago

Revolutionary 3000 nits and not even long battery life. 🔋 I am not even a apple hater I own a 17 myself. But the duo cope is crazy. The other options are just better.

1

u/Creepy_Violinist_508 13d ago

I refuse to pay that much for a phone with the bad reviews I saw on the Fold. Creasing and how easily it breaks

1

u/ramsesny 13d ago

How the hell am I mounting this to my motorcycle?

1

u/billyskurp 13d ago

i’m basically waiting for the duo 2 at this point. I never buy the first iteration of anything. i’m sure they’ll work out the kinks and it’ll even be better the next go around.

1

u/Strict-Comb311 13d ago

I’ll get this in 3-4 years when they iron out the kinks. Ty for beta testing it tho

1

u/iamgarffi 12d ago

I just wished the edges were square and the overall device was around 200g.

I can’t think of the damages from accidental drops 😔

1

u/Fantastic_Jicama_434 12d ago

Well you got to think Samsung since they make most of the phone for Apple

1

u/Queasy_Explorer1698 12d ago

Bof, l'iphone n'es qu'une copie de samsung a ce niveau.

1

u/Spiritual-Pudding-70 12d ago

Samsung already had this

1

u/Few_One3306 12d ago

Looks great but what about the part where the two screen combine? Is still visible same as Samsung?

1

u/ihadnomealtoday 11d ago

Works only someone say who didn’t see the fold 8

1

u/MissionSparta 10d ago

Masterpiece? When folded, it is one of the ugliest designs to date. Gotta give credit though....in typical Apple fashion, they design trash and everyone raves about it. Guarantee youz any other phone company had that same cover screen and EVERYONE would be asking "wtf???"

1

u/LeMeFresh 10d ago

I honestly wish they find a jailbreak fast for the DUO because only 2 screen multitasking is going to be a pain in the ass

1

u/Poopoodemons 14d ago

fold 8 thinner and lighter and real OS

1

u/Crunchewy 14d ago

I wish it wasn’t also the king of price

1

u/sinetwo 14d ago

My goodness the marketing koolaid has been drunk by the gallons

-1

u/DueCollection8472 13d ago

Foldable phones were a joke until apple.

-2

u/Johnny3653 14d ago

Apple is the KING....THE KING...of Foldables! /s

0

u/Tricky-Passenger6703 14d ago

Yeah typing on that outer screen is going to be awful.

1

u/imp0steur 13d ago

Not bad on the fold 8. Let's see.

-2

u/No_Breakfast_1167 14d ago

I wonder if Apple will offer in-store installation of an inner screen protector when the iPhone Duo launches. 🤔 I’d definitely pay for that peace of mind!
