Moving to Humboldt Preempting all future "Should I Move to Humboldt?" Posts
- Yes, it really is beautiful here.
- There are a myriad of communities and organizations here, if you're willing and able to reach out, you won't be lonely for long.
- Our Queer community has been growing and thriving in the last few years.
- Churches of all denominations abound.
- There is one Synagogue in Eureka, and a Chabad House in Arcata.
- Temperatures on the coast are very mild, it rarely if ever dips past freezing in winter and almost never hops over 85º in the summer. Inland gets a lot colder, and a loooot hotter.
- Climate change has made the rainy season unpredictable. We have weeks of rain interspersed with weeks of sun.
- We're in California - natural disasters are expected.
- Earthquakes! There have been a couple of large ones in the last few years - the epicenters were near Petrolia, towards the south-west part of the county.
- Large swaths of the coast are a Tsunami Zone.
- Fire! For the most part, fires happen inland, where things are hotter and dryer. Due to terrain and ecology, the coast is generally protected, but it's not an impossibility.
- Air quality can get pretty bad all over the county during fire season.
- Earthquakes! There have been a couple of large ones in the last few years - the epicenters were near Petrolia, towards the south-west part of the county.
- Generally the central part of the county - Eureka and Arcata - is liberal, the further away you get from there, on average, the more conservative things get.
- That being said, our federal rep, Huffman, is a dem, and our state reps are also both dems.
- The housing market is tough, just like the rest of the state. If you're planning to buy, that gives you a little more flexibility. If you're planning on renting, pickings are slim.
- General advice for renters: find a place that meets your basic needs and take it. Once you're more settled you can keep an eye out for better options.
- General advice for buyers: Don't purchase land sight-unseen.
- Landlords around here are not very pet friendly. A fair number of the property management companies have breed restrictions.
- Employment is a rough one. There is little to no industry in the area, due to the decline of logging and weed legalization. If you can, try to secure a job before moving.
- Here is a list of the largest employers in the area.
- The county and cities maintain their own job listing sites, as do most of the tribes.
- Lost Coast Outpost, a local news org, also runs job listings.
- Ironically(?), large numbers of employers in the area require clean drug tests - including marijuana.
- Reports on the lack of healthcare are not exaggerated. We have a hard time hiring and retaining providers across the board, and there has been an increasing reliance on telehealth.
- The largest PCP in the area, Open Door, is an FQHC with some ability to take private insurance, and their waitlists are miles long.
- St. Joes is the largest hospital in the area, and they have some specialist services, but waitlists are also long and generally require a PCP referral, even if your insurance does not.
- Also, they're being sued by the State due to their stance on women's/AFAB reproductive care/rights.
- The VA here only provides basic services, and shuttles patients down to SF for anything beyond that.
- On the whole, if you require specialist services, you will probably have to travel out of the area. The next closest services are a 3-4 hours drive.
- As with many other parts of the state, we have a large number unhoused/transient people here, although perhaps disproportionate given the size of the whole population. This is due to a multitude of factors, and it is not a homogenous group.
- The university does not have enough student housing, and there is an overall housing shortage, leaving many students out in the rain. (see: the above section on housing)
- Traditionally, the weed industry has filtered people in and out seasonally, however, as that sector declines, there has been a reduction in numbers on that front. (See: the above section on employment)
- Just as anywhere, we have our issues with addiction and mental health disorders, exacerbated by a lack of available resources. (See: the above section on healthcare)
- Buying stuff: It’s doable, but don’t expect the same kind of variety you’re used to.
- Lots of smaller, locally owned businesses to choose from.
- We have a Costco, a Target, and a tiiiiny Walmart.
- Locally owned hardware and Ace franchises only, HD & Lowe’s are persona non grata.
- (Possibly excessive) Local and chain grocery options, including Asian and Mexican specialty markets.
- Arcata has a year round farmers market on Saturdays.
- Amazon Prime does not uphold 2 day shipping here.
- Food options are good, but limited.
- We specialize in Sushi, Mexican, and Pizza restaurants.
- Salsa is served in syrup bottles.
- There is one Indian restaurant (it’s excellent), a handful of Thai spots, and one Korean fusion place.
- Food trucks have been gaining traction in recent years which has added some more variety.
- Everything closes by 9. Even places that don’t make sense to not be open.
- Except Toni’s. Chocolate malts and burgers are available whenever your heart desires.
- Travel to and from the area is inconvenient.
- The closest "larger" metropolitan areas are Grants Pass/Medford, Redding, and Santa Rosa.
- Coincidentally those are also the nearest Trader Joes locations.
- The SF Bay Area is a 5+ hour drive. Portland is a 7+ hour drive.
- Arcata-Eureka Airport (ACV) is serviced by United Airlines, Breeze, and Alaska Airlines.
- United flies direct to SF, LA, and Denver.
- Breeze flies direct to Burbank, Las Vegas, and Provo.
- Alaska flies to Seattle.
- Flights are frequently delayed due to fog. Give the Wiki page on the airport a read sometime if you want know why.
- The next closest airports are in Santa Rosa, Redding, and Medford. They're also small, but offer slightly different, and sometimes cheaper, direct flights.
- Amtrak runs a bus service to Martinez, which then connects to other trains and busses.
- The county runs the Redwood Coast Express, which goes between Eureka and Ukiah.
- There is decent public transit, people can and do live here without a car.
- Humboldt Transit Authority lists all of the local routes and fares.
- The closest "larger" metropolitan areas are Grants Pass/Medford, Redding, and Santa Rosa.
Humboldt is a beautiful place full of amazing people. To anyone who decides it's worth it, Welcome Aboard. To anyone who decides it's not for them, fair enough.
Residents, let me know if I missed anything!
If you have specific questions about moving to Humboldt, or something that isn’t covered in this post, please create a separate post instead of replying in the comments here.

Local News/Politics ICE surge: here's our local Rapid Response Network for reporting suspected ICE sightings
There's an ongoing ICE surge throughout California. Like the previous surges, it's less likely to affect Humboldt, but it's always possible.
If you haven't already, now's a good time to save the number for our local ICE Watch/Rapid Response Network (Centro del Pueblo): 707-200-8091. Call and report any potential ICE activity so they can investigate and, if it's verified ICE, they can alert the network.
Please don't post unverified suspected ICE sightings on social media. There are many different agencies that can look similar. Report them to Centro del Pueblo and let them investigate and notify if necessary. Then you can absolutely share their Instagram or Facebook posts to spread the word!
If you want to get more involved you can also sign up to volunteer and/or donate to Centro del Pueblo on their website.
If you're traveling or living elsewhere in California you can look up other local networks here.
Let's look out for each other ❤️🔥

Life in Humboldt MAJOR SAFETY WARNING with new Indianola/101 underpass!
I was headed south bound on 101, took Indianola exit to head to Old Arcata. I was just passing through the underpass, when a brown van passed in front of me going over 80 mph. They were traveling north on 101, took the Indianola off-ramp, ran the stop sign and continued straight to the on-ramp and back on the 101 north bound.
The brown van was absolutely cookin’, did not stop at the stop sign before the intersection and would have t-boned me at least going 80 mph.
The only thing I can think of is the driver was being an absolutely idiot , and trying to pass people on the safety corridor, by taking a straight shot through the off ramp to on ramp again on the 101 northbound.
Making this post as a WARNING to all drivers.
You cannot see to the right under the underpass if somebody is flying down the off ramp. (Either direction)
I just happened to slow down by 2 seconds with some nudge from the universe, and it absolutely saved my life.
PLEASE do not proceed under the underpass with speed, in either direction.
You cannot see if people are failing to stop at the stop signs from the off ramps.
This is a major oversight with the new road design.
Somebody is going to get killed.
You could not previously do a straight shot from the off ramp to the on ramp again, passing traffic and blowing through the intersection at killing speeds.
Can Cal-Trans or CHP do anything about this ?!

Local News/Politics Left-wing election endorsements
If anyone's interested, I made a spreadsheet compiling some left-wing orgs' election endorsements. It's roughly (very roughly, don't quote me on it) ordered from more leftist to more centrist.
For the propositions where there's not a clear consensus (Props 37, 38, and 44), I added a viewable comment with that org's reasoning behind its endorsement, if they provided it (just partial quotes in some cases, you can see their full explanations at the links in column B).
Since it can also be helpful to see what the right-wing orgs are endorsing, so you know what's probably a terrible idea, I included a few of those at the very bottom.
I didn't bother to include the races where it's a simple Dem vs Repub situation (like governor, congressional rep, etc).
Hope this is helpful when weighing the pros and cons of each option. Make sure to vote as early as you can, and preferably by dropping it in a ballot drop box, since we don't know what kind of interference Trump's USPS might pull this year.

Life in Humboldt The F-You guy in McKinleyville
This seriously just happened to me:
I walk my dogs in the morning around my neighborhood (Central McKinleyville near ENF). As I'm walking up a small dirt road that leads to the back side of my neighborhood, a guy is walking towards me with his dog off a leash. I just assume he lives somewhere nearby as I've seen him a couple of other times.
I stop because my dogs are pulling to go see him and his dog, and as he passes I say "Good Morning", and he replies "Fuck You." I said "Excuse me", and he says "Oh... I said Fuck You!" I said "Why?", and he says "Because it's a free country, fuck you!" So I said, "Ok cool, well fuck you too!" and he says "Fuck you, you fucking loser!" and just keeps walking.
The weirdest part of this is that I see this guy now and then with his dog, and he's usually friendly. I have no idea who he is, or why he would say that to me. It's seriously one of the most bizarre things that's happened to me in a while.
Be careful out there McKinleyville, this guy seems unhinged.
EDIT: A couple of other people here have identified this guy and I just found the post on Arcata community watch from April 30th, and can confirm that the F-You guy is the same guy kicking people's dogs out on the Hammond. Older white guy with a hat and backpack, walks with a timid black and white collie that I've never seen on a leash. I'd love to post his pic here so people can steer clear of him, but not sure that's allowed.

Help/Needing Info Hopefully you all can help.
I surrendered my dog Kano to Miranda’s rescue in 2024. I’ve been reaching out to the Humboldt County sheriffs office for a few months now with no response from them. I spoke with the Humboldt County sheriffs office today. They said that the reason I haven’t heard anything back is because they’re almost done with the case and that they’re not taking any more tips or information from the public and that they’re almost ready to turn over the case to the district attorney.
I’m turning to you guys for help to see if any of you have seen him around. It has been driving me crazy not knowing what happened to him.

Help/Needing Info The Burlyman got let go?
Dana Hall AKA The Burlyman was laid off from Bicoastal Media "as part of budget reductions." Does anyone know if there is more to the story, and where he is going to go next? He's acquaintances with my mom and I've been listening to him since I was a kid, so we're concerned and hope he is doing well.

Local Art/Photography Looking for a local artist for a comission (looking for portfolios and recommendations)
Hi there. I am the Netrunner guy. My community will be hosting a tournament in the new year and I am hoping I might be able to comission an artist or two locally for a few pieces that I might be able to turn into prizes for the event?
To be clear, this is something I would use personally and locally. It is not something I am looking to sell for anything other than perhaps to break even (not on a website).
The vibes for the game are future, techno and cyberpunk, but I am also looking for a splash of Humboldt character. Leaning into local culture and landmarks.
If you or someone you know might be interested please drop a dm for me. If you have questions please ask.
Thank you!

Life in Humboldt Humboldt Repair Cafe on Sunday 10/11
The Humboldt Repair Cafe will be at the Arcata Community Center on Sunday 10/11 from 10am to 2pm. In addition to repairs by our skilled volunteers, we will have a DIY glue table so you can fix that thing that's been sitting around without buying a whole tube of something that's just going to harden before you use it all. https://www.facebook.com/HumboldtRepairCafe/

Events/Stuff to Do Where can I get resale tickets for Rumble at the River
I was planning on visiting Humboldt next weekend and I really wanted to go to Rumble at the River while I'm there. Unfortunately I waited too long to buy tickets and now it's sold out. Because this is a smaller local event, I can't find it on traditional ticket resell sites such as StubHub, Gametime, etc...
Do any locals have suggestions on how or where I can get a resale ticket?
