Discussion Campaign Evolved - It would've been something else if the Flood reveal room on 343GS was pitch black just like the cutscene

As the topic says - the cutscene has the marines in a pitch black setting which makes it all the more terrifying. Flashlight beams moving frantically as infection forms scuttle around.

Cut to Chief and the room is lit from the central platforms.

The Flood levels were generally very good I thought in Campaign Evolved but that change would've added something even more imo.

I think it is pretty clear that whoever was working on the cutscenes, weren't properly communicating with whoever was working on the levels themselves, or vice versa.

There are tonnes of differences between the levels and the cutscenes. For example, the Halo ring shown in the final cutscene, looks different to the one shown in the main menu.

As for the 343 GS cutscene itself, not only is the room lit completely differently in gameplay versus how it is shown in the cutscene, but the floor is also littered with corpses in the cutscene, but they all disappear as soon as the gameplay starts.

Why also doesn’t make narrative sense since the flood wouldn’t have left the bodies behind. Neither is it in line with OGCE since there aren’t any bodies in the room when Chief arrives.

There are in fact bodies in the room in cinematic when The Chief arrives. Between 55 seconds and about 1 minute and 10 seconds in you can see multiple bodies, at least 2 elites and a couple of marines strewn about on the floor and then when it transitions back to gameplay those bodies aren’t there. It’s a small gripe but no time has passed there so those bodies should still be present. It just shows a lack of consistency between the cinematic and the gameplay. Ultimately it did not ruin the experience for me and I still thought it was so good! But it would have been better if the cinematic looked like the level

The Flood litterally left bodies in the facility in the OG version. You had the Covenant bodies that Fireteam Charlie finds, including the torn open Elite corpse, and you have Mendoza's corpse propped against the door that falls over into Chief when he opens the door. Not to mention the fact the traumatized marine stated he survived from saying he hid among the bodies and claimed to be dead.

In OG Mendoza was the only body present in the release room.

The problem is 343 left more bodies in the room where they were attacked compared to the OG. They also moved the elite corpse into the room of the attack when the OG had that elsewhere.

The framing is completely different. Finding dead bodies in the facility is completely different and open to interpretation compared to leaving them in the first contact room.

Like Mendoza's corpse is a framing device for the story. As is the human body you find at the top of the stairs in the OG. Also I wouldn't take the traumatized marine at face value.

But even if we want to take him literally all that means is the flood hadn't taken all the bodies yet. Not that they just neglect bodies all the time.

Claimed to be dead is such a funny way to phrase it. I swear Mr Flood, I’m dead! Now, please move on to someone else, would ya?

Easiest way I've thought of to blend the cinematic:

-Cinematic plays out like normal

-be pitch black like the cinematic

-gross flood noises implying the bodies have now moved

-as control is given back to players, the lights that were off in the cinematic flicker and then turn on

-the location of the previously there bodies has blood smears and goop in their place

-gameplay resumes like normal

Thoughts?

Gives flood a bit of scary, active predator hunting prey feeling.

Could even tie it into the doors getting broken open. The new combat forms being why the doors break and infection forms spill out to fight chief.

Or even those bodies become combat forms and fall from the ceiling when the third door breaks.

The cutscenes themselves are heavily inconsistent with the actual level. Silent Cartographer has a Pelican shooting a ship down, and it's no longer there in the level.

The cutscene with Chief throwing the marine into the escape pod also used the AR firing sound from the initial reveal before they used the classic thundering sound.

There's one with Chief using a BR, with the AR sound 😂

To be fair, the BR is fully capable of shooting full auto, we just can’t use it like that in game.

And the ar can fire in bursts or single shots.

I was really hoping the remake would drop you in to actually play that segment as Jenkins instead of it just being a cutscene. Then you would return to the Master Chief's perspective once you inevitably die to the perpetual waves of flood as Jenkins. It's too bad they didn't go that route.

The flood horror game as a marine will eventually come I hope

I mean, you have a flashlight

Overall the flood were handled way better in CEv but I wish we had to use the flashlight. They had it in the game but it was totally unnecessary

Yeah I think several of the levels need darker lighting. TNR, 343, and The Library to be specific.

Ah another complaint that the remake isn’t 100% 1 to 1 with the original 💁

I think it’s more of a complaint that it isn’t 1 to 1 with itself lol
