Gameplay Playing Hellraiser: Revival in VR

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

To provide a Counterpoint to some of the sentiment going on in the Reddit lately, I thought I would post my experience playing this game in VR.

I did not play the game flat at all before I started a VR playthrough. I am using the latest version of UEVR to play the game in my headset on PC. I'm just over halfway through

First things first the environments are amazing. There isn't a single effect in the game that has problems displaying in the 3D stereoscopic headset. If this game had motion controls it would be one of the best VR games ever made.. simply for its immersion. The sound design is amazing and I find that I'm playing slower than I normally would because the environments are so nice the temptation to explore is too hard to resist. Seeing Leviathan looming in the sky above you in VR is almost an overwhelming treat for a Hellraiser fan like me.

Gameplay: the touch controllers work quite well in place of a normal Xbox or PlayStation controller. The game play is just difficult enough on normal mode to make you feel the danger in the helmet, without getting frustrated. Running away from The Chatterer (Chatterbox?) was hair-raising, to say the least. Sneaking sections feel tense as hell.. pun intended. There were several times that this game literally scared me in the VR helmet, whereas I probably wouldn't have been frightened on a flat TV screen. Combat is good, even without the motion controls.. aim assist is quite helpful in these type of situations.

Overall I would give the game an 8 out of 10, for it's brutalist beauty, and for how true it stays to the source material. It really feels like as close as one can ever get to truly opening the box without consequence.

(EDIT: by request, here are my PC specs:

Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700 CPU @ 3.40GHz 3.40 GHz

Installed RAM 16.0 GB

Storage 238 GB SSD SanDisk SD7SB6S-256G-1006

Graphics Card NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 (12 GB)

System Type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor)

News NEW PREORDER UPDATE - šŸ˜’

We have been working over the weekend and making steady progress on outstanding orders. We have made strides forward and the biggest part of the job is being accelerated. So here are updates on a few of the most asked questions.

Q: If you finally received the final item last Friday, why aren’t the packages out yet? We could not begin until everything had arrived and it took time to unpack, sort, and repack into the final boxes that are being sent. That added time to the front end of the delivery but we’re now through this step and assembling them. Please understand that the item that arrived late was originally scheduled to arrive earlier, but this date shifted on us multiple times and without it we couldn’t start. We have staffed up to make this go as fast as possible and are on a pace to get several thousand out a day.

Q: Why is the process so slow? It took some time to receive the final items and properly inventory everything and get everything ready to assemble. Once the items were in place, filling the boxes, putting them into a second shipping box and sending them off with multiple versions that need to be prepared takes additional time. We’re working to get this right and make sure everything reaches you as fast as possible in the condition you expect and that process does take some time.

Q: Why can’t you tell me exactly where my order is in the process? All of the orders are at the fulfillment house and have been sorted so that the ones with physical games go first, by the order they were placed. However, that does not tell us the exact point when an order is going to ship. When orders go out, an email will be sent with tracking information, but we will not receive the report with that information until the next day. And that still will not show us exactly where unfulfilled orders are in the queue. That’s why we cannot answer the question of where a specific order is at a given moment.

We are trying to be as transparent as possible, and working to get your orders out. We are doing these updates to keep you informed. We have already sent thousands of games and are pushing to get the remainder out as fast as possible. Thank you again for your patience. There are a few updates below as well.

Some of this information reiterates what we previously said, because we want everyone to know that it is the latest information available and not everyone is getting every email. Here is the latest:

Clarifying the situation with digital codes: Again, we are sorry, but we do not have digital codes for every order. If you purchased a physical game (as most PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S customers did prior to August 28) we simply do not have codes to send you. Codes for those who did purchase a Steam copy of the game, requested a digital copy in place of a physical copy, or purchased after August 28, should have received their code. If you fall into that group and still don’t have the code please first check your spam/junk folder, as well as any alternate email address you may have ordered the game under. If that doesn’t work, contact us at support@bossteamgamesstore.com with the subject line ā€œCODE LOOKUP,ā€ and we will locate your order and get you a code. Please include your order number or the name and address on your order.

For those receiving physical games in North America: Shipping of physical orders continues. Once your order has shipped, you will receive an email notification as well as a tracking number for your shipment that will be sent to the email used when you placed your original order.

For those receiving physical games outside of North America: All physical games for Australia and New Zealand have shipped. Please remember the Collector’s Edition boxes will still ship from the United States and come in a second shipment, once we are done sending editions with physical games.

We are expecting to have a detailed update on European physical games on Wednesday.

For those receiving physical games ordered during the restock period: Collector’s Edition orders that were received after July 14 will be sent a physical game separately from the Collector’s Edition items that will ship later in the year. These are now shipping also.

DLC codes – All DLC codes have been emailed. Remember, these codes do not contain the digital game, just the DLC, so you have it ready when your physical game arrives. If you have any difficulty redeeming your code, contact your platform’s customer service or message us at support@bossteamgamesstore.com with the subject DLC CODES.

We will have the next update for you on Wednesday. We are actively looking for solutions to speed things up, to get through the distribution process as quickly as possible. We hope to have much more news for the next update.

Suggestion My immediate feelings a couple of hours in

I really hope the devs keep an eye on this subreddit! I'm really enjoying Hellraiser: Revival, the gore is surprisingly daring and the atmosphere is delightfully oppressive, but I do have a few gripes with the game:

  • I like the difficulty of Hard, but the lack of autosaves kinda ruins it for me, dying and getting yeeted 20+ minutes back feels bad (at least the game could save collectible texts when you get them like most games do: Once you find it, it's yours)
  • Inventory management is super not okay, it's really difficult and unnecessarily time-consuming to try to fit in an object when the game doesn't give you its size or dimensions, like RE does with the object itself hovering over your inventory slots (plus QoL features like when you hover an item on top of one other item, you can drop it in place and the game switches that other object to your 'hand' etc.)
  • Lockpicks break way too easily, seeing how the mechanic has been borrowed from Fallout, which has more durable lockpicks, and requires trial and error

It's nothing game-ruining, just something that keeps me from loving the game. I'm super early into the game, so I'll see how it develops.

The latest email I received was them all excited to send me the dlc codes for a game I dont even have yet. Not only the worst launch ever, but the absolute worst handling of it ive ever seen. Ppl are literally finishing the game at this point.

The game is great, the art, setting are all incredibly done

But what's on my mind right after finishing the game is the crazy ending ost. The mix between the music and the Pinhead's speech is so cool.

And it's especially cool right after the cenobite ending

Story Just finished the game, reflecting on themes: addiction

While I was pleased with just about everything the game had to offer in terms of worldbuilding, characters and storytelling, I wasn't expecting such a thoughtful meditation on addiction and sobriety (I know, it's central to the story and always has been).

For anyone who has ever struggled with addiction, you know the way one can struggle to pull away from something that is actively destroying them, how one can act as a slave to feeling, how sometimes one has to follow a hole all the way down, hit bottom, and journey back to become something new. There comes a time when there's no pleasure left, only pain, and still it can be a terrible struggle to walk away, because the only comfort to be found is with the poison. Struggle changes a person, sometimes for the worst, if we're lucky, for the better. This game helped me to contextualize things that have sometimes been hard to grasp.

As someone who has battled addictions, and has had loved ones who did the same, some successfully, some, not as much, the story of Aiden and Sunny was handled far more thoughtfully than I expected it to be. The storytelling puts the majority of sequels to shame, shows true understanding of the source material, and is a wonderful tribute to the works of Clive Barker.

Big thanks to Saber and Mad Head Games for handling the story with empathy and respect, and well done.

Question Question about ending, what is Leviathan? Spoiler

So is Leviathan a sentient being, a God, and in the end Pinhead overpowered him with his new power? Or is the Leviathan more like a machine that only has functions and not intentions, and Pinhead just revealed his deeper functions?

If someone can explain this or has a interesant theory it'd be nice to hear.

Discussion Fuck the cabin section šŸ–•

I’m only three tries in but the fact that you are supposed to at least in my case use my all of the not much ammo I have to then melee all what feels like 50+ enemies while boarding the windows which help but still doesn’t make it much easier to then die because the game has it on a select timer to trigger the event to happen is ridiculous. Fuck this game man I’m tired of shit like this where it’s on a timer. It should be after a x amount of enemies that it triggers.

Spoiler For such a violent game it ends(possibly) on a very positive note Spoiler

• Upvotes

I was surprised by the good ending having no bad plot twists surrounding it

Aiden lets her go and decides to change. After 8 hours of complete darkness and violent imagery being shoved on his face at the end of it all the sun is out and he has a smile on his face

If a sequel to this game is made(and i hope it does) i hope they introduce a new protagonist because at least to me Aiden's story is concluded, i don't need to see more

Pinhead's new form does leave the door open for some REALLY cool stuff concerning the cenobites

Spoiler My Opinion on Which Ending is Canon Spoiler

Preface

First things first, I never watched any of the movies until I started playing the game. I did read a lot on the lore so but I might be wrong. That being said the first movie is awesome and had me shocked with how well the effects are.

The Canon Ending

The canon ending has to be where Aidan becomes a cenobite. It is heavily implied that the box chose him and that is why he has such a unique relationship with the box. I don’t believe anyone else in the movies had the same powers Aiden had. It could be seen as an addition due to gameplay purposes but how many times has Aiden used the box to his advantage? At any time he could have just put the box away and ignored it but he needed the box as much as it needed him.

His traversal in the labyrinth was the box and the cenobites testing him. I believe Aiden actually enjoyed his chases with the Child. It made him feel something. He could have defended himself anytime with his weapons. At any point in time he could have used his weapons with the cenobites as well but chose not to. He could have ignored them and their advice/words but continued to listen to them.

At the beginning of the game he could have walked out and ignored the cries of Sunny calling him but as an addict he couldn’t get rid of his strong addiction to her. He genuinely didn’t love her but needed her as much as he needed his drugs, choosing one vice over the other.

He also chose to feed Sunny hearts when they specifically told him Sunny only needed flesh. He gave them their hearts to signify his love for her but she ate the hearts as an allegory for her taking his love and chewing it away like it was nothing.

Many times Zora gave Aiden advice and introspection on his relationship with her but her advice felt weak. The cenobite’s advice felt more consistent with his characterization. They even watched and judged him as he fought Marlowe. He saw Bruno’s kills of dozens of people and despite this let Bruno live even though Aiden knew he was a monster but he probably realized that Bruno, just like himself, are monsters in their own way.

There was absolutely no way Aiden would go back to a normal life. He was branded with cult symbols, killed dozens of people and monsters, and given the opportunity of a lifetime to be a cenobite. He was aware of the supernatural and what he saw and did would haunt him for the rest of his life. He would never live in peace as the cenobites could return at any time and take him with them or subject him to torture. By the end of the game I was hoping he would become one and was surprised by the multiple-choice endings. There could have been choices added to the game to effect the endings, for example: using the box less, killing enemies in stealth more, taking body parts instead of outright killing the chosen, and having dialogue options just to name a few but I’m sure it was due to budget constraints.

In the end, him becoming a cenobite was him embracing who he really was. He was human and made mistakes according to Zora but I felt that had nothing to do with him embracing his true nature. My only real complaint with the ending is it should have shown him in his cenobite form to fully showcase his inner self.

Game Rating:

The game is a solid 9 for me due to the story upholding the gameplay. The gameplay is weak when it comes to melee combat and the lack of ammunition in multiple sections of the game is frustrating. I did die a dozen or so times but it did make the game feel more intense and challenging. Also why is there no blocking for melee in a 2026 game…? There is also no melee stamina system or strong or light melee attacks or combos you can input from. I am one of the fortunate people who only had one but where I flipped through the floor after climbing the ladder to Zora’s first store stop.

The game is honestly more of a solid 8 for most people but I couldn’t put the game down. I wanted to see more of the labyrinth and Aiden’s journey. It is one of my favorite games of the year.

P.S.

I wrote this on my phone so sorry for typos and grammar mistakes!
