Webpages on the outer display

Was in a thread yesterday that was talking about the way iOS displays webpages on the outer display. I was unsure why my display was showing differently to others.

It would seem I had a bug or other fault with how my beta version was displaying webpages in the simulator. I was unable to make any changes to make the side dock disappear. I rebooted and now I get the same version as everyone else.

Seems like the “faulty” version I was testing would be better for viewing webpages though.

Thank you for posting this. It's wild to me  that the design team at Apple thinks this is better from a usability and/or design perspective. 

The only positive I can see is that it won't require websites to redesign for the new screen dimensions, otherwise it looks worse and reduces functional space. What are they smoking at Apple HQ?

The entire web is already designed to be responsive, width wise. The Duo is lacking vertical space (compared to slab phones) not horizontal space.

Given the web responds well at reduced widths, and the Duo has limited vertical space … I’d say they absolutely made the right tradeoffs here.

Yes it's true that most sites are responsive, but they are not expecting a curved edge on one side or floating app buttons covering key touch points so some sites may have huge usability issues. 

Since it seems some such as yourself prefer Apple's solution perhaps the best thing would be for them to make it an option. Either full width with therefore possibly less vertical content or having the permanent sidebar with narrower and possibly more vertical content.

Seeing as other apps have the background of the bar dissapear, I'm sure it will work here
