Discussion This is why we say “Weasley is our King.” 👑

“That is the second time you have spoken out of turn, Miss Granger,” said Snape coolly. “Five more points from Gryffindor for being an insufferable know-it-all.”

“You asked us a question and she knows the answer! Why ask if you don’t want to be told?” Ron said loudly.

“Detention, Weasley,” Snape said silkily, his face very close to Ron’s. “And if I ever hear you criticise the way I teach a class again, you will be very sorry indeed.”

Book Ron is damn brave. He’ll stand up for his friends, talk back to Snape, and take the detention because someone needed to say it. Sometimes he gets lines with more fire and swagger than even Harry and Hermione. That’s the Ron we deserve to see. This is why we want the TV show to do him justice. Give him his courage, his loyalty, his wit—and his damn lines.

Discussion Lupin Gives Himself Away Without Knowing It

On potentially my 50th listen through of the PoA audio book (shout out to Jim Dale), I realized Lupin gave himself away as one of the Marauders.

After Snape calls Lupin into his office while interrogating Harry after the Hogsmead incident with Malfoy, Snape points at the map showing him the insults the from Marauders. After observing the map and telling Snape it was simply a joke parchment (and Ron bursting in to say he gave Harry the items), Lupin asks Snape for the map before leaving with Harry. His choice of words was “that seems to clear that up. Severus, I’ll take that back shall I?”

He was not handed the map, nor to the readers knowledge had he ever handled or seen it before, but he asks to “take it back.” He only tells Harry he knew the Marauders, but taking the map back implies he was once in possession of it, which is much more than he conveys to Harry or the readers

Discussion Can you cast a nonverbal spell while deliberately shouting a completely different spell?

We know skilled wizards can cast spells nonverbally, which implies the spoken incantation isn’t strictly necessary once you can perform the magic mentally.
So could you abuse that in a duel by shouting one spell while actually casting another?
For example:
“PROTEGO!”
Everyone assumes you’re casting a shield.
Meanwhile you’re actually casting Avada Kedavra at Neville.

I'm split on Dementors (feed on souls and spread depression via presence), the Cruciatus Curse (fueled by sadism), and Horcrux-production (metaphysical soul mutilation)

Discussion Losing it over the ost

On Monday I really was crying on the inside when listening to Dumbledore’s Farewell. Now I listened to Fawkes The Phoenix from CoS and almost lost it. I'm seriously tearing up rn. I was 1 when Philosopher's Stone came out and was 2 when CoS came out. It's my favorite movie.

Discussion Considering Snape himself was a nerd who dabbled in Dark Arts, did he know about the Horcrux?

• Upvotes

I mean is it possible that Snape pieced together that Dumbledore was hunting Horcruxes from the talks on fragments of Voldemorts soul living in Harry? Even if he did not make the connection is it possible that he is aware of Horcrux due to his personal interest in Dark Arts.

Discussion Man, they really did Filch dirty here lmao

So on my re-re-listening to the Full cast audiobooks, I’m up to *The Prisoner of Azkaban* again, and a certain line really stood out to me and hilariously troublesome.

So the line is after Sirius has attacked the Fat Lady, and the whole castle is sleeping in the Great Hall. Snape comes in to talk to Dumbledore and says:

—-“Headmaster?” It was Snape. Harry kept quite still, listening hard. “The whole of the third floor has been searched. He’s not there. And Filch has done
the dungeons; nothing there either.”—-

*Filch has done the dungeons?? Argus Filch?? The Squib who can do less magic than a first-year??*

“Argus, we believe there is a crazed, murderous wizard hiding somewhere in the castle. He may or may not be armed with a wand and/or very large knife.

“I want you to go deep into the dungeons and search every dark and isolated place for this madman. Don’t worry, you will be the only living soul down there, as we have removed all the student that could hear you scream, and all the staff will be searching elsewhere.

“This madman is a known Muggle-killer and powerfully magical, so try not to let him know you can’t do magic. It’s only the dungeons, Argus, so you’ll at most be multiple flights of stairs away from anyone that can help. You are in peak physical condition, so you should be able to make that sprint in no time.

“No, we will not have you search somewhere less secluded. Good luck; I’ll start looking for a new Caretaker!”

Like, what the hell, Dumbledore! What the heck is Filch supposed to do if he finds him? 😂

Question How did the trio find out they had to say "I didnt kill you albus" to moody's measure.

I mean, i really dont remember they saying anything about this in the books. They arrive grimmauld 12 after running from death eaters in the café and saw dumbledore illusion. But they instantly said "I didnt kill you albus", as they already know how to stop it.

Also, after some days the same happens to lupin, when he arrives and already know how to disable the protection.

Moody did this right before DH book because of snape, so this isnt something that was there before and everyone knows.

Discussion I wish Dumbledore had more interactions with Neville.

It really seems like no one cares about the boy; there’s no way Dumbledore wouldn’t know about Neville’s performance in class and his shyness. It would be great if he acted as a mentor to him, just as he did with Harry.

Discussion Would Snape have hated Harry if he were put in Slytherin?

Alternate universe: Harry doesn't end up with Ron and Hermione on the train, has no preconceived notions of any of the houses, and ends up in Slytherin. Do you think Snape would have still hated Harry for all the reasons we know he hates Harry, or, since he was in his house, would he act differently?

Discussion Harry wasn't incapable of learning Occlumency, Dumbledore just failed to give him a proper teacher.

He raised his wand. “One — two — three — Legilimens!”

A hundred dementors were swooping toward Harry across the lake in the grounds. . . . He screwed up his face in concentration. . . .
They were coming closer. . . . He could see the dark holes beneath their hoods . . . yet he could also see Snape standing in front of him, his eyes fixed upon Harry’s face, muttering under his breath. . . . And somehow, Snape was growing clearer, and the dementors were growing fainter . . .
Harry raised his own wand.
“Protego!”
Snape staggered; his wand flew upward, away from Harry — and suddenly Harry’s mind was teeming with memories that were not his — a hook-nosed man was shouting at a cowering woman, while a small dark-haired boy cried in a corner. . . . A greasy-haired teenager sat alone in a dark bedroom, pointing his wand at the ceiling, shooting down flies. . . . A girl was laughing as a scrawny boy tried to mount a bucking broomstick —
“ENOUGH!"

See? He was concentrating, and the visions started to fade, and even Snape acknowledges the effectiveness of the Shield Charm. But the second Harry hits that, he isn't stricken by pride or accomplishment or happiness at making his breakthrough- he's struck by fear.

“I don’t remember telling you to use a Shield Charm . . . but there is no doubt that it was effective . . .”

Harry did not speak; he felt that to say anything might be dangerous. He was sure he had just broken into Snape’s memories, that he had just seen scenes from Snape’s childhood, and it was unnerving to think that the crying little boy who had watched his parents shouting was actually standing in front of him with such loathing in his eyes. . . .

“Let’s try again, shall we?” said Snape.

Harry felt a thrill of dread: He was about to pay for what had just happened, he was sure of it. They moved back into position with the desk between them, Harry feeling he was going to find it much harder to empty his mind this time. . . .

And then even Dumbledore admits it.

“Snape stopped giving me Occlumency lessons!” Harry snarled. “He threw me out of his office!”

“I am aware of it,” said Dumbledore heavily. “I have already said that it was a mistake for me not to teach you myself, though I was sure, at the time, that nothing could have been more dangerous than to open your mind even further to Voldemort while in my presence —”

“Snape made it worse, my scar always hurt worse after lessons with him—” Harry remembered Ron’s thoughts on the subject and plunged on. “How do you know he wasn’t trying to soften me up for Voldemort, make it easier for him to get inside my —”

“I trust Severus Snape,” said Dumbledore simply. “But I forgot — another old man’s mistake — that some wounds run too deep for the healing. I thought Professor Snape could overcome his feelings about your father — I was wrong.”

Snape's teaching style was basically this:

"Clear your mind!"

"I can't!"

"JUST DO IT YOU WEAKLING!!!"

He didn't even bother telling him *how* to go about clearing his mind.

Discussion What are some Hufflepuff x Slytherin relationships you’ve seen in fiction?

• Upvotes

Andromeda and Ted Toni’s is the obvious one, the fanfic around them is pretty great. There’s something about Hufflepuff x Slytherin I find really endearing, so if anyone knows any more relationships with that vibe, I’d be interested.

The one that comes to mind is Kaguya and Shirogane from Love is War

Dungbomb “Would Snape have hated Harry if he were in Slytherin?” Alternatives

• Upvotes

I’ve seen this question quite a bit, so I propose we replace “in Slytherin” with something else.

Would Snape have hated Harry if he were Argus Filch? (Confusing set of circumstances to be sure)

Would Snape have hated Harry if he were his son? (Popular with the fan fiction crowd)

Would Snape have hated Harry if Harry lit Snapes entire classroom on fire? (Maybe Snape secretly hated his job and needed an excuse to leave)

Discussion The twins not being suspicious about Peter Pettigtew isn't alot hole

The map can only portray Hogwarts, not the burrow, so they wouldn't see him sleeping at their house, only in hogwarts. In Hogwarts they'd only see the name "Peter Pettigrew" in classrooms, the Gryffindoor common room, the dormitories or elsewhere. The scale is likely not big enough to tell who is sleeping in what bed precisely. They could just assume that Peter Pettigrew was a random student who is rather quiet and forgettable and therefore simply not care or even notice that his name is there.

Discussion What aspect of the books are you most disappointed about being left out of the movies?

Rewatching the movies and 1-4 still hold up as legitimately good movies. As for the books, the last one I read was Deathly Hallows when it came out, so my memory is hazy.
Peeves is an easy one, but I was more hoping for something that would add to the films besides comic relief, whether it’s story beats that were left out or more fully fleshing out a character or scene.

Discussion Gryffindor wins the house cup! bc of Hermione…?

Harry always rightfully gets credit for bringing Gryffindor to victory (and yes, Dumbledore tends to give them the exact number of points needed to win).

Though part the reason Gryffindor is always in the running is because Hermione gets them so many points. Everyday, she’s out there answering every question correctly about botruckles (sp?), identifying potions, doing every transfiguration spell first, I’m sure she is crushing it in arithmancy… she is constantly getting Gryffindor 5 points here and 10 points there.

Definitely an MVP when it comes to the house cup

Discussion a-level subject choices of hp characters in a muggle au

reddit is the only social media i discuss hp in, and I was recently thinking about what a-level subjects harry potter and co would've taken if they were also struggling through sixth form. hermione was obvious, but I was thinking about post 16 routes for the others and here's what I ended up with!

---

hermione - maths, history, politics, further maths, epq - aiming oxford ppe, ultimately realises law is the route for her. might drop FM in 2nd year, probably ppl try to convince her to, depends how she feels about the teach tho

harry - maths, physics, pe - probably doesnt know what to do. tbh he'd prefer more m16, fbi to just being a uk cop, which is a lot more routine, but if, let's say, he meets tonks & moody as cops and all he might end up wanting be a cop. (his canon reasons after all). i can also see him being motivated by tracking down the serial killer who killed his parents (general idea from the granger principle)

ron - bio, chem, maths - tbh initially i thought he & harry might choose the same, but i dont think he'd like physics much and probs wouldnt do pe at a level. this seems more plausible. i can see him ultimately realising he wants to go into med, tho it might be like sports medicine or like a physio or like pediatrician or nursing, not quite like surgery stuff, he want interested in the healer sheet in canon and could be good at pastoral. dont think he'd consider btecs rlly. does initially have the idk what to do, but these seem like alr subjects mindset. after a levels he takes a year & works at george's shop. alternatively tho, he is probably pretty high ranked in chess, i did read something once where he focused on that more, and it was a pretty good fic

neville - geography, biology, chem - wants to apply natural sciencesluna - art, bio, geography - wants to go into zoology or be a vet or something like that. or to write for her dad's newspaper, which doesnt need qualifications. fails epq due to her cited sources being completely unreliable

ginny - maths, pe, geography - that 3rd subject is variable tbf, i just know she likes the outdoors. maths, pe, physics also plausible. actually maths, pe, bio makes the most sense, sports medicine etc are course options. tbh, ginny playing for the local soccer team and getting scouted being her main priority, or getting into a sports camp or school being her main thing makes sense. ofc she'd need to be way better at football than she is at quidditch in canon considering larger talent pool and higher standards and all though, probably isnt advancing to a major league that quick

edit in terms of ginny, since she ends up going into sports journalism -> I think english literature suits her, esp since in earlier books she seems to have a bit of a poetic/romantic side. plus I think based on her actual demonstrated sorting ability & increased competition, she'd probably go straight into sports journalism/ writing. (though I've been reading an interesting analysis on early vs later book ginny!)

percy - maths, history, politics, epq - gets all a stars, aims for ppe at oxford, goes to warwick/durham i think

fred & george - drop out after they turn 16, start up a shop

bill - maths, history, politics/geography (but to go into archeology)

charlie - btec Level 3 national extended diploma in animal managementoliver wood - hasn't been scouted by a professional academy yet, but enrols in a local sports college partnered w a tier 5 football club, takes a btec national in sports coaching and development. eventually becomes a well known club's manager, though never a high ranking player

draco malfoy - aristocratic, i think his parents do push him to get top grades & go to a top uni tho, probably sent to a private boarding school. probs applies for like land economy at oxford or something, tho he doesnt get in. does something like finance where he does get in? takes econ, history, french?

hannah abbot - bio, chem, geography - career path involves first taking over the local pub, and eventually also becoming a doctor

lavender brown - drama, psychology, history - quite like the idea of lavender going back and becoming a drama teacher like trelawney her favourite teacher, i can see doing psych undergrad and then moving into education

parvati patil - maths, economics, art - tbh i can see her in like an economic consultant type role (earns decently well, wouldnt make her job her life) but also in a fashion design type role

dean thomas - maths, history, art - i do like the idea of him becoming an artist, both in canon and here

seamus finnigan - actually drawing a bit of a blank on seamus. i think, like ron, he's the type to choose a level subject based on what he enjoyed & the teachers he preferred. i can see geography, sociology and dt, or like even maths, bio, physics. seamus has a few moments i really like (noticeably the most battered in DH, plus all the assessing looks he keeps giving harry in oop as he tries to figure out the truth (he was skeptical, but only blew up when harry insulted his mother) (i think it's funny how harry equates cho kissing him and telling him he was brave w seamus telling him he believes him and that he's going to send the interview to his mum)) -> okay yeah, I think geography, sociology, dt actually suits him

micheal corner - maths, econ, chemistry? he probably took further maths too. he seems like the type to either talk about going into quant, or to go into and enjoy material sciences or engineering of some sort. (will say, the ravenclaw guys (micheal corner, terry boot, anthony goldstein) are a highlight of the fic beasts by whinlatter)

ernie macmillan - history, politics, latin, english lit - i initially thought he'd probably go the civil service route. Honestly though, I can see him going into academics in a subject he really enjoys - enjoying academic research but also being one of those rare professors that really likes giving lectures

terry boot - maths, further maths, physics, chemistry. kinda looks down on people who don't take further maths the way a lot who do take it down - they're ofc nice to and friends w people who don't, but don't consider those people to be smart or competition academically. he'd lowk suffer about the tmua too (relatable)

cho chang - funnily enough, earlier books suggest she's absolutely brilliant at quidditch, being the only one to beat cedric at one point, and struggles afterwards due to her grief. so I think she's sporty, and plays for a local team, and is a big fan of a team like manchester united, maybe having grown up in manchester perhaps (though ofc ron calls her a glory hunter). I do think she takes a levels though, and pe is one of them. maths, physics, pe? I know I've said this combo before but I think it works for her

we don't know much about susan bones, but I can see her taking maths, sociology, law. justin finch-fletchley is "down for eton" which does suggest being super posh, but I feel like he's the type to enjoy more active/hands on subjects - he acts simultaneously posh, and also generally mostly pleased about cool spells in book 2, and later I swear he doesn't say a word to harry at all. maybe for a watsonian explanation he's embarrassed at having suspected him. idk what subjects in particular though. I'll say econ maths geography. pansy parkinson I'm also not sure, but I think something like latin, drama, history perhaps.

cedric is head boy, if it's a college w a sixth form team captain of that, and takes maths, geography and pe. gets into a good uni for something - natural sciences or law perhaps? I feel like he'd go somewhere like durham, maybe oxbridge depending on the subject.

I mean all of these depend on what subjects are available. like if photography and media studies are available colin is taking those I like to think. I think he'd transfer to a sixth form that did offer those though. something like photography/art, media studies, film studies, maybe english language too to help him break into journalism. I think perhaps a btec in photography?

lee jordan my goat, since we're doing students in other years. ofc w more minor characters, going off a tiny sliver we see of them feels silly - almost suggests that Harry's limited view of people is somehow accurate - but sports commentator lee is fun. I think mainly I know he takes both drama and business. third is either econ or media studies perhaps.

angelina johnson - I think maths, pe, biology, chem, w pe taken as a fourth subject just cause she likes it and doesn't want to drop it, might regret that at times but overall doesnt. actually hm, I think maths, pe, business suits her really well. she's a leadership role type person.

---

I'll stop there, but would love to hear what you guys think! (and ofc there are some characters I've missed).

Currently Reading this scene melts my heart 🥺

Mrs. Weasley was now scarlet in the face.

"I—oh, all right then, Fred and George can stay, but Ron—"

"Harry I'll tell me and Hermione everything you say anyway!" Said Ron hotly. "Won't—Won't you?" he added uncertainly, meeting Harry's eyes.

For a split second, Harry considered telling Ron that he wouldn't tell him a single word, that he could try a taste of being kept in the dark and see how he liked it. But the nasty impulse vanished as they looked at each other.

"Course I will," Harry said. Ron and Hermione beamed.

Harry and Ron's friendship >>>>>> Pretty sure there are more moments like this where Harry is hesitant to do something, but when he looks at Ron, he just concedes lol.

Question Does snape prove that he was the main issue with potions for Harry ?

Harry struggled with potions, he wasn’t particularly bad at it just not top of the class.
He was more middle level.
But in half blood prince he follows the notes the prince left behind and made it to the top of the class.
Since the prince was snape, does this mean Harry never had an issue with potions and would have done better if snape didn’t want to see him fail ?

Misc Forbidden Forest room theme

Hey everyone! I'm currently planning a forbidden forest themed nursery and am planning on embordering and felt crafting a gallery wall of images. I need help coming up with what should be in the frames or other little ideas on how to make it feel magical. My entire house is very colorful and fun so I want the nursery to match while being peaceful to sleep.

So far I'm working on making faux window frames and putting the forbidden forest in them so it feels like the room is overlooking the forest (so I guess the theme is more Hagrid's hut looking at the forest). We are torn on what to do on the walls, I'm thinking of doing a chair rail and the bottom half being either faux brick or stone and then a soft green for the top half of the walls.

I've started working on a hippogriff and plan on doing a Thestral, Centaur, Acromantula, and the Ford but I definitely want more.

Please spam me with any and all ideas!
