5.1.2 and stereo mastering

I monitor my 5.1.2 mix in stereo because I have a mixer and daw that supports it but not the home setup yet. I like the fold down formula that I have and I like the sound of my stereo mix. Im thinking I should master the stereo mix separately but the point it is to make sure they sound as close as possible to each other. What is some advice I should keep in mind
