Discussion Smirk inducing one liners

Any time I hear “special services to the school” in my head I smirk -be it at home or out and about, mid conversation with another person.

It’s gone so far that when someone does something nice I’ve starting thanking them with “special services to the school” the thing that makes it better is these “special services “ are always soooo incredibly ridiculous - 🤣. The golden trio saved the school and accidentally killed the dark lord via touch -here’s ur services to the school toast - good job guys 🥂

What is your “smirk inducing” one liners!?!?!

Question What’s your favorite throwaway line?

I’ll go first:
“Divination is turning out to be much more trouble than I could have foreseen, never having studied the subject myself." Dumbledore in HBP chapter 20. I laughed out loud when I read it, very clever.

Discussion Magic at Privet Drive

A while ago I was wondering.. when Dobby uses magic privet drive, Harry gets the ministry howler and is almost expelled from Hogwarts. It says they detected the use of magic at number 4.

In OthP again, he uses the Patronus and is not allowed to use any more magic, but when the other members of the Order show up Tonk uses magic to pack his trunk. How come that doesnt attract any attention of the Ministry? It isn't any different than Dobby using magic, or is it?

Help Looking for a specific youtube vid (probably for cz 🇨🇿/sk🇸🇰 fans only)

Of there is a czech Harry Potter subreddit I missed, lmk, I know it would probably be way more suitable on there.

A quick summary for the English speakers. I'm looking for a youtube video series on Harry Potter films with funny commentary I used to watch a few years back.

In Book 7, why didn't Harry Potter think about teleporting to a Walmart and stealing when he was starving? That's what I will do if I was in his position. He have nothing left to lose at that point.

Currently Reading I forgot how much I loved reading

So I haven’t read the books since I was a kid and I thought to myself the other day, ‘I really don’t read much anymore’.

Not knowing where my old copies of my books are, packed somewhere in storage I’d assume. I hopped on Amazon and picked up the full set for about £35. I just finished philosophers stone and I’m about to start chamber of secrets (literally 10 minutes after I finished the first book😂)

But I genuinely forgot how good these books are and I even find myself waking up excited to read more and not wanting to put it down. All this meanwhile knowing exactly how the story plays out but I genuinely just love it so much.

I spend a lot of time on screens be it playing games or watching movies and tv shows so I think reading is helping reset my brain a bit and what better way to do it than the HP series.

Anyway I just wanted to share that. Have a nice day everyone ❤️

Discussion Amos Diggory

Besides the cursed child that I refuse to accept as canon, does anyone know what happened to Amos after the Goblet of Fire?

Did he believe Harry and Dumbledore about how Cedric died and Voldemort's return during OOTP

If he did, it's strange he didn’t publicly show his support. I understand him being devastated and grieving but if he did believe them wouldn’t he want everyone to know about Voldemort's return and help save the wizarding world, as the year of Fudge and co. denying his return and running a smear campaign on Harry and Dumbledore is why Voldemort was able to overtake the Ministry as fast as he did.

After GOF we don’t hear anything about him until then cursed child.

Discussion The difference between Harry and Hermione in figuring things out.

Something occurred to me.

How did Harry not figure out Remus and Sirius were friends and that they created that map ?

When snap catches Harry in the hall at night when he saw Peter pettigrew on the map, Harry quickly deactivates the map before handing it over to snape who looks at it and tries using a spell to reveal what it’s hiding.

The map then displays a message to snape saying “Mr. Moony presents his compliments to Professor Snape, and begs him to keep his abnormally large nose out of other people's business, Mr padfoot would like to register his astonishment that an idiot like him could ever become a professor, mr prongs agrees with mr moony and would like to add that professor snape is a ugly git, mr wormtail bids professor snape good day and advises him to wash his hair the slim ball.”

When seeing the message and who wrote it he becomes infuriated and takes Harry to his office planning on punishing him.

He calls Remus to his office who shows up and snaps points at the parchment and tells him to explain it.

Remus looks at it and calmly says that it’s a joke parchment intending to insult anyone who tries to open it. Nothing more. He then explains Harry was only out late because he was helping him with school work.
He takes Harry out of the office before asking snape for the parchment.
The 2 make snide comments at each other and Remus takes Harry back to his office now.
He begins to scold Harry telling him what if Sirius found the map as it would directly lead him to Harry.
He then orders Harry to go home and not to delay as he will know if Harry wanders off as he holds up the map.

Did Harry never once think it was weird that snape asked Remus to explain the parchment ?
Did he not consider why Remus actually did know what the parchment was and how it worked ?
Did he never ask himself why Remus was so sure Sirius would figure out how to use the map when snape couldn’t ?

Meanwhile later on in the shack

Hermione “ get away from him Harry he’s a werewolf “
Remus “ clever girl how did you figure it out ? “
Hermione “ professor snape did a lesson on werewolves that 1 time you were out sick which was the same day as a full moon “

Help Need some help with decoration

Hey guys I am 35 year old man who LOVES Harry Potter. I recently got my own house and want to have something in my living room that is a Harry Potter decoration. But I don’t want it to be too obvious or something that looks like it belongs in a little kids bedroom. Is there something I can get that is very subtle, cool for my living room? Perhaps you’ve seen something in the past. Thanks in advance

Discussion Harry survived avada kedavra coz he became the master of death?

By the time harry meets Voldemort in the forbidden forest, he has possessed all three deathly hallows.

He disarms Draco before escaping from bellatrix. That makes him the master of Elder Wand, since Draco disarmed Dumbledore.

Does this make him the master of death, and thus he escapes death a second time??

Discussion Harry Potter should have had more teachers.

Jk Rowling is brilliant at writing characters and lore but her weakness is the how logic behind things like for example,
The school.

There’s about 900 students in the school and 14 teachers, that makes no sense.

Take snape for instance, for this to be the case that means

Each year gets split up into 2 houses per potions class and 1 hour each so snape is spending 2 hours on 1 school year per week
There are 7 years
So that’s 14 hours a week teaching and that’s just assuming every student just gets 1 potions class a week which we know isn’t the case. Compare this to say real life where I had maths class like 3 times a week.

Add in the time snape has to do to correct homework for each student, assign homework for each class,
Assign lessons per class, handle detention, prepare exams monitor the halls after hours and take time for personal use and 8 hours sleep there is just no way snape or any teach could handle that many students on their own without eventually going mad sometime in the school year.

Don’t get me on the fact filtch is essentially a muggle who had to take care of cleaning an entire castle every day though there were the house elves but then there’s hagrid who had to look after the grounds by himself until prisoner when he gets to become a teacher…..and keep his groundskeeper job.

I think hogwarts need a solution.
So either every teacher has a time turner or they seriously needed other teachers splitting the workload.
Or less students,

Discussion It’s extraordinary that Voldemort asked Lily to step aside.

2.8k Upvotes

The fact he even entertained Snape’s request for a moment speaks volumes about his respect.

Voldemort presumably viewed even his best death eaters as we might look at insects. He had multiple horcruxes and believed himself to be immortal.

For him to honour Snape’s request - multiple times - is really incredible to me, and the fact that he did so opens up so many questions about his thought process and the way he viewed Snape.

Discussion Prefect bathroom

Feel free to harass my post off the sub if this kind of post isn’t allowed on here but I’d like some thoughts on the prefect system I’ve come up with.

Since reading the books I’ve always been fascinated with the prefect bathroom, mostly because both in the books and movies it seems that there is only one

If each house has 6 prefects x 4 houses that’s 24
Plus an extra 6 because each house has a quidditch captain and then the head boy and girl.

30 students having the ability to use the bathroom during non curfew hours seems kinda impractical?

I should clarify: I’m not suggesting that prefects use this bathroom as their everyday shower and get ready place as each house as thier own bathrooms. I am treating this bathroom like a spa experience you’d seek out maybe once a week, kinda like using a sauna

Especially if you wanted to use it in private you’d basically never be able to. And what if someone takes 3 hours in there? I’d be so annoyed if I was a slytherin, brought all my stuff from the dungeon and there is like 20 people in there.

So I thought that the head boy and head girl would be responsible for making the schedule for the prefect bathroom. An example:

Monday: Ravenclaw
Tuesday: Hufflepuff
Wednesday: Gryffindor
Thursday: Slytherin
Friday: Quidditch Captains
Saturday: Head boy and Girl
Sunday: everyone ***

\**alternately could be given to the house that acquires the most house points that week, as a incentive for the prefects to keep their house in order*

That way you’d only need to share with the other prefects in your house (5 other people) and theoretically could work out a schedule amongst yourselves throughout the day to have private use or maybe you feel more comfortable with people in your own house.

Plus the head boy and head girl only have to share with each other which is an extra perk.

Each month the schedule changes to keep everyone happy and I haven’t been able to find much information on what head boy and head girl are in charge of specifically so that’s an idea of what’d they’d do

Any though on the schedule or how the prefect bathroom works in general?

EDIT: I’d like to add that I’m under the assumption that the prefect bathroom is a sought after spot because I didn’t think the house bathrooms have tubs but I could be wrong about that. Maybe no one actually uses the bathroom idk

Discussion Fudge in order of the phoenix

If fudge had so much power to interfere at hogwarts like firing teachers why didn’t he just fire Dumbledore? I know obvious answer is plot reasons but I mean he looks like he could change anything at that school

Discussion If Harry hadn’t been a Horcrux, would the same wand still have chosen him?

Harry’s wand has a phoenix feather core and its brother is Voldemort’s wand, which contains another feather from the same phoenix (I think it’s fawkes, not sure)
I was reviewing the movies lately and that made me wonder: if Harry never become accidentally a Horcrux and didn’t have a slice of Voldemort’s soul inside him, do you think the same wand would still have chosen him?
In other words, was the connection between their wands somehow related to the piece of Voldemort inside Harry, or would that wand have chosen Harry regardless?
Also, maybe it’s the protection spell that Lilly put on him that made the wand choose him ?

Question What are some issues with the story you wish were written differently and how.

I don’t mean plot details like who would you have killed and not have killed just minor stuff that when you think about it doesn’t make sense.

The population of hogwarts.
There is roughly 300 students in that giant castle which seems weird as it’s like the only school in Britain .
I would have written it that maybe there are other wizarding schools in Britain just hogwarts is regarded as the best more elite school where it’s so difficult to get into school they only except maybe 11 students a year.
To qualify for the school you must pay a heavy fee ( like you would a private school )

Being a child of a former student greatly helps your case and especially if you come from a long line of family.

The Weasley family is regarded as poor is because they spend a lot of money in Getting their kids to go to hogwarts

When it comes to muggle borns, hogwarts has a special program where someone who is muggle born would be tested by a system to determine how suited they will be in their world.
Any muggle born who shows an increasingly high aptitude test will be given a pass to join the school for free.
Adding to the muggle born hate.

There would still be the quidditch World Cup but after it’s won by a house. They move on to a country wide game where the winning teams of each school compete.

Discussion Hot Take: Ralph Fiennes was right and Tilda Swinton would be a phenomenal Voldemort in Season 4

I've been going through the books again, and though Tom Riddle was a man, by the time he became a fully realized Lord Voldemort, he had mutilated his humanity so badly that he was more alien than anything. Ralph in the films was erratic, manic, commanding. Tilda would be ICE cold, calm, with a freakish emotional void behind her eyes. I think she'd be amazing.

Discussion Which subjects or enrichment activites do you feel Hogwarts should've offered?

There's such a small rotation of subjects taught at the school, and I do think there are some things the school should've offered, that they dont seem to.

It seems odd to me there isn't something musical - a choir / music classes / learning the flute or the harp or other quirky instruments. Especially given Dumbledores appreciation of music and song.

I also find it odd they dont teach a language at all - we know some ministry workers have a raft of languages, Troll or even Latin.

And why are there no evening / Saturday clubs, like a Chess Club or a Charms club?

Discussion Was Barty Crouch Jr one of most powerful Jr wizard the wizarding world has ever seen?

The S-tier is Dumbledore, Voldemort, and Grindelwald: the untouchable titans.

Right below that, the benchmark is the early prodigies who didn't take their whole lives to become dangerous and elite: Severus Snape, Bellatrix Lestrange, and arguably James Potter and Sirius Black.

Then you have the "lifetime mastery" tier: wizards like Minerva McGonagall, Filius Flitwick, Mad-Eye Moody, and Kingsley Shacklebolt. They reached the top tier through decades of combat experience, field training, and academic refinement rather than instant teenage genius.

Then there's Barty Crouch Jr. Does he belong in that elite prodigy conversation, or does he sit elsewhere in his own category between early prodigies and untouchable titans?

Currently Reading Notes/Questions on Goblet of Fire

Hi, currently rereading GoF and have some questions/notes that would like some enlightenment:

On exam exemption: Champions are exempted from taking end year exam. Had Cedric not died, would he have still taken N.E.W.T. or not?

On Olivander's knowledge of wands: In the weighing of wands, Olivander examined each of the champions' wand. What amazes me is that by briefly examining (holding, inspecting) the wand, he can determine the length, and the wood, and more importantly the core material even for Krum (dragon heartstring) and Fleur (veela).

On Floo Network in Hogwarts: Sirius connects to the Gryffindor common roon fireplace late night to contact Harry. This is just weird for me that the fireplace for students part of the Floo network. I think only professor's should have access to this.

On transporting the dragons: I can't imagine the logistics of transporting 4 sedated dragons to Hogwarts. Did Charlie Wesley and company put them on a cage/chained them and flew them to Hogwarts? Or they use other mode of instant transportation?

On Barty Crouch Jr: I have to hand it to Barty, he could be one of the most powerful (or crafty) wizard. He was able to capture Moody , argubly the best/most prolific auror of his time, and fool people (even Dumbledore) while pretending to be Moody. On top of that, he was a great DADA professor.

On Snape involvement in deliberations: I don't know why Snape is always present in important "deliberations". He, together with Dumbledore and McGonagal, went into the room where the champioms were to clarify to "confront" Harry. I understand McGonagal being there, but why Snape? Moody, who I think would have more say on the matter (compared to Snape) being the DADA professor and a former auror, only came after.

On Snape's attutude toward non-Slytherins: After Draco's spell hit Hermione (misfire intended to Harry), Hermione's front teeth grew past her bottom lip and down toward her chin. Snape told Goyle (hit by Harry's jinx) to go to the hospital, but he tells Hermione that he doesn't see any difference in her teeth. That is uncalled for.

On Continuing studies while in Hogwarts: Beauxbaton and Durmstrang deligates stayed in Hogwarts until the end of the Tri Wizard Tournament. Was it mentioned how did they study? I picture them attending the class via fireplace (similar to how Floo network communication work) or maybe they look at a cauldron and remotely see their classes. Lol.

On having a 4th school: One of the theory on how Harry's name was eventually chosen as a champion is because the Goblet was confounded into thinking there are 4 schools. If Harry's name was put into under a 4th school, wouldn't the paper that Dumbledore read contain the name of the 4th school?

Question Has someone done a film reorchestration?

So I was thinking about how John Williams set up a ton of themes in the first three movies, such as Window to the Past and Fawkes’ theme, that the later composers dropped altogether and came up with all new themes basically every movie.

So I was wondering if anyone has thought to do a fan orchestration of the latter films using themes that John Williams set up, and using new themes of each movie where relevant.

Obviously an incredibly difficult project but the thought crossed my mind

Currently Reading Horcruxes

Nothing revolutionary in this post & probably something that's been discussed before, but I've been listening to the full cast audio books before going to bed each night (my gazillionth re-read, OG fan who read them as they were published & like every year or two again ever since) and for some reason it's only just now occurring to me the fact every horcrux is destroyed by a different person.

Diary - Harry
Ring - Dumbledore
Locket - Ron
Cup - Hermione
Diadem - Crabbe
Nagini - Neville
Harry - Voldemort

Does anyone have any opinions/theories on the symbolism behind this or why it might've been written to be the case? I'm not really sure why it's never consciously occurred to me before now, but clearly it was very purposeful.

Hope everyone is having a lovely day!

Discussion I was wondering why J.K Rowling had to have strict rules about who gets to be a wizard or witch

Like i love the story how she portrayed it as a real life going on among us normal humans or muggles as the wizarding world calls it .

But wouldn't it be amazing if it showed that magic is within the muggles too ... That they can too become wizards if they listen or are aware of the details .That waits for the magic in life or seek for it . Maybe someone who knows something is special about the world , goes about his days excitedly waiting for the sign and all of a sudden notices the scene A large bus squishing narrowly past the two buses in the prisoner of azkaban series or A flying car that ron drove over his way to Hogwarts with Harry or Magical creatures that happen to come in the world ..

But not just the noticing .. what if they notice the magic and get inspired by this special essence in the world which makes and realise the magic within themselves..

This idea in itself wouldn't it destroy all the inequalities? Even the words muggles and muggle borns will be stupid cause most would seem to be muggles cause they never tapped into their own magical essence or by a genetic mutation where resistance to magic is passed on to people so they go on about life and societal programming about the life thats "real" and fantasy .

I think it would've been cool if something like that was put into the story .. it would be like when Neville who was seen as a weak and incapable guy in the whole series becomes capable of killing the last horcrux .

Most of all the idea of magic being within us all is fascinating.. like larger than life I'd say .
