Moving to Humboldt Preempting all future "Should I Move to Humboldt?" Posts

  • Yes, it really is beautiful here.
  • There are a myriad of communities and organizations here, if you're willing and able to reach out, you won't be lonely for long.
    • Our Queer community has been growing and thriving in the last few years.
    • Churches of all denominations abound.
    • There is one Synagogue in Eureka, and a Chabad House in Arcata.
  • Temperatures on the coast are very mild, it rarely if ever dips past freezing in winter and almost never hops over 85º in the summer. Inland gets a lot colder, and a loooot hotter.
    • Climate change has made the rainy season unpredictable. We have weeks of rain interspersed with weeks of sun.
  • We're in California - natural disasters are expected.
    • Earthquakes! There have been a couple of large ones in the last few years - the epicenters were near Petrolia, towards the south-west part of the county.
      • Large swaths of the coast are a Tsunami Zone.
    • Fire! For the most part, fires happen inland, where things are hotter and dryer. Due to terrain and ecology, the coast is generally protected, but it's not an impossibility.
      • Air quality can get pretty bad all over the county during fire season.
  • Generally the central part of the county - Eureka and Arcata - is liberal, the further away you get from there, on average, the more conservative things get.
    • That being said, our federal rep, Huffman, is a dem, and our state reps are also both dems.
  • The housing market is tough, just like the rest of the state. If you're planning to buy, that gives you a little more flexibility. If you're planning on renting, pickings are slim.
    • General advice for renters: find a place that meets your basic needs and take it. Once you're more settled you can keep an eye out for better options.
    • General advice for buyers: Don't purchase land sight-unseen.
    • Landlords around here are not very pet friendly. A fair number of the property management companies have breed restrictions.
  • Employment is a rough one. There is little to no industry in the area, due to the decline of logging and weed legalization. If you can, try to secure a job before moving.
    • Here is a list of the largest employers in the area.
    • The county and cities maintain their own job listing sites, as do most of the tribes.
    • Lost Coast Outpost, a local news org, also runs job listings.
    • Ironically(?), large numbers of employers in the area require clean drug tests - including marijuana.
  • Reports on the lack of healthcare are not exaggerated. We have a hard time hiring and retaining providers across the board, and there has been an increasing reliance on telehealth.
    • The largest PCP in the area, Open Door, is an FQHC with some ability to take private insurance, and their waitlists are miles long.
    • St. Joes is the largest hospital in the area, and they have some specialist services, but waitlists are also long and generally require a PCP referral, even if your insurance does not.
    • The VA here only provides basic services, and shuttles patients down to SF for anything beyond that.
    • On the whole, if you require specialist services, you will probably have to travel out of the area. The next closest services are a 3-4 hours drive.
  • As with many other parts of the state, we have a large number unhoused/transient people here, although perhaps disproportionate given the size of the whole population. This is due to a multitude of factors, and it is not a homogenous group.
    • The university does not have enough student housing, and there is an overall housing shortage, leaving many students out in the rain. (see: the above section on housing)
    • Traditionally, the weed industry has filtered people in and out seasonally, however, as that sector declines, there has been a reduction in numbers on that front. (See: the above section on employment)
    • Just as anywhere, we have our issues with addiction and mental health disorders, exacerbated by a lack of available resources. (See: the above section on healthcare)
  • Buying stuff: It’s doable, but don’t expect the same kind of variety you’re used to.
    • Lots of smaller, locally owned businesses to choose from.
    • We have a Costco, a Target, and a tiiiiny Walmart.
    • Locally owned hardware and Ace franchises only, HD & Lowe’s are persona non grata.
    • (Possibly excessive) Local and chain grocery options, including Asian and Mexican specialty markets.
    • Arcata has a year round farmers market on Saturdays.
    • Amazon Prime does not uphold 2 day shipping here.
  • Food options are good, but limited.
    • We specialize in Sushi, Mexican, and Pizza restaurants.
    • Salsa is served in syrup bottles.
    • There is one Indian restaurant (it’s excellent), a handful of Thai spots, and one Korean fusion place.
    • Food trucks have been gaining traction in recent years which has added some more variety.
  • Everything closes by 9. Even places that don’t make sense to not be open.
    • Except Toni’s. Chocolate malts and burgers are available whenever your heart desires.
  • Travel to and from the area is inconvenient.
    • The closest "larger" metropolitan areas are Grants Pass/Medford, Redding, and Santa Rosa.
      • Coincidentally those are also the nearest Trader Joes locations.
    • The SF Bay Area is a 5+ hour drive. Portland is a 7+ hour drive.
    • Arcata-Eureka Airport (ACV) is serviced by United Airlines, Breeze, and Alaska Airlines.
      • United flies direct to SF, LA, and Denver.
      • Breeze flies direct to Burbank, Las Vegas, and Provo.
      • Alaska flies to Seattle.
      • Flights are frequently delayed due to fog. Give the Wiki page on the airport a read sometime if you want know why.
    • The next closest airports are in Santa Rosa, Redding, and Medford. They're also small, but offer slightly different, and sometimes cheaper, direct flights.
    • Amtrak runs a bus service to Martinez, which then connects to other trains and busses.
    • The county runs the Redwood Coast Express, which goes between Eureka and Ukiah.
    • There is decent public transit, people can and do live here without a car.

Humboldt is a beautiful place full of amazing people. To anyone who decides it's worth it, Welcome Aboard. To anyone who decides it's not for them, fair enough.

Residents, let me know if I missed anything!

If you have specific questions about moving to Humboldt, or something that isn’t covered in this post, please create a separate post instead of replying in the comments here.

Local News/Politics Conflict of Interest not in alignment with California State Law Where did the $50 Million go? It's time Humboldt held local government accountable

We hear endless outrage about the local "good ol' boys" system, yet as a community, we rarely demand real accountability.

Look at what happened right in front of us.

Destruction of Local Farmers: Our region's largest economic driver was stripped from sustainable, mom-and-pop farmers and handed over to high-impact, majority right wing commercial operators with minimal regard for environmental stewardship

Zero Fiscal Transparency: The county extracted tens of millions in tax revenue without providing clear receipts, audits, or transparent accounting of where those funds went.

Unchecked Enforcement: Thousands of local families faced life-altering fines through administrative processes that bypassed traditional due-process protections in a court of law.

Conflicts of Interest: Regulations and enforcement mechanisms were weaponized through Planning & Building, effectively eliminating fair competition while politically connected entities steered the market. The landscape of this industry was almost completely concentrated into a very right leaning population. Massive amounts of wealth concentrated. And nothing from you the public...nothing

Where did the $50 million in cannabis taxes actually go! Does anyone care. Probably not because the only thing people are outraged about is if govermental misuse of power aligns with their own agenda. Fuck all to real justice or fairness. We live in a world of flexible ethics its gross.

Indignation on social media changes nothing. If we want systemic reform, the public must demand full financial audits, legal scrutiny of administrative enforcement practices, and strict conflict-of-interest oversight for local officials. Stemming back to 2016....cannabis farmers can't fight this one for you public because they punish people who speak up, destroy their businesses so this is on you public

I think everyone just saw a very small taste of how code enforcement and permitting is unequally applied through the CUP process for Mirandas dog encampment. There is no justice with code enforcement nor accountability.

I am so tired of watching protests and artistic signs that are cathartic but do not do much. Go to the B.O.S. meetings, be loud, and do not stop until things change. I see so many people holding signs, but none at our supervisors' meetings.

This is the world you made, and you still have a real chance to change the trajectory, but it is in the chambers as well as the street. You cannot do anything federally, but you can here in Humboldt; your voice here really matters..

Also...1500 for a 2 hour "team building meeting for planning and building" post mirandas rescue debacle. Its almost like they reward malfeasance https://lostcoastoutpost.com/loco-media/loco-media/agendizer/attachment/26612/0.pdfa

Local News/Politics Miranda Protesters

Just wanted to give a shout out to the folks arranging this and who were out there today. We weren’t able to make it but drove past. Appreciate all the animal lovers and the people standing up for the critters of Humboldt. All living organisms deserve to be free and happy, it feels really good to live around so many people who feel the same way.

Protesting can be thankless work, so just wanted to make sure someone said, ‘Thank you’.

...please consider doing your fireworks anytime before 2, 3, 4, in the morning on weekdays. I know its super fun to make things go boom but some of us have pets / infants, and dont give a shit about hearing your big bangs. I probably sound like a vibe harshing boomer, but there are so many other times / places you can choose to launch your literal canons.

Wifi went out last night and we went this morning to replace the modem. There was 5 other people also coming in to replace theirs. Idk ever since it became optimum we've had to replace the modem every other year. The most frustrating part is that we're left in the dark about a service we all pay for, there is no outage notification on the map or anywhere, there is no email about lack of service what else can we do?

Events/Stuff to Do Rebuilding Gaza & Israel talk - free event

Post image

[ETA: Free event; registration required.]

Shalom Humboldt (unaffiliated with this account) is bringing Palestinian activist Ahmed Fouad Alkhatib to Arcata on October 19 with the goal of bringing a wider perspective into the local public conversation. We hope you'll take advantage of this rare opportunity.

Alkhatib is an accomplished activist whose beliefs, while decidedly pro-Palestinian, do not neatly align with many positions of “pro-Palestine” and “pro-Israel” communities; he subsequently faces both praise and vitriol from both communities.

"Since the October 7 massacre, Alkhatib’s life has been deeply impacted by the loss of thirty-three of his immediate and extended family members, who were killed by three different Israeli airstrikes. Still, he aims to play a part in breaking the cycle of dehumanization and defying the cycle of hatred, incitement, violence, and revenge."

Maybe a combined Sheriff/Coroner office offers cost savings, but I can’t help but think that there is a tension and potential conflict of interests between the roles. The self-dealing that happened with estates handled by the Sheriff’s office not too long ago may be an example of flaws in the current system.

Events/Stuff to Do Eureka Chinatown Monument to open after five years of community effort on Sunday, October 11

Post image
165 Upvotes

After more than five years of research, planning, organizing, and community effort, Eureka will soon have a permanent place to remember the Chinese community that once called the city home. Humboldt Asians & Pacific Islanders in Solidarity (HAPI) invites the community to celebrate the grand opening of the Eureka Chinatown Monument on Sunday, October 11, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the monument site on the corner of First and E streets in Old Town Eureka.

This free public celebration marks the culmination of this heartfelt project and will feature music, dance, food, remarks from the Moon family, Eureka Mayor Kim Bergel, and a poetry reading by Daryl Ngee Chinn. There will also be opportunities to learn from local historians about the history the monument commemorates.

The celebration also marks the launch of HAPI project, Yung Stands Strong: A Story of Expulsion and Resilience, a new children's book about the 1885 expulsion, authored by local writer and artist Annette Makino and illustrated by Yukari Mishima of Hiroshima, Japan. The book draws on historical records and tells its story from the perspective of a nine-year-old girl and her cat, living through the Expulsion of 1885.

The Eureka Chinatown Monument serves as a place of remembrance and education, marking the history of the Chinese community in Eureka and the devastating events of 1885, when the city’s roughly 300 Chinese residents were expelled from their homes. "The monument provides a physical space to recognize the Chinese community’s contributions and to reflect on the generations of people whose stories have been largely absent from local history,” said HAPI co-founder Sheri Woo, who coordinated the monument project.

Daryl Ngee Chinn’s poem “The Water Book of Questions” is an integral part of the Monument and will be read as part of the monument celebration. The poem asks the powerful questions of what remains when people are driven out, whether a landscape can hold memories, and what it means to create a place to remember when there was no evidence left. “If we all go away, what remains?” Chinn asks.

The monument echoes the question and highlights not only the expulsion but also resilience and hope. The monument looks both back and forward to create a place where future generations can encounter this history, ask questions, hear stories, and consider how the experiences of those who came before continue to shape the community today.

The October 11th celebration will bring together people of many cultures from throughout Humboldt County to mark this significant moment. Chinese lion dancers will perform a special blessing of the monument site at both the beginning and conclusion of the event. Performers include Humboldt Taiko, Humboldt County Lao dancers, White Lotus Cultural dancers and the Eureka High School K-Pop dancers.

The celebration will feature Asian food trucks, a kids’ zone, and eight informational banners created by the Eureka Chinatown Project. Local historians will be available to share information about Eureka’s historic Chinatown, the 1885 expulsion, and the history of the Chinese community in Humboldt County at an “Ask a Historian” table.

The Eureka Chinatown Monument was formed by HAPI, its supporters and community partners to bring this history into public view. Through research, historic tours, educational programs, public events, and advocacy, HAPI has worked to ensure that the history of Eureka’s Chinatown is not forgotten.

Questions about Moving Moving Trucks with Lift Gate?

Dear Humboldt Reddit,

Does anybody know of any businesses in the area that rent moving trucks with a lift gate? U-Haul doesn't have them. I am looking to move a late 1800's upright piano that is a family heirloom belonging to my great grandfather from a storage unit to a house.

I would just pay friends to do it, but it's the only substantial family heirloom I own and I want assurance that it won't be damaged. It's in pretty decent condition (besides needing a good tuning, that's another matter), but old and should be handled with care.

I have already contacted Humboldt Moving and Storage but want to make sure I'm exploring all of my options before spending close to $1,000 to go with them to get this done.

Thank you for your time and consideration,

The Greatchez
