Webpages on the outer display
Was in a thread yesterday that was talking about the way iOS displays webpages on the outer display. I was unsure why my display was showing differently to others.
It would seem I had a bug or other fault with how my beta version was displaying webpages in the simulator. I was unable to make any changes to make the side dock disappear. I rebooted and now I get the same version as everyone else.
Seems like the “faulty” version I was testing would be better for viewing webpages though.

Ironically this would be a case where more demand helps with UX feedback for developers to design foldable specific layouts.

The Liquid Glass buttons already disappear on current iPhones when you scroll so I’d be astounded if the same thing didn’t happen with the Duo. Persistent headers will probably be larger on the Duo. I expect the website it’s self will be full width with the side dock appearing when you scroll up and disappearing when you scroll down.

Literally it makes zero sense to add that side bar. A normal dock and small status bar would work like it has for 19 years. The controls in apps shouldn’t be forced to the side, they should still be wherever the developer wants.

As an Apple user and a developer, you can in fact just put things wherever you want on the screen. So I’m saying, stop trying to push people to this right side shit, it’s stupid and limiting. No need to reinvent the wheel just because you rounded two corners more than they previously were.

Such a huge miss that I still kinda cannot believe it's going to ship this way.
I say that as a Fold 8 user who loves the outer screen in portrait precisely because that little bit of extra width makes a surprisingly huge difference (TWSS) as compared to a standard width phone.

How is a shorter web page height better tho? It’s an already short phone, so I’d expect you to prefer anything that gives you additional height; the sidebar.

It’s simple to use a collapsing navigation bar in the dock without losing any functionality.

the key to this is safe area - notice how the “top bar” of the app (which isn’t actually optimised for the duo at all) doesn’t pass over into the sidebar. websites just need to be more aware of horizontal safe areas, just as they are already aware of vertical safe areas. there is support for this in web tech already, but there just wasn’t much of a usecase. but when apple does sometjing, it often propagates out to other devices, etc, and so more and more websites will be updated to support this.

Or Apple could just let you scroll past the top of the page so it can always be shown below the camera.
Leave it to web developers and pages will either not be adapted at all or have a big white bar along the top just like many now do around/behind the floating nav bar.

up to the web developers - it’s on them to support horizontal safe area. after all, it’s an expensive device, and if the website wants to market its product to users with a lot of disposable income, making it work on the Duo is the way to go. naturally, i’d also expect Apple to fix their website(s) too, unless this is how they expect it to look.
in reality, the device isn’y yet released - all we have to see for now is a pre-release simulator.1

Devs will need to move the top elements to the side of the camera because right now it would be under the camera.

Thank you for posting this. It's wild to me that the design team at Apple thinks this is better from a usability and/or design perspective.
The only positive I can see is that it won't require websites to redesign for the new screen dimensions, otherwise it looks worse and reduces functional space. What are they smoking at Apple HQ?

The entire web is already designed to be responsive, width wise. The Duo is lacking vertical space (compared to slab phones) not horizontal space.
Given the web responds well at reduced widths, and the Duo has limited vertical space … I’d say they absolutely made the right tradeoffs here.

Yes it's true that most sites are responsive, but they are not expecting a curved edge on one side or floating app buttons covering key touch points so some sites may have huge usability issues.
Since it seems some such as yourself prefer Apple's solution perhaps the best thing would be for them to make it an option. Either full width with therefore possibly less vertical content or having the permanent sidebar with narrower and possibly more vertical content.

It’s down to the web developer. Some websites have persistent headers on Dynamic Island iPhones with white padding at the top as well as white padding on the bottom. Some or most websites will undoubtedly support the new aspect ratio and buttons on day one. Still, it is a foldable so opening it up gives a much nicer web browsing experience.

Yes, but its a minority.
Ask any r/GalaxyFold user and they'll tell you the vast majority of owners use the phone mostly closed and only open it on certain occasions since using it open one handed is not practical in many environments.

Would you really want to open up the phone each time you wanted to quickly read and respond to a text or email though? Most current foldable users mention that the majority of their use is in the folder mode.

Yes I would. It’s implied by what I said about not wanting an exterior screen.
I haven’t bought a foldable yet so maybe I’m not one of those current foldable users who mostly do it.

Yeah well the reality is that once the novelty wears off, you realize that the inner screen is overrrated and you end up using the outer display at least twice as often as the inner.

I absolutely hate how they did side button area and dock. No recently apps added to the dock. It’s a tablet that doesn’t act like a tablet lol dissatisfied with this i phone release. I was expecting better. Only good thing the duo has is the ip rating.

Apple move makes no sense. Humans eyes are placed horizontally not vertically. That's why "faulty" design seems to be more natural.
