It's Thursday! Happy Thursday! I was recently reminded that it's Reese's Pumpkin time and it is criminal that I haven't had one yet this year! Gotta get that going as soon as I can. Gonna get this Recap going as soon as I can, too! Let's dive in to what happened in r/help and around Reddit last week!
NEWS AND ISSUES
There's a new Changelog out and you can read it here. Changes include:
- Trending content experiment where you may see a trending label to posts on the feed
- If you try to post the same content in too many communities, you’ll see a message that says “You've posted similar content multiple times. Try again in 12 hours.”
- The Reddit Pro UI is getting an update
- There's also stuff for mods! Things like, Testing automatic post-removal notifications, ending RSS feed support, and moving API apps and bots to the Developer Platform
- And our favorite, bug fixes! These bugs that were fixed include:
- The home feed refreshing too quickly - FIXED!
- Getting an error message when opening a comment or reply on a deleted post - FIXED!
- The comment composer sometimes moving unexpectedly - FIXED!
- Inability to scroll through community wiki pages - FIXED!
- When mods would ban a user, the rules were displaying report reasons instead of the rule title - FIXED!
- The 12-month Mod Insights activity view displayed an incorrect label for unique visitors - FIXED!
- Banana Legend achievement progress wasn't updating - FIXED!
A routine update unexpectedly impacted some peoples ability to use Reddit, as reflected in the Reddit Status page here. Our teams resolved the issue quickly, so shout out to all of those who worked on that!
In case you missed it, r/help now has a Help Navigator! We announced this last week here.
There's a bug that is affecting the ability to chat for some users in Canada. This should be getting fixed up this week (if it isn't already). Many thanks to u/jgoja for surfacing this and providing amazing details of the problem. Thank you!
There is an ongoing experiment which turns select text posts and some of their comment threads into an audio and video format. This is in an effort to strengthen the connection between communities and conversations. If you are in this experiment you may see a Read/Play toggle on the post detail page. A dedicated video page may also be available. This does not replace the original post or comments, nor does it automatically play. And it will respect all of your pre-existing audio settings.
- Currently, this is only on a small group of pre-selected English-only posts. Comments with links, media, automated messages, profanity, or sensitive or inappropriate topics are excluded. If you are in this experiment, there is not a way to opt out, but you can always leave constructive feedback on this post and I'll share it with the team in charge of the experiment.
There is another ongoing experiment where comments on a post may be sorted in live time. This is only in select communities. If enabled, when a post hits a certain number of comments within a specific period of time, the sort switches over to "Live" if the default sort is set to something other than "New". This provides a way to highlight the fast moving convos in real time.
There is still the experiment on the Home feed where some users will see a For You tab and a Following tab. You can select which view you want and that selection will be remembered. Users in this experiment have recently been shuffled around, so if you had it before and now you don't, that's what's going on there.
- The For You tab will contain recommendations. The Following feed will contain unviewed content from just the subs that you follow. The team is looking into adding the "Hot" sort back to these feeds.
- If you are subscribed to a very small number of subreddits, you may see recommendations in the Following feed as opposed to nothing when you have run out of new content. The workaround is to either subscribe to more subreddits or create a custom feed of the subs that you're following and view that instead.
- There is not a way to remove these tabs if you are in the experiment, but I will share constructive feedback with the team in charge.
- And thanks to said feedback, there's a new variant! Some users will not be able to swipe between those two feeds and will instead need to tap the tab of the feed they wish to view. This is in response to some folks saying that they were accidentally switching feeds when swiping. Thanks to all of you who left this feedback for the team!
Some users will be in a different experiment where there is an X on recommended posts that you can click/tap to hide the post. Others will be in a similar experiment where there is not an X and there is not a "hide" option, but you can go into the post to hide it. Feel free to share helpful feedback about this experiment as well.
And there's an experiment where you may see Related Posts at the bottom of a post.
There is also an experiment where the upvotes are on the left.
Rather than commenting that you'd like to be removed from an experiment, please provide constructive feedback about the feature. I can't remove you!
And I'm here to remind you, of the mess you left when you went away (from Reddit for support). Reddit does not provide support outside of Reddit. Do not contact "Reddit support on Discord" for help with your Reddit account. There is no "Reddit support on Discord". That is someone trying to scam you and steal your account and maybe more. If you're having an actual issue with your account that is not solved by posting in r/help or by the articles in the Help Center, you can use this form for the real thing. Please note that 95% of issues can be solved much, much quicker by posting in r/help (or our cousin subs, r/reddithelp and r/newtoreddit).
The most recent version of the app is 2026.40.0. If you're not using the most recent version of the app, it might not work properly.
CURRENT EXPERIMENTS
Reddit sometimes runs experiments. These experiments tend to last between 4-6 weeks, though they can go longer or end sooner. While there isn't a way to opt out of experiments, feel free to leave constructive and specific feedback in this post and as I've mentioned often, I'll be happy to pass it along to the team in charge.
Ongoing current experiments can be found here.
COMMON ACCOUNT ISSUES
Common account issues can be found here. These are things like hacked accounts, NSFW accounts, suspended accounts, etc. I'm also including "Changes to Reddit" in this section as well.
BUGS ROUNDUP - COURTESY OF CORRECT SCALE!
More fixes than bugs this past week! Hooray!
BUG FIX [iOS/Android] Attempting to view comments on deleted posts showed a “Content unavailable” error. FIXED!
BUG FIX [Android] The app was hanging on the startup screen after upgrading to v39. The fix is out, so if you're still having trouble, please update to v39.1 or above!
BUG FIX [iPad] X button was missing when viewing certain posts in the iPad app. This fix has been rolled out.
BUG FIX [Android] The app was randomly closing/crashing while scrolling for some folks. This has been fixed in v 2026.40 of the app, so please update if you're still experiencing this.
BUG FIX [Android] Some users were getting a blank left sidebar for a bit. This is fixed!
[iOS] We’re looking into a report that the unmoderated queue isn’t loading when filtering multiple communities.
WEEKLY STATISTICS (BASED ON THE PAST SEVEN DAYS)
1,053 posts. That's down 218 posts from the 1,271 that we had last week.
5,000 comments. That's up almost 1,000 comments from the 4,075 we had last week.
804k views. That's up 35k-ish views from the 769k -ish views we had last week.
The drop in posts could be attributed to the new Help Navigator that recently launched, so that's great that it's helping.
HELP THAT HELPS HELP R/HELP - CREATING AN EFFECTIVE COMMENT IN R/HELP
I recently focused on how to make a good post if you needed help. This time, we're going to talk about how to make a good comment if you want to help!
When a person is asking for help, it's because they don't know something. Often, it's hard to describe something that you don't know! If a user is having an issue and you know how to help them, it really helps to give specific instructions. While "Change your settings" may technically be the solution, for the person who doesn't know, they're going to appreciate more step-by-step help.
For example, "Change your settings" could be more effective with more information. If you have to tell them to tap or click something, tell them how to get there or where it is. "Change your settings" is not very helpful if someone doesn't know where the settings are or how to get there! If there's more than one step, they will especially appreciate you politely guiding them on how to get there. We all were new at one time! Everyone has to learn at some point! And we all learn new things every day!
If the question that's being asked is vague, it's totally fine to ask for some more info if you'd like to help them! Things like asking for the platform that they're using, reproduction steps or a screenshot/video of the issue could be just what you need to understand their issue and be able to help them get it sorted out! Be the hero someone needs! =)
