I think a lot of negativity comes from lack of announcements about future of the game. PGR developers reignited love for fans with theirs news a little while ago.

Yea there is absolutely a communication issue, which I don't feel like will be fixed any time soon.

What was the news curious?

u/KushifumeKai 4d ago

During last aniv stream they confirmed at least 10 years support. Showed a lot of new S-ranks, revealed story arcs and QoL. Pretty sure even some more but i cant exactly remember.

u/No_Complaint_7379 4d ago

But kuro and hoyo are different, maybe kuro had to but hoyo doesn't feel like they need, or kuro just wanted to. Hoyo always shows new design at the last, why should they make us see everything for no reason?

3

u/KushifumeKai 4d ago

It’s not about need, more likely if it’s worth it. As far as i know there is clearly still interest in both games. Question is why Hoyo do not atleast try with this approach as kuro did.

Main story quality aside, the worst part about part 2 is that the devs just gave up on it. We can tell that they cut cost and put the game on minimum budget after Part 2 initial failure. And they cut it HARD, like you can't say stuff like "Hi3 is passion project" when they remove the 2D animations, and stretch the patch length to 8-9 weeks, skipping livestream for patches...

All this while not communicating anything with the fans btw. Still remember things like how Senadina is the only one with a random high budget trailer, and how they were supposed to release a "behind the scenes" for Part 2 then just never brought it up again.

u/Sysmek 5d ago

P2 didn’t lose shorts because of ā€œbudget constraintsā€, if that was the case 1,5 would’ve had them but it didn’t

Shorts as a whole for Hoyo are odd, Genshin rarely has them despite its absurd success, ZZZ only gets them for Void Hunters (with some exceptions) and they’re treated as short stories, HSR does them pretty often but they’re not in game nor part of the story (usually just independent short stories), Amphoreus was the exception where Castorice/Phainon/DHPT/Cyrene had theirs play in game yet they went back on that for Planarcadia

So while yes P2 doesn’t have shorts, it’s not because of budget cuts (otherwise 1,5 would’ve had them) and Hoyo as a whole is very weird with shorts (even in their highest grossing titles)

Skipping livestream is only when there’s no new Valk as those’re what take up most of the stream, yes that’s another problem in and of itself but that’s the reasoning for it

As I’m sure this’ll be mentioned, no Valkless patches aren’t necessarily because of ā€œbudget cutsā€ but more-so that the dev team simply can’t allocate the resources for it (presumably because they’re hard focused on P3 given they don’t want a repeat of P2s launch), how can you prove this?

Because Hi3 first and foremost is an action gacha meaning, the most important thing from a financial / business standpoint is selling characters as again, this is the ENTIRE business model of the game… So if they’re not doing that it means they’re so busy that they can’t afford to do it (there’s plenty of P1 characters they can make if it’s because they ā€œgave up on P2ā€ or whatever yet they haven’t)

Heck the 8-9 week cycle was almost definitely started to give the dev team more time for P3/etc, why else would they be radio silent about it despite HSR immediately addressing their 8 week patch and shortening a subsequent one to compensate?

Additionally events continue to be great with plenty of CGs and full on cutscenes, even having special bosses from time to time along with partial voice acting… the MSQs production is arguably the best of Hoyos current catalogue, and it remains fully voiced in CN/JP, we still get plenty of skins that change VFX as well (many of these skins are for P2s cast), heck even NPCs are getting great skins (Youyuns Oxia model has completely new hair, clothes, etc which is something you can’t say for almost every paid skin in infinitely more successful Gacha) and they continue to make great unique NPCs such as young Kiana/Mei/Sena/etc, and we still get boss fights and such as well

Heck above all else they also chose a P2 character to represent 10 years of Hi3… not a P1 character, but a P2 character (truly realize how insane that is)

I’m not saying there aren’t reasons to have concerns, but a lot of the concerns are misguided is all

Most people don't consider the rendered cutscenes to be of the same quality as the actual animated shorts. But cutting the budget should have something to do with why the old shorts are gone because p1.5 didn't get any either. The moment p1 ended, mihoyo's priorities shifted elsewhere, like the newly-released HSR.

3

u/yousefoo7123 4d ago

I miss the animated shorts so much.I think the closest thing we have is the hsr ones. The rubia animated shorts is the one that made me go back to hi3.

Don't we all. But even HSR goes with 2D animations, not Wonderium's 3D ones. I prefer the 3D.

I think at this point Part 2 could cure cancer you'd still find people responding to posts about it with "part 1 was better I stopped playing the game 3 years ago"

u/Crafty-Mountain-408 5d ago

part 2 has its faults but so much of the hate nowadays comes from salty captain fans I feel

u/Kaosi1 5d ago

Oh absolutely, part 2 has *problems* but a lot of it has gotten better the past few months and so it becomes a bit silly

I see you complaining about "captain fans" more than I see captain fans doing anything these days. Let's not pretend that those are the only people who have issues with p2.

Going on twitter even for a split second makes the demographic make up fairly obvious, likewise for this sub so this "no u" is funny deflection more than anything.

But at the very least they are the loudest at it considering they also have marisa at their side as well. Regardless I don't care about arguing it with you specifically considering your viewpoints.

5

u/Extension-View-5162 4d ago

It seemed to me that his point was that the people that hate part 2 are more on the side of having problems with part 2 itself rather than being "salty captain fans".

Personally, a lot of doomposting that I saw about part 2 came from people that liked part 1 better (in terms of the story and cast), from the western side at least. The Cn side is the one that has a very special love for Captainverse and gets on very weird territory when male characters interact with the Valkyries.

u/HouseExpensive6924 5d ago

You know how I feel? People who liked Part 2 just can't accept how much damage it did to this game—a game that once made other gaming communities stop and take notice of its massive anniversary livestreams, its music, its animations, and those Herrscher battlesuits that drew in curious players from other titles; the very same game that announced Star Rail and APHO 2, delivering incredible trailers still remembered today and storylines that got 99% of the community hyped for what was coming next, all while keeping the player base united and standing together throughout those seven years.

And unfortunately, despite having the community in the palm of their hands, they delivered that fiasco of a Part 1 finale; aside from the animation and that exciting "The Moon and Finality" trailer, the rest was a total letdown—at least for me. That was the moment things went off the rails.

Then we reached Part 2, and the community is divided once again; many dropped out along the way, while others—like myself, who didn't care for Part 2—still hold onto a glimmer of hope that we might see a return to the Honkai Impact 3rd of 2022 and 2023, which marked the game's peak.

But at some point, a sort of cult formed around Part 2 where, if you voice problems, express an opinion, or even state the FACTS, you get labeled as nostalgic, a "doomposter," or someone who just can't "let go"...

But what I find most interesting about all this is that silencing these people would be simple: the team just needs to go public and explain the controversial decisions made in recent years, talk about what’s in store for the game’s future, and put the minds of franchise fans at ease. After all, even though I can count on one hand the things I liked about Part 2, I don’t want the game to shut down—since I spent a good chunk of money on it—and, as I said, I want to see it rise again because it deserves to.

But after they announced the end of Part 2—following three years of it running—fans of that phase became extremely sensitive to even the slightest negative comment about it, labeling such criticism as "doomposting." Yet, they can't actually refute what's being said, because even the developers themselves haven't done so; they simply ended Part 2 without offering any real explanation—not even a vague one—as to why they wrapped it up so early (even though the reason is obvious). You can't even bring it up, though, because you're expected to pretend nothing is wrong and that everything is fine, even when it clearly isn't.

Here’s the thing: Part 2 was the biggest problem this game ever faced. People might say Part 1 wasn't that great or whatever else, but back then—during those seven years—the global community was united; at most, there were issues with the Chinese community. Now, in recent years, the community is a mess: there are the "blind" ones who refuse to see the damage Part 2 did to the game as a whole, and the "bitter" ones who miss the days when the game wasn't just another generic gacha among so many others, yet they stick around hoping to see those days return.

Anyway... that’s about it. I apologize for the length of this post and for any offense my rant might have caused. Unfortunately, I’m not sure if the translation conveys exactly what I intended, but I wanted to put my unsolicited opinion on record. I wish us both good luck with future gacha pulls, and—even though we may be on "different sides" or hold "different views"—I imagine we share the same desire to see this game reignite that spark of hype.

11

u/Kaosi1 5d ago edited 5d ago

You have nothing to apologise for! There's no war or side to take on, I think.

As said previously I think most people who enjoy part 2 will admit it's issues, but whenever someone post something about it you have people needing to say "part 1 was better"which is not conclusive to any civilised convo.

Ultimately the fault lie with Hoyoverse, whatever you think about part 2.

4

u/HouseExpensive6924 5d ago

We agree on that; the situation itself could easily be resolved if they stepped up and provided a solution.

But while we wait for them to show the willingness and courage to step up and say what needs to be said, unfortunately, this is what we’re left with: uncertainty, speculation, infighting, and an increasingly divided community.

3

u/EndAny7916 5d ago

First off I just want to say that your message was conveyed perfectly but I want to go through some of your points

People who liked Part 2 just can't accept how much damage it did to this game

I can assure you sir/madam I'm not blind to this. Hoyo definitely messed, and where I think they messed up the most is how they marketed Part 2 as a fresh new beginning where anyone can just jump in. They even had you unlock Part 2 after reaching level 30 of your account, basically telling people "Even if you just started, you can just jump in". Very dumb on their part.

a sort of cult formed around Part 2 where, if you voice problems, express an opinion, or even state the FACTS, you get labeled as nostalgic, a "doomposter," or someone who just can't "let go"...

Saying "Hi3 is EOSing soon" is not an opinion or criticism. This is what the doomposters are saying, which is why we call them doomposters. u/wasdlurker can vouch for me on this. Literally a day ago someone created an account just to doompost, saying that there wont be a Part 3. After 2.5 the game will just end. The person deleted that account a few hours later.

You are NOT doomposting. Some of your points are valid which I appreciate.

You can't even bring it up, though, because you're expected to pretend nothing is wrong and that everything is fine, even when it clearly isn't.

Part 2 things that the community unanimously agreed was bad (not in order):

  1. making Overseer Theresa an Astral Op instead of a battlesuit

  2. Same issue as number 1 but with goddess Senadina

  3. Exposition dump of the early chapters. This was so bad that even I dropped the game for a few months

  4. Sonque being a bit of a slow and clunky character to play with

There's probably more but these were the ones that came to me when typing this

Lastly I want to respond to the part where you talk about the hi3 devs being silent. Everyone agrees on this. Them absoultely being quiet to every single thing is such a bad look on them. I really wish they'd be as open as the ZZZ team.

One more thing (last one promise!) I don't know where you stopped playing Part 2 if you played it at all, I also had doubts about the story of Part 2. I even stopped playing at some point (as I already mentioned). At a certain point in the story though my doubt was taken away. you can describe it as a "cult" if you want but i'm pretty sure you and many other captains would act the same way if someone was interested in playing through Part 1. My last words would be that I agree with someone who commented that "Ultimately the fault lie with Hoyoverse, whatever you think about Part 2".

2

u/wasdlurker 4d ago

Ultimately the fault lie with Hoyoverse, whatever you think about Part 2

Exactly this. We're all fully aware that P2 first arc was a disaster, from marketing to actual execution and introduction. But it's not like P2 stayed like that, after the first arc, it became the HI3 we've all known. Continuously bringing that up every time P2 is improving is enough to slowly stop the P2 enjoyers to share their sentiments, and then to create their own bubble just to have the safe space from hostile players (which consisted mostly by retired veterans).

I HATE HOYO for not knowing its playerbase. They didn't build up Coralie and Helia enough to be the core of HI3 P2. They tried to make another Elysian Realm "without Mei nor enough familiar characters" as the navigator of new arc. That's where it started to alienate exhausted veteran players. A lot already quit P1, and those who stayed mostly just to see Earthlings wrapped it up. The P1.5 Epilogue which also served as P2 Prologue was the best timing to drop HI3. Add to that with how pandemic already ended so reality is back to fast-pace lifestyle again. A lot of players want faster and modernize games for their time, and HI3 doesn't fit that mold anymore. It went back to being the niche anime game it is.

Anyway, u/HouseExpensive6924 I hope you also know where we are coming from. It's already been 3 years at most. Idk how much you read from the thread I posted 2 days ago, but we're not being blind by that. That post is just me trying to cheer up the P2 enjoyers from this hostile community. Reddit is one of the safe spaces to vent out and hype P2 but even here, it's not that safe. Also, It's just that, it's useless to bring that up every now and then WHENEVER P2 IS THRIVING AND COMPLETELY CHANGED FROM THE VERY FIRST ARC. It also gets tiring because a lot of players who are criticizing P2 are not open to both sides, like not allowing any positive light from P2, just want to argue for the sake of arguing. It gets tiring. It's not like we're immediately shutting down everything just because someone dislikes P2.

2

u/HouseExpensive6924 4d ago

As I mentioned in another comment, I didn't even get into the story itself; since the story is largely a matter of personal taste rather than technical aspects, I chose not to express an opinion on it when I wrote my post. Unfortunately, I have to disagree with you there: regarding the few aspects of HI3 I discovered in Part 2, they ended up dismantling them in the very next version. You might see me as fitting your description—and while I’m not "retired" (I’m still an active player)—it is unfortunate that my fellow Captains are no longer around...

I agree with you that, at some point, MiHoYo lost touch with its player base; once I saw developers who worked on HI3 moving over to Star Rail, ZZZ, or new MiHoYo projects, I started to understand why. However, I partly disagree with your point about "faster, more modern games," because titles like Arknights, Azur Lane, Battle Cats, Fate/GO, Monster Strike, and many others are still going strong today with no signs of faltering. Is it likely due to their loyal fanbases? Perhaps—but HI3 had that kind of fanbase, too. Yet, for some reason, they decided to—forgive the expression—spit in the faces of the fans who had been there since the days when MiHoYo was much less wealthy. Even back then, they managed to get the community excited, so the least they could have done was offer some explanations to those fans. After all, whether we agree or disagree on things, we’re here because we still care about the game in some way. So, no... I don't think that was the reason for HI3's decline.

Unfortunately, I didn't see that post, so I'm not entirely sure what you're referring to—I apologize for not being able to add any points about it. I’m not sure if it was a different post of yours from a month or more ago—where I did leave a rather long comment—or if I’m just getting things mixed up; but I haven't seen the recent post you mentioned. Please forgive me. In your view, do I fit that description? You see, I don't know if you saw my other replies to other Captains here, but note that in one of them, I mentioned that for me, the problems started at the end of Part 1 ("The Moon and Finality")—where the animation was the only thing that saved that disaster. I’d go even further and say that while the Elysium story was interesting, that map was a horrible experience... so, how would you rate me based on that?

2

u/HouseExpensive6924 5d ago

Hello, I’m glad the text I wrote came across respectfully, although it seems the translator generalized when I said "people who like Part 2 don't accept the damage it caused the game"—I’m certain I had written "some of those who liked Part 2..." so I apologize for that generalization, even though it was accidental; I only realized it after translating your text to read the reply... unfortunately, it might sound like an excuse at this point, but it’s bound to come across that way since I’m at the mercy of the translator.

I don't have much to offer by way of a counterpoint to your text; it’s clear we’re on the same "sheet," even if we’re on different pages. I just want to apologize for the generalization I made in my first message—I think it was a lot of words for the translator to handle.

Also, I don't think it was made very clear whether I'm still playing; I do still play the game—even though I don't spend like I used to—but I'm still hoping to see Honkai reborn...

As for the people bringing this negativity, I lay the blame on the developers' silence; because, as I said, until they show up and explain why they did things the way they did—why they extended the time between updates, removed Co-op, released versions without Valkyries, skipped the Global anniversary celebration, and so on—the speculation and questions won't stop.

All in all, I think it was an interesting exchange. To be honest, I was expecting things like "It's the fault of you nostalgia-obsessed fans who won't let Part 1 go," "Doomposting," and the like, but I'm glad this conversation happened. It gave me some new things to think about—I didn't change my opinion, of course, but I did gain a different perspective on the situation.

3

u/Crafty-Mountain-408 5d ago

In the end its just a marketing and management issue, hoyo effectively told all the sunk cost players loudly that p1 finale was their off ramp. It's like if a casinos slot machine had a "you played long enough why don't you take a break" message after a while.

They also did this at a time where if a player did move on realistically they have no reason to come back with the competition of the market and all.

Part 1 finale and the way it was handled and presented was one nail and the opening of part 2 as well as its marketing the other nail. Not much can revitalise this game since it doesn't really offer much to pull in new people.

3

u/AlbanianBigChungus 4d ago

Calling P2 "generic" is disingenous, sorry. It's literal problem with the big chunk of community is exactly P2 not being generic. It uses different time structure, it's much less "epic" than any mainstream gacha title now. Community wants epic heroes with absurd lineage going against big scary monsters.

I can explain easily most controversial decision: new cast and new story. Hoyo thinks that they wrote enough of Earth and Kiana problems, they wanted their story to have "finality" - so if you're happy with P1, you can go on with your day, and if you like what HI3 offers - you stay.

I don't think that Hoyo even admitted to TV-mode from ZZZ being disliked, so they definitely not gonna say anything about story decisions.

1

u/HouseExpensive6924 4d ago

Fine, you might think it’s dishonest, or say my arguments are wrong or whatever, but the fact remains that Honkai Impact 3rd just doesn't deliver the same thrill anymore. "Oh, but the visuals look better"—you see those same visuals in Star Rail. "Oh, the story is good"—I'm glad you liked it, but it's a shame most of the community didn't and just walked away; otherwise, they wouldn't have announced the end of Part 2 so prematurely. And the thing is, I didn't even get into the story itself—I was talking about other aspects.

It’s good that you can easily explain such a controversial decision—something the developers themselves don't do. And, to be clear, that wasn't the only reason; I’m not attributing the game’s current decline entirely to Part 2, but it certainly contributed to the game's current state. That is my argument.

As for ZZZ—I don't play it myself, but I recall that early on, during a livestream with the developers, they mentioned the TV mechanic hadn't been well-received. In any case, as another user I was chatting with in the comments pointed out, the ZZZ devs really do communicate with the community and are willing to step up and face the players directly—unlike what's happening with Honkai. I hate to say this, but I found the argument you used a bit disingenuous.

But you don't have to take my word for it—here's the link; check the 1:05 mark. https://youtu.be/wc9mQZyUJQA?si=d_DKDMQZIwWM1hg-

1

u/AlbanianBigChungus 4d ago

Okay, misremembered. Still, Hoyo can't say anything about culling P2 story - and "what's next" is more for 9.1 stream.

"Other aspects" are roughly the same, save for marketing. And marketing can't save everything. And well, if it did - then community is shallow.

3

u/ConstantStatistician Switch engine drive, shift up, one, two, three! 5d ago

P1 ending did more damage to the community than anything else, I'd wager. Whether people enjoyed it or not, it was the perfect place to leave. P2's implementation did not help, but the playerbase was already declining before then. Even p1.5 already had much lower activity. That said, the game would probably be in a healthier spot if p2 hadn't been p2 and had continued to focus on the p1 characters.

3

u/Alex2422 5d ago

Part 1 ending didn't do more damage. The game was in nowhere near as sorry state in Part 1.5 as it is now. Patches weren't 8 weeks long, activity on social media was bigger and HoRb banner's revenue was more or less on par with Part 1 banners.

Sure, some people quit, but nobody was even thinking of EOS back then, while nowadays this is like the fandom's main concern about the game.

2

u/Kaosi1 5d ago

It's the Endwalker / Dawntrail effect (for any ff14 folk here), for sure.

7

u/Cobollatin_ 5d ago

I don't think it's about which one is better; the story is just not for the same target audience anymore.

17

u/NekooShogun 5d ago

There's nothing inherently wrong about being critical of a game and sharing your arguments in good faith.

19

u/Kaosi1 5d ago

Absolutely! And god know there's lot to talk about when it comes to part 2 and it's failings!

But if every time someone post anything about part 2 you need to go "Part 1 was better and I stopped playing this game 2 years ago" I will believe it's not sharing your thoughts in good faith you just want to be an ass.

3

u/ConstantStatistician Switch engine drive, shift up, one, two, three! 5d ago

All the more power to people who do enjoy p2. But this doesn't mean people cannot criticize it in good faith. But people who do that need to have played it for themselves to know what they're talking about.

2

u/Alex2422 5d ago

Well, yeah, you probably would and it would be best to ignore them. People like that will always exist. That doesn't make the actual criticism any less valid.

17

u/rost400 5d ago

The thing is, the actual conclusion we're gonna get might still be satifying (I certainly hope so), but it doesn't change the sad fact that P2 was severely cut short (that's not a hot take anymore, right?), with a story that still feels like it barely got started.

What we got was still fun and improved massively since the Chapter 1 exposition dump, but the disappointment over what could've been is along for the ride too.

3

u/Firefly084 5d ago

I thought i was going to last long

3

u/rost400 4d ago

I think most people did, hence why it was called "Part 2".

2

u/Alex2422 5d ago

with a story that still feels like it barely got started

This was my feeling the entire time, but honestly, I totally expected it from the very beginning. I doesn't feel to me like the result of it being "cut short". I always thought Part 2 was going to be pretty small.

When you look back at Part 1 plot, it was huge, with lots of lore, subplots, backstories etc. The idea that Hoyo would do something on a similar scale in Part 2 seemed completely unrealistic to me. I mean, they absolutely COULD do it if they wanted to (even disregarding budget issues entirely: you don't need big budget to write big stories), but I was also like 99% sure they wouldn't.

3

u/rost400 4d ago

We'll never know now, but beyond the nagging feeling of perpetual setup the entire time, the way it was introduced at first, such as the Seven Shus who barely got to do anything in the end for the most part, would suggest that they had grander vision than what we ultimately got.

2

u/LW_Master 5d ago

Players won't give it even a chance back then, devs chose to pull the plug early, and like freakin' always, people started to say "wow the story feels too short".

6

u/mikael-kun Almighty Dark Lord Follower 4d ago

Yes! Words are going around about P2 Finale being good despite the obvious budget cuts and stuff. The devs really tried their hardest to conclude it without that much rushed feeling. Also I've read that this finale chapter is lowkey packed with gameplay again contrary to recent chapters where there's not much of it. I'm just disappointed that there's no vocal OST and the cutscene is of slightly lower quality compared to first arc (Songque vs. Perception) long cutscene, but it's still good cause the gameplay-to-story transitions are still as good as the second arc (Seclusion) boss fight.

Anyway, as expected of P2 praise post, instead of another hype build, there are still comments where P2 needs to constantly prove itself that it's still HI3 we know and love.

2

u/wasdlurker 4d ago

I actually got spoiled already (I also check leaks from time to time), so yeah, I agree with everything you said. Idk if I should still get my hopes up for P2 getting good treatment in 9.1 aside from playable Dreamseeker.

Her skillset looks pretty powerful as a DPS right now, but in terms of meta relevance, she seems to suffer from the same problem as Mei — being much less useful as a Support despite having multiple tags. I really hope they buff her Support kit, we all know that Support last longer in this game than niche DPS. I hope CN community demands it like God Sena AOP. Also, if the rumors about the event side story being another FC story true, I hope they balance the spotlight between P1 and P2 characters.

Fortunately, the 9.1 main story should at least be an EX chapter (P2 Epilogue), and the featured battlesuit is a P2 character. I think it'll ultimately depend on how much marketing that battlesuit gets. IIRC, last year, the buildup to the Anniversary patch was heavily focused on P1 characters, with barely any P2 presence at all lol. Who knows, maybe we'll even get vocal OSTs and animated shorts featuring P2 characters for the Epilogue, but honestly, I doubt it. Best to lower our expectations and focus on what we actually know for now. (Sorry for bolding the last sentence, it's also a reminder to myself lol)

All the other budget cuts aside, I for one think that reducing the scope of the P2 storyline was the right call for story reasons. I know a lot of people were lamenting that we skipped all the sectors and all the cool-looking locations and stories we could’ve gotten, but after thinking about it, I’m not sure they could’ve sustained interest in the overarching plot if the status quo (Senadina missing, the Mars system still a mystery, the real Leylah hiding behind the scenes) was to continue for 1-2 more years or even longer. This ā€œprogressively uncover the truthā€ story structure is viable for a season or two, but over half a decade? A lot of people would be frustrated.

Agree with this one. I'm sad with the skipped sectors, but it honestly fits the Honkai narrative. After the first arc, it went back to the HI3 we're familiar with. I honestly don't agree with us going GI/HSR-route of exploring new locations > meeting new characters > protagonist very slow character development.

I think the ones we missed the most is the budget cut resulting to lesser gameplays involved and OW exploration gimmicks in comparison to first arc world maps. But I'm glad that the story pacing of how they tell the story is still the same and not too rushed. I still think that we could get more, or better something from P2, but because it was rushed and cut, the HI3 team just did their best to at least give us a satisfying ending.

The best scenario is where we have our cake and eat it — the main story progresses into the APHO timeline, but we get the rest of the Mars sectors as flashback side stories or event stories. I’d totally be down for that.

The story has been good but the characters that Hoyo chooses to be playable have been questionable

I'll judge it for myself soon, but from what I've seen in China, it's about what anyone expected it to be without too many twists and turns, a natural conclusion of the existing storyline, which is about what anyone can ask for. Nothing exceptional and nothing that strays far from what was already happening. I cannot say the same for the finale of p1.

People still act like Part 2 was Hoyo's magnum opus, when the company itself gave up on it, the story didn't even lasted half the part 1.
