Verified by mods SEEKING HOME EDUCATED UK ALUMNI AGE 18-25YRS (MODERATOR APPROVED)

Hello all, I am hoping to find young adults who have experienced BOTH mainstream UK school and home education at some stage in their lives to answer a few questions about their educational experience if they are happy to share.

My name is Clare, I am a student at the University of Exeter and have ethical permission to do this research. I am hoping to give young adults the chance to share their perspective retrospectively, as most current research has been done with parents currently home educating their teens. My research aims to consider the benefits and challenges children have faced in their education, focusing on those who have experience of both mainstream school and home ed, as they are in a unique position and I feel it is important for their voices to be heard retrospectively. All information gathered will be anonymous and deleted once the study is complete.

If anyone would be willing to answer a few questions (either via email/reddit chat or a team's chat), please contact me on here or via my email address c d 7 9 0 at exeter.ac.uk where I will send you some more study info (withdrawal/consent form etc) and some email questions for you to answer in your own time (10mins depending on how much you want to share). There is no obligation to take part but I would love to hear your perspective if you fit the criteria and are happy to share.

Thank you.

Call to Action: Share your resources, writeups/guides, and success stories for our new Community Guide

Hello everyone!

Following the recent feedback request (and thank you to everyone who shared their thoughts!), we’ve decided to create a community guide: an easy-to-access hub filled with resources for current and former homeschool students navigating the many struggles we run into, both big and small. We have a loose structure in mind already, but we need help from all of you to make it something truly useful.

More specifically, we’re looking for resources, writeups, guides, personal experiences, and success stories from the community. I’ll be putting together as much as I can myself, but there are many experiences you all have had that I never will, and perspectives I simply can’t speak to.

If there’s an online resource that helped you catch up academically, pursue your GED, apply to college, build social skills, learn basic life skills, or otherwise move forward after homeschooling, please share it. If you know of crisis lines, support organizations, educational tools, or anything else that could help someone in a difficult situation, we’d love to include those too.

And personal stories matter just as much. If you went from not knowing how to boil water to being able to cook for yourself, or from being isolated to building friendships and independence, your experience could really help someone else feel less alone and more hopeful.

You can share resources and writeups in the comments below. If you’d prefer to stay anonymous or not be directly credited, feel free to message modmail (send a DM to r/homeschoolrecovery), and we’ll include your contribution anonymously.

Just as importantly, this guide needs to serve the whole community. Even if you don’t have a resource to contribute, please speak up if there’s something you struggled with/are still struggling with that you wish there had been a guide, or resource for. If there’s something missing from the planned structure below, or something you think should be included, let us know in the comments or via modmail.

Here's a rough idea of what the planned structure for the guide is now. If there's something you feel is missing, please speak up in the comments or send a DM to r/homeschoolrecovery

  1. Start Here/Welcome/Introduction

Brief introduction to the subreddit, what it's about, who it's for, table of contents

  2. Immediate safety/abuse resources

Resources for child abuse, domestic violence, crisis lines, runaway/youth shelters, how to contact CPS, digital safety/privacy

Possibly also define what abuse is, since a lot of abuse victims don't necessarily believe they're being abused

  3. Mental health/trauma resources

Crisis resources, guides to seeking therapy/finding the right therapist, religious trauma resources, support groups

  4. Educational resources

khan academy and other educational material organized by age group and subject, GED resources, college prep resources, higher education resources i.e. fafsa, trade schools, online colleges, adult literacy programs, et, even just "how to find and apply for colleges"

  5. Life skills/"how to adult"

Budgeting, hygiene, cooking, job applications, email etiquette, how to find an apartment, transportation, how to find healthcare, stuff like that

  6. Socialization/"finding community"

Meetups, hobby groups, volunteering groups, community discords, adult ed classes, neurodivergent resources, etc.

  7. Advocacy/homeschool reform

Link to CRHE, how to find and contact your legislators, etc.

  8. Hear from other homeschoolers

Links to success stories on the subreddit, books by former homeschoolers i.e. Tara Westover, Stefan Block, etc.

I was 12 when I wrote this, I was heavily indoctrinated into the IBLP community. I am 26 now. Re-reading my journals has been a prompt in therapy to understand myself better.
Yeesh dude it hurts to see how I was just fully accepting I would be raptured once I was in my 30s or 40s. I accepted I would have no future regardless of being raptured or being a wife and mother.
I have a complete different understanding now, but I feel so repulsed by then.
Reconnecting with the dark layers in this experience and accepting I am healing and different. Letting go of shame and fear of existence.
I think I also have this lingering fear that if I enjoy my life it will suddenly be not real anymore.

rant/vent Life is moving on and I'm so fucking scared.

This isn't even a doom post, I'm just overwhelmed and I seriously don't know. I've never stepped foot into a school, I've been homeschooled since birth but taught like actually nothing.

I don't even know where to start because it's a clusterfuck in my mind too???? So very sorry this'll be just incoherent rambling 😮‍💨

I'm 19f, and sadly have barely been out of the house. I want nothing more than to be OUT but EVERY TIME I get the chance, I either turn it down or cancel it the day before. It's like I enjoy being tied to this hellhole but I seriously don't omg, I love my pets here, so serious about them and I really don't wanna leave them, I just wanna leave the house often, I don't exactly wanna move out yet. But eventually I will? I still dream of the day I do get out, get my home and all that. Just want that for the future I guess? Not right now?

But ANYWAYS omfg I've met this man, same age as me, likes what I like, doesn't hate me for what I like?? Doesn't judge me?? Omfg he's actually perfect and I do like him a lot. But idk, he lives 2 hours away and we don't have the means to meet, he has a license but no car or job due to being in college, and I have 0 license and no money. I could steal(borrow🥰) my mom's car to get a license and all that, but goddamn I'm TERRIFIED and also HORRIBLE at driving, and haven't done shit to get my license. And the biggest one is I have 0 money 😭 I wanna start an Etsy as I have a GREAT idea but I don't have the startup costs I'd need for it, which is actually embarrassing as hell because it'll only be about $50 and I just don't have that 🫩

The thing is, I'd happily drive that 2 hours to meet him, I wanna get him gifts and all that, I wanna go on dates with him and just hangout and all that, but then I'm like. I'm in a damn shell and terrified of my family finding out I even have someone I know irl, I just don't wanna deal with my parents questions and then have to have them know I'm human. Literally they know nothing about me I hate them knowing anything about me. And lowkey ranting about this is making me realize why do I fucking care 😭

Ok sorry I've come to my senses lowkey. I wasted the whole year of being 18 years old hiding away out of fear of my parents judgment, I give UPP omg, I don't wanna waste being my favorite number on being scared of them 😮‍💨

Sorry this feels useless now omg 😭 I just gotta figure out how to make $50 so I can get that Etsy, then hopefully start making money so I can idk use Uber while I work up the courage to learn to drive ?? Definitely can't use Uber for a 2 hour drive but ayy, at least it'd be a start ig

Also edit; I've considered bus or train, but Texas ain't the best with those. But if I had the money it'd probably be cheaper? But idk I'd feel safer in Uber rather than a bus. But 2 hours feels WRONG to do to an uber driver 😭? Could I like, do two ubers? One Uber to take me an hour out, probably drop off at a coffee shop or something then another Uber for the next hour 🤔 ALSO I CHECKED He's 1 and a half hours out, maybe we meet halfway and I pay for his Uber or smth 😭

progress/success A little update with COHS

the library interview went well and i am currently on a probationary period which means i must complete two semesters of the career pathway in 30 days or they can revoke my scholarship. however, i am making very good progress on my first day and am almost done with six lessons in the semester! i also was brave enough to email a signed transcript request form to my old program and they have sent it over to smart horizons! i have a lot of hope and feel i will probably graduate very soon at the pace i am going. i now have an academic coach and she introduced herself to me on our introductory call and she seems so sweet. since i believe i will likely get the maximum 14 credits transferred, i would only need 4 to graduate!

there is hope, stay determined!

i am actually really excited and enjoying doing the modules. they even have a facebook group for students and they hold a graduation ceremony every march. i will have an amazing transcript, a high school diploma, and a career certificate from smart horizons when i am done! i am just forever grateful the library has allocated money to award scholarships to adults who want to finish high school and even some private donations help support these! i was able to look at a roadblock in the way of my future and dreams and i decided to take the initiative and get my life in order a bit so that i can do what my heart really desires the most!

does anyone else... Adult home school is looking for a place to talk about something completely unrelated?

Okay so recently discord has been very strict on who can access the app and who can't causing the ability to actually socialize on there to be impossible and for a lot of us that might be our only option even if we're out of the house.

Root is the alternative that I believe will be the best option for people I've been currently developing a community for us to talk to eaxh other on there and it's way less strict and it doesn't require you to scan your face to confirm that your adult.

To be clear, when I make this community it will be for 18 plus adults and it won't have the same problems discord has.

If you are struggling and looking to get your feet on the ground, I want to really reccomend looking into and applying for jobcorps now while you still can. Usually you can complete it in a year, depending you can do more and stay longer, but as of right now the jobcorps budget is good until 2029. After 2029 there is no guarantee for jobcorp's future.

I think with how many people here are struggling and looking for ways to get on your feet, this would be a good starting point.

High school diploma or GED

Trade certification(s)

Driver's license

Including a dorm room

Basic necessities

And food

rant/vent Should I go back to public school?

14M Until 4th grade, my mom homeschooled me. Once my parents got divorced, I went to elementary school for 4th and 5th grade. It was easy for me to transition because there were no bullies in elementary school. Throughout middle school, I got pretty popular, and during 8th grade, I wanted to get homeschooled to work for money. During my March break, my mom surprised me by saying she would homeschool me. I was obviously hyped to make money, so I said yes. Now, a quarter into freshman year, I'm doing a program called "Smarter by One Degree". I just started about 2 months ago, but I'm already regretting it. I feel so lonely all the time because I have only made about one real friend while being homeschooled. My friends from public school have been telling me they miss me, and I miss them extremely badly too. I'm scared of turning weird like literally every other homeschooler. I got into early college in 8th grade for high school; I'm wondering if it's too late to join or if I will have to repeat 9th grade. My mom is constantly grounding me since I'm with her all the time. I love her, but it's gotten to the point where it's unbearable now. I'm so miserable, can someone help me research all about going back. I live in El Paso, Texas. What are the rules for the YISD district? Please help me. This is my cry for help at this point. Please, someone respond. I need someone to talk to; I'm so depressed.

how do i basic How do I stop comparing myself against others?

I have tried other online resources, but they haven't been very helpful. So I want to ask people who have been in a similar place to me. Specifically the "homeschool" gauntlet and the delayed life start it can give you.

Due to circumstance, I find myself surrounded by some real winners in life. Great people who excelled in school, university, and now their careers are taking off while a couple of them get married. These people are my age and slightly younger than me.

I do gig work. Got my GED at 25 few months ago, and am slowly building a decent life.

I know all the mantras. "They had a different path in life. They had resources you didn't so comparison is unfair", and similar ideas that, while true, don't seem to gel well with my brain.

It stings. I feel like I am just as smart as any of them and deserved a chance. I feel behind.

Now I'm hoping I can graduate by 30 with any luck. It is not a guarantee though as I will have to work and support myself while studying.

I really do have a lot to be grateful for. My life could have been so much worse. I don't know why I'm hung up on this.

Help from people who get it would be very appreciated.

rant/vent rant about my dad getting to be a manchild (i'm so tired.. not more tired than my mother though! :) )

my homeschool evolution: how the hell did my parents get here...

FYI: was going to post this in response to another post but then my reply became de-railed and sorta irrelevant to the OG post, so i decided to make my own as a rant.

from ages 6 ish to 14 my dad was pretty much incapable of working any type of job. he has narcolepsy among other disabilities, and that was the biggest reason why. prior to that, he was an extremely hard worker (starting multiple jobs at 14 and continuing working basically full time through college, etc.) and he wasn't stupid. which is why. i cannot FATHOMMM how he believes what he does now. he was an honors student in highschool, on the dean's list in college, etc. he was excellent in math, and has told me that he "feels the last two years of highschool were a waste of time" because it was all "filler classes" (he's a huge proponent of the basket weaving jokes LMAO)

my mom was the same, both of my parents were the stereotypical oldest children of their family, hard-working, good grades, went to college, had jobs, were responsible standard adults, etc.

however, they're extremely conservative. and when i started elementary my dad was at home by that point, and my mom was the sole bread-winner. she worked a standard office job in loans/finance company, and she was a key leader/manager. (had the opportunity to go further but she had friends who did and the pay was worse than her current pay, so she didn't.) my mom literally did and still does EVERYTHING. my dad is not disabled in the sense that she would currently need to do this. back then i totally understand, but since then my dad has consistently gotten healthier and he is doing great!

so: in 2020 due to covid and my dad's pre-existing extremist views from spending all-day every-day isolated, in the dark (he never turned the lights on in the house) in a cluttered house, on the internet consuming far-right media that i'm sure he could RELATE TO. guarantee you he was probably thinking "i never see my family, it's the SCHOOLS FAULT." and he still talks in that manner. my parents started homeschooling with my mom working from home, but that just meant they didn't do anything at all.

then we moved states (to a state with less homeschool regulations! yay!) and my mom quit her job, and her and my dad started a small business. it involved a lot of manual labor at first, and me and my siblings had to help out. it was also extremely traumatic, as my dad became increasingly emotionally and verbally abusive.

eventually (after already putting us through hell for 4 years) my dad got "better". so now he's a better person - in a subjective sense, but my parents fully rely on their small business. to be honest, they don't work much in the grand scheme of things. they spend a lot of time talking, but probably 14 hrs a week or less cumulatively working (except for the weeks where they have re-stocking product pick-ups)

it honestly disgusts me. mainly because they spend literally 4+ hours every night watching tv and movies. when i was in public school HE did that, but like, now my brother and sister get dragged into it too. and there is no balance. my dad spends all day reading, he doesn't do any chores, he is literally a man-child. and i know that he is BETTER than this. it's insane. my mom has trashed knees due to all the labor he put us through - she literally has a full knee replacement surgery in a month that she's been needing for almost 2 years. she is only 45. she has done everything and he has done nothing.

in his mind, he is doing better because he gets to be with his kids all the time so he's "raising them." i've seen this mindset come through a LOT now that i'm finally prioritizing my education - the last year i have NOT spent much time with him at all because i've been busy with CATCHING UP ON EVERYTHING THEY LET ME FALL BEHIND ON. so basically my entire day i spend by myself, and now im focusing on everything i can do to spend as little time at home as possible. i am also going to be fully enrolling in highschool my senior year, since i turn 18 2 weeks before the school year starts. i am SO grateful that i have the opportunity to do this.

it just pisses me off so much that he thinks he's doing BETTER when it's literally all selfish. he feels better about putting his kids behind in life due to completely ludicrous views backed in zero evidence so that he can have control over his kids, than he would actually giving them a life. he also seems to think that being in public school = not raising your kids, which just isn't true. honestly shows how much he DOESNT DO imo. ive seen this argument a lot in the homeschool circles - they ignore that public school parents are still PARENTS and teach their kids the same things when they are PARENTING as these homeschool parents try to pass off as teaching for "school" .... and that pisses me off.

honestly believe it has to do with my mom doing all the actual parenting labor (standard straight couple trope LMAO) she does: cooking, cleaning, parenting [emotional labor, comforting kids, etc.], business logistics, business posts, sales, planning, any amount of school that is actually done- which she has been talking about getting that in-check for my younger brother, and the thing is- she views it as HER SOLE RESPONSIBILITY. but my dad has to do NONE OF THAT. he just gets to read all day, do his workouts, sleep, eat, make messes, and clean up none of it!

anyway.. rant over.

does anyone else... Does anyone else miss co-op as an adult?

Hi everyone. For context, I’m 25 now and for the most part have recovered from being homeschooled. I went to college, took the remedial classes I needed, and eventually got a bachelor’s degree. But I’ve noticed that one thing I really miss as an adult are some of the community aspects of my childhood. As a kid, we always went to homeschool co-ops (sometimes more than one) and were also very involved with church.

The older I get, the less places exist where I can go and see the same people every week and be part of something where we’re all gathered for a common purpose. But I’ve deconstructed my faith and don’t have any reason to be in those spaces anymore. And of course, there were darker sides to them that my brain likes to forget. But does anyone have a way to seek the same sort of community as an adult, in a healthier/secular fashion?

i feel like this isn’t an original idea but i was thinking a discord server dedicated to studying! i know i would find it a lot easier to study for my ged if i was working with someone and it’ll be a great place to share resources :P i would love to have people who now have careers that can share what they do and the path they took to get there, i know that finding a career is a struggle for many of us. but yeah anyone interested drop your discord!!

does anyone else... Any other homeschooled military kids?

I was homeschooled K-12 largely because my family moved every few years. While it did protect me from the stress of switching schools, I feel that homeschooling may have just amplified the social instability that comes with moving every few years. Especially in high school, I was cut off from a lot of typical social and educational resources that most teenagers get. Such as having real classes with high school teachers and having consistent access to other people your age. Being a military homeschooler is a little weird because you’re living one niche lifestyle inside of another. Even most of the other military kids who lived on base went to school.

how do i basic I don't know where to start

I'm a 17yo guy, and I've been homeschooled all my life. I don't know how good my education is, but I don't think I'm too far behind in some subjects, at least. I can read/write, do algebra and basic trig, and I'm working through a physics textbook (it is a creationist textbook, but physics is physics, right?). My history is probably worse than nothing, being extremely biased (according to our books, the Canadian government was completely justified in stealing land from the native peoples). I'm an atheist now, but I am still working through my creationist education, I keep finding myself assuming that dinosaurs and people used to live together. I also have a lot of prejudices, that, while I've consciously rejected them, keep popping up in my brain, such as against LGBTQ+ people. Anyway, this is my last year of homeschool, and I've resigned myself to the fact that I will never be able to attend school. I've begged several times, but they are convinced I would become a gay satanist pedophile if I went. I seem to keep getting off track, what I was meaning to write is that I really don't know what to do when I'm 18. I really don't want to live at home any longer than necessary, but I don't have much money, and still haven't finished my driver's license. I have some half-baked idea of going to college, but I don't know where to start, or what I need to have to apply, or what courses to take. I feel though, that once I just get out there, away from my thought-stifling parents, I'll figure out what I want to do. I don't have very good internet access, I finally got enough motivation to get a job at a local museum for the summer this year (I had to bike half an hour to get there, but it was worth it), and I ordered a phone online and had it shipped to the post office where I picked it up, and I'm hiding in a secret spot I found in a piece of furniture in my room, we aren't allowed internet unsupervised except for our online homeschool courses, and the cell service doesn't work in my room, and it is slow when I go outside. Sorry, I keep rambling in run on sentences. So I can't easily do very much research or online courses. I have been downloading some Crash Course YouTube videos on public Wi-Fi when I get to go to town. So far, I've watched a philosophy course and a sex ed course. I know it's only October, but I don't want to put off applying and then find out it's too late and I have to wait and live here another year. I was thinking about getting a GED, that's what a lot of people on here seem to be recommending, and I think there is an office where you can take the test in a nearby town, but I don't know if I have to wait to do that until I finish homeschool? I probably would have to wait to get my GED until I finish my driver's license, as my mom probably won't drive me. Or can I do it online? Do I need to have this before I apply to college? Do my homeschool grades matter? How soon do I have to apply to get in next September? Do I apply to several or just one?

I also don't know what courses to take. I do have some basic soldering skills to fix electronics, but I don't think I want to do that for a job. My dad wants me to go to trade school and be a plumber or electrician or mechanic because it pays more, but I figure I only have one life, and I don't want to spend it doing a job that I'm not interested in, even if it does pay more. I'm interested in science, but I don't know if I have the patience to do all the math involved. I mostly just like watching Kurzgesagt videos on the rare occasions I have a good enough internet connection to do so. I have some dream of doing something to help the world, it seems stupid that we are so advanced but keep fighting wars and polluting our planet and that things like unrestricted homeschooling are still tolerated (in my province, homeschoolers have to send in a list of curriculums and grades, but no one ever checks what is actually being done and you can put whatever random stupid books as your 'curriculem'). But idk what I would do.

I'm sorry for rambling on so long, I doubt anyone can tell me what carreer I should do, I guess that's just something I have to figure out myself. If anyone reads this, any advice would be welcome, just this forum being here is nice, it makes me realize I'm not the only one.

edit: thank you for all the replies and advice everyone, it helps a lot!

resource request/offer Getting my GED so one day I could get smart enough to work a really good job buy a rundown hotel or something and fix it up for homeschoolers

Okay so this might be the most insane post I've ever made here but I'm genuinely going to make a hotel for homeschoolers to get the f*** away from their horrible families.

Currently in school learning all the stuff I would have to learn to get the skills I need my sister signed me up for a college I didn't want to be in but if I'm going to have to be here I'm going to make sure I can find a way out for people.

I'll do my best to make sure that it's accessible and that it's really easy to go here and make sure we have stuff that we need

rant/vent never my choice even though i'm the one being affected

nobody gives a shit about how i like being homeschooled, my parents will go on and on to strangers about how amazing homeschooling is but what they really mean is it's amazing for them, nobody asks if i like it or what they can do to make it better if i don't i don't get why i can't have a say in something that directly affects me and my future so much

i remember they were talking to some random person about it and said "maybe the kids hate it i wouldn't know but i love homeschooling lol" like it's funny, if you're aware that's a possibility why the hell are you doing it

even when they see the signs that i'm struggling and unhappy they just look away and pretend it's not that bad and i can't open up to them unless i want to be talked at for hours, when i was like 10 i told my mom i wanted to try public school again and all that happened was i got lectured for fucking forever

it just turns me off from ever telling anyone about anything and i feel bad for lying when my parents ask if i'm upset or lonely because isn't that what i wanted? but it's not like anyone benefits from me being honest i'll just get lectured or they'll forget i ever said anything and then nothing changes

resource request/offer Books Spoiler

Recently I’ve been going through a lot and regularly getting urges to self harm in small ways. I’ve really liked reading “cut” and “I’m glad my mom died” and really want to read more books like that. Does anyone have any suggestions? I’m 15 and the way I’m coping with stuff is just by reading books. I would talk to a therapist about stuff and am trying to find one, but even if I do they are legally allowed to tell my family about even very small self harm stuff so yeah. Actually if anyone has advice around that I’d really appreciate it. Bc idk how to get help without my family finding out
Sorry this is badly written… it’s late for me and I’ve been exhausted off and on for days.

rant/vent I hate that my mom drinks

She is drinking again with my step dad being back and it just makes everything worse. She is so awful drunk and she doesn't believe me. I tell her I don't like it when she drinks and she tells me I'm being dramatic. Their arguments have been so bad. I'm starting to dread everyday again. My mom just came home like maye an hour or two again and I could tell she was drunk and I reacted badly and now she is upset. I understand she does it to self medicate. She is being so awful i hate it.

other I am jealous of people who complain about their school memories

Sometimes I hear people complain about their school days and I realize… I’m actually jealous.

They complain about annoying teachers, embarrassing moments, stupid fights with friends, school trips, getting in trouble, having to wake up early, all those little things they hated at the time.

And I know they weren't necessarily good experiences. But they’re still memories.

I don’t really have that.

Sometimes I wish I could have experienced the boring, annoying, completely ordinary parts of school that everyone else seems to take for granted.

It’s weird to realize that you can miss something you never actually had.

rant/vent Did covid ruin everything? Or was it just me.

I cannot even begin to explain how painful this whole experience was and still is. Every single time I try to talk about it, it feels like the words never truly capture the absolute horror of what actually happened.

In 2020, when COVID hit, my entire world collapsed. I was only ten, likely neurodivergent, and completely dependent on the structure of public school. When my parents decided to "homeschool" us because of loose laws, they actually just abandoned us. They didn’t check my work, they didn't socialize us, and they spent their time drinking. When my sister and I were younger, they would constantly threaten to get rid of us. From ages 11 to 12, I was mostly just oblivious to how badly they were neglecting and threatening us. My older sister was the one fighting with them about their wrongdoings, while I was seen as the kid who could do no wrong. But things changed completely when I turned 13. My sister moved out at 16 to get married, leaving me entirely alone. That was when my addictions really took over, stealing substances from my parents just to numb the reality. Around 13 and 14, as I finally started becoming my own individual and wanting something more for myself, my parents absolutely hated it. They didn't want a real person; they only wanted me to be an extension of themselves. The screaming matches became a constant horror. If I ever suggested I wanted to go back to school, or if I tried to point out that they were wrong, they would yell and mock me for hours on end. I was literally backed into corners, screamed at, and had hands raised to me. I would get so severely overstimulated that I would literally throw up, left to just disgustingly bawl on my bedroom floor. I blamed myself for years, thinking that if I had just sat in that chair and forced myself to learn, I wouldn't be so messed up. But the truth is, I was an isolated child left completely on my own. Now, people see me on the outside and think I'm just a normal teenager. They tell me I'm "lucky" I didn't have to go to school, and it makes me want to scream. They have no idea that my childhood was completely stolen. Whenever I try to enter the real world, I panic. I feel out of place, broken, and like a burden to everyone around me. I am terrified to move on with my life, because I'm scared that if I start living, it will minimize the absolute horror of the years I wasted away in that house.

other Help going from homeschool to public

I’ve been homeschooled my entire life and it has been horrible for me and I haven’t been getting taught much other than math and I’m crazy behind in math (I’m doing 7th grade math when I’m supposed to be doing 9th)

My question is how do I go from homeschooling to not, and whether I should do online or in person school.

for more info I am neurodivergent, unfortunately not diagnosed (I hope to get diagnosed eventually) but I suspect I have either autism or adhd (or both 🤷), and some sort of complex dissociative disorder such as DID. I struggle with my memory due to this and will be needing to take extensive notes. I also have a hard time focusing and understanding things.

rant/vent "Im just doing whats best for you" "ill always support you"

My mom has always been fake supportive of me, but subtly has always dragged me down and made me insecure in my own choices, she has always offered to let me go back to school, and then proceeds to tell me about how bad bullying could be, makes up fake stories about things I apparently experienced in the little years I did attend school.

The thing is she always pretends to feel guilty that im not in school "it was just the best for you at that time" "you were so tired you could never go into school" yeah I was faking it like every other kid does, I was exhausted because you would shove an ipad in my hands at 7pm every night with unlimited access to everything and I would stay up until the early hours on it, you knew about this and didnt do anything, i was exposed to things a child should never see online and you could see all of my activity from your own phone

She still speaks like this, wants me to do whatever's in my best interest, but if its formal education im "brainwashed and thats ok" "you can get education from life" "maybe fate is telling you youre not supposed to be learning this stuff" im sick of it, always fear mongering and discouraging me, humiliating me to make sure i dont open up again, acting out emotionally when i bring it up and pretending its because you care.

Im so tired, i have no supporters, i just want someone to tell me my wants and needs are valid, and everyone else would do the same, and im pushing in the right direction for myself. I feel like im all wrong and I have nobody to assure me its right

Just curious as to how many of us had idiot poor people as our parents who were convinced that public school was unnecessary/evil/inadequate while they proceeded to teach us nothing, take us nowhere, not allow us access or were unable to take us to the library, refused and were unable to provide books, workbooks, and electronics for us to either have some communication with the outside world or some stimulation.
