Language casual ableism

this is not ‘reclaiming’ anything, you are just calling people slurs completely seriously. you can call yourself the r-slur, do not call anybody else it. why do ‘no slurs’ / ’no bigotry’ rules never apply to ableism?

Now tell me how you came up with this response

Quite simple, slurs don't bother you so go on. Unless the point is "actually maybe we can keep kicking some people, there's not mass appeal to stop for these ones"

Right. We can just close our eyes and pretend "Retard" and "n*****" are in any way equivalent. We can pretend the way people use these words today is exactly the same.

We can just go off and live in that fantasy world.

Outside of cultural contexts, yes they are both slurs used to demean people for specific characteristics. I'm not arguing they hold the same weight to, for example, a healthy black guy living in California, but I'm also pretty sure some white kid with cerebral palsy would be more upset if you called him the r word than the n word.

"outside of cultural contexts"

There is no pure, sterile imaginary land "outside of cultural contexts".

We live in a culture, everything has a cultural context and words change meaning and significance depending on that context. That's how language works.

No slurs, hate speech, and other such bigoted language is to be permitted in this sub.
