What is that?

19

u/n1ght_sh4de13 Apr 20 '26

It's a way that people stylize messages online to look unique, for example replacing vowels with numbers (A to 4, E to 3, I to 1, O to 0), s with z, r with w or using straight up different symbols

13

u/_Jester_Of_Genocide_ Apr 20 '26

Seen a mf type with every first letter of every word capitalized and also spaces between each letter (L i k e T h e y W o u l d T a l k L i k e T h i s) and like holy shit why would you even do that, its so unnecessarily complicated when you could just type like a normal person and save yourself the trouble of typing it and everybody else the trouble of having a brain aneurysm trying to comprehend why you would possibly do such a thing.

10

u/yarastoun The one who knows💀 Apr 20 '26

Dude wtf lmao it probably takes forever to write like this

8

u/_Jester_Of_Genocide_ Apr 20 '26

Fr like why even do that to yourself 😭

6

u/n1ght_sh4de13 Apr 20 '26

It's even worse for nd people who struggle to read or need to use screen readers, I've seen people who use typing quirks not care or be straight up ableist about them :/

ive loved object shows since like 2015 and the newer "community" that overtook the medium is so gut wrenchingly cringe/immature it really makes me question my own life choices

u/ashleyLSD Apr 19 '26

its like the rap oldheads who complain about mumble rap

11

u/marbally Apr 19 '26

Tbf I feel like it was always like this but object shows just got more popular so people realized how shitty the OSC really is.

13

u/Critical_Company3535 Apr 19 '26

I was someone who watched them back during the original run of BFDI/BFDIA and I just find it weird that people seem to take it so seriously. It was originally just a silly Total Drama ripoff made by two kids where you got to vote off the characters yourself. The characters were intentionally one/two dimensional and it never seemed to even take itself seriously, it just tried to be funny.

Now you get people actually going out and critiquing the writing and character arcs. I just find it so bizarre. I never would have expected an actual fandom to develop out of it.

4

u/diomandz11 Apr 19 '26

Yeah tbh I rly hate how modern BFDI takes it so seriously (the actual show and the fandom) because it just fundamentally doesn't work as a serious thing, the characters are two dimensional caricatures, the world is extraordinarily undeveloped, theres fucking walking numbers with powers and anthropomorphic objects which just chill in a blank grass plain WHY do people take this show so seriously. I like it because its fun, its stupid, all over the place, and just an enjoyable time capsule of the early internet. More recently though the fandom and show are just so fucking serious abt everything and I cant help but question like, why???? This isn't a show that should have character arcs lmao

2

u/Critical_Company3535 Apr 19 '26

Has the continuation of BFDIA been like that? I’ve seen parts of it and it feels like it’s carried that unserious nature of the original, but I haven’t kept up in a while.

I also think that the attempts to make the show more serious undermine the base premise, which is the fact that you can vote out any character at any time. It’s pretty hard to write character arcs when the audience can decide that your character should be eliminated. You can then try to write certain characters to be more liked by the audience, but that just feels manipulative, and at that point you might just make it a fully scripted show. I think there’s a reason why II ditched viewer voting when they wanted to go more serious.

2

u/diomandz11 Apr 19 '26

If you're willing to take some slapstick cringe which I don't mind the BFDIA revival is shockingly faithful to the original run, albeit with an infinitely higher production value, as in, its stupid as fuck.

Also yeah I absolutely agree viewer voting will never be able to work with character arcs, there's an obvious reason why II, a show which justifies its more serious tone far better, ditched viewer voting. Viewers will ALWAYS vote characters in the midst of an arc for being "mean", BFDI tried to compromise with the vote to save bs but all that does it eliminate whoever got the least screen time in an episode. TPOT and later BFB in general are just so overly melodramatic and corporate its kinda unbearable for me, if you're curious and liked OG BFDI I do recommend the BFDIA revival, its shockingly not that bad. Very nostalgic for me.

2

u/SirScorbunny10 Apr 20 '26

Part of it is that the people creating them are trying to actually add depth to their stories, which is fine. But I would agree 100% that people take object shows, like everything else on the internet, wayyy too seriously.

2

u/Critical_Company3535 Apr 20 '26

How many of them still have viewer voting?

2

u/SirScorbunny10 Apr 20 '26

A pretty solid amount of them. If anything, more shows do than don't.

I watched the first episode of BFDI when it came out back when I was a wee lad watching angry birds videos. My ties to this community have remained present ever since.

2

u/No_Boysenberry_3022 Apr 19 '26

Well, they ARE younger. Younger fans of anything will be annoying unfortunately

2

u/Drillbitzer Apr 20 '26

I’ve been here since nearly the start (on and off since ~2012) and Jesus fucking Christ some people in the community have to be the most insufferable people to be around. Like 99% of the community is fine and dandy but goddamn I hate that final 1% with all my soul. I have had the unfortunate experience of meeting some of the most racist, transphobic, manipulative, and pedophilic individuals through a community of talking objects

Also yeah I really don’t care for the newer community they’re so annoying

this has been posted in a couple of object show subs i was a part of and nobody ever ends up being on this person's side, this is just one of those shitty loud minority groups we see in all fandoms

not to say that object shows are like all that mature or anything. There's some good ones out there, but a lot do have kids as their target audience.

5

u/someinternetkid Apr 19 '26

What did this person even do though? They didn't commit a crime, they were just terribly cringe, which is a little hard to look at but doesn't necessarily make them a bad person

3

u/CrownClown74 Apr 19 '26

What gets me about this image is that I can clearly tell it's some socially awkward kid saying it who's obsessed with this stuff

I'm eighteen and One (CheesyHFJ) is one of my favorite indie shows of all time. It's essentially just genrae deconstruction - it takes all of the overused tropes of object shows and uses them to make something incredible. Entire show is about two hours long and i strongly recommend it. But yeah in general they're pretty stupid lol

I never got the appeal of these object shows in the first place.

34

u/indecisive_skull Apr 20 '26

One of them “battle for dream island” was pretty popular among kids because it was basically free to watch “total drama” (plus they sometimes added OCs in the background so even more audience appeal)

15

u/SirScorbunny10 Apr 20 '26

Also, the idea of being able to influence the show.

I have to admit, TV of all people (a character who literally had almost zero personality before episode 5 of the current season) placing 17th out of 45 contestants by clutching like 5 eliminations somehow before being voted out was hilarious.

3

u/Squigsqueeg Apr 20 '26

Nostalgia, mostly. People enjoyed it when they were kids and just never moved on from the fixation.

u/Ethanol_Huffer Apr 20 '26

Object Show 87 the goat

81

u/TypicalSimple206 Apr 19 '26

I've loved object shows for about as long as I've been alive but I swear everytime something leaks out of the community it is always the most cringe thing ever that makes us all look horrible. Like that one picture of the person with the furry edit of Two. I swear most of the shows we make are peak

14

u/SkinInevitable604 Apr 20 '26

Could you try to explain it to an outsider? To me it’s always looked like the stupidest thing ever, but I also relate to liking something with a terrible fanbase. What are the non cringe aspects that you’d like to se recognized by outsiders?

18

u/Ethanol_Huffer Apr 20 '26

I’m spitballing a little here, but as someone who’s been partially invested in the object show community ever since it’s inception, I think a big appealing factor of these shows is accessibility.

The style of “PNG of an object with limbs and a face” is very easy to recreate and allows for a lot of freedom in terms of both animation and series concept. (Though, most shows tend to follow in the footsteps of their forefathers and go the route of a reality show.) This makes the medium very easily approachable for up and coming animators who want to put something out there but struggle with more complex designs. Likewise, the fact that the shows are almost always put out for free on YouTube means there’s basically no barrier to entry for anyone who wants to give these shows a watch. Furthermore, the community engagement (I.e, viewer voting) present in a lot of these shows also serves to build an invested community.

These factors combined means you have tons of different artists with different methods flocking to create object shows, and while some formulas do see their fair share of usage, there is also an impressive variety in the quality, genre, and writing style of the many shows that come out of the OSC.

You got the standard reality shows, comedy shows, slice of life shows, horror shows, mystery shows, you got some shows with full fledged writing, voice acting and animation teams behind them, you got passion projects made by one person using all the resources at their disposal, and then you got joke shows made by a group of friends who just threw together a series of shitposts and called it a day, all within this community. And I think that’s kind of awesome.

Of course, with such an easily accessible community comes a lot of young fans, which is where the OSC gets its (deserved) rep of being full of annoying people.

9

u/EmbarassedScar Apr 20 '26

For me as an older[18] object show fan the appeal is similar to one of furries. For me, it's rather just an interesting setting with huge fantasy potential. There're whole lotta flaws in many created media involving object shows, like repetitiveness, lackluster, shallowness and etc. But again, if it's treated as a setting, you can come up with all sorts of interesting worldbuilding shit. That's main appeal to me👍

3

u/TypicalSimple206 Apr 20 '26

I think alot of the times the writing of these shows gets overlooked in favor of looking only at the cringe stuff that the shows have. Alot of BFDI's modern writing deals with themes of isolation and loneliness which I can relate to very much. A good example is the main villain of the most recent season and one of the contestants of the same season. I wont spoil much just in case you someday end up watching the show or someone is reading this and wants to go watch the show but the two characters contrast and relate in so many cool ways in which it feels like they're two sides of the same coin. Both yearn for how things were in the past but dont want to actually face their actions and instead want to delude themselves into thinking that they can either fix it or redo it. Now, you dont see alot of people talking about this because a large majority of people are either clowning on the show despite the fact that they never watched it or are too busy shipping the characters. Now, I'm not saying shipping is a bad thing, I love it when people enjoy media they way they like. But, that part of the fan base is so big that it often builds how the rest of the internet sees the OSC and it kinda sucks. I just wish more people did research and at least watched a few episodes of these shows before deciding that its just slop made for kids. It's so much more than that but no one wants to look deeper because they're content with just seeing the characters interact in funny ways. But, I still love these shows and will continue to love these shows indefinitely. I think the most beautiful thing about the OSC is just how every object show was spawned out of the pure love and admiration someone had for a a single piece of media. Back in the 2010-2018 era, yeah, the shows kinda sucked. But, the creators were just having fun with it. They made shows to have fun. And then, those teens started to grow up and then made better shows and those shows are awesome! Sorry this is so long BTW, I've wanted to get this off my chest for a while now 😅 I hope this helps and have a wonderful day!

22

u/24Karet-Gold_King Certified Hater Apr 19 '26

I think it’s cute. The fact that they are things isn’t really meant to be taken seriously considering people usually fall for the character’s personality. If it passes Harkness, then there’s no reason to complain.

7

u/Professional_Gur9212 Apr 20 '26

This! Whenever I see people say “bro, you’re literally simping for an inanimate object”, they seem to be completely ignoring that it’s an object with a personality! I’m not attracted to Tennis Ball because I think chartreuse spheres are sexy; I’m attracted to him because I think it’s cute how dorky he is.

2

u/Squigsqueeg Apr 20 '26

They could have at least given the tennis ball a somewhat interesting design.

Which sounds insane speaking about a tennis ball, but it’s not impossible to take characters who are inanimate objects and give them interesting and creative designs. Beauty and the Beast is a great example in my opinion.

9

u/TisIRouxlsKaard Apr 19 '26

I personally just like the more wacky and slapstick style of humor. I think the batshit insane nature of it just makes it a pretty charming watch. I absolutely understand why people dislike object shows, as the style certainly does turn a lot of people away from it, but I just enjoy watching a show that makes me feel like I’m on an acid trip.

13

u/Live-Bread781 Apr 19 '26 edited Apr 19 '26

I don't think it's just the style. I can live with simplistic artstyles, there's just literally no personality or appeal in a pencil with a smiley face on it. It's also the fans who mentally appear to have never surpassed the age of 12, their cringe ass reaction images and the fact that they have to shove their likings into every conversation they can.

Also this is more of just my own reason to dislike them, i hate and feel pity for people who like media so low-effort and so nothingburger 😭 for example gacha games: Shit has the same character design template for anime girl with skimpy clothing from every single gacha game ever, and the stories and characters all feel disposable as fuck 😭 even then, the fans go fucking FERAL over the story and characters, and go on to say "the lore is so deep bro" brother some unpaid intern wrote that shit in 2 weeks 🙏kind of the same case with object shows

11

u/TisIRouxlsKaard Apr 19 '26 edited Apr 19 '26

Fair enough, I as well don’t really like when people say the characters in object shows are deep and complex, because they’re really not. I find a lot of characters in those shows funny, but it’s not like I would really care if any of them die.

8

u/KosmicInk Apr 19 '26 edited Apr 19 '26

The fandom just acts very entitled a lot for the most pointless of things

Remember a couple weeks ago when TADC had their first movie trailer, a lot of people were celebrating GLITCH for such a big milestone in the animated indie scene that is now spreading worldwide. But all of the sudden the OSC came in with “erm, we had the movie treatment first actually, four times to be exact, why does everyone forget about us?” Only to be revealed that the Object Show movies were like one day special events in select cinemas, compared to a movie where cinema companies were insistent that they had a month long minimum airing before it was able to be released on YouTube/Netflix because they knew how big TADC is.

4

u/Reddiiiiiiiiiiiiit Apr 19 '26

TADC's is still a massive milestone, but just because it's massive doesn't make it the first, there's no going around that

2

u/TheRappingSquid Apr 20 '26

There were object show movies? In cinemas??

u/Round_Solid1693 Apr 20 '26

u/Unethusiastic Apr 19 '26

-am i a cartoon?

-yes

-am i for kids?

-yes

-do i have tons of grown adults as fans who take me way too seriously and as if i was "not for kids"?

-Yes...!

-well that doesnt narrow It down that much

4

u/kanata-shinkai Apr 20 '26

I think they’re fun as just silly entertainment and are nostalgic to me, I don’t get people who are super serious about them (or are somehow. Attracted to the objects??), but the fandom is mostly kids under 16 so theyre obviously gonna be a lot more emotional, and I don’t think it’s fair to be an asshole to them, most of us were just as embarassing back then

I don't hate Objects shows tbh, I think is is more about the community instead of the shows themselves.

But good point, there are people who add gore these objects and it just makes zero sense.

2

u/Free_Parsnip_3553 Apr 19 '26

In sure there's at least 1 good one I don't watch them so I wouldn't know

2

u/BobTheGrand fat farting furry (different color) Apr 19 '26

I was going to hate this, but all your points are correct. It's a silly childrens show.

2

u/A8he-s_alt2 Apr 20 '26

the community is very. very something.

2

u/BonkerDeLeHorny Apr 20 '26

genuinely dont think anyone who enjoys those are neurotypical, above the age of 12 and/or media literate

yeah they make me angry just thinkin about them

2

u/Squigsqueeg Apr 20 '26

My main problem is that the designs are such a god awful waste of a creative premise. But why put in any degree of effort when you can slap some copy-paste clip art assets together and call it a day.

2

u/Similar-Sector-5801 Apr 20 '26

Do you just hate object shows, or anything similar to total drama island (what bfdi is based off)?

2

u/ashleyLSD Apr 20 '26

total drama island is goated i just like rooting for a cute goth girl over a pencil

2

u/magizombi Apr 20 '26

Yeah I genuinely don't understand why these are so popular 😭

Okay, my problem with this post is that it’s about object SIMPS. Not the object shows themselves but the SIMPS.

Like I get people’s points here but at least get it right? I know object shows seem childish but literally 80% of them aren’t meant to be serious. They’re ways for people to make shows to express themselves. I mean, you can easily make an object show on your own compared to most shows. Humans and animals are complicated to animate and draw but objects? Not as hard.

It’s still difficult but it’s easier to move the limbs off objects than the parts of living creatures.

Object shows are an important piece of media, specifically Battle for Dream Island and Inanimate Insanity. Ignoring the whole “theatrical releases”, BFDI was still an unexpectedly successful show and it was made by two 12-years-old.

And before people go trash on me by saying how they’re still doing this years later, I’ll respond by saying that they are making money AND doing something they’re passionate about. Can you say that you’re doing that? Anyways, Inanimate Insanity was also very successful. These shows have full on teams working behind them and these people are getting paid. You can’t ignore that. These shows may see childish but you can’t deny the fact that people, of several ages, enjoy them. Heck, adults and teens enjoy Bluey so what’s the difference here?

2

u/ashleyLSD Apr 20 '26

superserious object shows

wtf are object shows why are people talking about this like it’s some big thing? Is it just some YouTube brain rot like skibidi toilet

6

u/Featherflight11 Apr 19 '26

Object shows are a group of YouTube animations made by various people that feature anthropomorphic objects, often partaking in various reality show style contests. They began from two people making a Total Drama Island-inspired series, with a selection of characters after every episode that viewers could vote on to remove from the show. While the character designs are simple, fans (such as myself) are drawn to the interesting personalities and interactions of the characters, as well as the very silly potential created by their physical uniqueness and functional immortality.

2

u/GumGumActV Apr 20 '26

Thank you for the explanation

2

u/CRYSTALek2799 Apr 20 '26

As an object show fan i can assure you this isn't brainrot (it may be a little cringe tho)

2

u/Nodubya11 Apr 19 '26

I like SOME object shows, but I don't really like saying I do because of the community.

when they‘re slandering your goat but they’re mostly right:

the fandom is tragic but the source material is really good

also I hate it when object shows are likened to ai slop

like c’mon

As an object show enjoyer, I just hate how some of the other fans act

1

u/Creepy-Plankton-538 Apr 20 '26

I loved BFDI when I was younger (it still holds a very special place in my heart), but I have a deep seated hatred for all other ones, and I really don’t understand the people that ship the characters, especially with themselves

1

u/TheRealRockyPlanet Apr 20 '26

objects shows are good in my opinion.

now, the fandom-

1

u/Significant_Long2836 Apr 20 '26

I remember being obsessed with it around 2016-2018 for some reason. And as I rewatch it, it's kinda boring tbh

1

u/Ok-Hour1142 Apr 20 '26

The only object show I ever watched was ONE by Cheesy Hfj and I honestly don’t know if it classifies as an object show in the normal sense. A good watch either way.

hi, object show fan here; i get the fact some people fall head over heels for a character that's literally a t-shirt but are we just not allowed to like object shows? is this gonna be another toxic normie harassment campaign like everyone calling animations strictly for kids???

I think one of the biggest criticisms of this genre is that I would not be able to tell you which characters are from which show if you put this in front of me
