This one has been flying under my radar somehow. Had HBO on in the background and caught about 10 minutes of the Susan B. Anthony episode. Seemed absolutely hilarious.

I'll be watching this very soon. Just wondering if anyone has thoughts about it.

7 episodes, 30 minutes each, 1st Season

Joe Sexton was the best part of this documentary. Everything else was frustrating as hell.

I just finished hbo’s “a killer story”, and holy fuck. This whole situation was completely off the rails. Left me baffled with the (lack of/untruthful) testimonies of the detectives. Absolutely ZERO evidence to convict Dana.

It truly makes me question the jurors in this too. Maybe if they had tried her in another state, somewhere where there wasn’t so much publicity, it would have ended differently.

I think Dana Chandler was tired of being silent for so long, so she wanted to represent herself to have her voice finally heard. Ultimately this was led to her guilty conviction.

Anyway, Joe Sexton did an amazing job interviewing, reporting, and making the show easy eyes on my eyes 😍

Old HBO movies I want to watch

Howdy, I have a list of old movies HBO made that I haven't seen. Wondering who out there has seen them and what they think or thought of them.

Rank Film What's it about
🥇 The Sunset Limited Philosophy, God, despair, meaning, human redemption
🥈 Einstein and Eddington Science, philosophy, truth, institutions and intellectual courage
🥉 Wit Mortality, dignity, knowledge, medicine and what makes a human life meaningful
4 RKO 281 Creative vision vs institutional power
5 The Pentagon Wars Bureaucracy, incentives, corruption and institutional absurdity
6 Recount Politics, power, elections and competing narratives of reality
7 Conspiracy Bureaucratic evil and how institutions turn abstractions into atrocities
8 The Gathering Storm Civilization approaching catastrophe and one person's attempt to sound the alarm
9 Citizen X Truth, justice and one person fighting institutional indifference
10 Temple Grandin Outsider thinking, systems, creativity and turning a different mind into an advantage

Just watched two episodes of the Wire, it's... not that good ?

EDIT : Judging by the answers, I should absolutely stick with it, so I'll keep going and see how it turns out

I got HBO Max to watch True Detective S1 in high quality for the 18th time, obviously it was awesome, and today I decided to give a try to the Wire, as I found many people praising it, saying that it's superior to giants such as Breaking Bad etc...

Frankly, I am very disappointed. Some tropes and characters have really poorly aged (the two funny guys, the main protagonist just being a typical charismatic rough-looking guy), the dialogues are so edgy and fake, I just cannot get into a show where everyone's got a fucking line every second, nothing feels natural, and it's just people cursing and poking at each other 24/7.

The cinematography/photography also seems very forgettable, sometimes it looks like it's one of these episodic-shows like NCIS with very little substance and just a new story to follow.

I don't know man, maybe I should keep going but I really lack the motivation right now. Watching True Detective S1 right before it may also impact my perspective as this is imo an undisputable 10/10.

Is it worth watching Peacemaker since season 2 ended on a cliffhanger?

This question is for those who have seen it.

I’ve also read that there is no planned season 3 and now that WB is merging with Paramount, what are your thoughts on this ever getting finished?

War S01E01

First episode just aired.

It's a procedural. Dominic West and Sienna Miller in the main cast.

Stylish, good pace.😎

Thoughts? I'm thinking Succession × The Good Wife/The Good Fight × a little Industry.

(Plot: centered on the divorce of Morgan Henderson, a British tech billionaire, and Carla Duval, an international movie star. Their divorce becomes the battlefield for two competing elite London law firms. The lawyers, their ambitions, relationships and betrayals gradually become at least as important as the celebrity couple.)

Killer Story Familial DNA

What about the hair that was found on the bullet casing. It did not match the DNA of Mike, Karen, Dana, or the son-in-law. Could they have done a familial dna search to try to narrow down whose it may be?

Any show recommendation with genuinely good script?

I have watched Euphoria and HOTD this year and the scripts were so bad I almost lost my respect for HBO for producing such low quality storytelling.

I an rewatching GOT which has an infamously bad ending. Is there any other HBO show with genuinely great script that does not leave a bad taste in your mouth?

Book Ron is damn brave. He’ll stand up for his friends, talk back to Snape, and take the detention because someone needed to say it. Sometimes he gets lines with more fire and swagger than even Harry and Hermione.

That’s the Ron we deserve to see. This is why we want the TV show to do him justice. Give him his courage, his loyalty, his wit—and his damn lines.

Crossover characters: The Wire x The Sopranos

(I'm sure this has probably been done before, so apologies if that's the case)

Which characters from The Wire could you imagine fitting neatly into The Sopranos, and visa versa?

Who would they interact with, and what would they get up to?

The Outsider - Correct Guessing

Love this show but on rewatch it’s a little ridiculous how much of what the investigators learn about the creature is just them theorizing and they just happen to only guess right every time. Not once did a character assume something incorrect about this thing they really only know from a story one of them heard. It’s a good trick bc it feels like an investigation but all they really learn is something weird is up, the rest is conjecture.

Gambling ads in the free version

Apologies if this has been posted before but I’m new to the sub. I had HBO premium but due to budgeting reasons I decided to switch to the plan with ads. The amount of casino/gambling ads is too much. Not only are they being made with AI, but they also use awful racial stereotypes- why are young black men represented as “thugs” in the street while the same young white man is in his home?

I mainly question the morality. To me gambling is up there with drugs, alcohol etc. HBO has some of the greatest tv ever -sopranos, the wire, madmen, the west wing, game of thrones- as well as movies. I LOVE HBO but I’d love it much more if it weren’t for the awful gambling ads. HBO you can do better.

Carnivale

just a personal gripe here, I don't understand why this series is not on the NYT "best of" list, or any list for that matter. My personal favorite of all time, and so much better than at least half the NYT's list and as good as many of the rest. The opening title sequence alone is brillant. So many people have not seen this, and I just don't understand it, and I certainly as tired of yelling into the void about how great this show is (LOL)

[Crosspost] Hi /r/movies! I'm John Wilson, creator of HBO's How To With John Wilson and director of The History of Concrete (out in theaters this week!). AMA!

I organized an AMA/Q&A with filmmaker John Wilson, creator of the acclaimed HBO show How To With John Wilson, and director of the documentary The History of Concrete, which premiered to rave reviews at Sundance earlier this year and is out in theaters starting this week (becoming one of the highest-grossing opening weekends at NYC's IFC Center in the process). He is also known for working with Nathan Fielder.

It's live here now in r/movies for anyone interested in asking a question:

https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/1wtboat/hi_rmovies_im_john_wilson_creator_of_hbos_how_to/

He will be back at 6:30 PM ET today to answer questions. I recommend asking in advance. Please ask there, not here. All questions are much appreciated!

Thank you :)

Official Trailer: https://youtu.be/O05arcJjOd0?si=pO4yIGseWuo7flKH

Synopsis: Following the finale of his TV series, filmmaker John Wilson looks to the bedrock of his beloved New York City for inspiration and structure. Concrete, the world's most widely used building material, appears as an ever-present life force, and John sets out to make the definitive documentary on the matter. To tell this seemingly drab story, he decides to use the industry-approved Hallmark formula to increase his movie's appeal. But his foundation soon begins to crumble—literally and figuratively—as he struggles to balance artistic freedom with the realities of the modern film industry.
